"Native Burger in the Richmond excels in the art of the Big Ass Burger (BAB for short). The BABs here are stacked high with thick, perfectly juicy patties that are constantly sizzling away on the flat top grill. The menu has predetermined options in the toppings department, like The Northern with grilled mushrooms and swiss or The Classic with fresh red onions and pickles. But the consistent showstopper is The Native, which comes crowned with a pile of sweet candied bacon. Ordering that and a bowl of their twice-fried fries is a foolproof way to zhuzh up an otherwise boring weeknight. photo credit: Brit Finnegan" - Julia Chen

Loved this spot! Great atmosphere and fantastic food with unique flavors. We had a peanut allergy and a vegetarian diet to accommodate and they were able to do so easily and had several menu items that were friendly to their diet needs. Only thing that was unfortunate was that parking wasn’t clear and where I did park, I got a ticket, so be mindful!

I had dinner here with my family and a colleague. I loved the atmosphere and the decoration. The service was great. The portions are very large. I'm not impressed with the Pho. Other than that, we had a great time on a Saturday night.

Incredibly nice people working here, very accommodating and polite. The food looked a little plain but was really flavorful and delicious. Recommended The spicy edamame and the laksa curry. The drinks are really creative and fun, too.

I don't want to short change this establishment so I am ONLY reviewing our dishes which was my Pho Noodle Soup w/ brisket and Wife's Miso Ramen soup. First off my background, my wife is from Thailand. For years I have adopted her way of cooking, flavorful and tasty. So you cannot imagine the way I felt when I tasted my soup from Native Plate?? Absolutely NO TASTE. The brisket was moist but very few pieces of meat, the rest of the bowl was just a glob of noodles in a liquid. What I was taught eating from home is to always add Fish Sauce and White Vinegar to Asian soup which brings out the taste. Native Plate had fish sauce but no white vinegar on hand, 😕 bummer. Unfortunately I could not finish my bowl with satisfaction. In conclusion Native Plate has a very nice atmosphere. Tables are tight and patrons are shoulder to shoulder in some places. There is seating at the bar and by the window which might offer a little more space and privacy. Street parking is metered and does take coins, bills and credit cards. There was a nice working class crowd mixed in with the locals when I was there. The other dishes at this restaurant actually looked more flavorful on the other patron tables, which I am sure offered way more taste than my bowl of soup. Asian food is very tough to master if a Chef doesn't have an Asian culinary background some dishes may slip under the radar without noticing which Is why I changed my trademark mask for this review. Google
I went here with my partner, we shared the paradise pork as an appetizer, and I ordered the polynesian stir fry and they had the banh mi. The pork was fried wonderfully, but I thought the portion was a bit small for the price. However, both entrees were generous and delicious. Overall I recommend giving this place a try for a nice night out.

We visited Richmond for a night on our way home from a vacation and this place was within walking distance of our hotel downtown. I had the Dan Dan noodles, a dish I had heard of before but never tried. By far it was one of the best things I've eaten on my trip, just spicy enough for me and with a texture that constantly kept me invested in the dish. The service was friendly and quick, making the experience seamless. Overall, I'd definitely visit this place again if I ever came back to Richmond.

Good vegan option off 95, downtown Richmond. If you are in a hurry parking and wait may not be ideal FYI. Otherwise no complaints

Yelp
I've passed this place several times on my way to and from work. I finally was able to try it out with my friend on Saturday. The drinks were good ! Food was amazing ! Great options too if you're vegetarian ! It was pretty empty around lunch time but totally worth the lovely environment! The staff were friendly as well and the service was good.

Yelp
I have now eaten here three times and have to say it is my go to place when in Richmond. The food is so so good. The service is excellent and friendly and their cocktails are amazing. If only I had a local restaurant like this I would be very happy. The vast majority of dishes can be made vegitarian as well if that is what you want. I do not know if you would class this as a neighborhood gem as I don't know the city that well, but I would call it that as so many locals appear to be there. They do take out as well. Highly recommend a visit.

Grace K.

Yelp
I have been twice already on my visits to Richmond, food has great taste and very satisfying, the rest of my group was very happy on our dinner restaurant option.

Charles G.

