The Biggest D.C.-Area Restaurant Openings in August 2025 | Eater DC

"Channeling West Virginia’s Italian immigrant cuisine and boisterous dive bars, this lively newcomer fills the former Whitlow’s and B Live space with playful Americanized Italian fare—think iconic pepperoni rolls, spicy rigatoni, and a mortadella-and-burrata sandwich loaded with pistachios and hot honey—alongside bar staples like burgers, beer-brined wings, and pulled pork nachos. Wallet-friendly drinks include house cocktails under $14 and seasonal moonshine flights for $15, and it keeps Whitlow’s tradition alive with $3 mug nights: $3 draft beers on Thursdays (3–6 p.m.) and $5 buckets of five beers on Mondays (6–9 p.m.)." - Tierney Plumb

I will be returning to Nettie's tavern to try everything else on the menu. Not sure how they season the popcorn but its very good. Mondays is 50cent wings for 5 wings. I had the Nettie Melt and it was very good. The fries that came with it were also nice and crispy and not oily. I liked that the menu had also reasonably priced healthy options like the Branzino bowl. The staff is also nice.

Initial take- As someone who’s from New Jersey and went to wvu, this is a happy medium. We ordered pepperoni rolls as an appetizer, they were PACKED with pepperoni, best since ordering at Tropics in Morgantown. The blueberry lemon ricotta pancakes were AMAZING. We also ordered steak and eggs, can’t go wrong. The brunch belinis are quite the deal and do the trick. Vibes are right and I’m excited to see this restaurant during football season. UPDATED 10/5/25- football Sunday brunch Came for Sunday brunch. Had the most BIZARRE EXPERIENCE EVER. Was seated far away from other tables being served. Fine. Didn’t have a waitress check in on us for TWENTY MINUTES. Didn’t have water, popcorn, service- just sitting there. Ended up having 4 different random servers. Every time I looked around there was no waiters or waitresses working… yet it wasn’t busy and there WERE many people working… I don’t know where they were going I guess hanging out in the kitchen? But we had to give the same order multiple times. In the same 2 hours we were there we had to order everything TWICE. (15 minute breaks between double orders) No one was checking in on us. Then, I ordered the same meal I had last time I was here. The steak was half the size as last time with picture proof, burnt, and didn’t come with potatoes. It was pitiful. When I sent back the food, they were receptive and apologized, but the manager offered a free dessert as an apology. After having bad service for two hours, do I really want to wait for a dessert? He also sent the waitress to deliver the message instead of coming and personally apologizing. As a business owner, you should care about customer relationships and not have your waitress do your dirty work. I want to like this place, as our first experience was great, but in the few weeks difference of coming, the quality has gone down hill severely. The waitresses and food runners and hostesses were very nice, but management needs to be on top of how often they check in with tables and have a better system in place. Also, food quality should be consistent each visit. You can’t build a community of regulars if this is where you’re performing shortly after opening.

As a WV native, I appreciate what Nettie’s is trying to do in creating a WV-inspired restaurant. While they’ve correctly picked up on the importance of Italian food in WV culture, they’ve fumbled the iconic state food—the pepperoni roll. A true pepperoni roll is characterized by its simplicity—soft, white bread and pepperoni. Usually no cheese, and definitely no tomato sauce. It’s all about execution. The pepperoni fat should infuse some of the bread as it bakes, creating a pleasant fusion of sweet bread and savory meat. Serving the pepperoni roll room temp brings out the sweetness. What was served at Nettie’s? A glorified pizza roll, filled with as much cheese as pepperoni, piping hot, and served with a side of tomato sauce. The worst part was the bread. Far from fluffy, the bread had the appearance of an egg roll, and was crunchy on the outside and doughy on the inside. It dripped grease as I bit into it. I mostly skipped the sauce, which masks the flavor of the dish.

We just went our first time. We knew from the free popcorn we got that this place was going to be good! We got the ravioli which was great. My wife got the short rib, and it was delicious, and so much food. She ate about a third of it and took the rest home. I got the drunken ribeye, and it was great. A bigger flatter steak, but I really enjoyed it. Fries were good and plenty of those. I’m surprised I ate it all. Brussel sprouts were a little spicy and a little asainy. Really great. We got the peanut butter pie. So good! The peanut butter was really thick in an awesome way. I thought about asking if I could buy a whole pie. The only negative was that our table was a bit wobbly. I mentioned it to the server, and I actually think he might follow through and get them fixed. We will be back!!

Solid food and very cute decors. We weren’t like blown away but for the location and good portions we had a good time. They don’t have mocktails though and I personally don’t like non-alcoholic beer options

First time back since it changed to Nettie’s Tavern. Went for the burger lunch deal on Wednesday. Burger was great and fries were extra crispy. Recommend getting there early. Was pretty full when we left. Didn’t see any options for vegans or vegetarians on the menu, but that’s not a big deal for me.

