Vegan and Vegetarian Food Carts To Visit in Portland | Eater Portland

"Tucked inside the Prost Marketplace food pod, The Native Bowl is one of Portland’s longstanding vegan food carts. Laden with vegetables, tofu, soy curls, most of the bowls are named after Portland neighborhoods. The Mississippi bowl involves barbecue soy curls, dill peppercorn ranch, and crunchy slaw over a bed of jasmine rice. Those craving some heat can try the Alberta bowl with garlic tofu drizzled in fire breathing dragon sauce. Although the menu hasn’t changed much over the years, this bright red cart remains a stalwart in the vegan community." - Waz Wu

I love the misconception that Vegans don’t enjoy food like everyone else. In reality, wonderful food carts such as Native Bowl completely breaks barriers with their delicious hearty portions that anyone should be thrilled to try. I promise there is more to eating guilt-free than celery sticks. Particularly - wholesome meals like this.

Google
Incredible spot! Local produce, protein options that are actually healthy, super friendly service, fully compostable takeout ware. Oh and did I mention it tastes superb??? I will definitely be making this a regular go to. Fav food cart in Portland!!!

Google
Delicious vegetarian food! And friendly. I got the chik’n salad, which was very yummy and nice & spicy with the siracha lime buffalo sauce. However the portion was huge — it was as if I filled an entire mixing bowl with food — so I wish they would offer a half portion, or tell people the dish could serve two people or one very hungry person, because I had to toss about half or 2/3 out which hurt my soul haha. Not sure if all the dishes are as hefty as the chik’n salad. But regardless, would recommend!

Stopped by the carts to see what was available. Thankfully everybody was open! Especially thankful for a 100% vegan menu available. I was craving veggies and Native Bowl supplied them! My partner and I got the Broadway Bowl and the Mississippi Bowl. We originally planned to share them, but we could not stop eating our bowls! The sweet bbq sauce in the Broadway Bowl paired so perfectly with the veggie slaw. My only personal criticism, I wish the soy curls were crispier. Otherwise it was a home run! The peanut sauce in the Mississippi Bowl... 😍 It was so good! I'm definitely getting this one next time. The tofu was perfect and all the flavors melded together beautifully. I cannot wait to come back and try more of this delicious menu!

Google
I do not even know where to start. The food was SO freaking good!!! Everything is vegan so that was handy. The staff was super friendly. I love the whole food cart vibe of this area. But the food... It was so damn good! I got the Albina bowl. The leftovers the next day were even better. I highly highly recommend you check them out, you will not regret it. So damn good.

Google
Sadly, came to enjoy and they were closed on midday 4pm on a Thursday. Hopefully they fix this so that people like us don't feel bothered that we drove 15 min to eat vegan food and they're closed. But it's in a cool food truck lot.

Google
One of my favorite places to go in town! I usually get the Mississippi bowl, it has a great balance of freshness and savoriness. Also has big portion sizes for the price which is always a plus. Definitely stop by!

Google
she’s an icon, she’s a legend. a Portland staple. <3 no notes.

Yelp
The Albina Bowl was delicious. Located in a food cart pod with multiple delicious food options. Service was fast, friendly and efficient!

Yelp
Massive amount of bland food for a reasonable price. I had the Hollywood Bowl and my husband had the Burnside Bowl. Everything was fresh and well-prepared; it just lacked flavor for us. We're not salt lovers and we eat a lot of veggies and meat free dishes. I wish I had asked for extra tahini or salsa or something to spice it up. I can't see myself returning for more. Bummer.

Laz D.

Yelp
First time going here over the weekend. I got the special "Morrison Bowl" with no rice (just salad) and almost asked for a second one. It was so good. Next time in Portland I will have to coordinate several meals here because they have more bowls I need to try. Quick, healthy, super tasty, and good customer service.

Yelp
Great vegan sport. Couldn't decide which bowl I wanted to try more. The broadway bowl didn't disappoint! I'll be back for the Buffalo!
google avatar

Crystal L.

Yelp
Over priced food cart food. The chicken was nothing but poultry gristle. The rice was good and the veggies were fresh. Save your money or get the tofu.
google avatar

Jo B.

Yelp
Fabulous tasting and vegan with good plant-based proteins, what's not to love! Recommended!

