The Best Iconic Restaurant Dishes and Foods in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"The hani — a pita sandwich made up of strips of crispy chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, melted slices of Swiss and cheddar cheese, and a mayonnaise blend — is the often-imitated wrap invented in the 1980s by a chef named Hani at the American Coney Island at Seven Mile and Mack. It’s especially popular among the late-night crowds getting out of Detroit dive bars. Online ordering is also available." - Serena Maria Daniels

Michigan’s Most Iconic Coney Island Diners | Eater Detroit

"National Coney Island is among three regional coney chains, founded in 1965 by James Giftos, who took over ownership of the National Chili Company before launching his own space. These coneys play into diner nostalgia with flashy neon lighting. Today, National Coney Island includes nearly 20 locations throughout metro Detroit and its chili is sold to independent coney businesses all over the region. Hani — a pita stuffed with fried chicken strips, Swiss and American cheese, shredded lettuce, diced tomato, and mayonnaise — is one of its best-known specialties. In 2023, National branched out with the launch Pop’s Hani Shop in Royal Oak sporting a hani-centric menu. Fun fact, National’s current president, Tom Giftos, says his grandfather got his start working at Lafayette downtown." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
I would say this is one of the places where the locals go. My waitress knew my name. The second time I went there. She also knew all the others. She did a great job offering suggestions of what to try. We are not from this area and we haven’t had Coney Islands, but we’re in the area because we have a family member in the hospital We try to classic and I’ll just say definitely not for me I did enjoy the french fries nice and crunchy well done

Google
Clean and friendly, my new favorite place. I eat there at least 3 times a week

Loving Light

Google
I was okay with this location at first but now I feel like free they're being petty and careless. The past couple times I've ordered the little tender meal with chili and cheese on the fries they have not put it on there. I even called ahead of my order this time to make sure it's right. I was told to come later for a side of cheese and chili guessing I'm expected to buy more fries or just inhale chili and cheese...

Google
The food here was excellent! The loaded hash browns did not disappoint. The hotdogs are good and you’ll want at least two of them. Cheese sauce and fries enough said. Our server was quick and friendly along with a man who cleared our table of empty dishes. Everyone and everything was great!

Google
I love this place, the staff is friendly and fast. Sorry about the picture, it WAS chicken tenders, but they were so tasty, crispy and light that there’s none left😋. (I usually can’t finish all of my food.) Denise is the best server!

Google
Everything was amazing, food, our waitress Lori was the best. Restaurant was very clean and service was fast.

Google
Diner. Old school diner feeling. Great service. Great food. Great atmosphere. Not much to look at from the outside and easy to drive past without a backwards glance. But once inside you could be in a movie scene in a diner. It’s that iconic. Everything is good tasting here but a huge shout out to the Hani sandwich which is yet another Detroit based food original. I think my favorite thing was the waitress who was super nice but I am sure could have beaten me in a fair fight.

Google
Simple order: 1order of fries plain, and an order of Greek fries. Fries were old, cold, and the greek fries had very little cheese and no lemon flavor at all. I was extremely upset at the clear disregard the cook displayed, he had to see what he put in the bag. Remy the work dog was happy to have the two orders. I would not recommend this place. The server up front was nice.

Yelp
I'm working in the area this week. So today I stopped and had breakfast. It was excellent. I had three eggs, sausage and bacon, and a piece of ham. It was a very large breakfast, and I really enjoyed it. I came back for lunch and had a bowl of chili, no beans, added, ground, beef, and a grilled chicken salad.the service is excellent, the prices are very reasonable, and the food is outstanding