Yelp
Great food, be prepared its very spicy, but well prepared. Really small place. Will say when we were there mid afternoon, and not a lot of tables were seated. So surprising service wasnt super attentive and we had to call them over a few times. May have been prepping for dinner service so cant be too harsh.

Yelp
We hit the place to have dinner with friends and it was such a vibe. We sat directly opposite the kitchen and had access to some "great smells" throughout our night. The server recommended us to try Guava and Pinacolada mocktails which were on point. As we are vegetarians, we ordered the GOCHUJANG CAULIFLOWER - which was delicious. For the mains, we split the Curry Laksa with tofu. The noodles were incredibly tasty. All in all, we had a nice time out and wouldn't hesitate to come back again.

Pat C.

Yelp
Went here on a Friday night. Pretty laid back atmosphere. Miya, our server, was wonderful and gave recommendations. Blackberry bramble was alright. Grilled octopus was a little tough for me. Pok pok wings were good, which reminded me of korean style fried chicken. Bulgogi BBQ was sad. It was not flavorful and tastes like you ordered some random Chinese takeout. Curry laksa was alright. Overall experience was so so. Would give a 3/5. Would not go back

Kelli J.

Yelp
We were walking by and this spot looked nice so we stopped for dinner. Cute decor but the food left us underwhelmed. The food was not very flavorful and mediocre at best, I'd give it a 5 out of 10. Unfortunately I don't think we would go back.

Chvonne R.

Yelp
The restaurant is super cute and nicely decorated. It's cozy and small. The staff were really friendly and helpful throughout my dinner. The food was nicely presented however it was not that what I was expecting based on other reviews. The edamame wasn't cooked fully so it was hard to pop it out of the shell. The chicken was fried so hard that we barely tasted any chicken in the bites. The Singapore noodles had this weird sweetness to it that just didn't mesh well with the dish. The star of dinner was the cauliflower. It had a really good taste and cook to it. Not sure if it was the night we tried as far as chefs but I probably wouldn't revisit due to the food.

Ruchi D.

Yelp
Loved eating here on a weeknight. It was very fresh and very vegetable friendly. They were able to adapt many dishes to be vegetarian. We sat at the bar. I ordered the curry laska and the Singapore noodles. Portion sizes are larger and can serve as two meals. Good cocktails. Ambience is confusing- seems like modern grey themed eatery but food is much different than expected from bland decor.

Crystal R.

Yelp
This place was super cute! The bulgogi definitely does not taste like bulgogi but it's not bad. The curry puffs were really good! My favorite was the Szechuan chicken because I like spicy but the pineapple chicken was good too. Drinks were good and service was good. Not bad. I would go again.

Abby S.

Yelp
Native Plate is a really cool place with good vibes and great deals. We came in for lunch and the restaurant wasn't too crowded, but it did take a bit for them to receive and place our order. We got quite the smattering of items, a few appetizers and entrees. They were great with an allergy accommodation at the table - anyone gluten free, they were super receptive and attentive! My favorite thing was the veggie gyoza, it had a great crunch and was served in a nice portion for a shared appetizer. The Vietnamese coffee was another big hit, I love that they served it as it was brewing. Really fun to be part of the process! I got the Pho as well, which was a huge portion and a great deal for lunch. I did find myself looking for some spice in each dish at the table, there wasn't a lot of heat to balance the flavors. I would love to return and try some more items in the future.

Sarah M.

Yelp
Food was yummy! We came for lunch and really enjoyed ourselves. Our sweet waitress was attentive and made our cocktails delicious! Food came out fast and fresh! Would dinner here again. My husband got the spicy ramen and I got the pineapple fried rice with chicken!

Tori N.

Yelp
I got into Richmond for a work trip and was excited to try Native Plate. The menu looked awesome and exciting. I ordered the Vietnamese spring roll and added shrimp, and got the curry laksa. The restaurant was a little dark inside when I went to pick up my room, but it was full and people seemed to be having a good time. I ate in my hotel room since it was late, and the food traveled well. I was a little disappointed, though. The spring rolls were very sticky, you had to really pull them apart from each other, as the rice paper stuck together like glue. The taste was good, but the shrimp was sparse, I think I had one shrimp in each roll. But the peanut sauce was good. The curry tasted good, but the ratio of noodles to curry was really disappointing. There were a ton of noodles, chicken, and veggies in the container which was awesome. I'm not sure if it was it was because it was a to-go order but there was very little curry in the to-go container. Because I ate in my hotel room and didn't have a bowl, I used the noodle/chicken container as my bowl, and the curry barely covered the bottom of the container. The elements tasted really good, but the noodles, chicken, and veggies were a little dry because of the lack of curry. Maybe if I did dine in it would have been different, but I wish I had a better experience.