Google
The best popcorn I’ve ever had greets you at the table. The menu has something for everyone. Great Caesar salad and burger. Fries are ridiculous! There are so many other things I want to try! This is a great neighborhood place. Can’t wait to try the short rib grilled cheese!

Went for the soft opening and will definitely be back. Service was 10/10 from the host to the servers. We got the pepperoni rolls, Nettie’s tea, the drunken ribeye, the chicken cutlet Caesar salad, and the tiramisu. This cutlet was HUGE (hand for scale) and so good. Can’t wait for more visits in the future.

Yelp
Fav new spot in the DC area! Great drink deals, yummy popcorn while you wait, and huge portions!

Yelp
My daughter recently moved to Arlington and was excited to go to Nettie's so we went when I visited. I'll start by saying the food was excellent and portions large. The downside, but fixable, was the service. Once seated, it took the waitress about 20 minutes to come over to us. Other servers brought out our food (app and main corse at same time) and one brought water that waitress had forgotten to bring. After ordering, we didn't see our waitress again until she approached us to say her shift was over and we needed to close our tab. I was planning to have a second drink, and my daughter had planned on ordering dessert. We would definitely give Nettie's a second try, just hope to have better service.

Yelp
Nettie's Tavern is a total win. The service was super friendly and fast, and the food was even better. The nachos were loaded and delicious (perfect for sharing, though I kind of wanted them all to myself), and the spicy vodka rigatoni was amazing--creamy, flavorful, with just the right amount of heat. Great vibes, great food, great people. Definitely adding this spot to the regular rotation.

Yelp
Solidly OK. Paid about $160 (with tip) for four beers, four entrees, and two appetizers. Ordered the beef tallow fries, the venison meatballs, Sam's seasonal (Oktoberfest), and a patty melt with a side salad. The tomato sauce is real sweet, you get two meatballs and three small slices of bread. I was excited about the venison and it was moist and well constructed. The basket of fries was loaded, but they were fairly limp with lots of potato skin. The patty melt was the major disappointment - super dry, no sauce, and not very melty for a patty melt. Thousand Island or the like was nowhere to be found... It was thinly smashed beef, lots of onions, and cheese on sourdough bread. I'm all for supporting a purist, but it was uncomfortably dry and bland. Really wish I had sauce. Other orders included the pepperoni flatbread, chicken parm sando (could've benefited from more sauce), and the grilled cheese which came with au jus. The beers were good and the pours were generous. Staff was attentive and kind. Lots of country music and football on the screens. It's an awesome spot with a great location, I just wish the food was better. I plan to try again, but might only come for drink specials. $5 for a bucket of 5 beers on Mondays? Sounds amazing

Yelp
Stopped by Nettie's Tavern again for dinner with some friends and had a much better experience this time. We ordered a mix of dishes - salads, a burger, pasta, and the French onion soup and everything was excellent. The food quality really stood out, especially the soup, which was rich and flavorful. Service was also much improved; our server was attentive and friendly without being overbearing. One thing that we had issues with this and last time though was the water. Not sure if its what they are washing the mugs in or just thr water in general but it has a strange taste almost minty in a way. Regardless of that this was overall, a great turnaround from our last visit, and we all left happy

Yelp
I've stopped here a couple times now to split a quick dinner with friends and have been impressed by our meals both times! The first time I had the short rib grilled cheese which was so delicious, and the second time I had the chicken cutlet Caesar salad. I eat a lot of Caesar salads but this is one of the best I've had! I want to come back on a normal night so I can sit down and get my own meal because I can't say what the service is like yet but I'll definitely be returning. It's a great location and very open inside, great for coming for drinks and dinner with a large group or escaping the crowds at BOE next door.

Yelp
Really friendly sweet service from Candy!! My friend spilled an entire beer on herself by accident and they were really nice about it - refilled it, checked on her, switched our tables. Their happy hour deals are great. We took advantage of the $5 pepperoni rolls and $5 draft beers (before 6pm). There was a little confusion about the prices of it at first, so the server had to check with the manager - but they figured it out in the end. The pepperoni rolls are a must get! Especially for $5. They're super yummy and quite filling. The marinara it came with was also delish. After 6pm we ordered a $5 bucket of bud lites - it came with 5 cans in it! That's a Monday only deal. We also tried their tallow fries which came with a yummy truffle aioli. And we loved their complimentary popcorn. All in all, a cute space! I would come back for a full dinner and for the other daily deals.

Got the burrata salad it was huge and yummy! The tavern breakfast was good too. Got the Bellinis and the blueberry was best. Love the vibe here. Good food! Nice service!