Yelp
First timer here! As part of the Detroit/Grosse Point tour, we stopped here for a late lunch. First, there was parking in the back which was great! Then we were seated immediately, five adults and two kids. They have kids menus and crayons available which was great. Coke products and kids hot dogs came out within a matter of moments, all satisfying. We got a regular coney, a coney special, a loose burger, a hani, baby Greek salads, and lots of fries. All very fast, hot, and solid meals. Being from the cincy area, I was concerned about the chili but turns out you can have two kinds in the world. This chili reminds me more of Tex max, like steak and shake, certainly bring the Tums style. But delish! Good hotdog with a soft bun and endless napkins so you can dig right in. Having tried all three coney styles, I'd recommend the coney special so you get the best of both worlds. Separate just isn't as good. Big surprise winner for me was the baby greek. It was fresh, big, and full of things. Fries were not great which was a bit of a let down but all in all, I would be back. As we were paying, our waitress asked if we had the membership card to which we didn't. We signed up and are excited to keep earning points. Great work Detroit!

Yelp
Lunch with my coworker. He has the original coney with a side of fries. He said excellent. I started with a bowl of chili, no beans, Excellent! Then I had a grilled chicken salad. Outstanding! Great Diet Coke , good blend. Excellent service.

Yelp
Just had a take out order from here, the food was delicious however there was a small mistake when the chicken from one of our meals wasn't in the bag. I called to let them know and they gave me the chicken and gave me a free drink. I'll definitely be returning

Yelp
I order a takeout order of a hani special , chilli cheese fries , a side of bacon , and a 1/2 pound of wings , all my food was good , but they sent me 5 wings and when i called they told me that was a half a pound , i'm not dumb i know what a half a pound of bbq wings look like and that was not it , to keep a long story short , i will not be ordering from national coney island again .

Yelp
This place is a regular for us for many years. Staff is great - so many wonderful people and it feels like a local family restaurant. Food is solid Coney Island type food. We miss it being open late night. We used to come with our family after sports events that run late and after plays & concerts.

Yelp
I ordered carry out from this location, as I don't want to dine in during covid. It was not ideal. I ordered onion rings, as well as an omelette which came with toast (I chose rye) and hash browns. The order was ready on time, but the food was very disappointing. The omelet was dry and bland, and there was almost no cheese in it. I didn't even eat a third of it before giving up on it, so it mostly went to waste. The toast was burned. The onion rings were the only things that were good. I will still go to Coney Island as a rule, but I won't be ordering from this location again.

Yelp
This is one of the two coneys I ever go to. Have been coming to this one since I was little. My mother likes to go here when my brother and his family are in town. My nephew likes their hamburgers or hotdogs with their smiley fries. The food is always consistent and decent. My mom and I always get the baby Greek salad and either split or chicken Hani or we each get our own. Their Hani is the only place I like it and it's not often I will eat breaded or gluten heavy foods. My brother always get two coney dogs and their chili cheese fries. I don't know why but they do put out the best Coneys for a chain. This will likely he here for decades and possibly a century from now. It's one of the few places that's been around for so long.

Yelp
Good food. Not the best breakfast around but it's is good, service is always friendly, and prices are super reasonable. A friend has an allergy and the waitress was great about checking the dressing and read off all the ingredients. The thing that keeps me from giving four stars is the bathroom is disgusting. There were tons of flies in the bathroom and it needed a good cleaning. Reminded me of an old school gross gas station bathroom. I've never seen so many flies in a bathroom that was in a restaurant. Pretty gross. Aside from that, a good and quick option on Mack.

Yelp
I just drove by at 7:56am on a Monday morning, should've been no big deal, except I witnessed what looked like a cook hanging out THE DOOR with both hands in gloves I can't say that he didn't charge them when he went in.. but he also didn't take the old ones off before going out of his intent was to change them. I work less than a mile away and frequent this location for lunch, but that's over as of today.

