Cafe Racer Plans New Capitol Hill Location for September After Closing Its U District Space | Eater Seattle

The Neptune Theater in Seattle Will Host Full Capacity Shows Starting July 10 | Eater Seattle

"I’m encouraged that the Neptune Theater in the U District will reopen at full capacity for a series of performances this summer, starting July 10 — the largest concert venue in Seattle to make such a move — which could help bring more business to surrounding bars and restaurants. When it reopens, attendees must wear face masks when not eating or drinking; anyone 16 and older must show proof of being fully vaccinated; attendees ages 2–15 are required to show a negative COVID test within 72 hours of the show; food and beverage transactions will be cashless; and the Neptune’s bar will operate under King County health department social distancing guidelines for food establishments. The nonprofit that runs the theater, Seattle Theater Group, has applied for federal Save Our Stages funding and expects to hear back within a few weeks, and STG plans to make more announcements about upcoming concerts soon." - Gabe Guarente

It's a fun quirky setting but has folding chair seating. I like the architecture but it was awkward sitting shoulder to shoulder with strangers. There's a little bar on the lower level and they set up a coffee cart style tiny bar upstairs. Drinks are airport prices: $18.50 for a small Titos and Sprite. They kept the outer doors wide open on the bathrooms, which was awful; do you really need to hear people pee while you wait to order a drink?

Leonette H.

Google
I've been here twice and the building is beautiful. Very well maintained. The chairs are the fold up kind with a little cushion. But there's not a bad view in any seat. Great sound system. The parking in that area is horrible. So go early to find parking.

Google
Went to a comedy show. The theatre was really nice and organized. It's a little old with some weird areas in the floors, but looks nice. Staff was helpful and the bar area was better than most comedy clubs.

Google
The. Neptune is a fantastic venue for musical or speaking engagements, with clear audio and sight lines. Only downside is the admittedly common high prices for beverages. $15 for 2 16oz cans of Pepsi should be criminal. Despite that The Neptune is my favorite Seattle venue for shows.

Grace

Google
I come to this theater often to watch stand-up comedy, and I’ve always had a good experience. It’s a small, older venue with a lot of charm and character. The intimate setting makes the shows feel more personal and engaging. So far, everything has been great—I really enjoy coming here!

Seth S.

Google
Very cool venue, fun Neptune themed stained glass and architecture. Located near many good restaurants, mostly Asian. Lighting and sound mixing was good when I saw the Mountain Goats. It felt cozy as far as concert venues go. Earplugs and snacks were available for purchase and there was a small free water station up by the merchandise. I am not 21 so I cannot comment on the bar. The only reason this review is 4 stars is because the coat check charged 2 dollars cash which not everyone has on them these days, but maybe that's on me. I had 1 dollar and a kind soul gave me another. Just remember to bring small bills.

Nathan O.

Google
What a great time! The floors in this old theater are definitely "vintage" (crazy-weird slopes) but it's a great place to see live music! The Cat Empire were as amazing as I'd hoped, and Bermuda Search Party were a surprise win!!

Quanrailius Pringleton W.

Google
Amazing venue. Saw Symphony X here recently (very fitting venue) and the sound was great and overall just a really unique and great experience here.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL OLD MOVIE PALACE. Now a great venue for concerts and plays. I saw Hot Tuna there last night and loved the acoustics and the intimate size of the venue. Constructed in 1921 as a movie palace the venue is equipped with a full stage designed for "floor shows". There is also a full backstage area and of course dressing rooms. The 1912 pipe organ looks to me like it has been removed but the large sound grills are still there and backlit for effect. The stage has been expanded to cover what was once an orchestra or organ pit. The orchestra rake and seats have been removed to allow use as a dance floor or other configuration. The original seats with their art deco gesso can still be found in the balcony. One of the best features though are the large stained glass murals on the orchestra level featuring themed backlit scenes of Neptune and the like. Don't miss an opportunity attend an event here. There are not many of these old movie palaces left standing. If you would like to see one that is fully restored however, and you are in the LA area, The El Capitan theater on Hollywood Blvd is a must see example of this type of theater. Excelsior!

