This Inner Richmond Bar and Club Could Face A $30,000 Fine for Copyright Infringement | Eater SF

"A Clement Street haunt for college students and fans of lowkey shows, the bar is being sued by ASCAP for allegedly failing to pay licensing fees — violations that could carry fines up to $30,000. Hoodline notes the fee is a relatively small annual payment (a prominent bar owner estimated around $1,000) that many bars pay to play songs on jukeboxes, at open mics, and similar events; the San Francisco Examiner reports the venue held an ASCAP license from 2009 to 2015 but failed to pay its dues and had that license terminated. ASCAP says it has repeatedly tried to offer a license and educate owners, and frames the payment as compensation for musicians who are often paid poorly in the digital age." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
I loved this place. Saw some great bands and the sound quality was amazing. The staff is super chill and the environment in whole has great vibes. If i was a promoter I’d encourage all my bands to play here!

Google
My kid's band just played their first show here. Everyone is super nice and supportive. There's a surprising amount of seating and it's a good size room.

Google
Cool intimate venue. The ground floor had a ton of seating, which was very helpful. Definitely worth checking out.

Google
I actually like this place as it’s a multi level multi venue wonder. The drinks are good and priced right and the staff is really cool. I came here for the first to see my childhood friend and worldwide hip hop genius Planet Asia perform here upstairs on 2/28/25. The place has good space and is definitely a live music type venue and I like it. The sound system is nice and so is the lighting. This is a really cool place to check out some live shows. Only issue I had was a couple right next to me started smoking weed and the fans was blowing weed in my face choking me out as I’m a non smoker however I did let the couple know and they moved. Last I checked smoking indoors is against the law here and I think the staff needs to enforce that and occasionally make announcements on the mic about smoking outside. Otherwise this place is nice. Parking can be tough to find but it’s SF lol.

Google
Neck of the Woods is a vibe! Great drinks, awesome live music, and a super laid-back crowd. Whether you’re upstairs for a show or just hanging out downstairs with friends, it’s always a good time. Staff is cool and the energy here is unmatched. One of the best spots in the city for live local talent and a fun night out!

Unfriendly G.

Google
Awesome little venue, loved that they had self pour water and disposable cups for everyone!

Fae L.

Google
This venue was great! The speakers get damn loud, so bring good hearing protection. Drinks are about the same price as any bar around SF. Restrooms are a bit small and are gendered, with one pair on both floors, and a single unisex stall downstairs. I appreciated having seating scattered around.

Tyvonne “Ty” J.

Google
First and foremost shout out to Phora live lit performance I appreciated being able to see my guy live unfortunately the venue was inconvenient uninviting uncomfortable prejudice and an overall horrible feeling hated being in that place but for a person who makes honest stand up and inspiring and blessed music with a great message was awesome to see. But if you're a black man this is not a community or place or institution restaurant or anything you would want to spend your hard earned money on as being that the companies are entities that you're given into don't even respect you in the first place.

Yelp
Monday night salsa classes with Evan and Tatiana are so fun! They're great teachers and very encouraging. The space is quite small but classes are organized enough that there's enough room for everyone to dance during open dancing.

Yelp
Came here to see swallow the sun and they had food options. Next time we'll check it out. We had eaten prior to the show.

Yelp
I live in this neighborhood, and on Halloween night I went to the Inferi concert and it was really good. The bar doesn't have enough variety in drinks but the venue is good.

Yelp
A couple weekends ago, I came here with my brother to see Anything Box.* The show was amazing, and it was very interesting spending so much time beforehand with random people who were into this most random of random late-'80s-early-'90s bands.* It's a really nice setup for live music or whatever kind of performance can fit on the tiny stage. Oddly, the bathrooms are next to the stage, but this has a hidden benefit--it ensures that there's always an open space near the stage, so if you're standing right in front and want to go back, you don't have to wade through the crowd; you can just head toward the loo and make a left turn toward the bar. It's woodsy and old and well loved and not dirty. There really is a lot of room to stand (and sway and dance and groove and ruminate-while-crying), but they have a few tables as well. The bartender was nice, as were the bouncers. In fact, everyone we came across that night was nice. People were just so excited to hear this music from long ago. This very definitely could be a five-star place, but I need to see more acts here to add that fifth star. Who wants to bring me along to something at Neck of the Woods? *Sadly, the "group" now comprises solely Claude Strilio. He's a great performer in his own right, but it would be better if he could assemble a band again, even if it's new people.

