How to Spend 24 Food-Filled Hours in Nevada City Like a Local | Eater SF

"The tasting room offers a diverse selection of varietals served as a flight, by the glass, or by the bottle; you can sit and relax in the tasting room, explore the rotating art gallery, covered patio, or wine garden, and since the barrel room and production facility are on-site you may even be able to participate in grape-crushing experiences." - Marisa Churchill

My friends and I came in and caught the end of a very lovely acoustic performance, which was so lovely. But the shining star of our night was be tended by Katey at the bar. She had the most excellent, and considerate presence. Her tenacity through a busy night was strong and delightful. She was gracious to let us enjoy our new favorite wine even though she was closing soon. We will surely be back again to see her!

Google
Great little winery that we’ve been to a few times. This review is based on a wine I bought long ago, a 2007 late harvest Zinfandel which we just enjoyed as a celebratory wine and it was incredible. Only regret is I only had one bottle to share. If offered again would buy and let sit for a few and enjoy with those that deserve it.

Delicious wines in a beautiful setting. The patio tables have small table top fire pits. A bountiful charcuterie board pairs well with wine flights. We enjoyed the all white flight and the reserve flight. The tempernallio and Barbara are outstanding.

I was invited to a dinner tasting as part of a pre wedding activity. The choice was very good. The location is great. Besides the large inside, there is a terrace. Not to forget the kindness of the people serving.

Google
The location is amazing. Really cute tasting room. The reds were okay. I actually liked the Chardonnay the best and I don't typically like whites more than reds. It's worth a stop if you are already playing tourist in Nevada City.

Google
Nevada City Winery Best place to have a Privite party. I did a Birthday party for my husband we had 70 people and it was fantastic! Carla was amazing for putting the event together. Charcuterie platters were amazing, tables set up perfect, and the whole staff was fantastic and helpful with super great attitude. I highly recommend Nevada City winery for a great party venue! Thank you to all that made this great party happen!

Google
I love NC Winery! I love the relaxing atmosphere that is dog friendly. They also have a great outdoor patio. And the wine is good; so is the charcuterie plate. Or you can bring your own food. I order from Brewhaus across the street. It's my Thursday night date night with friends.

Kimberly S.

Google
Cute ambiance but poor service. It was slow too so I am not sure why it took 15 minutes for someone to come out and take our order as well as never check back when we all had empty wine glasses.

Yelp
Beautiful drive over to Nevada City, California today for some wine tasting and browsing around the town. Very quaint and friendly people here. Our tasting was made special by Paula, pours were generous, charcuterie board enough for the three of us, Wines were excellent! Indoors or outdoors seating available, Loved the heating at the table, just a little chill in the air, beautiful setting. Bought some gifts and wine and look forward to our next trip back!

Yelp
Maybe it's the full day of wine tasting that has thrown my senses off but the wine here is ok. There are several other wineries down the road 8 minutes in Grass Valley that offer as good or better wines for a lot less in tasting fees. One even for free. While a beautiful location with lots of outside seating it was a really hot day with limited shade. The service was great and pretty prompt service. My two issues are the quality of the wine and the price per glass. Choose the tasting flight to get a feel for the wine you want to drink. It's virtually the same price. Club membership seems to offer a value. It's worth the visit if you are interested, I am not a fan and thought the wines were overpriced. We won't be back.

Yelp
What a nice afternoon here at Nevada City, our weather in Reno was so perfect we decided to head down to Nv. City for the day. We have been to this winery many times, and it is a perfect place to relax and enjoy some awesome wines. Paula who helped us order a few flights of wine was very helpful and so friendly. We love there tasting room and fun things to purchase there. Great wines to sample. And we did purchase a few outstanding wines. Well return again in the springtime.

Yelp
- Awesome place to have a glass or bottle of wine! - Call ahead to see if you need a reservation or can walk in - Tables with fireplaces outside, which are cute and cozy - Good customer service, our server was attentive and nice - We ordered a bottle of the Cabernet Franc, which we enjoyed - Charcuterie boards looked tasty, in case you need/want a midday or pre-dinner snack - There is indoor seating too, it looked comfy and well designed - Would return in the future! Cheers!