Yelp
Do not go to the bar the have super expensive watered down drinks! My boyfriend and I went to see Lucas Zelnick. He was AMAZING. we sat in the back of the front seating and had good visibility. The chairs are super small and really close though. Now the bar. My boyfriend and I ordered 2 doubles. I got a double vodka soda with a splash of cranberry juice. My boyfriend got a double captain and sprite. Our drinks tasted very watered down and weird. Mine had 0 carbonation and neither of ours tasted like any alcohol. Our 2 drinks cost $71!!!! $71 for two basic drinks that took less than 2 minutes is highway robbery. Will not be returning.

Owen H.

Yelp
I loved the show, but we went to the bar to get two drinks. We got two double drinks, a vodka and 7, and a captain and 7. The bill was 72 dollars for two of the worst drinks. The alcohol seemed watered down, and they didn't even use 7up or sprite, they used club soda that didn't even have carbonation. Basically if you go to Neptune, don't bother going to the bar.

Yelp
Went to see one of my favorite bands. It was my first time at the Neptune. What a beautiful venue. Love the "stained glass" indoors and the Neptune heads up above. Very detailed and neat. There are seats above and standing below. Had no idea where the merch was sold. The only thing that sucks is parking and the ridiculous amount of college kids but can't help that since you're in the U-District. I'd come back for another show now that I know where to park.

Yelp
Came here for the first time to see the ABBA tribute, and while the space is great in terms of seating, the floors are incredibly uneven--I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been addressed. I tripped and almost fell three times, and I was completely sober! I can't imagine how people manage after drinking (since they do serve alcohol). The floors have random bumps and dips, and the color makes it really hard to see where they are. It's not just one area; the entire venue has uneven floors. Additionally, like others have mentioned, sitting in the back is incredibly hot. I was sweating uncontrollably just an hour into the show, which made it really uncomfortable. The parking isn't great either since it's the u-district but we went on a Sunday so at least it was free.

Yelp
This is probably one of my favorite music venues in the Seattle area! I've been here a few times and it's always been a great time. A lot of venues in Seattle that are meant for smaller touring bands and don't have a ton of seating and end up being standing room only, which I've discovered that since I'm no longer in my 20s, I HATE. We like to get here early so that we can get a front row seat in the balcony area which is cozy and gives you a great view of the stage. The seating is definitely older and not super fancy, but it does the job and is a lot better than standing. Another bonus of getting here early is getting to look around at all the fun architecture and additions around the theater. Rest of the venue is pretty standard. The bathrooms are nothing fancy but they are clean. I always tend to try and go in the middle of a song because there's only a few stalls so the lines get looong. Bar service here has always been great, too. Overall this is a great venue and we're always stoked to see some of our favorite bands end up playing here when passing through Seattle.

Yelp
How refreshing attending a concert in a small venue. The bar was flowing. People were friendly. And the popcorn smelled great. Sound system could be improved, but hey- Neptune is a Seattle classic. Enjoy!
google avatar

Cristina G.

Yelp
Paid almost $250 a ticket to watch a cover band play and couldn't figure out why we paid so much to come to the theater. Theodore was kind of dirty and dated the crowd was good and the music was great. It reminded me a lot of the theater in Everett that has similar cover bands and wasn't as nice as for example, Snoqualmie. Not sure I would pay several hundred dollars a ticket times 3 again to see a show here! Employees were really nice and professional. Please bring cash and tip the bartenders in cash, I know they appreciate it!
google avatar

Jesse G.

