Downtown Russian Restaurant Nevski Is Serving Up Cheese Boats | Eater Montreal

"Taking a fast-casual, lunch-friendly approach for the downtown crowd, I found Nevski’s short, hearty menu centers on dumplings and Adjarian khachapuri alongside a few soups, house plates and cocktails. There are three dumpling options: smaller meat-filled beef–pork–veal pelmeni with tarragon sauce; a salmon–crème fraîche pelmeni with lemon sour cream; and classic potato–onion vareniki served with bacon and sour cream. The khachapuri arrive in the Adjarian, boat-shaped format—cheese-filled and topped with a runny egg—and are offered plain or with spinach, smoked sausage, or Russian meatballs; the cheesy, simple perfection of khachapuri makes it a rare find in Montreal. The menu is rounded out by soups (including borscht), a beef-and-mushroom stroganoff poutine, a Russian-style smoked-sausage hot dog, and pishki (Russian doughnuts) rolled in cinnamon sugar for dessert. Prices top out at $14, and the space—decked out with Soviet kitsch—also makes it a novel spot for after-work cocktails during the 5 à 7. It’s open at 1228 Stanley from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday, 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, and 5:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday." - Tim Forster

A little pricy for the portion size but all good ingredients and unique recipes make the experience worth it. They let me stay the whole shift from start to finish without bothering me. They were super polite and good humoured even after I brought up the high price point. To me that shows this is a good business. They really value their customers enough to not be dismissive or angry about criticism.

Definitely a hidden gem. Food was spectacular from start to finish. Get yourself a cheese boat and mini Kamchatkas. And the honey cake also a sweet finish.

Really cool restaurant. Very nice vibe with good songs in Russian. Their cocktails are delicious. I really enjoyed the morse code. The servers were attentive, kind and efficient. I will definitely be returning. The food looked delicious.

The food is authentic Russian 🪆 food and the service is great. Most of the staff actually speak Russian and are super nice 👍🙂. I would recommend to check their social media feed and go for a special event. We were there for "Maslinitsa" which is a special holiday and they serve delicious 🤤 crapes 🥞 🍯 I don't usually even like sweets but it was delicious. We also had the borscht which was ok, the pelmeni 🥟 with 🍄 were delicious and the drinks 🍻🍷 🍸 were very original as well. Over all great experience well worth checking out. Only negative is that we were seating all the way in the back and it was super hot in the winter ❄️☃️ time as I guess people near the entrance must feel a breese. The live music was absolutely great. 🎶 🎷. *The entrance is not easy to find it's actually on the little side street between King 👑 and Queen streets.

Was excited to have Russian and Georgian food again. However, this place was a bit of a disappointment. We arrived and were told that we needed to order quickly as they were having a private event at 930pm, which was lots of time since we arrived at 830pm. However, the server took forever and we were clearly forgotten. we were finally able to flag down someone and placed our order. The mushroom dumplings and the chicken adjika dumplings were good but only lukewarm. The tefteli meatball cheese boat / khachapuri was a fraction of the size of what you see in their Instagram posts with only 3 meatballs and the cheese was still hard and not fully melted. You can see in the video the egg is runny but the cheese is hard and it was difficult to dip the bread as instructed on their menu on how to eat! The donuts were also hard and not sweet enough as a dessert. It was all ok and tasty but because everything wasn’t hot, it didn’t seem fresh.

Yelp
Great service, indoor parking available. Delicious borscht. Very good dumplings. Crowded with a younger crowd. Many Russians were having cocktails and upon asking they were enjoying them

Yelp
Nice food, good for sharing. Tasty, but some of the portions are quite small such as the eggplant dish. Highlights include the cheeseboat and the medovik (honey and condensed milk layered cake - not pictured). Service is very friendly, the ambiance is a bit loud (feels a bit more like a bar). Very cute interior though!

Yelp
Nevski was great! I had it on my list as a top place to visit when my friends and I went to Montréal for vacation, but I almost didn't make it. I'm so glad we adventured out on our last night in town and had dinner here. It lived up to the hype in my head. I am a Russia & Eastern Europe nerd. I like a lot of the cultures, the cuisines, and the kitschyness of it that can be played up. This bar seemed to be a hidden gem for me. Our server was Daniya and she was very nice and helpful. She mostly left us alone but came around at just the right time to get us anything we needed. And the decor is to die for. It's fun and artsy, moody, and a mix of modern and nostalgia. I would have loved to have purchased some of their merch, but most items seemed to be for men and wouldn't have been very flattering. I hope they will consider getting some more unisex and/or ladies' cuts. The main reason I came was to try the Lamb Pelmeni (Pelmeni L'Agneau) and the Khachapuri (Cheeseboat - Original). Neither dissapointed and my friends really enjoyed trying those dishes. We got a round of drinks and I had the Morse Code (Moskovskaya Vodka, Rose Hips & Berries, Tea, Lemon, Blackcurrant Syrup and Soda), which was really lovely. One my family names is Morse, so I had to! My total was $61.05 CAD (with a tip added), which is about $45 USD. I think that was reasonable for a trip meal with an appetizer (shared), and entree and a signature cocktail at a semi-upscale kind of place.