Yelp
I've been to Native Bowl only TWICE since I've lived in Portland. Which honestly, I feel makes me a terrible vegan. I have had the Buffalo Bowl and the Alberta Bowl. Both times the bowls are HUGE and packed with fresh, vibrant, CRISPY vegetables. The Buffalo sauce was good and that bowl rocked. BUT the Alberta. OH. YUM. The sauce was OUT OF THIS WORLD delicious. Spicy and creamy and perfect to accent the other flavors. The garlic tofu was seasoned to perfection as well. I would only change that the cubes are huge lol. I would do them half or even a quarter of the size but hell, the bowl was perfect to me Now I'll be honest, I have a weird thing with places I LOVE in that I like to try EVERY item on the menu. BUT I don't like Teriyaki or BBQ. My husband loves both and I've had bites of his and I don't like them. He however loves the sauces. I won't be able to give an opinion on the bowls with those flavors but to tell you my husband says they're 5 stars. I'll definitely be trying more and will update on my other finds! But this is worth every penny and you'll feel great after eating it!

Yelp
I'm not a vegan and I would never had tried Native Bowl if a friend didn't point it out to me. I can honestly say that this place is DELICIOUS!!! My favorite: the Mississippi Bowl. I must have eaten here five thousands times, it's my go-to happy place for food carts. Also, the guys are always super friendly cuties. PS - they use "soy curls" which is a totally unique Oregon product that is the best kept secret ever.
google avatar

Hyesoo C.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite food cart in Portland! It's filling, affordable, and healthy. I think regardless of what kind of weather we're going through in Portland, the meals from native bowl makes me feel at ease.

Yelp
That hardest thing about coming to Native Bowl is deciding on which bowl to get. They all sounded delicious so I just went with the special the had written on the board. IT was packed full of yummy fiber and protein. Important: make sure you opt for the roasted garlic. They were supper generous with the amount of garlic they gave you, and I felt it made the bowl that much better. It had been awhile since dining at this food truck pod and they have added some great seating areas at either Prost or at Bloodbuzz, which serves, coffee, cocktails and beer. We were able to secure a spot near the firepit at Bloodbuzz, were I also had the Girl & The Sea Cocktail. I would recommend doing the same.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
Oh man! Do they do bowls right!!! I got the Morrison bowl. Lightly spicy sauce that is delicious with some roasted garlic on top of the rice and veggies. YUM! This easily will fill you up and you'll have left overs.
google avatar

Yelp
This evening we treated ourselves to a Hollywood Bowl and a Burnside bowl. Husband had read some great reviews on Reddit and decided to go out of the way and drive over for some take out. And what an AWESOME choice that was! Portions are ridiculously huge and filled with tons of goodies including fresh veggies. Plus, each bowl was reasonably priced! I think the Hollywood Bowl was a bit tastier than the Burnside bowl. The Hollywood bowl reminded me of a vegan gyro but in a healthier bowl form. For sure worth the trek!!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
To the owner of the business please call me at 503-901-1996. My wife and daughter had an interaction with one of your employees yesterday and we need to sit down and talk with you and resolve this. Chris.

Yelp
My favorite food cart in all of Portland! It's my go-to lunch spot for casual lunches or early dinners, and everyone I've taken here (Portlanders or visitors) loves it! The Mississippi Bowl, with soy curls, slaw mix, green onions, rice, BBQ sauce, and Ranch dressing, is my favorite, but you can't go wrong. I especially love that the unifying theme of the bowls is vegetarian (easily made vegan), not ethnic profile. So there are bowls with an Asian flavor profile, a Greek-inspired bowl, Mediterranean, etc. Something for everyone! And the co-owner Noah is so incredibly nice!
google avatar

Keizzel C.

Yelp
Looking for something delicious, healthy, and affordable?? Look no further than at Native Bowl for their delicious bowls that are vegan as well! For bowls starting at $10 you can get yourself a filling meal filled with veggies, vegan protein, and yummy sauce. I enjoy the Albina ($11) that consists of "Teriyaki marinated chik'n, peanut ginger sauce, cilantro, roasted garlic cloves, spinach, carrots, scallions and toasted sesame seeds on a bed of jasmine rice." The bowl is a huuuge portion and easily shared between two people. The marinated chik'n is cooked well and flavorful. The veggies pair well with rice and is topped with plenty of sauce. I knocked one star just because I probably would like a little less sauce but I'll be sure to let them know next time. Overall the bowl was super tasty and honestly if you told me It was vegan I probably wouldn't have noticed since everything paired well together and was just a good bowl to eat for dinner. Staff was friendly and quick to get our orders. Saw them constantly washing hands and changing gloves as well.
google avatar

Ariel S.