Yelp
OK, another try. Same rating, though. First of all, I sat at the counter for 15 minutes before one of the many waitresses milling around an almost-empty restaurant came over to ask me what I'd like to order. And, by the way, I was sitting at the counter! It's not like I was tucked away in a corner booth, in the back. That's not good. Second, I ordered my salad, and told Kelly, my waitress, to "86 the onions". It showed up with onions, of course. I asked her if she had not heard what I said when I ordered, and she said, "Something about the onions? I didn't understand it. I just ordered it regular". So, that's not good. Third, I ordered the fish and chips platter, and when it showed up, I received only a knife (no fork) to use. When I asked for malt vinegar, the server brought me a plastic cup of vinegar; but it was the type of vinegar used as half of the oil and vinegar combination that goes with salad. That's no good. The food was just OK; not bad, not good, just, you know, OK. The service was not even mediocre. I left my waitress a big tip. I felt sorry for her. She was clearly overmatched by the demands of the position.

Yelp
Still the same story. I always have the coney and they are always good. And they are one of the few coney places where you can have s BEER and a coney. A heaven sent pair!
google avatar

Coleman H.

Yelp
Been eating here for decades. Never disappointed. It's a cony joint - don't come here if you're expecting 5 stars. Good take out during COVID!!! Always a winner.

Yelp
I'm not sure why this place has such low reviews. I live very close by and this is a staple for a tasty, quick, cheap weekend breakfast. Or an easy dinner pick up. The food is tasty, the waitresses are friendly, and the service is quick. The breakfast platters, cheeseburgers, cheese fries, gyros, and hanis are all great! National Coney never disappoints me!

Catherine H.

Yelp
We used uber eats, with this restaurant. We didn't receive our coney dogs. I suppose the driver was hungry. We placed our order it took 2 hrs to get the food. Everything was real greasy, cold. Bad night don't forget missing food we payed for. So sad! First time using since the pandemic just another restaurant going bad. I HAVE BEEN GOING THERE SINCE MY BABIES WERE BABIES OVER 40 YEARS. NEVER SEEN THIS. I SORRY SO SAD! THE DRIVER TOOK THE CONEYS ‍

Yelp
Ate here over christmas-- horrible, undercooked coney dogs, not even heated. its a shame too, this place was awesome 8-10 years ago. The location up by 9 mile in harper woods is decent, but stay the hell away from 7/mack. yuck

Jenny R.

Yelp
SO! there was a snafu with the catering order for my company's lunch - I called Coney with LITERALLY 30 minutes and they were able to accommodate a delicious lunch spread for 25 people! I went to pick up, and Sammy, the manger who I spoke with, was the kindest man. I thanked him profusely for his help and he could not have been nicer or more helpful. the whole team scrambled to assist me in my (half) hour of need. I am a once-a-month or so visitor, but I have just committed to visiting more often, and also having them cater work lunches more often (hopefully with much more notice next time!). in addition to being just generally amazing, he also threw in about 6 business cards each worth a dollar off my next order - what a guy. this is an incredible business and the office staff were all thrilled with their makeshift coney bar. :) THANK YOU SAMMY and the whole team at Coney!

LeAndrea F.

Yelp
I have worked in the area for years and remember when this place was really good. Today's visit reminded me why I pass this place regularly and never think to stop in. I ordered the Coney Combo with a request for well done fries. I received a lukewarm coney and was offered with fries that looked to be fried a second time to achieve well done status. I had to start on the dog while my fries were being correctly prepared. Boo hiss! I ate what I ordered and quickly removed this spot from my list as a lunch option.

Yelp
Overrated overrated how do you not serve corned beef they sell pork omelette yuck if you like corned beef just be prepared to be disapointed
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
I used to love coming to this location however the service has been very, very poor lately. I don't know if it has changed management or if it's the new waitresses. Food comes to the table ice col and partial orders brought out to the table. I shouldn't have to "remind" the waitress that all of my food was not brought out. I only gave one star and that's because the gentleman who bused the table was more helpful and pleasant than the waitress. I had to even chase down the waitress to PAY MY BILL. Unacceptable!!!

Mary S.

Yelp
So we stopped here for lunch. If you like hot dogs, then you would enjoy the menu. The salads are very very simple and not tasty and fries are undercooked. The atmosphere is simple and some of the tables are too close to the kitchen. Service is okay. They do however bring out very big glasses so whatever you have ordered for a drink you will not need a refill.