Yelp
Lovely winery in Nevada City. I called a few days in advance of Mother's Day and purchased my mom a wine tasting over the phone. The person that I spoke to over the phone was so nice and even offered to write up a card for me. My mom loved it! The service here is incredible the the wines are delicious. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
If you live anywhere near Nevada City or even as far away as Reno or Sacramento and you're looking for a wedding venue, you know, because you're getting married, you might wanna give Nevada City Winery a look. Vesta and I are wedding photographers and we've worked at a lotta venues and this one is right up there with the best. Plus, for years and years we've been wine people. We're in love with the stuff. Can't help it, it's in our blood, running thru our veins. And these Nevada City Wine people make great wine. We photographed Kelly and Mike's wedding there. The ceremony was in the barrel room and the reception was upstairs in the tasting room, where there is plenty enough room for eighty guests or maybe even a hundred to eat, party and dance the evening away. And, as you're enjoying getting married at the winery or attending a good friend's wedding, you can drink wonderful wine, which will make a wonderful day even more wonderful. PS. I'll post some more photos of the winery and some from Kelly and Mikes wedding there in a few days, just as soon as I finish processing them.

Yelp
We were in Nevada City for their Christmas Carol Festival and walked all around when we spotted this wine tasting place. What a find! Unfortunately we found this place when the sun went down and we couldn't enjoy their patio area! ( Too cold and dark ) As we walked in...we saw beautiful art on the walls. They had all kinds of wine stuff for sale. We walked over to the wine bar to check things out. They were not doing wine tasting due to the festival activities. They were selling wine by the glass or bottle!! The lady was super nice. When we asked about their Pinot noir, she was very cordial and explained everything to us. She even gave us a sample before we purchased it. They have a few seating areas. We were lucky enough that while we were there, there was a couple of guys singing some great old tunes!! If we lived in this cute little town, this would be a FANTASTIC date night place to sip to great wine and listen to music!! We will definitely come back!!!

Yelp
One of my favorite small town wineries. An easy, fast trip to beautiful Nevada City from Reno. So many wonderful bed and breakfast places to stay in while in this lovely fun town. Nevada City winery is a small winery, that is very friendly, and has a great environment to hang out in. When the weather is nice, often in Nevada City, the patio is the place to sit and have a glass of wine. Very pet friendly, so we always take our small dog, and hang out, and visit with other fans. They have wonderful wine club with special events that are absolutely amazing. Great food, great music and free flowing wine.

Yelp
Charming little winery - unfortunately we had to wait almost 20 minutes before they dropped off our tasting and glass of wine, of which the didn't even explain the wines or leave a menu for us to navigate the tasting with. Overall the service wasn't that great and the wines average.

Yelp
Yelpsop's Fables: the mindful monkey One day in summertime, on a warm but pleasant Friday in mid August, a monkey walked into the Nevada City Winery tasting room about 30 minutes after it opened. Not just any monkey, you understand. He was a most mindful monkey. He was not just here for the wines. He also wanted to see the flowers and the artwork and taste the delicious cheese plate while savoring the full range of wines available. But upon entering, he realized that the staff were somewhat preoccupied with planning for a big event that evening: a winemaker lecture and party on the eve of a wine tasting weekend that would draw in the crowds. Once the monkey realized this, he wisely relocated to the lovely outdoor deck, where he slowly sampled his wines while enjoying his cheese plate immensely. The Sangiovese and Zinfandel were his favorites, full of fruit and spice without being too heavy or oaked. The Cabernet Franc was also excellent, as was a Dolcetto that he was able to try as well, because he had been so patient and understanding. He loved sitting on the deck as a light breeze cooled his tiny brown body and made him smile with contentment. Before he realized it, a full two hours had gone by. The wines were so pleasant and well made and the afternoon was so tranquil, he nearly fell asleep basking in the sunshine and dreaming of a tasting room full of monkeys. Barrels of monkeys, naturally! Moral: Be mindful when visiting a tasting room for the first time. The staff have a lot to do besides pouring your wines. Take a break. Admire the view. Don't guzzle your wine. Savor it instead. You just might end up having as awesome a time here as did the mindful monkey.