Yelp
Genuinely one of the best meals I have ever had in my life. I've visited 15 countries and tried all types of food, but this is absolutely in my top 5. My boyfriend and i made reservations 2 days ahead of time on a whim, but what a beautiful mistake. Our server was great and friendly! We ordered the mule pitcher which was delicious! I also ordered the espresso martini which was wonderful. We knew what we wanted ahead of time after looking at the menu at home. We ordered the Pickle and charcuterie board, siberian pelmeni dumplings and the smoked bacon and sausage cheeseboard. We shared each item between each other but both agreed we wished we had one each because they were just that good. We agreed that we needed to try their dessert too, so we ordered the medovik to share. Once again, wish we had a slice of cake each... I'm usually a chocolate only for dessert girl, but this.... this was amazing. We let our server know how happy we were with our meal and their service, that he offered us a round of Polish vodka shots, after i told him my Polish heart was happy with this eastern european find. Please add this to your dinner plans in Montreal! You won't regret it!

Yelp
Nevski did us all right the night that we went. I found the food to be very good, the service was a little disconnected but friendly and thorough. Reservation was respected without an issue. They offer parking close by. Limited for vegetarians but a little something for everyone. I had the dumplings (recommended) and a taste of the borsch soup. Prices were reasonable. I had been wanting to try a Ukranian/Russian restaurant and this fit the bill. It has a lounge feel to it. If you want a hearty dish the poutine is recommended, or the cheeseboats. People at the table ordered drinks and no one had complaints, so I'll take it that the bartender knows what he/she is doing.

Yelp
Cute little Russian eaterie. Apparently it is supposed to be packed all the time but I guess with the war between Russia and Ukraine, people are kinda boycotting this place as it was super empty on a Thursday night. Ordered the tomatoes salad which was super fresh and delicious. The cheeseboat was a bit too heavy for me. Cheeseboat is like a Russian style pizza I would say. I prefer a tomato base sauce rather than cheese as it helps cutting through the grease. Cute place, would go back and try the rest of their menu if I'm downtown.

Yelp
I heard about this restaurant on MTL blog and I'm a huge fan of khachipuri so I had to try it. The decor is very eclectic - so many different types of chairs and tables. We sat at kind of like a 2 person bar table that was behind a gate facing the real bar. It's a fun vibe and feels like a fun place to just hang out. I think most of the food is meant for sharing. The chicken adjika pelemi we had was very tasty. Super stuffed little dumplings with a sauce (they say it's spicy, but it's not really.) Khachapuri was good although some how lighter than the ones I've had before. Nothing wrong with a ton of melted cheese mixed with an egg though! Pickled tomatoes were a surprise MVP, super tasty. Pretty much all the food comes topped with dill, so if for some reason you don't like that make sure you let them know. Cocktails were a bit too sweet for my taste, but it's fun that they have different types of mules and vodkas. Service was friendly and reasonably paced in these post-lockdown times. I would definitely come back again to snack on a cheese boat and some dumplings.

Yelp
I experienced Nevski shortly after visiting Georgia (the country) and what a disappointment it was. Georgian food is amazing, incredible, mind-blowing - Nevski's food is uninspired and heated in the microwave. The Khachapuri is bland and not much more than a mozzarella pizza. The dumpling or equivalent to Khinkalis are basically stuffed pastas you could've bought at Costco. Staff was nice, but I can't figure out why you have to order at the bar? Anyway. Won't go back.

Yelp
I stopped in for lunch, and it was really great. The dumplings were hearty, without being overly dense, and the summer sunset cocktail was incredible. I will definitely be back next time I'm in Montreal.

Yelp
My friends and I tried this Russian restaurant for the first time during our lunch break and lemmmeee tell you: it was AMAZING! You must try it!

Yelp
LOVE! The service is great, the food is delicious and the drinks are to die for! Love love love! We got the bacon and sausage cheese boat as well as the poutine - both were great! My boyfriend and I ate half of our dishes and then swapped so that we could enjoy both. Best decision ever! The drinks were made very well and were a lot more chic than I anticipated they would be. My favorite was the Moscow mule - they let you pour the ginger beer yourself so you can make it as spicy as you want! We also got the Knight of St. Nevski, which had Russian soda and tasted like banana. The Sunset cocktail was grapefruity and was garnished with a little rose bud - cute! Oh and their donuts are Y U M.

Yelp
Nevesky is authentic ex-soviet food in a modern and hipster decor/ambiance. A bit of a small/limited menu but totally worth it
