Best Places to Eat and Drink in Northern Michigan for Viewing Fall Leaves - Eater Detroit

"Most visitors hungry for a sandwich hit the Village Cheese Shanty in Leland, but don’t forget about New Bohemian Cafe in Northport, a family stop on the route’s northernmost point. The LBC, which stands for Leelanau Beef and Cheddar, is everything you’ve ever wanted between two pieces of ciabatta — sliced beef, spicy habanero cheddar, sweet caramelized onion jam, and napa cabbage slaw. The best. Full stop." - Stacey Brugeman

My husband and I were in Northport for the first time, celebrating our 40th anniversary. We stopped in here on a Saturday morning. It was bustling with lots of people which appeared as mostly locals . . . people knowing each other and young adults doing computer work. It was hard to find a place to sit! Our tea and lattes were wonderful. We also got a breakfast sandwich that just seemed like a frozen one that was microwaved so we were disappointed with that. It's a fun little shoppe to look around in.

Always fresh, always delicious. Great coffee, breakfast and lunch selections. Their sandwiches? I can’t pick a favorite, they are all that good!

Google
Great little local breakfast spot! Their staff was so welcoming, the food was so good & hot! Enjoy a sandwich & coffee and head over to the local park by the marine & enjoy the scenery!! 10/10 must try breakfast!

Google
We ate here 3 times during our 3 day stay in Northport. It was that good. The croissant breakfast sandwich was warm and melty and the mustard gave it a nice flavorful taste. Very filling! Had it for breakfast twice. We also got the Italian sandwich and the corned beef sandwich on our way out of town. Would have ordered a couple extras to take home if I had known they would be that good. The hot Chocolate is made with milk (not water which is rare) and so delicious. The staff was friendly, efficient, and welcoming. Definitely a reliable place for casual meals while in Northport.

This cafe was awesome. I ordered the LBC sandwich. It was hand-made on the spot. It was an excellent sandwich. Top quality ingredients and the bun was toasted perfectly. I don't have the best teeth and i was able to bite and chew this sandwich. The staff greeted me the instant i walked in. They were friendly and bubbly spirited. In fact a lady that had been eating outside finished her meal and went out of her way to come in and compliment the staff. This cafe has merchandise you can purchase that won't break your bank. I definitely plan to revisit and try other menu items. They are open from 7:am to 3:pm. So, i will have to try breakfast here. I highly recommend this place for all ages. Good job staff!!

Google
Very delicious sandwiches for takeout. I loved the Figgy Piggy. I also had the McMurphy(?) for Breakfast one morning and it was delicious but a bit messy to eat in the car. They have 4 or 5 tables inside and also a few outside. Sweet rolls and cookies are also available.

Google
Outstanding sandwiches!!! Went back multiple times during our stay in Northport. Highly recommend the turkey. The Greek and Italian were also great. Don’t forget to get a big cookie, they are delightful. Coffee is good too!

Google
I've been coming up to Northport since 2013! This place is a great spot for breakfast and coffee. Little cramp but totally worth it! Smiles all around from the staff, and the quality is top notch!

Yelp
Great little place. We had lunch here on our trip down M-22 to Frankfort. We liked the feeling of Northport, and specifically the New Bohemian Cafe. We both are from the Midwest, but after spending 14 years living in a town on the shoreline in CT, we felt like this area was much like a small New England town. We liked the quietness of it, but maybe after Memorial Day it gets much more crowded. This is a very cute little place and I could see myself coming in with my wife each morning and having coffee and sharing one of those MASSIVE chocolate chip cookies

Yelp
A great place to stop and enjoy some wifi! The place is clean and seems to be always busy! I ordered the iced chai and it didn't disappoint! The cinnamon roll was also super soft!

Yelp
This is a decent place to spot in the lovely town of Northport for coffee or lunch. There cookies are pretty good and the coffee, it's also ok. I haven't explored much of the menu, however I ordered a sandwich that was about on par quality wise as the cheese shack in Leland. Not great. Typically it's cheap non organic bread, which if you're in the know is not good for our allergies, digestive system etc. maybe they have other items that are better? The service...probably the most lacking part. Younger gentleman was not friendly taking my order...perhaps having a bad day? An older gentleman who seemed jaded, reamed out another older female who employee seeking information was just embarrassing. I'm not sure if they are the owners, a couple, exes, brother sister, or what. But that is mostly why I will not return. Be kind!

Yelp
We decided to take a quick trip north of Traverse City, on a tip that Northport is where the best Cafe is. Well, they were telling to truth. From the coffee, to the sandwiches and pastries, New Bohemian is well worth the scenic drive through Sutton's Bay.

Yelp
Great Iced Cold Brew! Amazing selection of fresh baked goods! Open at 7am. Beautiful town.

Yelp
This is the best sandwich I have ever had in my life. And I normally hate sandwiches. Every single time we visit my partner's family, my main priority is driving up here and figuring out a way to get the sandwiches. I don't know how y'all do it, but they're truly incredible. We even brought along my metamour who is gluten free and they said the gluten free sandwiches were so good that they literally almost thought it was normal bread - we had to walk inside and check to make sure they hadn't mixed ours up, we were amazed. Even writing the review makes me want the sandwich. Please never close, I would cry forever, haha.