Yelp
This is one of the more venerable working wineries in the North Sierra Foothills, with a wide range of appealing and affordable wines in the $15 to $30 price range. The tasting room is spacious enough for dozens of guests, including a charming outdoor deck that overlooks the winery facilities themselves as well as parts of Deer Creek. There is a gift shop area as well as a mini art gallery displaying paintings by local artists, as well as numerous wine related pictures, posters, and collectibles. The love for the grape is all around you. Tastings include a regular flight of five wines or a premium flight that showcases lesser known varietals like Dolcetto, Tempranillo, and Primitivo alongside excellent French as well as Italian varietals like Sangiovese. The style is food friendly and balanced with grapes sourced from quality vineyards in the Sierra Foothills, especially Nevada County, where the winery is located. A Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is also made, along with a Sonoma County sparkling wine. There are also red and white blends that cost around $12 with case or club discount if you are looking to make a larger purchase for a special event like wedding or big birthday celebration. I loved the single vineyard Cabernet Franc, for its restrained ripeness and aromas of violet, herb, and dried flower petals, but the Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel were delicious as well and made cleverly with small percentages of other grapes in many cases. Among the whites, the Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc were especially appealing to my palate for their dryness and distinctive fruit essences. You can compliment your wine with cheese plates prepared by Wheyward Girl creamery in town, along with cured meats, crostini, and other light snacks. Especially if you have time and the weather is nice, you could easily spend a full two hours enjoying your wine on the deck. We did! Highly recommended as an ideal first impression sort of wine tasting experience should it be your first time visiting Nevada City's charming and historic central business district.

Yelp
Loved all of the reds I tasted. Very affordable for the quality. Enjoyed speaking with the winemaker as well. All staff were friendly and the venue was beautiful. We enjoyed it so much we became members! (Which is also a great deal, btw!)

Yelp
I hate to whine about this winery, but unfortunately the service was slow and the value was low. We had a reservation and were told to wait by the server who never returned. Another employee noticed us standing by the entrance after a while and escorted us back to our table on the porch that had been vacant the whole time. We scanned into the contactless menu (yay!) only to be greeted by the server with a duplicate contact-full physical menu (boo!). Confusing and a waste of needing to use my Bath and Bodyworks hand sanitizer. With only ~6 tables total, it still took a really long time to get any service (placing an order, getting water, asking for the check). The biggest disappointment was the value of the tasting flight. It was the smallest taste of 6 wines I've ever experienced especially for $16, and it wasn't waived even when purchasing 2 bottles after! Pros: the wine itself was pretty tasty (I liked the rosé and petit franc), there was one employee that was really good at doing damage control/filling in huge gaps with service, and the location was nice.

Yelp
Nevada City Winery is one of the older wineries in the Sierra Foothills sourcing their grapes outside the standard areas. Their large tasting room is located in downtown Nevada City on the south side of the downtown area. Parking is tough with limited metered on street options. The winery has an extensive menu of varietals. They charge a fee which is waived with purchase. The wines are average to great with some unique options. Fortunately the tasting room is nice with a cozy country feel and a back patio that overlooks the valley. Overall the winery is a nice option when visiting the area, especially on a weekday. It suffers from a lot of the problems of other Nevada City businesses. However people still love the wine and the area.

Ceanne B.