Yelp
The best place to see music in Seattle. Every seat is a good seat - I particularly like the balcony for views and acoustics. They book great bands - I've seen everyone from Sinead O'Connor to the Magnetic Fields. Drinks are reasonable, and they sell popcorn just like when it was a movie theatre!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I went to see Jeezy at this venue and had an amazing time. The bartenders make some strong drinks and the people running the doors and the other checkpoints were pretty friendly. I appreciate that they have a standing room only space and a balcony area with seats, all of which are first come first serve. The ladies bathroom is a bit difficult to navigate because it's so small and the layout is weird but hey, it's a bathroom. The flooring upstairs is uneven and can be dangerous if you don't pay attention to it. The only complaint I have is that the seats are small and really close together. You get more seat and leg room on a plane. The sound was really good but the fog machine was a bit much and caused my throat to hurt. There's no ventilation so once it's in there, it's in there.
google avatar

Kurt P.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years and frankly it's not the greatest theatre. It's run down and the seats are tight. They bring some good acts in so credit where credit is due and I love the glowing eyes of the Neptunes around the theater.
google avatar

Yelp
If you haven't seen beautiful stained glass, you have to go here. It is great and it has beautiful music. It has a great atmosphere and wonderful employees great parking and a wonderful place to go so if you're visiting Seattle, one of the places that you have to go Neptune theater.

Alexis G.

Yelp
Made the mistake of coming back here with friends for a show. Same crap. Just solely based on the security at this place, they have no business being a music venue. They must have Daddy issues. The acoustics suck as well. Pretty much the worst few shows I've ever attended in Seattle. Gross. This city offers so much better.
google avatar

Will L.

Yelp
Per a comment related to this review, my review was a little harsh (since the problem was less an issue with the theater than it was about Ticketmaster). I've updated the review to reflect that. However, the issues I had are still relevant.

Yelp
We went to the Neptune Theatre to see Margaret Cho. The location is easy to find, but parking was a little difficult. It's located in the University of Washington area and in walking distance of several eateries. As long as I have lived in Seattle, I had never been here. It's an older theater, but rather than old, I rather like to say it's classic. it's very clean and the staff is very friendly. Even the security people were very nice and friendly. The bathrooms were clean and upkept. We were hungry but went to the show first because we wanted to make sure that we didn't miss the show. Luckily, they have a snackbar with popcorn and candy. We got some sodas and popcorn and candy. My husband went to the bar for a drink and he said that it had a pretty good selection of alcohol there. I think the next time we go there I may get an "adult beverage" instead of a soda. We had seats in the front row balcony and we had a great view of the stage. I would definitely try to get seats there again. We all had a great time there and I would totally go back there again to see another show.
google avatar

Christopher L.

Yelp
A fantastic theater next to the U-District light rail! All of the staff are very friendly and the venue is clean. There are a variety of snacks (the popcorn is delicious) and bar service with several options. As far as the seats, it's a tight squeeze but not too bad and fairly comfortable. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house as it is well planned out. Can't wait to go back and see more shows!!
google avatar

Yelp
An interesting 100 year old venue. The ramp to the balcony seats from the upstairs lobby area is incredibly steep and on brand with the hills of Seattle. We saw a comedy show. The sight lines and sound in the orchestra seats was fine. The glowing eyes in the ceiling gargoyles make a visit worthwhile.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Awesome place. The lineups are amazing and the atmosphere is communal and intimate. Highly recommend

Jay W.

Yelp
This is a very cool space with horrible acoustics. The worst in Seattle by far for a venue of this caliber. I've seen 3 rock shows there in the last few years and all sounded terrible. It's not the PA or the guy running the sound, it's the room. You can't just put a PA in a big empty space and call it a venue. You have to do acoustic treatment as well. Fix your acoustics or stop booking rock shows.
google avatar

Felise F.

Yelp
Small intimate theater. I saw Michelle Wolf there. I like that there's a bar in the theater. I don't like how close the seats are to each other. Very squished.

