Neptune

Seafood is your reason for coming to Neptune, a new restaurant inside the refurbished Principal hotel in Russell Square. Everyone orders the seafood platter and it’s easy to see why - very fresh, no fillers and quite creative. Friendly servers make sure that your dietary needs are met. Much care has been given to the interior design - it’s bold, cheeky and just the right amount of kitsch.

We stayed at the hotel and enjoyed breakfast / brunch and dinner there. The staff is absolutely dedicated and I could only thank them again for taking care of us ! Food is really good but yes I would say a bit pricey. The place is also super nice, cosy and feels warm.

My girlfriend and I had dinner there and we liked it so much we returned for brunch. The brunch was particularly great, with excellent food and in a stunning unique setting. The team went above and beyond to take care of us (Adam did great and Jonathan gave us the best welcome we’ve ever had in London). Highly recommend to anyone looking for great food and a great environment.

Had a good time overall. Stylish decor, nice ambience, friendly and professional staff. The hotel decor as a whole - so not related to restaurant - can be discombobulating at times as you get totally different decorations, themes and sounds as you move into different rooms (something I discovered while navigating the hotel to get to the toilets). We had seafood platter, sour bread with seaweed butter, chips and virgin cocktails. With service charge it amounted to £31.50 each which was okay. Seafood was good but not mindblowing; fun place to go to overall.

I came here with my girlfriend for their soft launch - as such I'll keep my comments more to the food than to the service. First, the interior has been beautifully redecorated. The color palette was a bit flat for my taste, but the restaurant and bar area are both very stylish and pretty. The dinner started off well with what would end up being the stars of the show: the starters. We had the cuttlefish takoyaki and crayfish agnolotti. Both of these dishes were excellent - full of flavor and good pieces of seafood, and well presented and served. I could have made a full meal out of more of these - they were that good. We followed up with a seafood platter, which was just average. The oysters were delightfully large, but the garnish lacked kick. The langoustines were excellent. The mussels and tuna tartare were average, and the mackerel was wholly uninspired. We finished up with the crab tagliolini which was pretty disappointing. The pasta was a bit overcooked, but more importantly the sauce was oversalted and very watery. The crab lacked texture and the flavor was overpowered completely by the tomato and basil. Overall, Neptune has several improvements to make in the menu before justifying the price point.

I so wanted this to be usable at least. However, I knew I was headed towards dire straights when the server knew almost nothing about how various dishes were prepared. Their ingredients or even whether it was pasta or cheese. I let that go cuz I was in a positive mood and she had a nice smile. I got a good glass of a simple white and figured I'd try several things hoping to land something good. The oysters were good and fresh and gave me some optimism. However the sardines were flavorless and odd. The sea bass crudo was also flavorless and gristly. The monkfish was cooked perfectly but had minimal flavor, and I assumed it wasn't fresh. All in all, nice staff but not educated in the food they serve. Mediocre food (at best) lacking oversight by the executive chef (if there is one). My instinct was to get the steak and I was probably correct in that assumption. It is a lovely environment and I do hope they sort it out.

This once beautiful restaurant has been ruined by corporate mediocrity. If you have any interest in design or architecture avoid this place at all costs. We were staying at the hotel and arrived a bit late so we decided to have a small meal at the Neptune before bed. Bad idea. The restaurant was almost empty yet we were seated right next to the kitchen doors against the wall with no view of outside or of the restaurant. The wait staff were too busy talking to one another to take our order but finally after about 20 minutes came around to us. We ordered the terrine and the burrada. The food was fairly good but the absolute horror of the 1970's remodel of a classic restaurant ruined our meal. Tinted mirrors and half dead plants abound. It's just awful. What a waste!!!

Recently opened this place is beautiful with fresh decor, flavorful food and friendly service.

Simply don't go there. Looking for a decent restaurant for Christmas lunch, I was desperate and tried it. To start, the waitress threw the three glasses of champagne on me, shit happens, ok but no excuses, nothing. We got another table with the air from the heater blowing on our back, very nice. The food was a total joke, 80£ pp for a Christmas lunch, starter was prawns with letuce ? Kind of Caesar salad with prawn ok.. no state, then one of us order cannelloni with truffle (we are still searching for the Truffle), man this was like the gratin you prepare for your family quick and easy but doesn't make it on a Christmas Day on a 80£ special lunch! The desert was as bad, I'll not describe imaging the worst tart ever, and you have the whole picture of this lunch! It cost me 489 £ for three adults and 2 kids. Just don't go there!!!

I had lunch at Neptune with a colleague today. It is a beautifully decorated restaurant and the menu is quite appealing. We both had starters- I had the burrata/tomato salad (which was divine!) and he has the langoustines which he enjoyed. Both of our mains were very nicely plated-- I had the chicken. Unfortunately, the chicken was not cooked all the way through and was raw in the very middle. Given that we were pressed for time, I just ate what I could and when the waiter took my plate I explained. She went away and then another waiter, who seem to have more stature perhaps, came back to tell me, in a rather rude way, that he had in fact spoken to the chef and the chef said that he had checked the chicken with a thermometer and it was the with temperature. I said, well that is fine but it was raw, take a look. I then said, we don't have time, so may we have the bill which was met with attitude. This restaurant really needs to work on it's service. I am the customer! You don't argue with the customer. I hope they can make some changes and get it together because the food it quite good.

We had an awful experience. Our server was nice at first. My daughter and I ordered the Porkchop and the Sirloin, both of which cost around £24 (London). The sirloin was decent but the Porkchop was AWFUL. It came sliced and the first 3 slices were completely just FAT. The other slices were surrounded by very THICK layers of fat (75% of each small slice). You were lucky to get one bite of meat out if each slice. I had to share my sirloin with my daughter who was famished after walking around London for hours. I felt I had to say something to the server. She talked to the chef and she said the way the animal is fed causes this to be a very fatty cut of meat. She then proceeded to hand me the £70 bill. Very disappointed in this restaurant.