Yelp
Went to view a wedding band this week...tasty beverages in a rustically basic bar in the Richmond Dist. Karaoke was taking place downstairs which seemed well attended. Always a treat to see and experience live music In person! Support local talent and businesses that support performers.

Yelp
Came here for the Crazy Funny Asians comedy show, and it was admittedly a hit or miss. Some made me laugh so hard, to the point that the white lady next to me gave me a dirty look and she and her partner slowly backed away from me as if afraid that my laughs will detonate into a bomb. Others weren't really funny, and there was a white guy thrown into a mix. WTF? It's a very tiny cramped spot. Get ready to be crammed like sardines with the rest of the audience. They were out of all the drinks I wanted, like the lychee cocktail, despite the fact that it was advertised on the menu. It was nice coming out for the experience, but not worth coming all the way out to SF for as a regular.

Yelp
Came here a week ago for the Browning, Hollow Front & UABB. Great little spot. No problem parking. Bathrooms were clean. Drinks were on point with fast service. And most of all plenty of room for the PIT!! Will definitely return for another show!

Yelp
I thought I would give this venue another try after all this time. What are the chances that the 2nd time was just as bad?!! Waited OVER 2.5hrs and the headline never showed up!!!!!! DJ kept saying he'll be out real soon...5 minutes. Another 30min later.....It was appalling! I'm sure the staff & bartenders worked really hard to serve everyone. But how is it that the act never came out?! Over 2.5hrs LATE?!?? WTF. People started leaving. So unprofessional. So disrespectful of our time & energy. Another ZERO STAR.

Yelp
Came for the Crazy Funny Asians comedy special. 5 stars for the show and the comedians but the ambiance made it difficult to stick around. Location is cramped with very very limited seating. 70% if the audience was standing. Would recommend coming in really early for seats. Also there was this god awful smell of some cleaning product that was used on the floors. It was really unbearable which also led us to leaving early. Also the two drinks minimum wasn't enforced. Not sure if it was due to the lack of seating if that was a one time thing. But if you come early and grab seats, the Crazy Funny Asian show will make the experience worth it!

Yelp
4/4/23 Tuesday, I came here for another comedy night, just as fun and inclusive. They ran out of tap cider. It's probably obvious, but they don't have all the ingredients for a full bar, so they can't make a pina colada for me. The pomegranate margarita I had was okay--nice chill environment with friendly staff.

Yelp
Came here for the first time! Loved the inside! There's a bar downstairs and the stage is upstairs where the magic happens. The bartenders are amazing here! So friendly. The inside looked so cool and the bathrooms were COVERED in stickers which I found it very cool, added a nice touch!
google avatar

Nikhil M.

Yelp
Came for the Crazy Funny Asians show which was great except for limited seating. The bar service was great and drinks were mostly priced between $12-14. Only wish the bar had more seating for the comedy night. They do have an upstairs area that functions more as a club but charges a cover and there's usually a small line.

Yelp
First time here for the New Years Eve event. Unfortunately it was just understaffed. Upstairs had 2, maybe 3 bartender (or 2 bartender and one barback), while downstairs had ONE bartender. Oh man I felt so bad for her! My friend and I was so close to jumping in to help as barback. Vibe was ok? Security was bomb! I had a vip ticket and my guy Cuahtemic was both kind and a freaking boss when need be. (Sad I couldn't find him at the end, I wanted to tip him!) Dunno about regular weekends, but at least for this event it was packed!

