Discovered such a delicious hidden gem in Chinatown, Brooklyn — an authentic Malaysian spot that truly surprised me in the best way. I ordered the Nasi Lemak and WOW. Total flavor bomb. The rice was fragrant and perfectly cooked in coconut milk with pandan, and every bite had layers of flavor. It came with spicy sambal, crispy anchovies (ikan bilis), roasted peanuts, hard-boiled egg, and fresh cucumber — the balance of savory, spicy, crunchy, and creamy was incredible. The shrimp lo mein with veggies was absolutely delicious, and the chicken satay skewers with curry sauce on the side tied everything together perfectly. Comfort food at its finest — especially on a cold, rainy night. Service was great — genuinely kind and sweet — and everything was reasonably priced. Definitely recommend if you’re looking to try something flavorful and authentic. I’ll 100% be back.

Cozy small restaurant that has a long history of serving excellent food to its local community. My friends have eaten here since they were little kids eating here on a school trip and now they are still eating here in their 20s. Outside of their significance to the local community, the food is incredibly delicious. Each dish is seasoned well and has a smoky wok flavor. The customer service is also very good and we received our dishes fast.

Overall a solid 3 on food. 4 on service - super friendly and a 2.5 on aesthetic… it has seen its days and needs some updating. Very tight space, sticky table and could be cleaner. Food wise, some solid items including the taro nest (surong burong), satay chicken, lady fingers with shrimp… and the morning glory. The Hainan chicken could be smoother, the satay beef less chewy… would skip on the sautéed tofu, stingray and pineapple fried rice.. the roti was also not good. But I can see their regulars enjoy their dinners here bc of the family friendly atmosphere. If you’re in the area, a good spot for dinner.

New Belacan Restaurant in Brooklyn serves traditional Malaysian food. I started off with Roti Canai as appetizer. I wish the size was bigger. Then with Hainanese Chicken which is my favorite dish whenever I dine here. I've been here a few times and I always find their food taste delicious. I went during 6pm for dinner and it wasn't packed. Food came out fast. It is clean inside the restaurant. They have wooden tables. It's a relaxed atmosphere suitable for quick meals or socializing. They definitely have raised up the price.

Super authentic Malaysian food, and quite inexpensive. The Assam laksa was out of this world. The char kway toew has great wok heat. The roti canai could have had more curry. The lobak was tasty, but too salty. The satay beef was good, but all in all the least interesting.

Pretty good but the chicken feet was lacking a little. Otherwise the rest of the food was great. Service was okay, I was sat in a seat where the ceiling was leaking but food also came out pretty quickly. Good for a casual sit down restaurant

Food was delicious and the best Malaysian food I find in NY. We always stop by this restaurant whenever we travel to NY. Staff and the lady owner is very helpful. Try their roti Canai, Oakra, shrimp with Belacan sauce, morning glory veg with Belacan sauce and their butter rice. Hmmm yummy. I have referred a lot of Torontoniana to this place

Wasn’t so impress with the dishes. Satay sauce is served cold. Alamak how la. Malaysians don’t eat sauce cold cold la… marmite pork had a little after taste (probably from baking soda velveting or something).

This is a decent Malaysian restaurant. The service was a bit slow while there wasn't much traffic that day. I ordered a Captain Noodle dish and the food was not bad. I definitely recommend coming here to eat the price and portions are good.

I've been going to New Belacan for so long. I want to say over 8 years for sure. This place is cute and the owners are nice. I usually order: Roti with curry Roti with egg Capitan noodles Flat noodles with the seafood and pork gravy, I forgot the name right now Pad thai Satay chicken and beef with this yummy peanut sauce Fried rice with chicken and salted fish The service is fast and portions are decent sized. I love the wok hay on the fried noodles. It's always been the same! Also the takeout is good too.

Ordered lunch from here a few days ago and waited inside while they prepared my food. The crisp, flaky Roti Canai came with a side of their chicken curry which was SO finger lickin good! My main was Laksa soup with Chicken a flavorful coconut curry based rich broth with noodles and bean sprouts. The curry was a bit milder than expected and I would definitely order it spicy next time. To wash it all down I got some tea with milk which was sweet and perfect. Definitely coming back to try some more of the delicacies they have to offer !