Yelp
I was looking for a healthy lunch spot and came across this food truck. Asked for the most popular bowl that didn't include a vegan meat substitute. I was recommended the Morrison bowl. Healthy enough, but nothing special. A bit of heat, but the favor of the bowl was underwhelming.
google avatar

Carissa B.

Yelp
A vegetarian food cart?!? Yes please. I haven't had anything there that I didn't like.
google avatar

Jon T.

Yelp
Native bowl offers a variety of bowl options that are full of fresh ingredients and flavorful sauces. Profiles vary from peanut sauce to teriyaki to buffalo and more. Unlike many places, they do not skimp on the vegan protein. Many dishes include a fake chicken (seems like beyond meat) and my bowl was packed full of it! The food cart area is behind a bar, so you can also pair your meal with a pint (if you're so inclined.)

Chris B.

Yelp
Man... what? Was excited to try this place out but it was pretty bland. It was simply okay, really something that you can make at home and probably make better (if you can cook). Nothing special, sorry.
google avatar

Erin F.

Yelp
WOW. Incredible food! Vegans AND meat eaters loved it! We did a staff lunch and had to order here again the day after! Everyone loved the food! We ordered: the: Alberta bowl, Mississippi bowl, the Buffalo bowl and the Burnside bowl. The food feels very fresh, filling and fuels you without making your body go into a deep food coma afterwards. To-Go portions are large. Definitely could make 2 full meals out of it and they're quick! The flavors are delicious and unique. So glad we found something fresh and different than the same old Portland hot spots. Will definitely be recommending this for anyone else in NoPo.
google avatar

Kristina H.

Yelp
Visiting from Tucson, AZ and stopped here on suggestion from a friend...excellent! Had the Burnside Bowl. So yummy!!
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
Frickin' delicious bowls, and generous portions, and friendly staff. Is there more you could want? (Yes, a cocktail, and there's a full bar in their pod so you are totally set!) Incredibly worth it.
google avatar

Aniketa S.

Yelp
I've only had the Albina Bowl, it's so delicious, flavorful, and filling. The chik'n is sooo good. The portions are very filling and lasts me 2 meals. Good mix and ratio of fresh veggies, protein, rice, and sauce.
google avatar

Anne E.

Yelp
I love this place. They have great vegetarian options and the flavors are terrific. You can go mouth on fire spicey all the way to no heat. The staff are friendly and work quickly, even if they're flying solo.
google avatar

Suren D.

Yelp
Native Bowl is amazing! The food is delicious and the staff are all so friendly and fast. I'll go months without coming in and they still somehow remember my name and specific order. The food is unreal. I'm personally addicted to the "Albina" [Teriyaki marinated chik'n, peanut ginger sauce, cilantro, roasted garlic cloves, spinach, carrots, scallions and toasted sesame seeds on a bed of jasmine rice.] It's the perfect blend of eating healthy and treating yo self. Definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Portland.
google avatar

Nirvana F.

Yelp
Native Bowl offers quick and delicious vegan food served straight out of a food truck. I got the Alberta Bowl (because, oh my god, garlic tofu sounds amazing!) and was really happy with the flavors and the portion size. The dragon sauce had the right amount of spiciness and the carrots and other veggies complemented the tofu well. Ill be coming back to try the other bowls!
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
The burnside bowl was delicious! The produce was fresh and crisp. Super fast, super friendly! Highly recommend :)
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
This was one of the first places I tried in Portland after I moved to Oregon and it's still a favorite years later. I think the Burnside and Buffalo are my favorites, but I've never had a bad order. Super friendly and fast service, HUGE portions at a great value.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I stopped by and got a Burnside Bowl. I loved the many textures and flavors. It had a nice heat and lots of teriyaki soy chicken. The inclusion of roasted garlic cloves was genius! My bowl was super filling and quite a good size. I loved every bite. It was at times s but too saucy for me, so I may ask to get some of the sauces on the side in the future. Delicious and nutritious! I was one happy customer.

Alex F.

Yelp
Mississippi bowl is the way to go! The alternative tastes just like chicken. Sauce was the best.
google avatar

Susan O.