Yelp
Very classy and fun atmosphere. Highly recommend. For the wine and the great experience/atmosphere! :)

Yelp
Suuuucks Drove all way here from Sacramento after checking to if open. Got there 5 mins before 2. This lady open door turn lights on etc then comes to entry hung a closed sign due to weather. I guess me and the other 6 people lined up have to find a fair weather winery. Just plain poor. I was there. Other patrons there. Staff there. WTF. Prudence, good taste, customer service and just plain common sense dictate to let the people standing at door taste. Maybe leave the sign up for those coming or putt a warning on web site. Ive never understood owners of multi million dollar businesss let morons run a cash register mentality. Im out a 70 mile round trip gas and time when I could have been going to Murphys or Lodi tasting.

Yelp
If you want great wines with a historic past, a friendly staff and at a fair price...Nevada City Winery is the spot. Go, enjoy. Group or by yourself, You'll leave Wanting to share the experience again.

Yelp
We came to this winery about one and a half weeks ago while we were camping in Nevada City and we just loved it here! Teri (think that's how she spelled it) was so nice to all 9 of us! We sat outside tasting amazing wine for about 2 hours! Very generous pours, great wines! We felt like we were at a friends house while we were there, very nice place.
google avatar

Yelp
We had our rehearsal dinner at Nevada City Winery and it was a great experience. The staff was very helpful and accommodating throughout the planning and on the night of the dinner. Their wines were delicious, we especially liked the Grenache and their reds! And the space inside is very fun with a great atmosphere. Highly recommend stopping in for a tasting and a bottle or two if you are in the Nevada City area!
google avatar

Tom W.

Yelp
The wine was great and try the goat cheese it is fabulous. They have a nice tasting room with a beautiful deck off the back. Teri was very friendly and took great care of us.

Yelp
Beautiful atmosphere, very knowledgeable and friendly staff, huge variety of wines. I like that you can buy wine by the glass and enjoy it while sitting outside on their gorgeous back patio. Nice gift shop with very reasonable prices, too! We didn't realize they offer complimentary tasting with purchase - there were two of us, and we had each bought the six tastes for $5, and it ended up that both tastings were free with my purchase of just one bottle of wine! What a nice surprise. I also like that they have 25% off 6 bottles or more. The Solaire, which is a Mediterranean Blend, ended up being our favorite. Enjoyed our visit, will be back again to pick up more Solaire.

Brittany H.

Yelp
Great wine flights right in downtown Nevada City. The people who work there were really nice and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was great!
google avatar

Rolf S.

Yelp
Friendliest, least assuming most competent staff you'll find in Nevada City, backed up be some incredible wines. Ok, so I'm biased. I worked at NCW for two months as a winemaker's assistant, helping to make some of the wines that I am sure people are drinking right now. The tasting room is your standard tasting room/giftshop with wine library, but the real fun happens downstairs. All of their wine is created on the premises from local grapes in some truly amazing machinery. If you go during the day, and ask Very Nicely, you might get a tour of the winery downstairs.
google avatar

Nina A.

Yelp
This place is wonderful. Chris is amazing and wines are so great. Ambiance is nice. Tasting is affordable, even if you don't check in! They have a great little shop to buy things too- which is affordable as well!
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and more importantly a really nice place to have a glass or share a bottle of excellent wine. Prices are reasonable and the selection of wine and appetizers is broad. Service is top notch.
google avatar

Brittany D.

Yelp
This is a cozy winery and has a lot of knick knacks and wine related items inside. There are these cool window seats and a back room with a fireplace. I am not a wine drinker but my family are wine drinkers and they enjoyed a glass and purchased some wine. We got a nice group photo and had fun in there!
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
If you check in on Yelp, you get a free tasting! Large tasting room room with a nice seating area and outdoor seating as well. They have a large variety of reds: sangiovese, red blend, petite verdot, Grenache, syrahs. Really enjoyed the wines and our server Andrea was a delight, filling us in on some Nevada City culture. She also sent us to an awesome ice cream shop, Treats, nearby. Make sure to stop if you're in the area.

Frank P.

Yelp
Amazing Barbara! Reviewing the past year and preparing for the new one! Come on by and taste some amazing wine right downtown Nevada City. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc is also very exceptionally good. But the Barbera has complex aromas of plum, mocha, cola and spice. Very good!