Great service. Our waitress was so kind and accommodating. The curry was very tasty and the fresh lumpia was good. Roti canai is also a great appetizer.

When I entered, there were several parties inside. I ordered the black bean sauce yong tau foo as the lobak was sold out. While waiting, there was a TV showing ABC 7 news. A worker was making satay skewers. Several parties were about to leave. There were several calls incoming to order delivery or takeout. My order took some time to prepare as it needed to be fried. The ingredients are typical at other restaurants I have ordered from.

Authentic Asian food, they have varieties of soup noodle, dried noodle, rice and others. Located at 8th ave, and the store has been open for many many years.

Bought Hainan chicken from this place and found this on the meat. The staff insisted that it's a chicken feather but clearly it's a cockroach leg. They refused to refund the money. I told them I'd report it and they gave my money back. PLEASE DON'T COME!

Came here for lunch to order something quick and easy. With it being in Brooklyn, parking is semi difficult to find. Standard Asian restaurant custom with it being in 8th Avenue of Brooklyn - brought over hot tea for the table which was enjoyable. They do speak English as well as Chinese. It was not crowded when I went and was able to sit anywhere. We ordered the Needle Noodles [stir fried noodle with minced pork]. Although it only has pork in the description, it did come with chicken and shrimp too. Lots of bean sprouts and leeks as well. We also ordered the Roti Telur. It didn't have a description on the menu but it's like an Indian pancake with a curry dipping sauce. The curry was alright, not a ton of flavor but still good for dipping. The only thing I didn't really enjoy was that the pancake had raw red onions in it (cut up). It was deliciously crispy though. We split the meal and was very affordable. Bill came out to $20. It's a quick lunch and it was good as well for the price we paid! Very friendly staff as well.

Belachan Grill offered a wide variety of dishes, each one more enticing than the last. I enjoyed the Nasi Lemak, a fragrant rice dish served with spicy sambal, beef rendang and a boiled egg. It was absolutely delicious and full of flavor. I also tried the Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread served with a side of flavorful curry sauce. The texture of the bread was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My other favorites include Hokkien Mee & Seafood Hotpot Curry & Teh Tarik. Absolutely devine! The owners are exceptional. They checked in to make sure everything was to our liking. They were so friendly and welcoming, making us feel like we were dining with friends rather than in a restaurant. 5 stars to Belachan Grill and to anyone looking for authentic and delicious Malaysian cuisine, this is it. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the owners were incredibly friendly and hospitable.

I love coming here, especially with my family. It's a perfect restaurant to order multiple dishes, and the food is amazing every time! service is neat too, you can usually get seated immediately.

Horrible restaurant. It used to be good but now it's just junk. They changed the way they make the Roti Canai. I was shocked when it was brought out. It looked like a piece of corn tortilla. The sauce was cold and bland. The sizzling tofu was awful. It was not even sizzling. The dish was not hot and tasteless. I ordered pan fried noodle. It was not even pan fried!!!! It was just plain wonton noodles over bland brown sauce with beef. I was what the hell is wrong with this place now? Of course questioned the waitress about these dishes. They always come up with BS excuses. I would love to see Gordon Ramsey do an episode of Kitchen Nightmares of this place. He would say, SHUT IT DOWN!!!!

I occasionally get takeout form here through work. They are a solid place that offers many options for Malaysian food. Drinks overly sweet though. Thai ice tea is a must try

Best Malaysian food and service in Brooklyn! Authentic Malaysian restaurant that has been in business for 20 years. Whether you dine with the old village ambiance or take out they're always on point.

I went her with a friend of mine whose local since I love the Chinatown in sunset park we went under her recommendation to this Malaysian spot. This place is really authentic also good food takeout or delivery with a little different spins on things like the chicken satay peanut sauce which was thicker and better tasting in my opinion. The chicken was like a Chinese bbq stand style. Also the chicken roti was delicious so I know this place is legit. The nesa lemak is different fully sushi rice and the sardines where in a different sauce as was the pickled veggies but still delicious. And the #4 Kure teanoodles were the best part.