Yelp
Friendly staff, good service, wide variety of offerings. I decided to stop in for dinner a couple of weeks ago while I was staying downtown. Based on the yelp reviews, I opted for the gochujang cauliflower and the Dan Dan noodles. The cauliflower was tasty, but they were a bit overcooked for my liking (would have liked them better if they weren't so soggy). The Dan Dan noodles had great flavor and were spicy, but I thought they tasted better when they were reheated up later. Overall, not a bad experience, would try this restaurant again if I were in the area.

Elyza B.

Yelp
Native Plate is SO good. Everything was literally so amazing - the waitstaff were incredibly kind and helpful navigating our food allergies, the bar tender made me a delicious mocktail mojito, and our food was so so fresh. They are in fact a scratch kitchen, and everything tasted like it was grown out back and picked just for our meals! We can't wait to bring family and friends here! My one teensy complaint is that it gets a little smoky when they cook, as there doesn't seem to be much ventilation, but that would not stop me from coming back. The decor is cute and the ambiance is also so peaceful :)

Cassie M.

Yelp
I went here on a Saturday with 3 other people. There was a good amount of options so we tried a few different things. I got the curry laska which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a great combo of sweet & spicy. The flavors were great, & it was filling. The inside had chill vibes and it was a nice place for a weekend lunch.

Michael S.

Yelp
I took my adult daughter to lunch and we decided to try a new-to-us spot. Native Plate was a good find. We were able to be seated immediately at an accessible table, and service was prompt. My poke bowl with tuna was excellent, with the tuna threaded like a tartar rather than chunked like sashimi. Well portioned, a melange of flavors. I will order this again. And again. My daughter's peanut salad was also good, I liked the dressing that accompanied. Her buttermilk fried chicken bahn mi was excellent. Good bread, well "stuffed." The chicken was tender and moist. We were pleased to be able to get through lunch in under an hour (it was a work day, after all) without feeling rushed. By the time we left there was a line waiting to get a table, so I suggest you arrive early if you are in a hurry.

Joe O.

Yelp
By sheer luck or divine culinary guidance we happened upon Native Plate during our east coast roadtrip to NYC for the holidays. We had many enjoyable meals in Brooklyn and Manhattan but our favorite was this little gem in Richmond. Everything about Native Plate was superb. The seating is comfortable, the vibe chill, and the music so good that I asked for the streaming link. The drinks were outstanding, the Pok Pok chicken wings were crispy, savory, spicy, sweet perfection and our all-time favorite wings, along with the Singapore noodles. The wait staff was welcoming and I much enjoyed my conversation with the bartender. In the future when on I-95 and passing through Richmond, we'll plan a stop at Native Plate, our new favorite restaurant.

Yelp
Sorry, too shady for my taste. A few of us went for lunch last week. The food was good enough and we all shared a few things. I later realized the charge that showed up on my credit card statement was $5 higher than I tipped. Essentially $25 total became $30. When I called to speak to a manager the next week I was told they would not be in and to call back the next day. When I asked a question in attempt to follow up I was told there was no manager on-site that I could speak to today. They took down info and would share my request for a call back. When that didn't happen I called back and was able to speak to the manager. The conversation revealed a lot about their attitude and care for their customers. The manager failed to apologize for the mistake (or was it?) and made several excuses in response. He eventually mentioned something about "sorry" and would look into refunding the additional money (TBD). I feel an appropriate response would have started off by returning my call, next by apologizing for what occurred and ensuring me it's not a problem to take care of it, returning the extra charge to my credit card and saying that he would talk to the staff to ensure they are entering tips correctly and to take better care of ensuring you are not overcharging customers whether by mistake or truly as fraud. You can guess we won't be back or recommending this place to anyone anytime soon.

