The National Museum is simply spectacular and an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Stockholm. The newly renovated building itself is breathtaking—a perfect harmony of tradition and modernity that sets the stage for the treasures inside. From the moment I walked through the doors, I was captivated not only by the art but also by the sense of history and culture that fills every corner of the museum. The collection is vast and wonderfully diverse, spanning centuries of European art and design, with an especially strong focus on Swedish and Nordic works. Paintings, sculptures, applied arts, and design pieces come together in a way that feels both impressive and approachable. What I particularly loved was how thoughtfully the exhibits are arranged: the storytelling flows naturally, making it easy to appreciate masterpieces by world-famous artists alongside lesser-known but equally fascinating works. The museum also does an excellent job of being inclusive and engaging for all types of visitors. I found the interactive installations and detailed descriptions very helpful in deepening my understanding, while still leaving room for personal reflection and wonder. The staff were kind, welcoming, and clearly passionate about the art, which made the experience all the more pleasant. The café and museum shop are also worth mentioning—both beautifully designed and a perfect way to complement the visit. And with its location right by the waterfront, the National Museum offers stunning views of Stockholm, making it a cultural and aesthetic delight inside and out. If you visit Stockholm, don’t miss the chance to step into this treasure house of creativity and history—it’s a place that truly lingers in your memory.

If you are visiting Stockholm this is a lovely art museum to visit. There is a good representation of a variety of mediums. Additionally, it is a beautiful building. Don't miss the ceilings in the restroom area - they are amazing! We also had lunch there, and the daily offering was delicious and service so quick

Great museum to visit! The prices are good and the historical artifacts on display are very interesting to learn from. Located right by the waterfront were all the boats are docked. Staff was very nice and polite. Recommend visiting! Good job 👏🏻

Very well thought out and designed art museum in Stockholm with art spanning from up to 800 or so years ago to present day. The displays are set up in a walking loop, so you can start at the early years until present. There was no wait time in buying an entrance ticket, and the museum is laid out so there's no way you'll get lost. There are audioguides as well for a mood engaging experience. It's worth the time and money if you're in Stockholm and love museums.

Nice national museum, worth a visit and the price is excellent. They are trying to make it a bit more child friendly too, but still some work to do. The pieces there are interesting and come from all over europe and give a good sense of Swedish history in a wider context.

Recently renovated, the national art museum has free entrance. It has some exhibitions that cost but the main collection is very good Special emphasis is on Swedish, lovely glass and furniture collection as well. Café and restaurant on entrance to the left and shop and cash desk in front. Lift to the right of it. Great amount of locker and toilets in the vaulted brick basement level

A very nice museum with a well-curated and diverse collection. All the exhibition halls are thoughtfully and beautifully arranged — it’s simply pleasant to walk through them. There are free lockers for backpacks (note: large bags are not allowed inside), and there’s a decent restaurant where you can even enjoy even a glass of wine. Don’t miss the gift shop — it has a great selection of art-inspired souvenirs. The museum also offers programs for children, but it’s best to register in advance. Definitely worth a visit!

Important: It is about art only, explaining how it evolved. If you want historical events outside art, that is somewhere else. You may learn how to replicate statues, go around several rooms with lots of paintings and pieces of art. They have an extensive audioguide. Some pieces have a QR to listen to a piece of music. And cats. Paintings of cats. It has a nice cloakroom and an umbrella locked rack, or so I thought. There are several bathroom rows, so there are plenty of toilets. Meow.

Yelp
Very good museum showcasing art (including some jewelry and interior design objects) from many countries, but primarily Scandinavia. Allow at least 2-3 hours. There is a nice interior picnic area if you prefer not to go to the museum's restaurant or cafe.

Yelp
I love art museums and the Nationalmuseum is the largest art museum in Sweden. It is the state museum and has exhibits with paintings, sculptures and design objects. It is one of Europe's oldest museums, dating back to 1792 (though this building did not house the collections until 1866). Tickets to the permanent collections are free. When I visited, the temporary exhibit was not something that appealed so I did not purchase a ticket for that one. Most of the paintings are Swedish artists I have never heard of but here and there were some names that I did recognize. Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet and Paul Cézanne. There is a large Asian exhibit, a display of jewelry (brooches, bracelets and rings), pocketwatches, and much more. Expect two hours at minimum, a half day if you truly want to see everything. [Review 18727 overall - 61 in Sweden - 2250 of 2022.]