Nice place to have lunch, food tastes great with wok fire taste. Hope they can give me more of the hot sauce. This is my lunch spot from now.

I was craving some Malaysian food and saw this restaurant so decided to take some takeout to try. I got two orders of the roti canai, haianese chicken with rice, and curry beef stew with rice. In total it was less than $30 so not bad. When I brought it home, the roti canai was hard and chewy. The curry they gave was a large chunk of oil. I tried to stir it but the oil wasn't leaving. The curry beef stew was not bad but the beef pieces weren't tender. The haianese chicken I was disappointed in because it was small pieces of chicken and the rice was meh. The chicken pieces were more bone than meat.

This spot is my boyfriend's favorite for Malaysian food. It is operated by an older asian couple and everytime we go, they are always so friendly! We both ordered the prawn mee to go and they gave a good amount of food. The broth was light and flavorful, with a slight kick of heat and the noodles were fresh. All their dishes are great! I've had their Hainan chicken, their shrimp with okra and char kurey teow! I would definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for good Malaysian food. As an FYI, it is take-out only and they do accept card!

Been here a couple times before and had no problem with the food. Food came out relatively fast: I ordered lumpia and roti for appetizers. I always love the roti for its crispiness. The lumpia was okay. I probably wouldn't order it again. Then I got the Indian mee goreng which basically tasted like chow mien. I also tried the sambal shrimp and pattaya chicken for the first times. I did enjoy the sambal shrimp-- it was very flavorful. Although the chicken was slightly dry, the flavor made up for it. For dessert I ordered shaved ice, trying it for the first time and it was pretty good.

This has been a go to Malaysian place in 8 Ave for my family. I would say it is a solid stable for Malaysian food if you want. It is a family run business but the food is affordable and good. I would say it is mainly Cantonese people so if you know chinese it probably will make the language barrier easier. Overall, recommend in Brooklyn if you want Malaysian food.

Idk why this place gets such a bad rep, the food is good if you order authentic dishes. Came with a large group and ordered 15 things in total so I was able to try a lot of different things. Will note that if you speak Cantonese, its a lot easier to order food and the waiters will be able to recommend you good food Roti canai is always a must, it was good here. Roti telur is a roti canai with egg in it. I've had this at a different place and didn't like it so I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. We ordered both chicken satay and beef satay. The chicken was a little on the dryer side but still good. Beef was better than the chicken. The egg and pork chow fun was super interesting. Our waitress asked if we wanted to try it yin tang style meaning there were 2 types of noodles. There was crispy mei fun on the bottom and chow fun on top. A must try The veggies were great, they have a few different ways to cook it but ask for Malaysian style since its the best. Sizzling beef was pepper beef served on a cast iron plate. Super flavorful and good portion size The pan fried rice cake is different than regular rice cakes at Asian restaurants. Instead of the flat round rice cakes, these resemble a square and are seared on all sides. The outside is crispy and inside is soft. The sting ray was very interesting. The meat comes in strands. Didnt taste super great but was a fun thing to try.

Roti with curry was not as bad as some of the other reviews, but the Bah Kut Teh (herbal soup) had huge pieces of fatty pork belly and not much herbal flavor to it. Pineapple fried rice was delicious but the chicken and shrimp in taro nest was very soggy. Me friend and I hoped for authentic Malaysian food but was disappointed. The serve was very bad. One of the waitress was very rude and was not helpful at all. We wanted to keep one of the menu but she didn't even ask and just took them away.

My family is from Burma and very partial to Southeast Asian cuisine. The pungent, garlicky, spicy flavors of Malaysian food remind us of home in a city where Burmese food is rare, so we have Malaysian food often. I was absolutely ravenous when I ate here and still I found the food underwhelming and lacking in depth of flavor. The menu is a very pared down version of the fare you'd find at many other Malaysian restaurants. A lot of the menu consists of Chinese dishes. The roti canai, a classic dish, was really bad. The sauce is almost entirely oil, and the roti is paper thin and kind of stale. We ordered multiple stir-fried noodle dishes including the char kway teow, a classic Malaysian dish. While they each had the charred, "breath of the wok" flavor we seek, the noodles were incredibly underseasoned. The belacan they make in house is really tasty though and so I found myself pouring this all over the bland dishes we ordered here. The coconut rice had barely a hint of coconut in it. While the noodle dishes were bland, other dishes were overly salted. Service was friendly and prompt, and prices are low. I'd definitely go to other Malaysian restaurants over New Belacan.