Yelp
For what it is - fast, good, cheap, food - this place rocks. You can get in and out for breakfast, lunch or a late night snack under $10 and 15 minutes. The nachos, cheese sticks and chicken fingers are all standard, and the breakfasts (omelette with american and feta cheese is my fave) are excellent, but what most people come for of course are the coney dogs. Service is what you'd expect. Some locations serve beer and wine (this is one) and some are open 24 hours (this one is not).

Yelp
If I could give this National 0 stars, I would. Over the past year or so this location has successfully ridden itself of any and all quality it may have had in the past. The management, workers, and food are all intolerably horrid. Long gone are the friendly, welcoming waitresses and management. Replacing them are unknowledgeable, unenthusiastic, unhappy staff. Management does little to resolve issues or ensure happiness with customers. I will never return. NATIONAL CONEY ISLAND, step your game up!!! You used to have great employees and food at this location!!! What happened?! Last time I bothered to stop in, (carryout, of course, because I have already learned not to dine on at this location), I waited 15 minutes for a tiny, lukewarm chicken hani and fries that tasted like both the chicken and fries had been refried at least twice. Other locations are WAY BETTER. If you're looking for a quality coney, look elsewhere.

Givenchy D.

Yelp
Knock it down and start over. Declining quality over the past 7 years has made the food inedible. Ironically, as downtown Detroit prospers with exciting high quality restaurants, east side dining has steadily eroded. Recently, I dined here with a friend from Birmingham. He looked at me in disbelief jabbing a fork into a baby Greek salad frozen solid in the middle. Never again.

Sarah W.

Yelp
I've been a semi regular customer for years. I came the other night and ordered chicken wings. I noticed it wasn't one of their normal cooks working, and when I was eating the wings, I noticed there was a weird texture to them. Guess who was stuck in bed for two days with horrible food poisoning?? Yup, won't be coming back here.

John D.

Yelp
After many visits..the service /servers are progressivly worse i tend to usually and unfortunately get an older lady thats way over tanned and has some strange breathing issue She actually scared my children Also long fake nails very very dirty Asked to speak to a manager that represented as a gang member more than management Will never come agsin and will spread the word
google avatar

Sherri P.

Yelp
The coneys are great I always get the original hani sandwich when I come here don't forget your coney bucks rewards card. You can earn so many freebies with this card. The lemon rice soup is really good too for anyone who hasn't tried it. Very clean place. The food is excellent. Would give them five stars but I can't because they never put anything New On the menu. Most restaurants put something new on the menu to keep it exciting

Yelp
Wednesday in Detroit. When I was a kid growing up on the east side of the D, there were billboards that stated emphatically that it was Prince Spaghetti Day. Prince still can be found on store shelves, but Wednesday now belongs to National Coney Island. Reason? 99 cent coneys. Ok, I hear ya. 99 cents and how good could they be? The chili is wonderful, the dogs heavenly and when you wash it down with a cold Vernors, hey, that's the ultimate Detroit meal. Of course it wouldnt be complete without a 2.99 Sanders Hot Fudge sundae. I got out of there for a mere 8 bucks tip included. The decor is modern, and the service is great. My server came by every few minutes to make sure I had everything I needed, and it wasn't like she had nothing to do, On Wednesday National does a fairly brisk business. Cheapskates of a feather, if you will. The nice thing is they're on a bus line and for me that's a plus. I don't like hoofing my fat carcass any farther than I have to especially in the middle of a snowy Michigan winter. I'm all for excercise, but I feel unless you're being chased there is no earthly reason to run anywhere. As long as National has a day set aside for coneys, I will attend. The only bad part of the bargain, they are not found on the west side of Detroit. But that's minor. Very minor. And so it goes.
google avatar

Meagan C.