Yelp
I met a friend for dinner at Native Plate, and enjoyed the experience. The restaurant serves dishes inspired by Asian street food. It is located downtown on Main Street, so finding close street parking can be challenging at times - you will likely have to walk a couple blocks. The restaurant is not extremely big, but it didn't feel crowded. We got there at 6pm on a Wednesday and were seated right away - it was not very busy, although the empty tables slowly filled up over the next hour. The restaurant felt cozy with the dim lighting and comfy seats. The service was quick and friendly. I ordered the Chicken Bulgogi BBQ, which came with rice and sautéed peppers and onions. The sauce was very flavorful; the only downside was that the dish wasn't very hot when it came out. Overall a good experience though; I'd definitely come back.

Gloria Y.

Yelp
This is a nice place with OK food. Lots of food but really nothing that special. The service was polite but not great.

Tracey J.

Yelp
This was a great Asian fusion restaurant. We had the Spring Rolls with shrimp which was fresh and tasty with the sauce. The Paradise Pork was also very good. For the main dish we had the chicken and steak Indonesian Fried Rice which had a great flavor. The place is a small restaurant and was not crowded when we were there. The server was very attentive and explained the menu to us pretty well. This is definitely a place to try.

David R.

Yelp
Very friendly and helpful staff; creative cocktails; and most importantly, excellent food. We had the larb gai, calimari, and nasi goreng. Everything was good with larb gai being our favorite. Nicely spicy without being overbearing.

Kierra P.

Yelp
Very casual ambiance, decorated nicely. The food is to die for. The fried cauliflower is the best fried veggie I've had anywhere. The rice was delicious especially topped with the over easy egg. I recommend double servings of steak and chicken because you're going want left overs. Service was quick.

Stefán Y.

Yelp
The food was absolutely AMAZING! As a vegan, I am throughly pleased with the menu selections for people who are plant based. For appetizers, we ordered gochujang cauliflower and rice paper rolls; both exceptionally delicious. For my entrée, I ordered the Bao Buns with tofu (on the menu it says duck so shout out to my waiter for the recommendation) and they were DEVINE! I highly recommend this place to anyone who is plant based. The staff were all friendly and the service was top tier. The food came out fast which was good for us being that we were hungry for lunch. The ambiance was extremely chill and laid back with a welcoming vibe.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this spot for a while and am grateful I finally did. I came in on a Tuesday night and it wasn't too busy. We were a group of three. ***LOCATION*** Located in downtown Richmond, it's on Main and 12th st. There is street parking out front (mostly pay to park spots). ***EXPERIENCE*** This feels like a great place to order family style so you're able to try all their Asian and American influenced street food. My group wasn't looking to do family style, but here is what I tried: Blackberry Bramble: Got excited that this cocktail had homemade ginger beer in it. I think I was hoping for more of a blackberry kick. The ginger outshined all the flavors and was still yummy. The drink photographed really well and I loved the orchid on it. Ahi Tuna: I'm a huge sucker for seaweed salad, so I was really happy this came with the dish. The sesame crust was delightful and the tuna paired well with the ponzu sauce. I was glad to try this appetizer. Duck Bao Buns: The Taiwanese rice buns were a bit reminiscent of soft pretzels (in the best way possible). The duck melted in my mouth. It was a really yummy dish. There was enough duck in it, but because I liked the duck I found myself wishing they stuffed more in it. My partner got the Salmon Larb Salad and said it was exactly what he wanted. I love the decor and vibe of this restaurant. It's very cozy. The service was quick in the beginning then had a French feel at the end. (What I mean by French feel) They left us to enjoy the meal and didn't bring the check until we called them over. ***PRICE*** For my two dishes and cocktail I paid about $60 (this shown price is with tip and tax included). ***BATHROOM*** There were two single stalled all gender restrooms. They didn't really match the cozy vibe of the restaurant, but it wasn't a deal breaker (it is just a restroom after all). ***CONCLUSION*** While I really liked what I ordered, I don't know if I'd come back for those things alone. I want to come back to try more though.

Yelp
I like the Dan Dan noodles they are full of flavor with tender bulgogi steak. Please order the entree just as it comes with any variations that will alter the flavor. The dumpling are tasty and crispy and served with an excellent dipping sauce.