I have been many times to this place, usually ordered Curry Laksa, which was always good! Tried out something new today: Duck meat with Yee noodles and wasn't disappointed either! Service is very attentive and friendly, always.

I was surprised to see this restaurant has such low reviews! My family and I come here a few times a year when we're craving Malaysian food. We always do family style where we share 5-6 dishes. The service is quick and the waiters are pretty nice and attentive.

It's just okay Malaysian food. I've had better in Chinatown. I got the two dishes to share with my mom. The lunch special is cheaper than other dishes and less amount but it's good for one. They uses baby shrimps btw. Wanted to order the Hainanese chicken lunch special but they don't serve the chicken until 1 pm. (Reason is unknown) The wet looking egg drop noodles was okay too. Got to break apart the noodles that are clumped together in the egg stew so there is flavor when you slurp them up. I got it with seafood; there's choices of other meats too. Didn't finish it all so I had the leftovers for take out. Overall, it was decent place to go stop by for lunch but don't see myself going back.

There are few Malaysian restaurants in Brooklyn and this is the one I go for when I craves. Prices are affordable, service is fast and taste is reasonable so I can't complain. My favorite menus are Penang Kwe Teong, Seafood Belarchan fried rive and Roti Cha nan.

This place is absolutely amazing! My boyfriend and I got there 30 minutes before closing time. They were so nice and didn't rush us at all. We ate a lot and the food was amazing! Every single thing we ordered was delicious! I would definitely recommend to everyone...this place is a gem and the staff is amazing! It is now in my faves.

Food tastes really good, authentic Malaysian. But I don't know why, food usually doesn't come hot, just warm. Especially the curry stuffed tofu soup noodle, the soup and noodles are hot but the stuffed tofu is cooked but barely hot.

I ordered hainese chicken with rice for pick up. As soon as I opened the box, it is 7 of the worst possible pieces of chicken I've ever seen. Totally disappointed with the presentation and their selection of meat for customers.

Food was surprisingly good (or maybe I was just hungry lol). You can skip the curry and the roti canoi. The okra with Malaysian shrimp paste was good as well as the seafood taro dish. Hannan chicken was ok. Vegetable dishes were a bit salty. Overall not bad. Services was ok and prices are really inexpensive for dinner.

New Belacan is never empty, but it's never full either. It's one of those places you wonder about how they're still in business. I've seen this place under new management quite a couple of times. Every time, it's usually a hit or miss but mostly a miss. Sadly, this time was yet another miss. I ordered the mee goreng. It was just very lackluster. But what it wasn't lacking was grease. I tried my Dad's chicken curry and the chicken was dry. The curry wasn't bad though. My mom had the fish head soup with rice noodles - I actually really liked the broth so I guess if I do find myself back here again (unlikely), that is what I would probably order. Service was slow, which is a no-no for a restaurant on 8th Ave. We Chinese people are an impatient people. While this level of service would have been appropriate in Manhattan, it doesn't quite fit in this Brooklyn neighborhood. There are a few other Malaysian options in this area, so you might be better off at one of those.

Walked in to have lunch due to being the first restaurant we saw after parking our car a couple of blocks away. Service was ok, we ordered a roti canai, curry chicken and the hoy nam chicken. Well the roti canai was oily, poorly executed. No taste, the roti bread was tough at best it was hardly warm. My chicken curry with rice was veru much compartmentalized as the rice was served on a very small bowl and the chicken curry was also served on a very small bowl. Aside from being difficult to mix and eat, it had no taste The rice was bland, definitely not thai rice. If anything it was more like a sticky chinese rice but no taste. We did get some type of free soup that came with the lunch special. However, since the food was tasteless and everything we order had no seasoning whixh is harx to believe givem that any curry is a compilation of many spices and aromatics which were not existent at this restaurant. Do yourself a favor and stay away from here. I would have been better off with the chinese guy that has a cart with kebobs and fish balls for a $2 each.

