The Best Restaurants on Belmont Street in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Long walks to Mt. Tabor Park necessitate a visit to Never Coffee; the roaster’s playful branding, reliable baristas, and inviting interior attract passersby who may not have initially been in the mood for a coffee to begin with. It’s standard to see the line to entry backed up any time of the day without cause, whether it’s a casual Wednesday afternoon or a Sunday morning rush hour, as regulars patiently wait to grab inventive drinks with Never’s house-made syrups. Creations like the Rich Kid come with rose water, saffron, and cardamom, while the Midnight Oil gets flavored with fennel seed, star anise, and black licorice, offering subtly sweet and aromatic touches to milk drinks." - Katrina Yentch

21 Distinctive Portland Cafes That Roast Their Own Coffee

"Never Coffee Lab is a colorful brand with two locations, downtown and on Southeast Belmont. The playful pastel-colored designs within Never’s cafe spaces are a tasteful pairing to its clean white walls, especially when juxtaposed with one of Portland’s endless-feeling gray days. Patrons will try to decide between inventive lattes flavored with ingredients like Cascade hops, saffron, and fennel seed, which come in stylish handmade ceramics or bottled to go with oat milk in tasteful amber glasses." - Katrina Yentch, Nathan Williams

14 Best Coffee Shops in Portland, OR | Condé Nast Traveler

"Tiny and bright, with aqua tiles on the floor, a Matisse Jazz–type mural on the back wall, and colorful bags of coffee beans, Sunnyside's Never is, well, never not vibrant. The creative lattes here are a step above, too. Everything from the Holy Grail (with turmeric, ginger, and lots of other goodies) to the Oregon (with cascade hops, dulce de leche, and Jacobsen sea salt) is divine. Best of all, drinks are served in colorful, locally made ceramic mugs." - Hannah Wallace

Google
So cute & teeny it almost feels like you're visiting a friend's apartment for coffee. Despite the tiny size, it's airy, welcoming & inviting, a stones throw from Belmont Bite food pod & Movie Madness (for a 90s throwback double date). Menu is small, but all the house specials are expertly crafted & they even have espresso extract bottles that you can take home to enjoy in your own kitchen. Really friendly baristas who are happy to guide you toward the right treats & beverages. Top notch pastries & other coffee pairings. Cool art on the walls as well!

Google
This place is a great little cafe! I love the specialty coffees! I had a shot of espresso, it came with a side car which was AWESOME! But the shot itself was horrible. It might've been a fluke with how it was pulled and my bad luck was I was served a bad shot. Not the best espresso but it's a great coffee shop! Definitely coming back:)

Paula M

Google
Delicious lattes with such creative flavors! I can recommend the midnight oil, the seasonal strawberry, hunny, and the yuzu and burnt salt. The baristas were very nice and the walls are really nicely decorated!

Abbie Lu

Google
This is a great coffee shop with house made artisan flavors. I tried the Holy Grail and it was very good, but I want to try them all. I loved the shop it was fun and friendly. They didn't have any sugar free flavors but they had all the dairy alternative milks. I will be back to try new interesting flavors. I recommend.

Brian McCoy

Google
Great specialty latte flavors, cool space and fun colorful designs - local artists often being featured. Recent price increase has the lattes coming in ~10 bucks if you go with an alt milk and tip so certainly a decent bit more expensive than local competitors. We live within walking distance and come in once a month as a special lil treat.

Google
We loved Never coffee so much that we drove all the way across town just to try the other location. This place is somewhere truly special, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Kog

Google
Coffee here is extra unique! Flavor combinations are amazingly creative but all work well together. A must try coffee experience. One of my favorites is the Midnight Oil!

Rachel Gray

Google
I love the fun matcha flavors they bring to their menu every month! I highly suggest trying an iced matcha next time you visit. Also, this is a cute location to meet up with friends or a date and take a stroll, or bring yourself on a little date, bring a book and enjoy the seating outside in the sunshine! ☀️ I love NEVER!

Yelp
Never is such a fun coffee spot for some very creative lattes! I love getting the rich kid which I believe is a cardamom rose water saffron latte. A 12oz is $7 which is a lot but it's very good. I also purchased a bag of beans to try as well. The space is small but mighty. Good amounts of seating inside and outside. Parking is free and plentiful. The staff is friendly and very fast. I've been here a handful of times and I usually come when I want to get out on a morning to get a coffee somewhere special by myself.