Serah M.

Yelp
The food and service were amazing! I sat at the bar and ordered a Moscow mule during happy hour, a peanut salad which was great portion for such an affordable price, and the tofu bulgogi bbq. Everything was sooooo delicious. I am vegan and would definitely recommend this restaurant even though most items aren't vegan. The service was excellent and they seemed very accommodating to requests.

Gretchen S.

Yelp
Good food. Fun and lively atmosphere. Interesting cocktails! The servers were friendly and fast.

Luice T.

Yelp
Great ambiance and great flavors. An interesting collection of Asian dishes on the menu (i.e. Thai, Korean, Malaysia, all of the countries!). I got the larb salad with octopus. The flavors were right but it was mostly romaine lettuce and like 4 slices of octopus. Not quite enough food to be a main course. Shared the gochujiang cauliflower appetizer - crunchy and spicy. Good flavor and good size. Served on chopped romaine lettuce. My friend got the Malaysian curry. The broth was flavorful but light (wanted more intense flavor), the flavors didn't permeate the slices of chicken. Not the most authentic but I enjoyed it and would like to try more items on the menu.

Karen S.

Yelp
Food was great, especially loved the cauliflower appetizer and the curry bowl. Our waitress was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. Super busy for lunch so come early or late unless you don't mind the wait.

Sharman M.

Yelp
The service and food were fantastic! I had the teriyaki salmon with veggies and rice. It was delicious and very fresh and flavorful. The service was prompt and the restaurant location is convenient for parking and quickly accessed by major roads/interstates. Well worth the trip and I highly recommend this restaurant!

Ashley C.

Yelp
This has become our go to spot for lunch! It is a great place to meet, the service is fast and the food is always fresh and delicious.

Laura R.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! Small family business with welcoming staff. Easy walk from a nearby hotel for a business trip.

Aaron M.

Yelp
Amazing food, ambience, & staff. Visiting from out of town and the fried rice and pineapple dish were amazing. Also tried a couple of their draft beers, which were fabulous as well. Bartender was amazing and provided us with best places to see in Richmond. Definitely a spot NOT TO MISS!!

Vera M.

Yelp
Love the ambiance, food was great too! And service was awesome! And bathroom was clean too (always important to me!)

Lex D.

Yelp
Any time my husband and I are in Richmond, this is one of our go to spots! Locally owned, cozy and aesthetic ambiance, friendly and welcoming staff, and DELICIOUS food and bevs! If you're visiting, and you have the honor of having Lorna or Caleb as your bartender, you're in for a treat! 10/10 recommend!

Erbira B.

Yelp
This was a great spot for lunch in downtown Richmond. We were a group of 4 and ordered the ahi tuna appetizer (very good), the Pho Noodle Soup (although it was very tasty, I didn't like that the beef brisket was a bit tough and grisly), the Tuna Poke Bowl (delicious) and the Hibachi Bowl with chicken (also very good). The only other thing we didn't like was that the chairs at the high top tables were SO small and uncomfortable! However, the service was great, ambiance very nice and food was fresh. Would definitely return but won't sit at the high top!

Sarah W.

Yelp
A friend brought me to Native Plate for the first time for my birthday. We ordered the truffle fries, Dan Dan noodles, and duck bao buns. Food was fresh, hot, and delicious! Lots of great flavors, nice atmosphere, and attentive waitress. Would highly recommend!

Marta F.

Yelp
My favorite food in Richmond! Great service, fantastic food, great ambiance! Love the bartenders Caleb and Nate, they always make the best cocktails and have great conversations.

Tatiana T.

Yelp
Delicious, cozy place in center of city. I like it! the service is pleasant and attentive

Joy H.

