Well, the story is a bit longer than that. We took a trip to Mexico over Christmas/New Year. At the end, we spent six nights in Tulum. It was high season, and in Tulum in particular, they know very well how to relieve tourists of their money. We have traveled a lot, but we have hardly ever received so little in return for so much money. This is not only due to the Hotel Nest, but also. We paid just over USD 2,000 per night for two rooms – we were traveling with our son. The rooms were okay, average standard. The water flowed slowly and regulating the temperature was a feat. When it rained once, our room was flooded, as we heard from other guests who had to move twice, not just ours. No excuse from the hotel. There were a few silverfish in the closet, but that can happen in the south. The kitchen was below us. Late at night and early in the morning, there was a terrible smell coming into our room from all sides. Breakfast was limited to the bare minimum. No buffet, each egg cost extra. The grounds are beautiful, the beach is very nice. But there isn't a sun lounger for each of the few rooms. Some smart alecks then reserve their sun loungers very early every morning with their beach towels, probably in exchange for tips. This, and the fact that the already scarce sun loungers are rented out to strangers, means that people who have to pay a lot for their accommodation have to spread their beach towels on the sand. Or they rent a sun lounger at another hotel.
Summary: We had a nice time, but we won't be going back to Tulum, at least not in the highest season.