Paula D.

Yelp
This is the best and longest running tasting room in Nevada County. The wine is excellent It is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the day.
google avatar

Catherine O.

Yelp
Large tasting room with lots to choose from if you're into tasting. No outrageous bottle prices here, just great wine served by friendly, knowledgeable staff. Awesome back patio, overall a great experience. Oh, and they serve local cheeses from down the street!

Kathy M.

Yelp
Couldn't taste the Barbera, all their gold medal winners were sold out. By tasting their other available wines I can taste why. Delicious! Knowledgeable staff.
google avatar

Dennis K.

Yelp
Carla was very knowledgeable and fun. Played great music. Wines are great. Full menu to taste. It was packed. Lots of interest from public

Jaime M.

Yelp
Loved the merlot, loved the service! Teri was amazing! Dog friendly on the patio. Definitely worth walking off the main strip!!!
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
So there's this wine pourer from Argentina. We walked in and she swoons "Oh, you two, I remember you from last year!" and lays out the glasses and starts pouring white for him and red for me. We had not been there in a year! We had only been their once before. Needless to say the 5 stars are for the customer service. The wine itself is great. I like non-pretentious, full bodied wines and NCW definitely serves that up. Do make it a visit when you are in town.
google avatar

Becky C.

Yelp
I have no idea how people like it here. The woman was incredibly rude when we came in for a tasting. She did not talk to us at all in fact she spent her time complaining to another customer about tourists. She did not ask what we liked or did not like. she made no recommendations. If i want to pick out my own wine and be ignored i go to a liquor store not a winery. We came in here ready to spend money. We left before we had even tasted all the wines we paid for. Not a friendly environment. Started our vacation off in Nevada city realizing businesses here are rude and pretentious.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
WOO HOO!!! I am a big fan of NC Winery. Awesome wines, that you can find at local stores, or go directly to the source to buy at your heart's content. Never had a bad experience wine tasting here, always friendly. Be nice, and if they like you, ask about the wine tour. They take you downstairs and show you the fermenters and where the wine is stored and talk through the process. I wish I could remember that guy's name who took us on our tour- he was awesome. Go for their Cabernets and our whole extended family has fallen in love with their Gewurztraminer- nothing like that and peach cobbler in the summer. Goes very well with seafood also.
google avatar

Katie R.

Yelp
Updating with a new review because I had an amazing experience today. I brought my in laws with me for the day and decided to make a stop so they could do a tasting too. Very nice service, great explanations about the different types of wine, and both ladies were extremely friendly. I'll definitely be recommending this place to everyone new to the area. P.S. We left with two bottles of Zinfandel and a bottle of Alpenglow. Very, very good wines.
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
Love Carla!!!!! Had a great time hanging and learning about wine on a super busy day!
google avatar

DanKathy H.

Yelp
Carla was a friendly tasting room host!! My daughter and I had so much fun tasting and talking with her. The wines here are wonderful, you won't be disappointed!

Cait M.

Yelp
Excellent wine @ Nevada City Winery! Consistent and delicious reds. Can't wait to come back. The 2015 Zinfandel was simply amazing!
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
We have stopped here twice now. Bay Arean's wouldn't even know about this great wine, but we know about it because in Reno at the Trader Joe's they sell the Rough and Ready Red, which is a great $12 a bottle red. Apparently they sell this one at Draegers here in Menlo Park and Burlingame but it's not a well known wine which I guess is a good thing because it's not over commercialized. Anyhow, we really love thier reds, the Cab Franc has won all kinds of awards. We tried the Chardonnay and bought a bottle for my mom and were very dissappointed that the bottle we bought tasted nothing like what we tasted in the tasting room. But I'll only knock off one star for that. As for the tasting room, 6 free tastes, heavy pours, knowledgable staff, good times!
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
I know this is totally going against the rest of the reviews, but there were several things that turned me off about Nevada City Winery. It makes me sad that I was so disappointed, because I want to give as much love as I can to local businesses, especially if that business is from my hometown. But I really can't go against my better judgement, so here it is: There were quite a few people at the tasting bar already, which was fine because it was pretty big. You are allowed 6 free tastes, which was the perfect amount for me. However, they really have no way for them to keep track of how many you have actually tasted. They have quite a few whites, one blush, several reds, and a dessert wine. So why am I giving NC Winery only 3 stars? Mostly because of lack of service. The people who were there before us slowly left, but service did not get any faster. We waited a long time between each pour. And one of the times, he only gave a taste to two of us, leaving the other two without wine. Finally, when we were the only people left, we got the pourer's undivided attention.

