"Richard Neutra built the “VDL Research House I” in the '30s as a live/work space where he proved, with sweeping windows, that spatial limitations need not constrict one’s lifestyle or budget. It’s a premier example of modern architecture in California and is under continual renovation by researchers at Cal Poly Pomona; these same architecture students give excellent tours on Saturdays from 11 to 3."

Had the chance to visit the Confluence exhibition at the VDL House. Lily Clark and Lachlan Turczan’s installations truly transformed the space, offering a serene and meaningful exploration of water, light, and space. So grateful to have caught the final moments of such an inspiring experience.

Tour was great and very informative but it was very crowded. It would have been a much better experience if they'd limited the amount of people per group.

Google
Excellent landmark with knowledgeable tour guides. After the tour they give you free rein to explore the beautiful Neutra residence. It appears the program that manages this property could use some donations for restoration work but it's still in remarkable condition.

Book Your Appointment To Appreciate! Love this house. There are so many magical moments. Book your appointment in advance as there are people coming and going. The home evokes a lot of serenity, which is great for those of us who were eager to tour the home. There are lots of small details, which made traveling through the home all the more merrier. There are gorgeous hand written labels on the switches, a true vintage stove with vintage dial designs, a built in blender unit, a book shelf system to die for, a mirrored bedroom/patio door against glass, a meditation space upstairs (that has the most beautiful privacy screen), and zen pools intended for water to pool, creating the perspective of it meeting the resuviour. Everyone was lovely. Our tour guides were great.

The house and studio is a masterwork. Gain insight into the mind of an architectural great. It feels as relevant today as it must have felt groundbreaking when it was constructed. Well-preserved. The tours are conducted by informed and earnest Cal Poly Pamona students.

Google
A must see in Silver Lake. Its a quick visit but worth it. It’s only opened on Saturday. I went during an art exhibit period so it looked slightly different while I was there.

Google
Intimate curation and tour of 'built in' exhibition.

Google
Even though it's"closed" it is right on a busy street so you can still see it clearly and even see in side a little bit.

Yelp
When planning our trip to LA, we were interested in taking a couple of architectural tours. Hot off the heels of my recent trip to Chicago where I took an architectural river cruise tour, I thought this would be a perfect way to explore one of the interesting houses in the city. Neutra VDL House was on our list of places to explore, so we made plans to check it out. We initially were unsure if we would be able to see Neutra; they only offer tours on Saturdays from 11 to 3, and when we checked booking there never seemed to be the option to book a tour the one Saturday we were going to be in LA. We decided to check it out the day of anyway, and were pleasantly surprised to find out upon arrival that they were accepting walk-ins for tours. Neutra VDL House is located in Silver Lake, and was designed by Austrian architect Richard Neutra and his son Dion. The house was originally built in the 30s, but burned down in the 60s and was rebuilt into the present structure. The home was originally financed by Cees H. Van der Leeuw, hence the name Neutra VDL House. The house is now owned by Cal Poly Pomona, and their students conduct tours of the house once weekly. The tour was great - it lasted around a half hour, where we were taken through most areas of the house. We learned about the history of the structure and the specific design features that made the house unique. My favorite part of the house was the upstairs area which served multiple uses and had great views of the reservoir. Overall, this was a great way to spend part of an afternoon. The surroundings are very serene, and the interesting architecture was right up my aesthetic alley.

Yelp
STOP - Don't go here! On their website, it indicates guided tours are available of the Neutra VDL House. Then when you arrive, the person taking money indicates there are actually NO docents available to give you a tour--but they are still happy to take your money so you can just wander around the house. The parking is terrible also. Avoid this tourist trap.

Yelp
What a lovely way to spend half an hour. House is gorgeous. Lots of fun, quirky details in the tour and the sense of floating above the rest of the world. Only one complaint: the website says only 5 people in each tour but there were like 10 in ours and like another 10 in the next tour on our heels, meaning the place was teeming with people, killing the original intended chill vibe.

Yelp
What an amazing place. First, if you're a student or alum of Cal Poly Pomona then you don't have to pay a fee. I had a great time getting led around by an architecture student. I loved seeing how the architect added space and storage to a small space. The view from the third floor was fantastic. If you like architecture then definitely stop by and visit this interesting house.

Yelp
I dropped by last Saturday to check out this house for the first time and it is a brilliant work of modernist design! I forgot my tour guide's name (tours are run by students from Cal Poly Pomona who own the building) but he was very passionate about the home and was full of details to share about the place and its history associated with legendary architect Richard Neutra. What I love about this home is just how much it takes advantage of the little space it has and maximizes efficiency throughout, including a foldable corner that connects the kitchen with the living room! There is a great sense of balance between manmade and natural elements and offers a comfortable lifestyle if ever I were to call this home (which is highly unlikely). What's interesting is that this is the second home on the same property, the first version was built in the 30s and burned down in the 60s so this house is the current version built from 1964-1965. According to a few models the old house was a bit more strict and linear, while the current house is a bit more playful and experimental by comparison. Visiting this house has given me a new appreciation for this architect's work and I highly recommend this to everyone interested in architecture!

