"Amharic for “honey wine,” tej is an Ethiopian drink that kings, queens, and other royals have enjoyed for thousands of years. Negus Winery and Meadery, at 5509 Vine Street, Alexandria, Virginia, serves that same golden beverage, which Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, were served in Ethiopia while visiting Emperor Haile Selassie I in 1965. Addis Ababa native and Springfield, Virginia-based Gize Negussie makes, bottles, and distributes the royal drink from his facility. The winery and meadery is a tiny operation with just seven people, including Negussie and his wife, Hermela Neguse. Opened in October, the tasting room features semi-sweet and semi-dry honey wine in served in either wine glasses or a large Ethiopian glass drinking vessel called a berele." - Lenore Adkins

Great selection of wines at this small wine shop. I will give a heads up that it is in a hit of an odd location. The inside is super welcoming and bright. There are plenty of seats inside. I got the wine flight and was not disappointed. My favorite was 2021 white blend and the pure authentic honey (owners mom’s recipe). I enjoyed all the wines and would recommend trying. I am more of a red wine connoisseur than a white but I enjoyed the wines. The honey wine is a bit sweet. Perfect for an after dinner drink. Service was great and there are some snacks you can order as well to pair with your wine.I’m

Negus Winery Boutique: A Hidden Gem I recently visited Negus Winery Boutique and was absolutely enchanted by the experience. The decor is stunning—stylish, elegant, and inviting, creating the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing evening. The customer service was impeccable; the staff were attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly. The overall vibe was warm and welcoming, making it a place I’ll definitely return to. Their honey wine was the real highlight for me—absolutely top-notch. Rich, flavorful, and perfectly crafted, it’s a must-try for anyone visiting. Highly recommend checking this spot out if you’re a wine lover or simply looking for a unique and memorable experience. I’ll be back for more!

Wow wow and wow! Driving to Maryland and saw a sign “winery”. I thought hmmm…it’s a rainy day so why not! On the way back we went there ! Location is a little off the main path but perfect! The young lady inside the tasting room explained the wines . Of course we ordered a flight and the charcuterie board (with these awesome Injera chips and Sambusas! The sparking Rose was a subtle surprise of wonderful , their red wine was very good but new world and traditional honey wines were the stars of the day. A few more customers came in and after 3 hours of wine and conversation we all left as friends. Don’t be silly and miss trying this place!

After over a year of talking about visiting, my sister & I finally made our way to Negus Winery. This was not only a first time visiting, for each of us, but also part of my birthday celebration; and, the experience did not disappoint. Negus is a hidden gem kind of spot. Small but positively delightful and intimate. Gīzē has very good customer service skills, and is meticulous in his execution of everything. Not to mention his friendly, welcoming demeanor. We did a full wine tasting, and tried the charcuterie board--which included all their edible options. Their wine selection includes 3 grape wine options & 4 honey wines. There is a wine here for most any preference and palate as the wines range from dry & full-bodied to fruity & sweet. There's even a sparkling rosé. The atmosphere was calm and welcoming during our visit. Though, in peak hours, I imagine the place can get lively. Negus offers indoor seating as well as outdoor seating. The decor is perfect for the location, on both fronts. As a first time visitor, the only negative I took notice of was parking; however, after speaking with Gīzē, he pointed out where best to park. Visiting Negus Winery was a great call, on my sister's part, and a very nice start to my birthday weekend. I left the experience feeling like "I can't wait to return for my next visit". The attention to detail and personal touches during our visit to Negus were "luxe" level. Gīzē truly did make the experience positively memorable. I very highly recommend Negus Winery for anything from date night, to group gatherings; even a solo visit. Well worth the visit, and a great place to simply hangout & enjoy the vibe. 5 stars. Will be visiting again.

This spot is an Ethiopian winery. It’s a great for a chilled, date night (solo or couples). There is also a food van outside the restaurant that has great, tasting Ethiopian food. Highly recommended.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Such a gem! I visited Negus Winery in Alexandria, VA for a monthly catch-up with my girlfriend and we were so impressed. The vibe was warm and welcoming, the customer service was amazing, and the charcuterie board? Chef’s kiss. We did the wine flight and the pours were super generous, which I definitely appreciated. Every sip felt like a celebration. I also love that this winery is Ethiopian-owned. As someone with East African roots, it felt like a taste of home in every way. Highly recommend this place for a chill, elevated experience with culture, class, and good vibes.

We visited Negus Winery for a tasting and had an absolutely wonderful experience! Every wine we tried was fantastic—there truly is something for every palate. The young lady who helped us was warm, welcoming, and made the whole visit feel special. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area and looking for great wine!

Yelp
A hidden gem in ALX. Whether you're having tej for the first time or have had it many times, you're going to enjoy your visit to Negus Winery. They have a great variety of wines (you can try 7 in a tasting), great customer service, and an inviting atmosphere. You can bring your own food/have something ordered to the location. There are board & card games out (and you can bring your own, of course). It is a very family friendly and fun establishment - having delicious wine doesn't hurt either.