Yelp
Visited Portland for the holiday and Never was close to my stay. Also in such a cute area with food trucks and Tabor Bread nearby! But back to Never - They have tons of signature lattes and seasonal drinks. During my trip I had the Oregon (iced and hot even though it was in the 90s) and Rich Kid iced. Both were delicious. I think the hot Oregon was my fave so it was rough having the weather not line up w a cozy latte... I've seen mixed reviews on this but I had a good experience with staff - they gave me a discount on my sweater purchase when they noticed it had coffee stains on it. Also they didn't judge me when I bought two coffees for myself lol. Speaking of merch, they have such cute marketing! Definitely coming back next time I'm in Portland!

Yelp
They discriminated against me as a disabled person and were incredibly rude to me and refused service. They lied and said I put my service dog on the counter, which I did not do and would never do. They also were talking about me and saying disparaging things, which a neighbor overheard. Incredibly unprofessional, discriminatory practices. ALSO, I wrote about this previously and the review was posted-- somehow it was removed??? Are they paying-off yelp to get their bad reviews taken-down? For anyone interested in researching, a national coffee magazine wrote an article about how they are a discriminatory against people of color. Do some digging-- you'll find it. Do not give this establishment your money. They are awful, lying, snobby and discriminatory and don't even have good coffee. ALSO! Expensive!

Yelp
Very stylish little space with some very special speciality coffee drinks. They don't offer much in the way of food (only a few pastries that run out), and not much space for seating indoors. But if you're only looking for a good grab and go coffee, definitely check this place out.

Zac R.

Yelp
This place is disgusting. Aggressive and pompous staff. Everyone I know avoids this place like the plague but I for whatever reason kept going here. Please, avoid it for your life. Also the coffee is trash

Mark P.

Yelp
Have had just the worst encounters with staff here. Everyone is so rude. One time the barista told me I didn't tip her enough. They sit around with absurd attitudes, take an hour to attend to you, then demand you tip them for their horrible coffee. How is this place still in business? Or these people with their jobs? Once, I met the manager--tall skinny guy--and he could not have been ruder. Please, if you are at the top of this management, reconsider the people you've staffed this business with. And if you are reading this, do not go to Never Coffee.

Yelp
overall: 4/5 drink: 4/5 service: 4/5 ambiance: 5/5 i came in the summer of the last year, and the vibes were great! the baristas were super kind and charismatic, which made our experience all the better. i love the interior- all the colors with the greens and cool tones are beautiful, but there is no seating inside the cafe, so it seems more of a grab and go situation, or grab and go sit outside in the summer situation. my friend and i ordered the Oregon and the Rich Kid! i forget which one i got, but i tried both and remembered liking the Rich Kid more, as the coffee flavor was strong and there seemed to be a lot of ingredient thrown in to the drink that makes this cafe unique and the drink yummy! coffee flavor wise, it's not too strong, but i could taste hints of the roast along the other flavors used within the drink. i think it's all personal preference as to whether or not you like the drink, as my friend did not think there was enough coffee taste and thought the drinks were too light. however, i do recommend checking out this place in the summer! good vibes, good people, and yummy drinks.

Yelp
I was in Portland for the first time and my friend was showing all the coffee stops since she had lived here before. When we arrived it was moderately busy. We arrived around brunch time on a weekday. Whenever I try a new coffee shop my go-to is a simple latte and almond milk. I feel this is the best way to really taste their espresso and I thought the drink was delicious! After sipped my drink my friend and I sat outside at one of the tables. It was a really nice day to enjoy our brew and catch up. It was nice to see all the pups walk by and say hello too. I had a great experience here and would come back!
google avatar

Ramandeep R.

Yelp
The cashier seemed like she had an attitude. Didn't really greet her customers. The coffee was bitter. Seems like it would be a cute spot to enjoy coffee but I was just disappointed. The four star rating is too high and inaccurate in my opinion.

Marissa H.

Yelp
Is the coffee solid? Yes. Are the vibes good? Yes. Do they seem to exclusively hire baristas that are hot but mean? Also yes.
google avatar

Yelp
Never Coffee is a colorful coffee shop known for its unique signature drinks: -the hug (spicy cacao, smoked chilies, cinnamon) -the Oregon (hops, dulce de leche, sea salt) -the holy grail (honey, sea salt, turmeric) -the rich kid (rose water, saffron, cardamom) -the midnight oil (licorice, fennel, star anise) Each of these has a corresponding cup (black for midnight oil, green for the Oregon, for example) if you are drinking it in-shop. There isn't a lot of seating to do so, but some counter spots and a few outdoor tables will do. The ceramics are also for sale - I bought one of my favorite coffee mugs here. I've tried a few of the signature drinks and have enjoyed the ones I thought I would based on the tasting notes. If none are your speed, they can make your regular coffee drinks (americano, latte, mocha, etc). However, with the relatively high price and the limited seating, Never is a novelty I enjoy infrequently.