SeriouslySeattlite

Yelp
First timer (here for The Dear Hunter) and this spot is seriously the sweetest. Friendly security and bartenders, cozy -- smells like popcorn everywhere. Acoustics were great and it felt like a full house but the place wasn't over crowded. My girl's in a wheelchair because she just had foot surgery. Guys at the doors let her skip around the metal detectors. But... Shoutout I want to give though is to Michelle... She caught us struggling up the steepest ramp up front and walked us to an easier bathroom. Then later caught us AGAIN in the middle of the crowd to show us to an easier spot to see over the standing crowd. Brought me a chair too. We came in anticipating the struggles gettin around that my girlfriend has gotten used to since her surgery, and left feeling like VIPs.
google avatar

Keith L.

Yelp
Neptune canceled "An Evening with Bebel Gilberto" and has not yet offered refunds. TicketMaster won't give me my refund because it says Neptune hasn't allowed refunds yet. This is bad customer service.

Paul J.

Yelp
Bar staff was professional, the guy working the "ID verification process" was a complete jerk. We get it you have a very, minor specific power, buddy. I'm 52, by the way trying to refill my 18 yo sons coke. Take it easy, pal! He was no where to be found on the first round... Happy Easter and rock on Queensryche!
google avatar

Phil G.

Yelp
We went to see and absorb Doug Stanhope at the Neptune during one of our last nights in Seattle. While the drinks were Seattle expensive, $28 for two drinks, the theater was small enough to enjoy the show. Toilets were gender fluid, but there were stalls, so who gives a rip.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
The Neptune is a beautiful venue! Great spot for concerts if you're short cause there's lots of areas to view. Beautiful old space. Still required masks as of may 2022 but that's okay! Felt safe and super clean. I liked the all gender bathrooms and bar options.

Kristen D.

Yelp
I would give 0 stars if I could. The place has a cute, old charm to it, but that has been ruined by modernity. The restrooms are gender neutral. No man wants a woman walking in on him using the urinal. No woman wants to pee next to a man taking a dump. This goes beyond the trans issue, as nobody knows what to do since the restrooms are "all gender". My husband overheard men complaining about this in the restroom. The restrooms with urinals were mostly men with women walking in and awkwardly leaving. The ones without urinals still had men just using the stalls. There is NO safe space for women there.
google avatar

Gary L.

Yelp
Medium-size theatre, so the feeling is still intimate. Seating is adequate and portable seats are used for expanded audiences. One or two bars for refreshments. Attractive decor and lighting in the main room.
google avatar

Yuchen Z.

Yelp
Came here to watch Andrew McMahon's Three Piano Tour here!! It felt nice and intimate- the perfect little theater for a group of adoring fans. Standing room on the 1st floor for this concert and then built in seats on the top floor. I loved my view from the raised platform!!! Even a short person like me could see!

P K.

Yelp
Feel the live music at this venue where the performance is close and personal. Conveniently located next to the U District Link station.
google avatar

Sheri H.

Yelp
The Neptune is OLD and really needs a paint job, inside and out, along with a massive deep cleaning but the acoustics are great and there isn't a bad seat in the house. Staff were all phenomenal and beyond patient at the doors and bars, including security. If you're walking up/down from the balcony seats, watch out for the steep incline like a hill in downtown Seattle.
google avatar

Mae D.

Yelp
So, I liked this better when it was a movie theater. It's not bad for live shows but it was frustrating because our tickets just said GA, no particular row or seat. It was a bit like a movie theater but people coming in and out, was super distracting when people are standing and looking for seats their group can all sit in etc... other than that I had a great time due to the performers. Still wish it was a movie theater. Still has the beautiful art like the paintings/stain glass art (that's how it looked from the 2nd floor anyway and the beautiful light fixture on the ceiling. I'd come back here again for a show. Going to come earlier so I can sit up front and not get distracted.
google avatar

Zac S.