Josh H.

Yelp
Best winery around for amazing wine and friendly knowledgeable staff. The tasting room is wonderful for a relaxing afternoon adventure. The wine club is reasonably priced and they deliver to your door.
google avatar

Nic R.

Yelp
Wines are decent but it's $8 for 5 pours and they don't comp your tasting fee if you buy a bottle. Even the super pretentious Napa wineries follow that unwritten rule.
google avatar

Ernesto B.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Very good price tasting fee. We were helped in finding the best wines that fit our palate and preferred tastes. Nice ambiance. We will definitely be going back.

Megan M.

Yelp
I would have checked in for the free taste, but the cell service is min. I was surprised that after purchasing 13 bottles of wine that our tasting wasn't complementary. It was additionally surprising how many dogs were in the tasting area. I was being sniffed by two pit bulls for the majority of our tasting. Obviously we like the wine, and we usually like tasting there. This was a new experience, for a place we've loved.

Jessica B.

Yelp
Was genuinely impressed with the wines I tasted, all red except for the brut rosé to start. Great staff, very nice, attentive and knowledgeable. Will definitely come again.
google avatar

Caren H.

Yelp
We attended a wedding in early June and Nevada City Winery provided the rehearsal dinner venue. The family provided the pizza and salad but the Winery provided the wine and it was delicious! There was a very cute deck for outside seating that was just perfect! The women behind the bar were nice, polite and very professional! This place is so darn cute! Very clean and located very conveniently in the center of town. The perfect place to hold a rehearsal dinner, just perfect!

Yelp
This is what wineries should be like. Every time I come here I walk away with a case at least becuase I can't help myself. The lsit of wines is amazing. They have a good 25 wines that they have available and the reason for this is they sharecrop and work with a lot of local vineyards to rpoduce the wines. This has made for some fabulous wines I have taken home. Their rough and ready red happens to be one of my favorite wines to open on a whim. Non pretentious, good pour sizes, grat ambiance, warm and inviting. I love this place! the fact that you can sit out on the back patio and shoot the shit with the various winemakers is amazing fun. Currently I have their rough and ready red sitting in frontof me along with various other bottles of their late harvest zin. (an wonderfully decadant desert wine!) NOtes on some of their other wines are below. Barberra~ what I loved about this wine wa the fact that when I drink a barberra I always think to myself how much cranberry do i taste in this and how much do I want turkey. A higher score makes me bring it home to thanksgiving. This barberra has a beautiful nose and follow with a bold fruity finish imo. Grenache~for thoe white drinker that hate the tannins that make red wine too harsh for them they will love this one. I love the fact that it tastes so jammy but its not a sweet dessert wine taste. Malbec~ I love that they do a pure! This tasted like oakey musky cherries which I happen to love. The earthiness of this wine made me want to eat a heavy red meat with a mushroom and red wine sauce. Pertit verdot~ just yummy. I will admit by the time I got down to this one ( as i told myself in my tasting notes) I was getting a bit tipsy so i couldnt quite trust myself as to really making a solid judgment on this wine but I found it light and refreshing with a slight fruitness and a smoother finish thatn I expected.... but like I said take it was a grain of salt as their pours are generous and I was about 12 pours in at this point! Their whites are commendable as well, and they do a variety of blends. Overall this winery is only a 2 hour drive from the bay area and it is well worth it for an adventerous afternoon.
