This is based on my one initial visit only, but credit where it's due, yeah?
I was headed to the Tigers' Opening Day game, and had to park due east of the RenCen. On my way to the RenCen People Mover station, I happened to glance across Jefferson and see Nathan's there, and by that time of the day, I was absolutely starving. Walked across the street, went right in, and placed my order for a corned beef on rye with cole slaw and Russian dressing. I asked for it with a new dill pickle, which they didn't have (?), but it was hardly a hill to die on when I was as hungry as I was. That, and a can of Coke, and my order was complete. About $10.50 out the door, including tax, which is more-than-fair these days for a corned beef sandwich and drink, especially downtown, I'd say.
The folks there were friendly enough, a *tiny* bit slow with my carryout, but nothing to really complain about, either. I was probably just in a bit of a hurry, and didn't make that known. My sandwich, pickle, and Coke were packed up well enough, I was given a couple of napkins in the bag with them, and off I went.
I tried. Really, I *did* try to hold off on eating the sandwich until I got to the park, but I could feel myself getting ornery having not eaten anything all day, so it was time to dig in before I got there. The grade on the sandwich would be a B-/C+. It was certainly good enough to merit what I'd paid for it, and I thought it was put together well, too. There are certainly plenty of other corned beef sandwiches which are better than this one, but this one isn't anything to hang their head about, either. It's just not my favorite, second favorite, third favorite...but it's still plenty good. The old dill that came with it? Far better than expected. The can of Coke was cold and functional. I do wish that the beef itself had been a bit more flavorful, but it was fine, the bread was good, the cole slaw was good, and the Russian dressing was good. I would gladly do this again under similar circumstances for the same price.
I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but if I was in the area and was hankering for a decent corned beef sandwich, this would fit the bill and make me happy enough. If they can do it consistently, all the better.