Yelp
The top floor is for comedy shows and the base floor is for music and dancing. Both are clean and have a good staff. I came here for a comedy show which was well orchestrated and super funny.

Yelp
been here over a 100 times to support my favorite musicians. I asked for the special $12 shot and drink combo. They don't have the "canned" beer i asked for, a modelo, so i get asked if i wanted it as a draft beer instead, i agreed. I ask where my shot is at the end of my bill to get told the special is with a "canned"beer only. Bruh, i would've got a draft IPA instead if your bartenders were more literate with their words. Some of the lowest IQ bartenders in SF :) lol

SF T.

Yelp
The bartender was the worst bartender I've ever experienced, just slow as molasses, I think she was on edibles or something then the dude came and he was even worse. He sold me a drink then started cursing loudly about how they're not a fucking club and we need to get out. I couldn't believe how rude he was. They need to get some serious customer service training. The dj was fun and we had a great night dancing.

Yelp
We went there for the Sunday night "Crazy Funny Asians" show. It was pretty decent for a local comedy show - though not all the comedians were Asian ;) The seating is not as crowded as they have at other comedy places like Cobbs - so much better for these Covid times. Those working wore masks and requested that patrons wear masks when not drinking - most did. The doorman checking tickets and seating people was friendly and helpful - he was also one of the comedians. The server bringing the drinks was efficient and nice. Prices for drinks is reasonable for SF, and they have some lower cost non-alcoholic options. They also have food on the menu - it is prepared and delivered from Koju kitchen just down the street. The bartender on the other hand was an ass. I hope he was just a fill-in because he was rude and was overwhelmed even though it wasn't that crowded. He certainly affected the mood in a negative way - not good for a comedy show. And I'd certainly hate to see him "in action" when the place is more crowded. Thus what would have been a 4 star review gets knocked down to 3 stars - only losing 1 star for the jerk bartender because the others there were pretty good. I'd go back, but I certainly hope he isn't there. --- If you want more details, read on --- putting this here mainly for the owners to understand that they have a problem --- Ordering drinks and food are done online - you can sign up for the special app or just enter cc info. I entered my cc info, placed the order and got a message that my credit card was confirmed. But no order confirmation. Did it again, same result. Checked with the helpful waitress who looked through the tickets and determined my order had not been placed. I checked my cc online and confirmed the charges did not go through. So I asked the bartender if I could order from him, he looked up at me and just walked away (ass-tender interaction #1). So I tell the waitress I'll try a different card. and go back to my table. While back at the table my S.O. goes to get some water since we have been there for 20 min with no drinks. The water carafe at the end of the bar is empty so she asks for it to be refilled. His response "Where did you get that?"; S.O.: "It was right here on the bar next to the cups"; Bartender: "Not my responsibility." (ass-tender interaction #2). The waitress sees this, steps up and says she will take care of it, bartender makes some other rude comment about it being her job. Meanwhile I enter a different card with the same result - so I go back to the bar and do it again while showing the waitress. She has no clue what is wrong (which is understandable) and I ask her if I can just order from her. He asks the bartender to take my order and he "warmly" responds "can't you see I'm slammed with all these tickets? So no, I can't. (ass-tender interaction #3). Oh BTW, there were only 4 drink tickets sitting there. So the waitress politely says - I'll come over when he isn't so busy and take your order. 5 minutes pass and we finally flag the waitress down, she apologizes and takes our order. By now the 2nd comedian is on stage and we still don't have drinks even though we arrived 20 min before the show even started. She places the order and a few minutes later she comes back - they are out of the beer i ordered. Turns out the bartender knew they were out, but didn't tell anyone. I give her my replacement and I see her filling my beer herself - we have to wait 5 more minutes for the cocktail to be made by the bartender. We have a 2nd round with no issues, other than slow cocktail making by the bartender. Then at the end I go to pay my bill, and the waitress asks me to settle it with the bartender since he has access to the POS system. I go to him, tell him I need to pay for our drinks and without a word he walks away (ass-tender interaction #4). A couple minutes later he comes back and calls the waitress over, snapping at her "I need to know what he ordered." So the waitress asks me what the drinks were - she couldn't remember which beers I ordered. I tell her and she relays it to the bartender who is standing right there (like one of those silly movie scenes when 2 people aren't speaking to each other so they communicate through a 3rd person). So I say to the bartender, "you could have asked me that 3 minutes ago". His only response - "Card!" meaning give me your credit card - and the only word he said to me in my 5 interactions with him. I wish I could have tipped the waitress separately, because I am sure he got a chunk of the tip I left. When I go back I will make sure we get the payment system working as soon as we arrive (maybe it had something to do with the cc info being auto-filled on my android), because I sure don't want to interact with a bartender there again.