Yelp
I recently visited Negus Winery, and it was a bit different from the wineries I'm used to--it's more like an intimate tasting room. It's a small, cozy spot, but be careful when driving there because it's easy to miss, and it's surrounded by auto body shops. The staff here are super friendly and make you feel welcome right away. For $35, you can try a wine flight of seven different wines, which is a great deal. Their signature honey wine is unique, though it wasn't my personal favorite. One thing that really stood out is the vibe--it's a cute, family-run business, which adds to the charm. Bonus: there's an Ethiopian food truck outside, so you can grab a bite while you enjoy your wine! If you're looking for something more casual and different from the typical winery scene, this is worth checking out.

Yelp
I want to say this more of a wine cellar and or wine tasting room. The wines are quite delicious. The honey wine were my favorite. If you are also interested in Ethiopian food, they have an Ethiopian food truck outside that you can order from. It was my first time having Ethiopian food and I was surprisingly Delighted at the flavors. I definitely recommend the spicy beef tips and Injera. This is not a winery that you would need to dress up for. Come relax and comfortable and enjoy yourself.

Yelp
This weekend Negus celebrated their 1 year anniversary! Congratulations to them! This is an Ethiopian winery that specializes in honey wines along with other wines that are made in house. My sisters and I went here to try their wines. I personally wasn't a big fan of the wine because I am a sweet wine drinker. But the ones I did taste from my sisters they were ok. The ones that I thought were sweet really weren't to me but one of my sisters enjoyed it and surprisingly she enjoyed the rose because she's not a rose girl. My other sister liked some of her wines too. The wine flights are $35.00 for 7 with a generous pour which is great too! I will definitely go back because the food looked amazing but we had just came from brunch so I couldn't indulge! I loved the concept and the staff were amazing too. Very attentive to everyone's needs. It's not too big inside but they do have outdoor seating. It smells amazing too.

Jamillah G.

Yelp
Beautiful tranquil, cozy, welcoming environment. Staff are extremely attentive, engaging and helpful. Great wine selection.

Yelp
A great experience without having to drive 30-60 minutes outside the city! Elshi was a phenomenal part of the experience. She was very friendly and provided a wealth of knowledge about the Ethiopian culture behind this winery!

LaShanta H.

Yelp
The customer service is wonderful. The wine is OK. The neighborhood is the pits. It is very casual. If you want to eat there, call before you go to make sure the food truck is there. There is no food inside the building.

Yelp
I may be biased, but as far as I'm concerned anything that combines a bit of culture with hospitality and good wine is definitely 5 stars. I never would have thought that Alexandria needed a honey wine tasting room, but they made me a believer. Ethiopian honey wine - called Tej - is a time-honored tradition in that country. Think of Tej as a cousin of mead; both are honey based alcoholic beverages but made differently. I've had mead before, but never this kind. Apparently, the difference between Tej and 'regular' mead has something to do with the yeast. Don't expect to have crazy mead concoctions like you may find at other meaderies. This is very down-to-basics beverage. The owner explained all of this to me while he made the rounds chatting with other customers. No food except some small snacks (I forgot to ask if you can bring your own) but it's quaint and hospitable. They even use 'a unique serving glass called a 'Berele'. They serve an unfiltered off-dry Tej and a dry version, although I preferred the unfiltered. The only negative is street parking is tough, but once I realized you can park in the lot behind the building, all was well.

Yelp
Adding photos. Truly enjoyed this winery and its friendly staff. The injera crisps were tasty, too.

Yelp
Last night, Jessica with DMV Does arranged for an exclusive private wine tasting at Negus. First, anything Black owned in Northern Virginia is going to get my money! First, the owner provided an overview of the culture and the origin of the wines. The family feel makes the place really authentic and warm. What I loved is that the owner allowed us to bring games and snacks in to enjoy while we connected with each other. Parking is available for free out front or around back. It's a spacious place and very stepped in Ethiopian culture. I bought the red wine and the honey wine. I'll definitely be back for a wine tasting experience.

Yelp
This was my first visit and I'm so glad that I came. The service was great, along with the wine. My friend and I were pleasantly surprised to find out that Tuesdays were discounted. We were the only patrons while we were there, so the staff was very attentive. I also appreciated that they provided local snacks, instead of your usual cheese and crackers. I will definitely be returning.

Yelp
What a fantastic spot just south of the Van Dorn Metro! The wine tasting flight of 7 wines covers a great range, including the Honey Wines that we learned are of great significance in Ethiopian society and culture. My wife and I were fortunate to have Nani and Elshi looking after us as they did all evening. Highly recommend checking the tasting room out.

Maria K.