Yelp
At 11:45am on Tuesday November 19, 2024, I placed an online lunch order at Native Plate for Tom Kha Hot Pot (menu states that this dish serves 2) and a Poke Bowl. When I arrived at 12:10pm to pick up my order, only the Poke Bowl was in my to-go bag. I quietly told the server that half of my order was missing. She scurried away and came back to say that they forgot the Tom Kha Hot Pot and were preparing it. I told her that I would sit at a table outside the front door and wait for the rest of my order while I ate my Poke Bowl. As I was eating, I noticed that the receipt on my bag said they took a $6.36 tip for a $14 Poke Bowl (that is a 45% tip!) When the server came outside to give me the other half of my order, I asked for a corrected receipt because I was not going to pay a 45% tip for an order which they messed up. The server goes inside and gets the manager, who proceeded to tell me that the tip was based on the full order. I told her that I did not initially receive my full order and that I had to point out to the server that half of my order was missing. The owner explained that online orders do not print out in the kitchen, and they made a mistake when they re-entered my order in their system for the kitchen. She did not apologize; she just explained that the tip was correct. I told her that I was not paying for bad service. She then tries to defend her staff and said that I had been rude to them and had attacked someone in her kitchen. I could not believe her audacity! I had been sitting quietly at a table outside her restaurant and had not caused any commotion in her restaurant's kitchen. She then banned me from her restaurant and told me to get up from her table where I was eating her food (Poke Bowl). I told her that I was not leaving the table until I finished my lunch and she could call the police. She goes back inside as if she's calling the police, and I waited so I could tell my side of the story to the authorities. She suddenly comes back outside to say that she was only told that I was not going to pay the tip; she did not know that half my order was missing. She apologized and then questioned my integrity and asked how any of my colleagues could work with me. I told her that I was a nice person who does not believe in tipping for bad service. She refunded my tip, and I will NEVER go back. All she needed to do was apologize for an error; instead she chose to attack me for not being willing to pay a tip.

Yelp
I revisited Native Plate for Lunch and was amazed again. Their Lam salad took me back to Bangkok. I love this place, service is quick and cordial and I great spot to relax and avoid the "hustle and bustle" of the outside world.

Hope C.

Yelp
A friend took me to this spot for the first time on our lunch break! The restaurant is really cute inside. I liked how the menu had all types of different influences. I ended up getting a hibachi plate. My friend did as well. It was a perfect lunch portion and it was delicious! I wish I had more time, because there were a lot of other things I wanted to try. I definitely plan on coming back to try more!

K M.

Yelp
Great place for food and cocktails! It's small - maybe 15 tables, and as many bar seats. A wonderfully curated menu of Asian dishes - not an extensive menu, but wonderful variety. I had the pok pok wings and spring rolls; husband had a curry. Food was delicious. The bartender is friendly and knows what he's doing. Great mock-tails too.

Katherine Maty K.

Yelp
Cocktails were FANTASTIC! Great place to have a few drinks for happy hour. We also had some appetizers which were crispy egg rolls and pork gyoza. Those there tasty and filling. Lorna and Kaleb were really friendly and made really good drinks! We are from Orlando and visiting the area. What a great find!

MaraLee L.

Yelp
Delicious fresh food! Great atmosphere! Tasty drink! My cousin and I stopped here after work the other day and were happy to have such a great meal. We both ordered the blackberry smash (?). I can't remember the name but it was delicious for sure. Had fruit and ginger beer with a lovely flower on top. For food we could not choose because all of the dishes sounded so good! So we decided to pick two to split. The Singapore Noodles and Indonesian Rice. Both were FANTASTIC! But if I had to pick one over the other, I'd go with the rice for sure. It was a close call though. All in all, I was very impressed with the food quality and definitely will be coming back for round two. The lunch specials are very intriguing.

Leland L.

Yelp
I've been here for lunch while working downtown quite a few times. It's small and kind of loud but I've never had to wait for a table. The staff is super friendly and the decor is nice and fun. I absolutely love the food. It is thai-flare but the dishes are unique and intriguing. The first time I came I got the Curry Laksa- 10/10. This is my favorite dish I have gotten. Colorful with lots of flavor and different textures. Highly recommend recommend. It can be made gluten free as well. The Bulgogi BBQ was really good but didn't stick out to me from other typical stir fry dishes. 7/10. (I am always looking for what is both delicious AND unexpected) The Indonesian Fried Rice came with a lemon which was the perfect fresh touch. Also probably the biggest portion on the menu I've seen so you get lots of leftovers. Just wish there was more of a balance of vegetables to rice or more of a sauce. Very good but I thought the curry laksa was better. 8/10. Such a fun menu! I want to go back and try more things.