Love the curry beef hor fun (thick noodles) and the skewers (both are good but I like the chicken more). Their curry and peanut sauce are soooo good!!!!

I was down in the city visiting friends and tried this restaurant. I read the reviews ahead of time and slightly regret not taking a hint. I got the roti canai and beef/chicken satay and I tried my friend's beef noodle dish (forgot the name). I thought it tasted pretty good but I also haven't had Malaysian food in over 10 years so take that with a grain of salt. HOWEVER, I did get possible mild food poisoning from my food and did not have a good rest of my trip because of it. There was another review about their food being undercooked but I thought it wouldn't happen to me.... And here I am. (My friend also had a bad time.) I would've given this place 4 stars, but frequent meetings with the porcelain throne and clinging onto a plastic bag all day after was not too fun.

Was craving Malaysian food and this spot was recommended to us. At 1:30pm on a Sunday, there was no wait at all. The waiters and waitresses were very attentive and friendly. For a group of 5, we got 2 Roti Canais, a beef curry noodle dish, 1/2 a hainanese chicken with chicken oil rice, the malaysian fried noodles and hokkien noodles. My favorite dish was probably the hainanese chicken. In my opinion, the Roti was too crispy to the point where it just crumbled when we tried to rip it and the hokkien noodles were too soft (granted I don't know if the texture is supposed to be like that). Definitely have had better Malaysian food. Because of the good service, I would be opened to coming back.

I ordered & picked up dinner here last Tuesday 6p with my wife. It's worse than bad Chinese takeout which at least in this area is legit. This place is neither Malaysian (despite self-branding) nor 3-stars. I went only because it was a 2min walk from my son's pediatrician. First sign was they didn't understand my phoned in order despite reading their menu verbatim. Suggests, correctly, they've more items than they know thus doesn't do them well. This is no Shopsin's! I ordered the Malay chow fun. It was alright, only the smokey taste on the chow fun was worth it, but even then the rest of the noodle had no taste as neither sauce nor marinating nor any cooking method was much used. All its other ingredients, the few bean sprouts and carrot strips there were, left the $7.50 price too dissatisfying to justify repeating. The taste was so bland to missing as to warrant a wonder at the cooking method or whether they skipped the expected Malay array of spices. It was less savory than mediocre Chinese takeout. My wife ordered their broccoli and beef over rice. The quantity on hers was so awfully small, tiny by NYC standards, that it was immediately unappetizing, a rip off, such a silly small amount for $8.00 which would be $4.50 in Chinatown? It's neither Malay nor worth the money nor will see me again when so many vastly better options abound.

[Long overdue review that has been saved as a draft since late September] This specific spot itself has been pretty much serving Malaysian food for the last 15+ years, just a couple of changes in owners, and renovations. It is now New Belachan. A childhood friend of mine is moving overseas, to Korea, working abroad as a teacher. She decided to come here the night before her flight because this place use to be our spot for lunch every Saturday for a span of 7 years. Childhood memories were the main conversation of the night, gosh, I wish I never grew up. The service definitely needs improvement and it starts with removing the damn TV. The lady was glued to the screen that we repeatedly tried to wave and flag her down but nothing worked, until we shouted across the dining room. Very stingy on the napkins as well! We asked for a few but she only brings over 1? Just going to briefly go over the food we had that night. The roti canai was good but the curry is too spicy. The Hainanese Chicken was a bit undercooked. Sizzling Japanese Tofu was way too salty and tofu was still cold even though it was served on a sizzling hot plate. Curry Beef dish so skimpy totally not worth $11.95! The only things I, or we, actually enjoyed on our table were the Herbal Teas and the Egg & Pork Chow Fun. Definitely not how it use to be 10+ years ago, so much for reminiscing our memories. Either way, good luck Conny! I'll miss you dearly!