Yelp
Great experience! My friend and I sat in the tasting room and tried the flight of 7 wines. My absolute favorite was the last honey wine (his mother's recipe). Interior was cozy and not too busy on Tuesday night, they also have 25% off on Tuesdays! Service was very friendly, would definitely come back again.

Aimee B.

Yelp
What a cool place, so unique and their Mama's Honey wine is delicious. Their tasting room is very simple but go for the wine and to support local business! The hard working owner and his wife are lovely- very friendly and interesting. They don't serve food but have injera crisps available for sale. Check out this little gem of a place!

Chandler D.

Yelp
This is a new winery located in Alexandria, Virginia. They specialize in Ethiopian Wine. If you choose to do a flight of their wine, they pour seven wines for you to try. It is $35/person for a tasting. If you wish to have a glass it is $10 a glass. The wine is very good and they are very informative of the wine they serve. This location is a small store front. I will say that the price for a tasting is on the higher end when comparing to wine tastings at wineries from the surrounding area.

Jesse B.

Yelp
Very nice tasting room with delicious wines. The honey wine is absolutely amazing!! Snacks and samosas were delicious as well!! Highly recommended!

Zarin B.

Yelp
Delicious delicious wine tasting!!! On Tuesday it's 25% off too. Got a whole flight of 7 wines and really enjoyed trying each of them (red, white, rose, and four honey wines). They do weekend tours for groups of 8+ as well, which I would love to try sometime. Highly recommend coming out to try some good wine :)

Melissa D.

Yelp
beautiful wine! lovely staff! A tasting here is time well spent. Met the owner and he was a wonderful person. "Mama" is his mother from Ethiopia and the honey wines come from her tradition. Didn't meet her, but I'd love to hear her stories!

Johanna C.

Yelp
The wine was a total experience, very good wine and friendly service. Would definitely come back.

Cindy C.

Yelp
This review is not for the establishment. This review is for the clown in the green sweater that Annette happened to catch in her photo. At first I thought it was a Bigfoot sighting but I wouldn't degrade Sasquatch like that, Sasquatch has more class and dignity. Let's just say that clown in the green shirt is a negative star, poor service, does not meet expectations and do not recommend.

Yelp
On Thursday 4/18 I finally had the opportunity to check out Negus Winery and Meadery. Although it's tucked away in an industrial area, the small outdoor seating was comfortable, cute, and very welcoming, as was the tasting room. My companion and I each had the $35 flight of 7 wines (3 grape, 4 honey). All of them were a generous pour and their flavor profiles provided a nice variety. We had the pleasure of being hosted by Solena (I hope I'm spelling it correctly). She was great; she told us about the wines and even helped us pick out an Injera snack. She gave us fair warning on the spice/heat level, so we went with the mild option and we were glad we did (it had the perfect amount of heat and flavor). Great for a date night, girls night, or even solo with a book. Highly recommended

Danielle H.

Yelp
Best wine ever!!!! My friends and I tasted their wine at a wedding party and instantly we knew we needed to explore more. When we entered the winery we were greeted with smiles and a warm exchange which began our experience. We had the wine flights, they were chilled to perfection and we really enjoyed each one. The winery was clean, service was hospitable and prompt. It was a great Saturday afternoon experience.

Dan G.

Yelp
This is a one of a kind spot The traditional Tej is made with a lot of care and cleanliness so when I see commercial makers that's what I look for. And Negussie did not disappoint. The cleanliness is evident in the taste.

HUeducator2011 ..

Yelp
Everything from the hospitality/service to the different wines were amazing! Once we walked in we were warmly greeted by the owner. The wines were tasty and unlike wines I've had at other nova wineries. The decor was as beautiful and honored Ethiopian culture. I will be back !

Fernando A.

Yelp
Wonderful wine and snacks! The Injera Crisps are really unique. The owner is also super nice.

David B.

Yelp
Very pleased with my visit to Negus Winery. Though it is located in a rather industrial neighborhood, the ambience inside is very calm and inviting. They offer a flight of seven generous pours for $35, which was more than enough for my girlfriend and I to share. Additionally, the owner and vintner came to talk with us and he was very knowledgeable, charming and passionate about his work. Come check out this hidden gem located right off Van Dorn!

Afi E.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. Using an ancient Ethiopian Tej (Mead) recipe, they have different delightful varieties of semi-dry and semi-sweet high quality Tej that you can try. Mama's honey wine is one of my personal favorites. It's not overwhelmingly sweet but has a perfect balance of being sweet, with a crisp and delicate finish. Nonetheless, you can't go wrong with other varieties because of the quality ingredients and craftsmanship. The owner was very attentive and graciously explained and recommended different varieties. We served some of Negus's honey wines during our holiday parties and they were a big hit. I highly recommend them for the occasional glass of wine with friends/family at the tasting room, for dinner at home, or for events.

Seth P.

Yelp
Delicious wine! Highly recommend the tasting and tour. Will definitely be coming back.