Yelp
Cool, historic theater but the experience is tainted by the gender neutral bathrooms. It's incredibly uncomfortable to have a group of women walk in while you're taking a leak in the urinal. Liberal Seattle has lost its mind.
google avatar

M. Lynn G.

Yelp
Great venue to see a show or concert. Not a bad seat in the place... Highly recommend seeing JR D Guzman... Great show...

Siracha N.

Yelp
The venue is great, the acoustics are pretty good; but I really did not appreciate the rudeness of the staff. Not only were the incredibly pushy and impatient with guests, but they were quick to kick anyone out instead of supplying a couple warnings for small instances. It made the show unenjoyable and overall, a waste of money.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Not the best venue I've been to. I attended the Jay & Silent Bob Reboot Roadshow here. My friend and I took an Uber, and as we arrived, one of the first things I noticed was there was nowhere to park. I was glad we chose ride share. The line to get in wasn't bad and it moved quick. Once we got inside, it was apparent just how old the place is. I've been to old theaters in other cities that are much nicer. This one could use some renovations. We got to our seats, which were 6 rows from the stage, and I was disappointed again. The chairs were skinny and had almost no padding, so not only were they uncomfortable, but with a capacity crowd, we were packed in like sardines. The show started with Kevin Smith coming out for about 15 minutes and talking about the movie we were about to watch. He was entertaining as always and provided a few laughs. The movie itself was your typical Kevin Smith flick. When the movie ended, Kevin and Jason Mewes came out for a Q&A. This was the main reason I came and was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, after answering a few questions from the audience, Kevin informed us that he was being told to wrap it up. I know from reading online that in other cities, his Q&A lasted a couple hours, yet here they cut him short. I felt ripped off. Makes me not want to return to this venue for other events.
google avatar

Maddy V.

Yelp
Everything was perfect and it's a beautiful venue. We got front row at the concert we went to see and the security there made everyone feel very safe. This is one for the books
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Came here to see Jay & Silent Bob Reboot Roadshow. The venue was smaller than I expected. The chairs that they gave us were kind of crammed in close and were slightly uncomfortable. They had the event well organized for the two separate lines. I was disappointed that they didn't give Kevin Smith longer to talk during his Q & A. This place is located near a great hamburger place. I'll definitely return if there is another worthy show to see.
google avatar

Kathy L.

Yelp
I love this Vintage beauty. Great lines of sight and a little something for everyone. Yes all gender bathrooms but very private. The staff were really great and accommodating. I will be back!!

Amber M.

Yelp
We'll be back. It was a charming older venue. Intimate. Had a great time. Great date night spot.
google avatar

Mateo G.

Yelp
Super dope music venue. Seattle is pretty great with their music venues. This does not fall short on that end.
google avatar

Marina f.

Yelp
If you want to go to a rundown theatre where the headliner (in our case: Morgan Wade) could not have acted more pissed off for having to perform there, and it's about 120 degrees inside, and if you have a minor female child who's only choice of bathroom is a multi-gender one where men are using urinals out in the open - then THIS is the place for you. This was probably hands-down one of the worst overall experiences I've ever had at a theatre downtown. (No wonder Morgan was so angry - don't really blame her.)
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
This is a great venue next to the state college campus. No official parking lot, but easy walking and uber access. I loved the atmosphere and the old architecture. The acoustics sounded great. Decently priced drinks and good security. I felt safe. General admission is easy access to the floor level or upstairs with Mosh pits in the front . I had a great experience watching Jesus Lizard!
google avatar

Xichen J.

Yelp
I really enjoyed going to this theater, which is located on NE 45th St, close to the intersection of University Ave. Be sure to arrive early since street parking is often difficult to find. Although the theater may be past its heyday, it is still very comfortable inside. Many celebrities grace this place every year for different shows. The theater offers bi-level seating, so the place can actually hold more people than it first appears. One of the benefits of this seating arrangement is that every seat in the house offers an above-average view of the stage.

Janet Y.