Yelp
This is a beautiful museum, definitely worth the trip. The admission is free and the building has recently been renovated. The architecture of the place is beautiful. The art is from many generations and styles but showcases the art of Sweden quite nicely. I didn't feel like I was in any museum in Europe, it was decidedly Swedish. It is a well-spent afternoon.

Yelp
Older reviews mention a fee, but since reopening, most of the halls (excluding some temporary exhibits) are now free for everyone. This was a good chronology of Swedish art, mostly painting. Signs told the right amount of high level info in Swedish and English, and a free audio guide via app could go into much more depth. There are a handful of French and Italian masters, presented in the context of the Swedish artists they influenced. I also particularly enjoyed the exhibit on Swedish design, exploring how it has evolved and what makes it unique.

Yelp
The Nationalmuseum Sweden is one of the most beautiful museum buildings in the world. Closed for renovation until 2017 the museum now shows their collections and exhibitions in several different venues around Stockholm, Sweden and internationally. See collections exhibitions at Konstakademi or changing exhibitions at their gallery space on Terminal 5 at Arlanda Airport. There is also a great collaborative space at Kulturhuset.

Yelp
The Atrium is the restaurant inside the national museum of Sweden (Nationalmuseum), hosted inside the centre courtyard of the museum. The interior is quite light with the ceiling, being all glass, several floors above. The food is like what you can expect from an eating place inside a museum but a bit higher quality. All the food seems to actually be cooked on the premises with fresh ingredients, however maybe not the best considering the amount of fat on the pieces of beef in the stew I had. Food is good enough though and it is a nice place to sit down to relax your tired feet after walking around the museum.

Yelp
Probably the most extensive and renowned collection in town. Please dedicate at least one half or better full day to fully explore all its sections.

Yelp
I visited the National Museum just today. Currently, adults are 120kr; students are 100kr. The museum has a nice collection of paintings. I was delighted to see Rembrandt's self portrait as well as a version of Munch's The Scream. There are 3 floors (including ground floor): Ground: special free exhibit, ticket office, gift shop, lockers/coat area (requires a 1kr deposit) First: Swedish design, from 1500-present. Second: Nordic/European paintings and sculptures, from 1500-1800ish. + special exhibits I thought the gallery was just the right size--not too big and not too small. We were there for about 2 hours; probably going back for one more visit would still be just as enjoyable. If you like studying all the works, I think it'd take at least a solid 3 hours. I enjoyed most of the paintings, but really liked looking at the modern design exhibit--old phones, calculators, chairs, the first microwave oven, etc. Very cool. Though I must add that the extra 4th star is really for their current special exhibit, The Four Seasons. I think it's only on until the end of May. I highly recommend that exhibit, especially for those who haven't seen Swedish painters' work. These paintings were quite different from what I've seen in canvas work; the lighting of the sky and water, especially those that depicted the long/short Nordic days, were really beautiful. This is one of the most enjoyable exhibitions I've ever been to at a museum. Overall, lovely museum. It not only has a nice collection, but the National Museum building is in itself a beautiful thing to see.

Yelp
After I enjoyed wonderful Old Master and 18th Century Paintings and Art,I returned to this art museum to enjoy its 19th and 20th Century paintings the following day.Paintings that I especially enjoyed by Nordic Country Painters included;Thomas Fearnley's"Arco Naturale,Capri"(Norwegian),Carl Hill's"Bois Le Roi,on Seine River",Bruno Lilijefors'"Poacher",Carl Wilhelmson's"Church-Goers On Boat",Ernst Josephson's"Watersprite",Anders Zorn's"Omnibus".Helmer Osslund's"Autumn",and Arvid Fougstedt's"Five Artists",among so many others.Other paintings that especially captivated me were Christian Ezdorf's"Coastal Landscape,Iceland",Francois Granet's"Audience With Cardinal Aldobrandini In Frascati",Claude Monet's"View Over Sea",Pierre Renoir's"Mother Anthony's Tavern",and Edgar Degas'"3 Russian Dancers"',among others. The two days that I spent at the Nationalmuseum were very enriching. For non-Swedish visitors, there is labelling of their treasures in English as well as Swedish..

Yelp
Nice interior, food not great. Just sit there with a drink instead.