Reading the bad reviews of this place is funny. Not going to lie - if you're coming to a Malaysian restaurant to order Japanese food, then that sounds like a personal problem. But anyway, their menu looks to be revamped and they're concentrating only on Malaysian now. They also since removed the H from their name, so now they're New Belacan. Not confusing at all! I like this place as much as Redang Island and Nyonya, if not more. Their menu is extensive and food is prepared quickly. Definitely order family style. The beef Redang is very good and comes in a flavorful brown sauce. The Hainanese is pretty standard, but tasty. Spicy veggies are also good but nothing out of the ordinary. Decor is also cool, if not a bit seizure inducing.

I was a little hesitant coming in and it turns out that hesitation was completely warranted. The laksa was nothing like the stuff I've had at the stalls in KL (and the mmm mmm KLIA laksa :D), and the Hainanese chicken nothing like the stuff in Singapore et. al (the former was actually just not good but the latter was okay). The skewers were pretty tasty though. There are probably a few other dishes I could try before passing complete judgment, but needless to say, I saw enough and will not be back to give them the chance.

I hate to see all the negative reviews for this restaurant. I've been going to this Malaysian restaurant for my entire life, regularly with my family and I can say for a fact that it is very authentic. The prices are good for filling, flavorful dishes. Much better than Nyonya (the other Malaysian restaurant a few blocks down). My favorite dishes are the curry fish head and okra.

Other food is OK besides soup. The pigstomac soup ， This soup is terrible. A lot of pepper ， I feel sick after drinking this soup

Stumbled upon this place after wanting to try something new by 8 Ave. The inside decor is nice and the servers were pretty friendly. I ordered a roti canai and hainanese chicken. The roti canai was pretty oily and had little flavor to it. The hainanese chicken was mediocre. There was soy sauce on the chicken, but the it still barely had any flavor.

A very basic Malaysian Restaurant on the cusp of Brooklyn's makeshift chinatown makes for a nice, casual no-frills dinner with your friends. The Roti Canai is not the best I've had, but it's fairly passable. The real treat here are the chicken and beef satay skewers. Both were juice, tender and full of flavor! The peanut dipping sauce was a lovely mix of sweet and salty--just enough to make you want to pour it all over your rice (Which, needless to say, I did)! Haianese chicken is a safe bet, as well as a dish of garlic sauteed greens (pea sprouts, love them!). Black Bean sauce Mussels are good, and if you like--try the fried fishcakes with a spicy little kick. Get the yellow rice, and any other entrees you desire--everything is pretty solid here, so bon appetit!

best malaysian restaurant on 8th avenue and their curry fish head pot rivals the ones in queens. Ordered roti canai, curry fish head, assam laksa noodle, hainan chicken, pea shoot veggies, and ba kut tea. Very authentic and flavorful, the only dish that wasn't amazing was the hainanese chicken - tasted dry and not as tender as expected. But other than that everything we ate was delicious and we now have a go to spot for malaysian food. Definitely try their curry!

I came here for dinner one time. I was quite surprised it was empty on a Sunday night. Usually when I walk by it is some what a busy place. This place is Malaysian restaurant smack in the middle of 8th ave Chinatown. The ladies staff that work here are really friendly. They are really nice people. The food arrives to your table pretty quickly consider what we ordered. The food we ordered are very big, so it is more like family style. Be nice and share. We ordered soup to start. We had the Seafood Tomyam soup. Family style soup because they serve it a huge bowl. The soup was oh my sour, but a good kind of sour...kind of. Maybe too much sour flavor. Lots of seafood which was a plus. We ordered two noodle dishes to share. We got the Captain Noodle and the Assam Laksa. The Assam Laksa just didn't seem right to me. While the sour flavor was present. The sauce that went on top of soup base was way too thick. It just didn't mix well. The only parts you can it was the noodles and veggies. The other stuff in the dish was not edible. The Captain Noodle was pretty good. It's pan fried noodles in a brown sauce with pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, and veggies. Noodles was flavorful and had lots of meats. This Malaysian spot is an okay spot for me. It's one of the few that are in close proximity to me.