Yelp
Unfortunately, Neck of the Woods has been a disappointing addition to the neighborhood. Their lack of consideration for the surrounding community is glaring, with frequent noise disturbances and disruptive behavior spilling over from patrons. While local bars should bring people together, this establishment seems to prioritize profit over being a respectful member of the neighborhood. I hope they take steps to improve their community engagement and become a better neighbor, but until then, I can't recommend this place. There are many other fantastic watering holes and music establishments in the area, no need to visit here.

Yelp
Felt catfished coming here on NYE for "Crazy Funny Asians" only to find 0 Asian comedians. It left me wondering if we were victims of an honest mistake or a failed marketing experiment. But after reading two other reviews that said the same thing, it just feels kind of sad. To give the benefit of the doubt, maybe there aren't enough Asian comedians, which is why we felt compelled to go. Either way, they should stop the false advertising. You start the night on the wrong foot, with your audience skeptical of your intentions and then your jokes. +2 stars for a cozy, intimate, and affordable spot to watch local comedians. I've been here twice now and wish I lived a little closer to make it more of a monthly routine. -2 for the catfish. -1 for multiple comedians borderline hounding the audience for being "too tight." One comedian even got visibly upset. If your jokes aren't getting laughs, take ownership. Use the silent feedback to improve your jokes and your delivery. For example, I noticed that several comedians can simply slow down to allow the audience to process the joke or to land the punchline. Part of being spontaneous and staying connected to an audience means making comments to acknowledge an audience that is less vocal, but if you do it too much, you're just blaming the audience for not laughing at your jokes.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday night to enjoy some live music. They had two different sets going on - one upstairs and one downstairs. We opted to stay downstairs because there wasn't a cover charge. Drinks were decent. Staff was nice. Music was okay.

Yelp
Fabulous joint w an upstairs and downstairs comedy club. Check it out. You order food while seated from a place across the street and there's a full bar inside! Try not to sit in the front to avoid being picked on my comedians

Yelp
Great place to see new band, a friendly staff, and atmosphere. Looking forward to their future shows

Yelp
Attended the HellaSecret comedy event at Neck of the Woods. A 2 drink minimum (strong drinks, choose wisely), Koja-kitchen catered dinner (decent portion sizes, although not many options), and 5 performances (most pretty funny). If you're COVID conscious, probably skip this. The tables were pretty close together on the sidewalk, one of the comedians wasn't even wearing a mask. Our event also started 30 minutes late. Good fun for a night, but wouldn't do again.

Yelp
I've been to thousands of live shows, I had never been to Neck of the Woods. This place is a good one. Hidden in the Richmond District of San Francisco, the bar offers an intimate venue experience for any concert. I attended the Blu & Exile show, a celebration of their Below The Heavens album. The stage was small but the room could house several hundred people. The sound system was decent but good have been a little louder. The bar is big and it is easy to get drinks. The special thing about places like this is you can get in close to the stage if you're patient enough. I hung out around the left side of the stage throughout the beginning of the show and before I knew it, I was directly in the front. It was like I had a personal concert from Blu & Exile all to myself, it was WILD. The crowd was loving the music and it was good vibes all around. After the show, Blu hung around and signed records and items that people had. Great spot to showcase some real Hip Hop. Spots like this are the ones you need to buy tickets for early, they sold out. So if you see an artist you like and they are playing at Neck of the Woods, buy tickets early and get there early. Who knows where you may end up.