Yelp
I am glad this spot is getting foot traffic but they still have a few small kinks to work out. It was absolutely packed a on a Friday night so get a reservation if you really want to eat here. Service was really hit or miss- we had one hostess literally want to take all our menus before we even ordered mains while another was super sweet. Our waiter was good but obviously got overwelmed with the amount of people at one point, disappearing before we could order a second round or get our forgotten water with a straw. Do not come here if you are in a big hurry or don't like loud spots - it's definitely a crowded, chaotic spot. For drinks we ordered some wine, beer, and the Netties spritz cocktail and the tea one. The cocktails here that we tried were decent, I would pass on the spritz but you felt the alcohol in the Netties tea. For apps we got the pepperoni roll, ricotta toast, and the mozz squares - do not pass up the pepperoni roll. Both the bread portion and the pepperoni ratio was fantastic, really reminded me of a WVU game. The mozz squares were food and quite large and the ricotta toast was ok - not bad but nothing special. For our mains, we all went with something different. We got the patty melt, the drunken ribeye, the spicy vodka rigatoni, and the almost cheesesteak like sandwich. Meal portions are quite large and we loved the fries that came with most of the meals. My spicy rigatoni was tasty but had zero spice like at all. The truffle on the steak sandwich was a fun addition and my husband loved the cab sauce on top of the drunken ribeye. At the end of the meal, prices were decent, and we ended up with the peanut butter pie which was tasty but not sure if it's homemade or comes frozen. No birthday candles to celebrate a birthday but food was decent, just hoping service levels out.

Yelp
Cool spot! Warm vibes. Great specials throughout the week. Our group agreed that we'd love to have a table on a football weekend and enjoy the food and drinks. Service was great and we went a couple days after opening.

Yelp
Food is great! Atmosphere is good! Deals are even better... but for the love of god, turn on the damn sound for the football games. If they played the audio me and all my friends would be there every prime time game!

Yelp
What a beautiful place. Service was wonderful. We had a nice visit. Arlington has so many choices and places to go to.

Joe B.

Yelp
The popcorn here is the best, it's better than the movie theater popcorn. Julie is the best bartender, provides the best hospitality and keeps up on making sure we have our drinks when needed. But honestly, the best popcorn ever!!

Yelp
A great revamp of an old spot! Bar food but well done. Great TV setup. Sara is amazing!!

Yelp
Great place to watch Monday night football mainly due to the bucket deal and food. #1 reason to go to Arlington I'd say

Zachary M.

Yelp
Best happy hour of my life, would recommend completely. With every fiber of my being.

Yelp
We had a delicious dinner tonight, Branzino and a salad. Loved the food with generous portions. It will be a restaurant on our permanent list. It was quite loud inside so we decided to eat outside. Perhaps we'll fine inside next time. Service was fine. I suspect everyone will get into a groove.

Alyx L.

Yelp
This place just opened! Definitely an improvement from the last place that was here. I was with a larger group of people and the service was still good. The place was packed, food came out fairly quickly and was good quality. We were all trying each other's food and no one was disappointed with what they got. I would definitely go back again.

Maureen D.

Yelp
Ambiance is clever. Service was good. The place is very open and very loud. It is definitely a bar scene and will cater to the young crowd.

Ryan M.

Yelp
Was sitting with my family having a lovely time , till this guy came up to our table offering us free drinks etc come to find out he's the owner. As nice as he seemed it was weird having someone come up to our table that not in a uniform. And sadly enough we overheard the staff saying The owner isn't paying them properly? As great as the food was, you can tell this place isn't going to lasting long. Especially with the owner getting drunk and giving away free drinks and food.

Ben R.

Yelp
It took about 10 minutes for a server to finally get to us and finally got drinks. My girlfriend ordered the moonshine tea drink and tasted like watered down tea with moonshine. The worst part was that when our food came it got sent to the table next to us, the table questioned the food as it did not look like what they ordered, yet the server confirmed it was what they got, so the table began to pick through it, finally realizing that it wasn't their'so they ended up sending it back. We ended up getting our food 1 minute later, knowing it already got picked through. Definitely don't recommend this place, server never check once, couldn't even get a refill on my beer.

Yelp
Went to try this restaurant on Sunday at about 6:45 PM- it was not very busy but it wasn't empty, there were a decent amount of people who all appeared to be enjoying themselves and having a good time. The inside was nice, and clean - they did a great job transforming the space from what it was. We were greeted by a nice host who sat us down right away. We sat down and waited for a waiter to come to our table. The waitress walked by our table at three times without any acknowledgment of us being there- eventually after at least 5 minutes of waiting she walked by again and I asked her "excuse me, are you our waitress?" She said absolutely nothing and had a look of disgust and immediately walked over and said something to the host. I am not sure what she said but as she walked away the host turned to look at us (we were seated directly behind him) with a mortified look of embarrassment. Needless to say, we felt very uncomfortable and left without enjoying any of the food, which actually looked really good. I can fully understand being busy/short staffed and having to wait a bit longer for a waiter to come to your table, and I would have been completely fine if she had responded saying "sorry I am really busy I will be with your shortly" or "I am not your waitress but I'll send them right over". Eventually I will give this place a second chance and hopefully my experience is completely different.