Yelp
We went to see X last night . Opening for them was Skating Polly. We sat in the balcony for the beginning of the concert and moved to the floor for the second half. The theatre is old, funky, and charming. The acoustics though, are some of the worst I've encountered in many years. I've seen X perform five times. They are the best. I forgive Neptune, but next time I hope that X plays another venue.

Jake R.

Yelp
Asked the bar tender to stuff an lime slice into my blue moon and they said "Okay" 10/10

Yelp
What can I say...SO MANY MEMORIES HERE! If you are a UW alum, I can almost guarantee you have the same sentiments. Since it's iconic conversion from theater to music venue in 2011, this intimate and down right special place has been graced by some of the best talent there is. I have seen a wide range of shows here...RL Grime, Petit Biscuit, Boys Noize, Matt & Kim, Zeds Dead, Shabazz Palaces, Rufus Du Sol, Sam Lachow, ASAP Ferg just to name the ones of the top of my head. Each experience has been some of my most favorite and always makes me question if going to a show at Showbox is even worth it (rarely it is not). The staff here know what they're doing and don't police you...they just want every one to be safe. I am also particularly fond of the bar area that truly prioritizes viewing and leave the pit area for the younger spring chickens who like to get a little more rowdy. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've felt like my life was complete watching a show from up in the balcony either. This place has been an absolute staple with me throughout my college days and I still look forward to coming to shows here. If you get the chance, you should too!

Yelp
This is to share a very disappointing concert experience my wife and I had last night at Neptune theater. The show (The Wallflowers) was scheduled to begin at 8:00pm. We have been advised by the venue to arrive early, therefore, we were present at the venue by 7:30pm. Our tickets were in the bar area which also got extremely crowded, in addition, the huge black curtain was blocking a stage view right in front of us. Due to the bar area being overcrowded, we had no space to move so that we could have a good/ok shot a the stage. We waited at our spots patiently, standing for more than an hour before the show began, only to find out how bad the sound quality is. Vocals were barely understandable and there was also an overwhelming hum during the performance, affecting the sound clarity of other instruments and the whole band. Not to mention, there were no apologies made for the delay by the artist or the venue whatsoever. We had to leave the venue by the 4th song as our view was almost completely blocked plus the poor sound quality was extremely frustrating. We totally regret the money we paid for these overpriced tickets which was a ripoff! This was with no doubt one of the most disappointing concert/entertainment experience we had so far and it's a shame to see one of our favorite venues to lower its standards and quality to this extent.

Drew S.

Yelp
These clowns have the worst customer experience of any venue in Seattle. Signs say no reentry unless they scan your ticket out and in. I'm cool with that. The problem is that they won't scan you out until after the headliner starts and that policy is written nowhere. So if you, like me, went in at doors to grab merch and avoid the line, you can't run it back to the car while you wait for bands to start. You have to hold an armload of records for two hours while people bump into you. The car run then happens after the band you paid $65 to see starts. Never again. It ruined the night, and like most shows, no refunds. What a mess. Don't come here.

Yelp
I've been to two shows there, and both had the same pros and cons. (But one major pro, so it makes up for some of the cons.) Pros: The vintageness of the whole experience, right down to the kitschy Neptune statues with glowing eyes. The ability to stand on the floor or sit in the balcony is really nice, and the ability to make the decision when you get there, as opposed to when you buy the ticket, is extra nice. The size of the venue is not too large, and it's not too small. Major pro: Once we went up to the box office when a show we wanted to see was sold out just to double check, and it turned out they had some extra tickets that people had bought and didn't want - and they gave them to us for free! I don't know how often this happens or why, but it saved the night and leaves a special place in my heart for the venue. Cons: The sound quality is terrible. Both shows struggled with sound quality, and the last one was so muffled that it was hard to understand anything. The vintageness also falls in here, but in the sense that it is kind of falling apart. I hesitate to think about what that place looks like with the lights up full.