Yelp
Great food! Husband came to try another cart sonI wandered and ended up here. I saw people walking away with food that looked yummy! I asked what was recommended by the person working in the food cart and they recommended The Broadway. I love anything with peanut sauce so I accepted! The food came up in about 10 minutes and it is so fresh. Carrots, red cabbage, green onions, sesame seeds, rice, and some spice. Totally vegan and amazingly flavorful. Happy to know this is close to work so I can come during work week for lunch!
google avatar

Jesse K.

Yelp
Buffalo Bowl was so spicy I couldn't even eat more than four bites. It was like somebody was playing a prank on me I love buffalo sauce and I love spicy food but this was just straight up in edible. Not sure if the cook just had a heavy hand that night but it was all bad. Like the spiciest level Indian food
google avatar

Court W.

Yelp
Love this place! My boyfriend and I usually split one because the portions are so huge. The Tofu is cooked perfectly and there's no skimping on the sauce. Highly recommend
google avatar

Marissa C.

Yelp
The food tastes pretty darn good and you get a good amount. I got the Buffalo bowl, which had a nice spice to it and good buffalo taste. Bowls don't take that long to be made so no long wait time. My bowl cost $10, which I think might be one or two dollars too much. You do get a good amount but I'm torn. Everything is fresh, tasty, and healthy.

Penny H.

Yelp
Wonderful vegan options (even for meat lovers!). We liked the Morrison bowl. ( black beans, rice, kale, cabbage, carrots, green onions and a wonderful (but not too hot) siracha sauce!!! Very tasty! The other bowls sound good too! Lively atmosphere in a food truck court in north Portland with outdoor seating, beer and wine.
google avatar

Josephine W.

Yelp
Fast and fresh food in a cute little food pod. Everything I was looking for in a refreshing dinner. Not too heavy of a meal where you go home with a stomach ache, it was the perfect meal. Will definitely be a new food favorite
google avatar

K S.

Yelp
Doesn't matter if I order this through Yelp for delivery or if I go eat at the carts myself, the quality is perfect! Super yummy big fat vegan bowl, its a must have.

Yelp
I 've heard and seen the pictures of this food cart for several years now. I was visiting Portland last week and had to try it. The food cart is now painted aqua blue instead of black. I like it. Portland is already dark and cloudy all the time. The aqua blue color brightened the food carts environment, IMHO. My favorite turned out to be the Couch Bowl. It is pronounced 'kooch' and not 'couch' (the furniture you sit on) like I thought it should be. I guess it is named after a famous sea captain John H. Couch, a pioneer at Columbia river in Oregon. I like it because it is spicy, a bit sweet, and a bit tangy. The sauce is made of gochujang, a Korean red pepper paste, combined with other secret ingredients. The vegetables tasted fresh and the sesame tofu was savory good. This bowl definitely doesn't taste like something that Captain Couch would eat though. Unless Captain Couch also went to Korea, learned the cuisine, and took the red pepper paste home with him to Columbia river. Hence, kooch was so delicious! I ordered a small Couch Bowl and a small Mississippi Bowl. It's not that I am a pig but this may be once in a lifetime experience being I live thousands miles away from Portland and who knows we all will be vanished in 2012 as the Mayans predicted. :-) Mississippi Bowl was also delicious! The bbq soy curls were nice. If you like bbq and ranch dressing, this bowl is for you. Now, what I think COOL was the cylindrical Chinese-take-out bowls they serve it with. That was a fun bowl to eat from! You definitely have to use chopsticks(provided at the food cart) instead of a plastic fork. Otherwise, it won't be fun at all. My method was to plunge the sticks to the bottom of the take-out bowl and then pulled out the rice, tofu, and sauce while trying not to spill the veggies on top (you won't be able to do this well with a plastic fork). Then, I ate what I dug out to make some more room while I stirred and stirred until the veggies, rice, sauce, sesame seeds, and tofu were all mixed together. I would not recommend eating the bowl like licking ice cream cone from top to the bottom. The wonderful morsels are in the bottom and middle of the bowl so work at it until all combined together, you will be rewarded with yummy morsels. I bought several coconut macaroons to-go since I had no room for dessert. It was yummy also. It's really too bad that I live far away from Native Bowl. This is the kind of eating establishment that I will visit every week.
google avatar

Kayla L.

Yelp
This is my favorite food cart out of all the food carts in that food cart area. They are always open on time which the other food carts next to native bowl sometimes struggle to do! I have tried the Broadway bowl and the other bowl that is similar to the Broadway bowl but has spinach. I didn't like the bowl with spinach. For me, the spinach doesn't go well in that bowl. But the Broadway bowl is delicious! The bowls are pretty big. It is usually enough food for two meals for me.
google avatar

Danny D.