Yelp
Staff was friendly. Downstairs bartender great. Just wish the band I waited 3 years to decided ti see break Sobriety and get totally plastered. Worst show I've seen ever. Opener was good.

Yelp
Went here to see sleeping with sirens and the intimacy that this place provided made a night I'll never forget!

Yelp
Cool spot for an intimate comedy night. The lady surprised me for my Bday. The comedians were funny. It was for Filipino Independence Day -- so the cast was all Filipino and 1 Indian guy. Had an issue with being over charged at the bar, and as soon as I walked up, the bartender knew exactly why I was there. Therefore, make sure you keep tabs. He fixed it right away though! We would definitely come back for other shows.

Yelp
Service was impeccable. And vibe was what you make of it. Mark definitely made it memorable.

Yelp
This place is likely the perfect size! Quintessential San Francisco. It's like the between period of weird SF and modern big tech SF. The tea room or whatever is around the corner in the back has cool wavvvy vibez and the groups who played were perfectly laid back. Loved this place and will come back.

Danny B.

Yelp
One of the best live music venues in San Francisco! And still independent! Underrated place. A lot seems to have changed within the last 2 years. All for the better. Unique curation of local to international performers. Wide variety of music. Sound is spectacular, a compliment to both the room and the audio engineers. Security and bar staff are very friendly and really make this place feel special.

Yelp
We bought tickets to a standup show here a few weeks ago, due to good ol bart delays coming in from the east bay, we missed our show time. There was another show after ours and the guy at the door was super cool about letting us choose to enter late or come back for the next show. This is a really intimate little spot with sticky floors and bright stage lights. The seating layout is appropriate for a standup show, and there are QR codes at the tables to order drinks which is nice.

Yelp
My boyfriend, friends, and I went to the Neck of the Woods to check out artists, Nick Jordan and friends. The music venue was located upstairs while the bar for the general public was downstairs. Not a bad spot for an intimate show. There was plenty of standing room space, but I liked that the outer perimeter of the place had chairs and low drink tables. The only thing that bugged me were the pillars in the middle of the room, which I don't doubt were there for foundational infrastructure purposes, but they obstructed certain views of the stage. The acoustics of the venue were totally fine particularly when Nick Jordan and friends performed. I could hear their vocals clearly enunciated over the back tracks. There weren't that many people ordering drinks at the time, so we really had no issues at the bar. The bartender that night was also super chill and friendly. We got beers, and they cost $8 each regardless of whether they were on tap or from the bottle. They had a variety of local IPAs on tap, which was a plus for me.

Yelp
Mark with the black hat was awesome! We had a great time at the end of the night with some karaoke.

Yelp
This is the worst bar in San Francisco. The bouncer tried to make it seem like he was about that life and was serious about checking ids but when he checked my friend who was not 21 yet he still gave her a stamp to get alcholic drinks. So when my friend who is under 21 takes a drink of alcohol he kicks her out like wtf!? Nah the bouncer gotta go worst vibes. Even when i was drinking my wine outside with my cigarette he tells me to come back inside bc i cant drink outside... Like dude be fr... how about yall get a patio!? Just bad service all around and terrible vibes.
google avatar

Anissa Z.

Yelp
Really fun for a night out. Great comedians and hosts. They bring the drinks to your table when their QR codes are working so you don't have to stand in line at the bar and so you don't interrupt the comedians' sets.
google avatar

Trish T.

Yelp
Very clean, well furnished and organized. There are 2 rooms/event spaces. We were upstairs to see a comedy show. Unfortunately the main comedian just wasn't funny. Kin of lame. But this review is for the venue. The venue is nice, we did drive around a bit to find parking but the area isn't too bad to walk a few blocks. Everyone from the doorman to the host and cocktail server was very pleasant and efficient. I'll definitely go to other events here. Great sound system and lighting as well.
google avatar

Yelp
This is great venue for true independent entertainment. I have seen concerts here and comedy here. I like the space which located in the Richmond District of San Francisco on Clement street. This place has an upstairs and downstairs often hosting two different events.