Yelp
Love this location of never coffee. We were in the neighborhood and got some pastries and coffee and it was great! The pastries were amazing (black sesame banana bread, miso cookie, squash danish and cherry scone) and the coffee is always good. The ppl were super nice and a much better experience than the location downtown. Have come back many times and will continue too!
google avatar

Keith R.

Yelp
Their coffee was super velvety and they were busy but attentive. I would go back but my friend found their coffee to be average. I thought otherwise. The guy at the register was super friendly and genuine. Great service.
google avatar

Yelp
What a fun cafe to explore coffee. A choice of 6 different blends. Medium roast across the board. One decaf. Inside is clean and polished. Samples of coffee lay in a basket. Syrups to mix with your coffee. Cups to hold your brew. Much to take in , so I ordered a house with cream . Didn't ask which blend I got, but it tasted good. Purchase the "OH" blend of coffee. 12 ounces for a twenty. I did not watch how they brewed my coffee. Could be pour over. So my task was to take home whole bean coffee , brew in my auto drip, and enjoy. So far, I'm happy with the coffee I chose.

Cecelia W.

Yelp
Literally just 3 stars Nothing crazy just trendy. The people at the counter seemed to think they were too cool to really care (service was confusing and kind of weird). I'm usually a tipper, but here service i couldn't bring myself to. drip coffee wasn't that great the chai latte at least was good.
google avatar

Marilyn C.

Yelp
What a cozy space. Very hipster with simple decor. Delicious coffee & ice chai (not sweet). The art around the space was interesting & fun. Great barista service (not so much on cell-service since it on a basement "underground feel" brick building)
google avatar

Maddy M.

Yelp
Great coffee shop with an awesome aesthetic. It's a pretty small shop, with two baristas working behind the counter. The shop is filled with lush green plants, original art, and merch. I ordered a dirty chai latte with almond milk. It had the perfect amount of spice I would expect from a chai latte, and the espresso was STRONG! Usually when I order a dirty chai I expect it to taste more like a regular latte with a hint of chai flavor. But this was the perfect marriage of chai tea and espresso, both flavors were bold yet perfectly balanced. I gave Never Coffee four stars because the customer service wasn't there for me. I walked in and said hello before either barista acknowledged me. It wasn't a very warm and welcoming vibe in there, but more of like get in and get out. They do have picnic tables on the sidewalk for outside seating if you wanted a place to sit and sip.
google avatar

Jesse S.

Yelp
Great coffee shop. The barista went above and beyond trying to find me ingredients for something they serve only in DT location (I didn't know). He couldn't find one syrup so I got "Oregon" latte instead. It has hops, dulce de leche and sea salt. It was a very unique-tasting beverage.
google avatar

Joseph K.

Yelp
Good coffee and vibes. Was just swinging through on the way to the airport back home. Need a drink? Don't even think.
google avatar

Lucy M.

Yelp
Pretty good coffee, I had the yazu sea salt? It was something I have never tasted and I love to taste new tastes. The place was a nice place to study as well!
google avatar

Ashley O.

Yelp
I was excited to try this shop and their coffee out. I was expecting a bold flavor but honestly, was just a bit bitter. I got the shaken espresso and I liked that better than the specialty coffee my boyfriend got. It was trendy but not quite making the mark in some way that I can't pinpoint. The staff were less than friendly, and there wasn't anywhere to sit with the weather doing Oregon things.
google avatar

Iain M.

Yelp
The parking is non-existent except by good karma, but the coffee and service are exceptional. Seating is outdoors, most comfortable in your own vehicle. Highly recommended for two or more people, so one can drive around the block a couple of times, rather than park.
google avatar

Lionel M.

