This historic building known as The (old?) Hitching Post has become home to Nettle Meadow cheeses in the form of a production area, mini market and tavern/restaurant.
I absolutely love the log cabin, rustic, traditional Adirondack vibe. The spaces are well thought out and the restaurant can accommodate a decent sized crowd without jamming people on top of each other. Last night they had live music which is always a nice touch.
The four of us are familiar with Nettle Meadow cheeses and we decided to order the "pick your own" boards. Our server, while absolutely lovely, was unable to answer any questions about the different varieties...so that's probably something that can be improved upon. But, later on, we did find the "cheat sheet" that gave more details about the various choices, so we know for next time.
There is a nice selection of beers on tap/cans/bottles, wines and non alcoholic options. I chose the tap kombucha; others had the tap IPA and a bottle of cream soda. Everyone was happy with their beverage choices.
A small plate with cornbread, focaccia and butter started things off. Very nice.
But......the cheese board was EPIC. This thing was absolutely gigantic and almost a work of art. The five different cheeses were interspersed with "accoutrements" (honey, preserves, walnuts, pickles, cured meat, crackers, bread slices, pickled onions, olives, sweet peppers, cookies, other stuff I might not recall) and fresh fruit (blueberries, grapes and a giant strawberry).
We all jumped right in and went to town on this thing...and left nothing to the imagination. The cheeses that we ordered were all soft - next time we all agreed that we will definitely use the aforementioned "cheat sheet" and throw at least one or two hard cheese options in there. That said, everything was absolutely delicious.
I had considered getting a salad or just a soup, but I was hangry and decided to go more on the hearty sandwich side; I chose the "gun-slinger" (kunik, bacon and pear preserves on ciabatta bread). This sandwich was full of carbs, greasy melted soft cheese with just the right amount of bacon and sweet preserves. Salty, sweet and decadent - exactly what I needed last night. There was a lovely little side salad that had tomatoes, fresh fruit and some kind of - yes - cheese as well...delicious!
Others at the table had the carrot-ginger soup (rave reviews), the "grilled cheese of the day" (bacon, sliced apples and kunik...yum) and the "calamity jane" salad. Based on the salad feedback, that was the only item that fell short. It was described as bland and the portion was small-ish. Had I ordered the salad, I would have likely had something else...because I clearly eat more than most regular people.
Desserts were VERY tempting....maybe next time. I will absolutely be back!!