Yelp
I came here bachata and they taught me salsa. First they open doors late, then they delay the start of the class. During this time, I was dancing and messing around the bar before the class and there was a couple dancing moving me out telling me I was in their way..... Note the space in the picture, they had a whole dance floor to dance!?!?! Come to find out they were the teachers? So not only are you late, you show off and are rude to people who pay and are waiting for you? Horrible service. I tried to understanding and go with the class but there was horrible instruction. I really wanted to come here and learn bachata. I stood in the line for 30 minutes dancing to the moves. I am truly sad. I will look for a different place for sure!!!!! Youtube has better lessons!!! I don't really do bad reviews but be crazy adventurous somewhere else!

Sheril P.

Yelp
This place should be shut down. My daughter and her friend attended a concert. There was no crowd control and security did not help. The performer had to stop the concert 3 times because she saw some of what was going on. What was going on? People towards the front were being pushed up against the stage, pinned against the stage, falling to the floor. They were trying to "survive" by helping each other. They, along with others in the front had bruises all over their bodies and were crying outside. They were traumatized. Most of the people in there were young (my daughter and her friend are 17) and didn't think to call the police or fire dept to file a report, which is unfortunate. I spoke with the events manager and this person has ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY or sympathy. He kept telling me he cares a lot, but told me that maybe the girls were crying because they were happy to see the performer. Or, that they can expect to get close to the stage when they're in the first row. Or, that they should have raised their hands for help? IS HE FOR REAL?!?! I provided him the opportunity the review his camera footage and he offered to interview his staff and he could call me back with an update within a week. This was a month ago and I never heard back.....very telling that what he found wasn't positive for him. I reported this business to the BBB to prevent this from happening to anyone again.

Yelp
I loved going to hella funny Sundays. At one point it was free on Eventbrite. I believe it is $15 now. Mike and his six pack abs were the real draw.. Lol

Yelp
One of the best discoveries I've had this past year! I came randomly to grab a drink, and have been coming back since! The staff is amazing, super friendly and hard working and I love the chill but fun atmosphere. Mark and Andy especially have been the best bartenders! Super welcoming and always so helpful no matter how busy it is! It's the jack of all trades! I've been to the 90s hip hop nights on the weekends and always have a great time! Karaoke nights are also super fun! They have so much variety and everyone's there to have a good time.

Tyler H.

Yelp
What a diamond in the rough! Such a great community at neck of the woods, whether it's karaoke night, open mic, or r&b hip hop night! Just went to karaoke night the other night and Mark was the best host & bartender! The venue is very spacious and has an upstairs and downstairs that host various events. Also shoutout to Andy for giving the best service time and time again!
google avatar

Olga S.

Yelp
Mark & Andy & Jocelyn are the best bartenders ever. I love coming here for karaoke. They r the heart and soul of this place.

Eileen H.

Yelp
I would give this place 6 stars if i could.. my absolute go to spot to grab a drink with my girls! From 90s night on Saturday's to open mic, they really do it all and we never fail to have a fun night. Not just that but their bartenders are such gems...especially Mark & Andy! Not only are they always killin it behind the bar, but also on the mic during their Tuesday karaokes! I cannot recommend this place enough!!

Yelp
White crusty bouncer with long hair, can't keep his hands to himself and seems coked out tbh. Kept making minors feel uncomfortable... steer clear

If I could leave 100 stars, I would. My sister organized my 30th birthday at Neck of the Woods while they were hosting the No Scrubs event. I couldn't have been more pleased with the set up and the service! There was a bit of a mishap and I ended up feeling sick, Jay(sp?) and John were so supportive and helpful. They took good care of me and all of my friends. Truly good people and they made our trip out there so worth it! Thanks guys so much for everything! We'll definitely be returning.