Yelp
Wonderful coffee shop. Everyone is so friendly & the coffee is fine af. I haven't had their regular lattes but their specialty ones are truly special. My favorites are the Oregon, holy grail, and rich kid (in that order). $8 IS expensive for coffee but if you're going to treat yourself once in a while this is 100% worth it.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
We found this place just visiting Portland and ended up here everyday. They have such interesting and unique flavors. My favorites were the Rich Kid and the Holy Grail. This is my favorite coffee shop I've found in all my travels!
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
What a colorful, vibrant and friendly coffee joint! They sell thick coffee mugs, really unique seasonal coffee which is so crazy as I chose the midnight oil with a taste of black licorice. I know, sounds yucky, but I love licorice all-sorts and this tastes great and sweet. Seriously, try it! The atmosphere and ambiance inside is relaxing and a great hangout. Service was exceptionally kind.
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
Best coffee in Portland! The signature drinks are all so good, I have tired them all and can't choose a favorite! If you are visiting Portland, you have to stop here during your trip!
google avatar

Nich A.

Yelp
Was in town by myself for a day and decided to try three independent coffee places which all had stellar ratings. The other two were fine. I almost didn't order here when the owner said they were closing (and so I couldn't hang in the lobby) - only to go orders. Yelp had their hours listed incorrectly and it was 30 degrees out so I was actually looking for a place to hang and almost decided to bail and get coffee elsewhere that was open. Um... that would have been a huge mistake! I had The Visit and if you like coffee and orange... it is perfection in a cup. If I lived closer I would be back for it constantly. As it is I will add it to my short list for Portland trips along with Friend Egg I'm In Love. Look forward to trying their other specialty coffees but The Visit... is ridiculously great. Super friendly barista too. Thanks!
google avatar

Klint K.

Yelp
Coffee was hot, but below gas station quality. Hard to recommend in a place where you can also find a 7-11.
google avatar

Chelsea T.

Yelp
Never coffee is an absolute favorite. Always great service, friendly people, and amazing coffee. My favorite is the Oregon latte. I drive pretty far out of my way for a cup of never.
google avatar

Diego W.

Yelp
Friendly service. Nice spot, cozy picnic table outside. As for the coffee, it's THAT good. My go to is a simple but yet classic iced americano for those sunny living days.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
An enjoyable americano, cute spot. Just stopped for a cup to go. Would have stuck around if they had snacks.
google avatar

Sean K.

Yelp
I actually firstly discovered this coffee shop via TikTok. There are many trending coffee shop with good branding and marketing but can't do flavored latte or chai well. I was actually worried that Never Coffee would be one of them. Turned out, no, far from it! They got coffee, chai, branding, marketing all right. We ordered the Rich Kids latte and a cup of chai. Really enjoyed the spice combination in the Rich Kids! And the chai is not bland at all - it got the spice kicks right. I'd def come back.
google avatar

Delilah S.

Yelp
went out of my way to try this place and the never sign should have been my sign not to go in. everyone here is the same; copy & paste aesthetics with middle school hand drawn plant tattoos and coffee bags. customer service sucked. there were two baristas behind bar chit chatting about some guy they know... essentially ignoring customers. i was told there was no vanilla syrup and that i can choose from the weirdest array of ingredient combinations that i have ever seen... keep portland weird i guess! none of them sounded appealing so i opted out of trying any. the person i was with got a drip coffee that was not roasted to perfection, in fact, a lot more watery than we're used to. overall, would not recommend. never coming back! lol
google avatar

Manuel V.

Yelp
Never going here again. For some reason the quality of this place has gone down so crazy in a year we used to go every day and haven't been in a long time we decided to give it another chance today and the evil hipsters that work here suck at making a damn iced coffee I watched this weirdo pour sink water into a cup with a tiny bit of oatmilk with NO ICE then pour espresso into it and put like 8 pieces of ice in my damn cup to then only pour out the coffee and put more ice this barista gave me watered down oat milk with ice what the f. Who's training y'all cus for 6 bucks a coffee y'all are TRASH.READ THAT AGAIN
google avatar

Sharon Y.

Yelp
My go-to if I want to be sure that my coffee is going to be great consistently nice staff too!
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
Great coffee Cool vibes A little pricey 4/5 Stop in on your walk to mount tabor, great little place and so cute!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Most drips aren't noteworthy but their's is, the Ethiopian blend that I just got taste like blueberries which I perfect for a sweet toothed coffee drinker like myself. 5 stars.
google avatar

Shane S.

Yelp
A delightful shop in a cool neighborhood to people watch. The staff is friendly and engaging--willing to answer all questions. Their whole bean roast options are interesting and delicious. The OH! roast is my pick. The drink menu has something for everyone!
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
Last month on a road trip from Colorado to Oregon my wife and I stopped at Never Coffee after hearing good reviews online! We walked around the area for a bit and decided to go get a coffee from here. We walked in and immediately loved the interior design and how friendly the person working was! I got an iced vanilla latte and it was great! We couldn't stay long since they were closing about 30 minutes after we got there, but I definitely recommend going to visit Never Coffee, it was a lovely experience and we loved seeing the trees from inside! Next time we're in Portland, we're definitely going back!
google avatar

Kritsana K.