Yelp
This place was very close to where I was staying. I ended up ordering the buffalo bowl, it had pretty good kick to it. After I ordered it took about five minutes for the food to come out. They did a great job with the tofu, it tasted like chicken. The texture of the tofu was equivalent to chicken, i'm not a vegan by any means. I'm really impressed everything tasted, clean and healthy. Great place to get a quick bite.

Prerna K.

Yelp
Best vegan bowl ever! Wish that had more outlets. Totally worth your money! The garlic tofu is out of the world
google avatar

Jon O.

Yelp
NB is an awesome vegan option in this cart pod, which is becoming one of the best in the city. Their bowls are generous in size and they have some interesting options to choose from. The house-made sauces they add are tasty and you can usually count on them to be open (unlike some other carts in the area). I'm not really a fan of the faux-chicken soy curl stuff, and thankfully they're happily willing to replace any of it with garbanzo beans, which open up the menu for me. It'd be nice if they had another non-soy option (pinto/black beans), along with quinoa (instead of white rice) to mix it up with too. The Mississippi bowl is my go-to, but honestly they're all great. I'm not vegan or vegetarian but always enjoy a tasty, healthy meal from Native Bowl. The guys running it are always friendly and cool too. One of my favorite carts in town.
google avatar

Scott p.

Yelp
Great vegan food stand. No tables, but bring the food to a table at Frost next door and order a drink!
google avatar

Makaela E.

Yelp
Seriously LOVE this place!!! All the menu options sound amazing and you get so much food for what you pay! I brought my non-vegan family here and we all ate til we were stuffed!! One of the bowls even inspired my mom to want to make her own soy curls. One of my favorite veg spots in Portland. If you're looking for food you know will be good, go here!!
google avatar

Ace E.

Yelp
If you are a vegetarian or vegan this is one food cart that gives you flavor options. They offer a number of rice based bowls with different sauces, veggies, and meat alternative proteins. I couldn't eat a whole bowl in one sitting and I'm a 185+ pound 6' male. Come hungry!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
I was at the food pod and wasn't wanting bbq, tacos, or sandwiches and tucked back in the corner is Native Bowl full of fresh veggie goodness. I had the Morrison Bowl which was asian inspired with the fire breathing dragon sauce with lots of ginger and spice. It was SO good and I was glad they didn't have the pseudo-meat as part of this bowl. It was $10 with hardly any wait and was so filling. I'm not a vegan, but this bowl was exactly what I was craving!
google avatar

LiLy B.

Yelp
I had the morrison bowl, a "fancy" spicy rice and beans...it was tasty but definitely not worth the money
google avatar

Karen B.

Yelp
They were so patient when I was struggling to decide between the Garlic Tofu with Fire Breathing Dragon sauce or the Sriracha lime buffalo chik'n with dill peppercorn ranch and cilantro kale superfood salad. -There's a dozen or so bowls to choose from, most on the mild side, but I was all about the spicy. I also wanted to balance it out with some crunchy greens. They were so helpful when they suggested a custom bowl so I could get the garlic tofu with the fire breathing dragon sauce AND the cilantro kale superfood salad. I will definitely be back to get the sriracha lime buffalo chik'n. All the flavors made my taste buds dance. This is raveworthy food.

Yelp
This girl came up to me today and said she recognized me from this vegetarian cart the other day. I was confused because I never met herbivore. *crickets* If I'm not eating at Homegrown I'm here getting something more lighter to eat. I could really eat here every single day of the week because it's just that damn good. I also love the tea they serve here and they give free refills of it too! Tip for Yelp: GEAD
google avatar

Samantha A.

Yelp
I have seen the other yelp reviewers be very excited about receiving their bowls, but I have not had the same experience. Yes, the food was quick, but it really was a disappointment. On the menu, my bowl seemed decadent, and flavorful, but here's what it was actually like. I got the Alberta bowl, and overall, as a person who loves sauce on my food, I do have to say that there was far too much sauce on my bowl, and yet it was flavorless. Overall, I was disappointed, and almost spat out my food (it took me five minutes to swallow one bite, it was revolting). Would not recommend to anyone I even remotely liked. I would only give the one star because of the speed in the making of the food. Will not be coming back anytime soon.