Yelp
What a gem we pass by everyday!! Neutra VDL House has taught us, once again, we need to stop & smell the roses. Walking inside, without knowing what year it was built, I thought it may be in the late 80s. It was built in 1930s. Let me explain before you crack your jaws laughing. 1. All sleek millwork custom built into the walls with tremendous storage fittings and appliances inside. (You do not expect or detect from its facade) 2. Creativity surpasses restrictions and limitations. Must see for yourself highlight includes: The passageways between the kitchen and entertainment room. This nano treatment is tastefully executed. 3. Optic illusions playing out at its max. NEUTRA VDL 'is not' a tree house, however, at your eye level while sitting at the dinner table, you may believe you actually inside one. Pay attention to the front facing edge of supporting shelves on the book cabinets challenging your common logic. Books are heavy and how possible these thin wood shelves can support them..... 4. A petite reflective pool outside the bedroom of Richard Neutra's wife Dione (yes they had their own sleeping quarter), it was created so Dione can enjoy the reflections of moving water as they played out at night on the ceiling while she was almost fallen to sleep. Perhaps as a way to accompany his wife while he still staying up drafting plans. 5. Doors. Every hidden hinges, rails or latches serve the architect's love of the bewilderedness while considering comfort of people inside. Must give yourself some downtime in the penthouse for the sun to warm up your skin. There, the tour guide who show you a special hinged doors. For a mere $10 donations, you can spend tremendous time in a quiet early Saturday afternoon mesmerizing Richard's love of nature, how he designed the house so the nature came to you. " Far more important is the way the door offers "the first deep breath of liberation... before breakfast or on the first warm and scented spring day." -words from Dione's memoirs as she recalled her husband's philosophy of architects were responsible for the stimuli sensory of human being living inside. 屋內所有mill work獨立定制custom built in。

Yelp
Although it sounds like a medical facility developing a special skin cream, this house was designed by Richard Neutra. Built as Neutra's residence, he added VDL to the name in honor of Dr. Van Der Leeuw, the person who helped finance the house. The small original front structure was created in 1932. A smaller rear addition was done in 1939. The front structure was replaced and modified in 1963 after it burned down. The exterior doesn't stand-out, but the interior along with the terraced water features are the strengths of the design. Neutra also designed the LA County Hall of Records in downtown, the Lovell House in neighboring Los Feliz, and the Kaufmann house in Palm Springs. The house is only open on Saturdays. Because the tours are led by Cal Poly Pomona students, no tours are available during school breaks. Tours are not run on pre-defined times and scheduling a tour in advance is unnecessary. Our 30-minute tour lasted 20 minutes. Freely roaming the house after the tour was allowed. Photography was permitted both inside and outside the house. Park on the street along the Silver Lake Reservoir. About two dozen people showed up at 11A when the house opened. Coming later after the initial crush subsides is better because it avoids cramped spaces and the unorganized crowd control by the students. The students were not well trained to give the tour. Because I had prior knowledge of the house, I explained to my girlfriend some of what the tour guide said because she couldn't hear or comprehend the disjointed speech by the timid student. I didn't expect a guide with the training and stage presence of Disneyland's Jungle Cruise, but I'd hope for at least someone that I could understand - not pay to be a lab rat to help give a student some experience and confidence.

Yelp
Only open between 11 and 3 on Saturdays and not at all on holiday weekends. Really enjoyed seeing the house and taking the tour. Try to get in a small group since the guides are soft spoken. After the tour take a walk up Neutra Place nearby to see some of the family's other designs. And laugh heartily at that enormous Breaking Bad meth mobile that someone is unfortunately holding on to.

Yelp
I had friends in town who are design enthusiasts, and we crafted our own mini-architecture tour. We loved VDL house, and it was one of the highlights. Our tour guide was great and enhanced our experience.

Yelp
the neutra VDL research house is los angeles historic cultural monument #640 and deservedly so. built by austrian architect richard neutra in 1932 to serve as a home for his family as well as a design studio for his architectural practice, it's named in honor of dutch industrialist cornelius van der leeuw who sponsored the construction costs. neutra, a peer of fellow modernist architect rudolph schindler, built the VDL research house as an embodiment of his 'survival through design' theory which anticipated technology's effect on society and touted architecture's role in enabling man to survive those coming technological advances. his progressive design approach sought to address the psychological effects of space and illusion in order to demonstrate how humans can behave and survive in a restricted space, which is how he foresaw the future. the radically modern house embodies the then-current european avant-garde design movement (the bauhaus school of design was just coming to an end in 1933) and introduced ideas never before seen in america. the generous use of mirrors and glass create illusions of large, airy spaces and walking inside the house evokes a profoundly esthetic and artistic experience. i visited in early september to check out xavier veilhan's 'architectones' installation. the exhibit consisted of monochromatic sculptural pieces placed in various parts of the house with the intention of opening a dialogue between the objects and the modernist structure. emphasizing the function of purposeful design, i enjoyed the playful interaction that the works of art activated in the space. one of the most iconic houses in the los angeles area that is open to the public, the neutra VDL research house is a lovely way to spend ten dollars for an afternoon of architectural delight.

Yelp
Street parking is a little tricky. Park a little way off and walk a few hundred feet, nothing to it. Visited the house during an Ikebana exhibition (Japanese flower arrangement) and was pleasantly surprised to find the Neutra House housing the exhibit. Noticed quite a few architecture students visiting. But, there are many interesting aspects of the house that would certainly amuse the non-architects (me!). The place could use fa little up-keep and still preserve its vintage appeal. May be the funding isn't there !? It just seemed a little run down. Overall, an impressive advant garde ahead of its time structure. Worth a visit. Free unless if you want a tour. That would be $10 per person.

Yelp
A friend and I happened on a tour yesterday afternoon and could not have been happier! Our young student guide Fabian was very knowledgeable and very patient with my many questions. This house is so fascinating that today I spent quite some time on my computer at its website. This definitely warrants another visit, especially at night. Go!