Yelp
I ordered Iced-Oregon and its nice. I also ordered Iced-Americano but its ok only for me. Staff are so nice and friendly. If you love drinking coffee i recommend you to go try all the special drinks!
google avatar

Austin D.

Yelp
Great coffee horrible service. Friend and I went in today and the barista at the register was rude even on for a non customer service interaction. If I had encountered this person outside of a cafe setting I would have left feeling like they were not a nice human being. My friend and I both have worked plenty of customer service and showing basic niceness and dignity is not difficult especially when it's your one job that day (the other employee we didn't interact with was making the coffee).

Erica G.

Yelp
Tasty coffee and chai and lots of outdoor seating. Service was sweet and swift. Yummy
google avatar

Trisha C.

Yelp
Came here early morning on a weekday. It was my first time coming here. I don't like coffee, but I was intrigued by their special drinks. Yes, they are NC's most expensive drinks, but I saw the unusual combination of ingredients and just had to try one! Based on the barista's suggestion, I got its Holy Grail, which contained tumeric, ginger, sea salt, tellicherry pepper, and a lot more! The combination of sea salt and pepper provided a very nice after taste, and I absolutely loved it. The place was opened three years ago, and they just recently opened another one in Portland. The place is colorfully decorated, both on the wall and on their stands. Their display of muffins and other baked goods were nicely displayed. There are about 4 tables with two small stools for each table. There's one large picnic table right outside the door. Will definitely come here again!
google avatar

Fraya S.

Yelp
Cute and sleek little place! I had latte and another one in my group ordered Oregon. Loved the latte! Smooth milky coffee. Oregon tastes like cake, in a good way. Plus, the whole place is very aesthetically pleasing for your gram if that is what you come here for. The have another store in downtown Portland, but this is the only location I have ever gone to.

Connor N.

Yelp
DO NOT order the "Pool Side". Worst beverage I have ever consumed in my life and I lived in a frat for 4 years. Whoever thought lime and coffee together would be a good idea, obviously didn't try their own drink.
google avatar

Jesse C.

Yelp
After grabbing lunch at the food carts (Bite on Belmont) around the corner, I needed a little afternoon pick-me-up to get me through the rest of the day, so I decided to give this place a try. The coffee shop is really cute and tiny. It is well lit and not dark/gloomy inside (like some cafes). The place looks very clean and simple. They have a few tables inside and outside for those who want to enjoy a cup of coffee while getting some work done. Their menu is also very simple, which is not a bad thing. They offer the basics (latte, macchiato, mocha, etc.) along with a few of their own specialty drinks. These specialty drinks come in one-size only (12 oz) with two shots of espresso. These drinks are created with syrups that are made in-house. I tried two of their speciality drinks: The Oregon- very tasty, caramelly, but not overwhelmingly sweet. The Holy Grail- very different, floral, but refreshing. The only downside is that these specialty drinks are $6 for 12 oz..
google avatar

Rose G.

Yelp
Great branding and aesthetic. Bad coffee and service. Have been here 3 times now. The drinks are simply...bad. If you get any sort of mocha, latte, or chai latte, expect it to be all milk and have barely any taste. The barista's are not friendly. I get it, I've been a cashier and server, and will have a period of low energy , but their energy was simply unwelcoming. Unfortunately, I don't think this place is going anywhere soon because their aesthetic is so cute that people notice the storefront and want to grab a coffee here. But I'm here to warn you that you'll most likely be disappointed!
google avatar

Thuy N.

Yelp
The gal barista was super nice! Small little place to stop in and get a cup of joe or so. Definitely not for big groups to sit inside. When weather is nice there is seating outside. And plant decor on point! Makes ya feel at home! I ordered the chai latte over ice! Next time I have to try the hot chai. :)
google avatar

Jay Y.

Yelp
We ordered the rich kid and it didn't taste good. They refused to exchange the drink and charged us for a brand new drink. The price of the drink already is pretty pricey now paying for it twice feels like an absolute rip off!
google avatar

Maeve M.

Yelp
do i invariably squeeze $9 out of my pocket every time i purchase coffee from this place? yes. is it worth it? not sure but i keep doing it.