Yelp
This is my go-to spot for hungover lunch in the D. Only here (and on "vacation") would I dare to order fried cheese as an entree. oops. But it is soo good. And I love me a Baby Greek on the side. With such nutritious options I usually leave here feeling even worse than when I came. But that's what makes it such a guilty pleasure. If I am feeling really bad, I have to make sure to avoid glancing at the saran wrapped jello in the rotating glass case behind the counter. Ugh, just thinking about it makes my stomach feel queasy! But for fast cheap food, this place is A-OK!
google avatar

Lindsey J.

Yelp
This place is seriously gross. Greasy greasy food, and the vegetables on the salads seem to always be served near-expired. This place serves the kind of food that makes your stomach hurt later.
google avatar

Joseph C.

Yelp
Yes, I do realize that this is not a fine dining establishment. It is, after all, a Coney Island. Nonetheless, I feel like the quality of the food and the service has continually gone down over the years while their prices have gone way up. Also, the quantity of food that you receive is very inconsistent. I've had Hanis here that look like appetizers. The restaurant is not very clean, and don't even ask about the bathrooms. Some of the wait staff is very friendly, while others...not so much. I used to go here all the time, but I only go once in a while now. I hope they get their act together as I have had a lot of good times in this restaurant.
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
To me this is a totally mediocre coney. I've eaten here about 6 times now only out of convenience and it never knocks my socks off. Wish I had a Kerbys near me!
google avatar

Rachel E.

Yelp
Good for hangover food, hanis are great. Diner atmosphere Service is usually very fast. Can get busy on Sunday mornings. Overall 4/5, serves beer and wine.

Yelp
We Detroiters love our Coney Islands, but National Coney Island raises the bar from what you find in most neighborhood Coney Islands. Most Coney Islands are dive and that's part of what makes them great, but here you get the classic divey tastes and selections, but the professionalism and customer service of a big chain, but the environment of a place where everyone is treated like a regular guest. I've never had a bad food or service. The restaurant is always clean and The employees friendly. Parking isn't ideal, but the food and experience is well with the search for a parking spot when there aren't any available in the parking lot. The prices are very affordable, but you don't walk away feeling like, "you get what you pay for," you walk away wondering how you ate so well without breaking the bank. National Coney Island come Highly recommend by this guy. Now if you excuse me, I've got a Coney that's calling my name.

Tracy L.

Yelp
OK, let's make this really clear. The fries, ordered well done, came limp but the excuse was "big party in other room". Really? Only two tables here but moving on to the Wing Dings, you have to ask for Ranch (oh yea, everybody knows that....). Uh huh, smells like cow in the room. BUT, the dead fly in the coke really made a $45.00 bill seem right and as I write, my daughter is in the head liquefying her dinner. Me? I paid the bill and gave the idiot a tip = It is Christmas and I am not a jerk but your tip career will not work out so good if you don't lose that attitude. And the Manager, gave me $4 in coupons off my next experience. Chef Ramsey would have flam bayed these guys. DNR.

Eric B.

Yelp
Coney dogs have changed. Not nearly as good as they used to be. Also, the Gyros have changed, and are horrible
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
What more can you say its a coney dog and fries hard to beat that. This is a staple company of michigan and should be apart of everyone's diet lol.
google avatar

D R.

Yelp
My favorite "National" Coney location. There are better coney islands out there if you don't mind the greasy spoon type restaurants usually located in in the hood or at least with a bit of a drive but National is a clean restaurant with good food and has a decent coney. I could be wrong but I believe this is one of the first 3 nationals and has some old school ambiance to it. I do like how the waitstaff at this location take your money instead of having you take it to a crowded register like other locations- never made sense to me.

Tayler J.

Yelp
Obviously it's not the same as Lafayette Coney Island downtown, but National Coney is good in terms of food, quick service, and convenience. For the most part, the service I have experienced is superb and fast and the food is for the most part good quality; what you'd expect. A downside is that it seems like the management lets it get run-down and worn-out before they do anything to upgrade or make improvements, and sometimes it just seems dirty as a result. Nonetheless, the food is good and you can get in-and-out in like a half hour easily.
