8 London Restaurants Every Visitor Should Try - AFAR

"An idyllic bistro and bar launched in 2023 that balances cozy, Scandi–influenced midcentury interiors with art-deco and contemporary touches, it prioritizes plant-forward options alongside comforting classics. Under executive chef Tom Cenci the playful menu features items such as “Not Avocado on Toast” (crushed broad beans, chili and herbs) and a refined chicken cordon bleu with monk’s beard, grilled celery and green olives; brunch and hangover cures are a focus too, exemplified by the Randy Hiball cocktail and quality single-origin coffee." - Dan Koday

In November, during a visit to London, we made a last-minute reservation on a Tuesday evening and were seated within twenty minutes. A promising start. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed: our coats were neatly taken, we were graciously guided to our table. These first details immediately set a tone of quiet elegance and genuine hospitality. The host’s recommendations were honest and well-judged, which we greatly appreciated. We came in search of authentic British cooking and were not disappointed. The Aged Beef Rump Tartare with charred seeded loaf and confit egg was utterly divine. The Beetroot & Fig Salad was beautifully balanced, earthy, fresh, and deeply appealing, while the Fennel Citrus Salad was so good it has since become a dish I recreate at home. The Roast Rump of West Country Lamb was outstanding: tender, flavoursome, and perfectly cooked. The only dish that failed to impress was the Celeriac Carbonara, which unfortunately tasted slightly chemical and lacked the warmth present elsewhere on the menu. Dessert, however, was a triumph. The Cherry Bakewell, with almond frosting and caramelised pecans, was simply irresistible.. comforting, refined, and worth waking up for! A thoughtful birthday candle added a personal touch, and the cocktails.. especially the grapefruit, were superb. A memorable dining experience defined by thoughtful service, respect for tradition, and food prepared with confidence and care!

Had a mixed experience when I came here with a friend last Tuesday. The Front of House greeted us warmly and the restaurant was beautiful and cosy - perfect for a winter's evening. The starters we ordered were terrific, the croquettes were wonderfully moorish and a beautiful contrast between soft and crispy. The beetroot salad was a delicious combination of flavours fromightness of the figs and squash to the creamy sheep's cheese. So we were looking forward to the mains which unfortunately were a different level. I had ordered the smoked salmon tartare for a light dinner whilst my friend ordered the chicken large plate. The smoked salmon tartare was okay, but the chicken was overcooked and tough. The flavour profiles of either dish were nothing to write home about. I was also unimpressed with the waiting staff in the back room. The woman dressed in a suit (possibly a manager?) was very much on it, however the younger male wait staff were incredibly hard to get hold of and despite trying to catch our waiter, or any waiter's eye for quite some time to get the bill, eventually I just had to get up and grab someone. I can see why it would be a highly rated place, but our experience left us a little disappointed as we had been looking forward to trying it out.

We came for Sunday brunch. Service was great! Food was mediocre. Eggs were inconsistent. One guest had eggs over cooked and the other one had eggs slightly less over done. It could be that they don’t do runny eggs with their Benedict’s here and you may need to ask for it? You had to ask for ketchup, maple syrup etc as it’s not offered to you. The muffin was hard and chewy if you like it that way. French toast was good. From the reviews, we expected brekky to be better. Sounds like dinner is the best way to go here. I’d be keen to try next time, as I’m not ready to write off Nessa just yet!

Soho Nessa has become my safe spot every time I come to London. I’ve been there for both brunch and dinner, often on my own, and I always feel completely comfortable. The food is delicious and made entirely from scratch, with great-quality ingredients you can really taste. The atmosphere is warm and beautifully designed, which makes the whole experience even better. I’ll definitely be coming back, as always.

@nessasoho offers modern British plates, perfect for sharing with friends and family. The venue exudes a sophisticated vibe with clean interiors and warm lighting, ideal for a dinner ambiance. The food is inventive enough to spark curiosity, with the signature CELERIAC carbonara (yes, vegetable instead of pasta!) standing out as the star. Other personal favorites include the pumpkin ravioli and beer-brined chicken. Desserts might be a pass, but the cocktail list is worth exploring—if you prefer less sweetness, opt for the Lost Goodbye. Service is solid, with the team making up for a few delays from the kitchen. Thanks Eunice for fantastic attentive service and for the advice on the menu. For a group of four, four small plates and three mains suffice. Our bill was £72 each including two cocktails.

Great restaurant, dealt with minor issues very well. Fab cocktails. Suitable for groups and also intimate seating for two is available. Really enjoyed that we were able to relax and discuss/enjoy the food and not feel rushed like many places in London. Will be going again soon! Seasoned staff that know what they are doing and made our party very comfortable.

Went for brunch with friends. Interior was cosy and it was nice to see the chefs in the front of the dining area. Standout dish was the banana French toast with pecan - would come back just for that dish. However the area leading towards the bathroom had an extremely strong smell of fish, and did ruin the experience a bit at the end of the meal.

Service was impeccable, wish I got the name of our lovely server, she was very well informed about the brunch menu & very accommodating, there were many items on the menu with alcohol. The matcha was quite terrible wouldn’t recommend however, all in all really enjoyed the food, my friend ordered the coffee and had no qualms- would definitely recommend the french toast and buttermilk pancakes.