Yelp
Stopped for a late breakfast. Plenty of 'brunch' and lunch options. Coffees, lattes, etc. too! Inside seating is cozy but comfortable. Outside is nice too. All employees very helpful and attentive.
google avatar

Marielle M.

Yelp
This is definitely my favorite breakfast spot around. The breakfast sandwich is SO good! You also don't have to wait very long and they do online ordering. The coffee was pretty good too. They also have gluten free options. Such a cute place!

Ryan M.

Yelp
Local family owned and operated business. If you love good coffee and breakfast food this is your morning stop. They have a full menu of coffee drinks from basic black through iced cappuccinos and lattes. Nine Bean Row pastries are outstanding as are the made in house breakfast sandwiches. The Kev McMurphin is a must try.

Jan S.

Yelp
Fabulous...amazing, memory inducing breakfast selections! Totally worth ANY wait that might be encountered! Try it; you will NOT be disappointed!!!

Peggy H.

Yelp
The sandwiches are so delicious and good portion sizes. I love the figgy piggy and the chickpea curry wrap- amazing! Cookies are to die for too!

Yelp
We stopped by this sweet cafe before our travels home and it was an excellent choice. We were able to get in and out quickly, have a delicious and filling meal, and the staff was so lovely. I enjoyed visiting and am excited to come back soon!

Yelp
Good basic sandwich place with tasty and fresh ingredients. We were passing through Northport at lunchtime and used Yelp to find this place. It's a small place where you order at the counter and they call your name. The menu is varied, with a couple of veggie options. All the ingredients were fresh and the bread is a highlight.
google avatar

Gail M.

Yelp
Great service friendly staff and dog friendly Cannot wait to go back to Northport MI

Yelp
We stopped in last minute for a late lunch and something quick, we got the chicken salad croissant sandwich, and the rainbow wrap. Both sandwiches were enjoyed by our party. One of us tried the cherry sweet tea that they offered and really liked it. Two of us got coffee: caramel mocha and a vanilla cinnamon latte. Both were amazing! We got in and out with three sandwiches and two coffee in under 10 minutes! this!
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice! If this place were in a major metro area, I'd give 4 stars- but given the selection of restaurants in rural Newport, this place rules! The coffee is really great. My wife got a plain coffee that was very good. I got a half caf oatmilk cappuccino with one pump of sugar free vanilla, because I am that annoying- I really appreciated how nicely they took my obnoxious order and even repeated it back to make sure they had it right. We both got their riff on a McDonalds Egg McMuffin- the "Kev McMurphin" which was really good, sausage, hash brown, cheese and egg on an English muffin. Yum! It was missing a bit of the grease factor that makes a real egg McMuffin so indulgent, but the chili mayo was a nice touch. We also had a very delicious chocolate croissant. The place is also super cute, with friendly service.

Yelp
Zero complaints. The vibe is cool, the people friendly, and the food and coffee delicious. The breakfast burrito hit the spot, but the murphette is probably the best breakfast sandwich I've ever tasted.

Britt P.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch on our way to the state park. We had a chicken salad sandwich, an Arnold Palmer, and a chocolate chip cookie. Friendly, quick service and every thing was delicious. They were very busy and often had a line but moved quickly.

Yelp
Love this little coffee shop. The atmosphere and the town it's in are amazing. The food and drinks they offer, so good. Friendly staff. I highly recommend you stop in and try it for yourself next time your in Michigan. You'll love it!

Yelp
A must visit cafe when in or near Northport!! Great coffee, tasty pastries, and amazing sandwiches!!

John S.

Yelp
The friendliness and ambiance that only a small town coffee shop can provide, mixed with the delicious coffee, treats and food that surpass the evil-coffee-empire. Great service, incredible breakfast burritos and sandwiches (so big!), great coffee!
google avatar

Victoria J.

Yelp
Their vegitarian sandwiches are flavorful and fabulous. Their coffee and chocolate chip cookies are great too!

Douglas W.

Yelp
NBC's sandwiches are outstanding. My wife and I had the Murphette and Turkey sandwich, and they taste, ingredients, and preparation were excellent. If you're up for the longer drive, it's worth passing up competitors such as Trish's Dishes in Leland, Fiddleheads in Lake Leelanau, Streetside Grille in Suttons Bay, and Knot Just A Bar in Omena. The downside is the hefty price for such modest-sized sandwiches and nothing on the side. But high prices are normal for deli sandwiches on the Leelanau. So if you want them, the best you can do is get the best ones to eat.

Yelp
Me and the lady stopped in one fine morning after a nite times of kamping in the stait park seeing as how were on the lam and what not. Never had bahamian foods so this caught are eyes. Well we ordered the Kevin McMurphys sandwitches and listen carefully when I say this..... beleave it or not... BETTER THAN MCDONALDS SANDWITCHES!! Guess what they say is true, nobody makes breakfast better then the Bahamas!! Also saw sum dogs so that was a nice touch. I would probably recommend!!

Yelp
Hidden gem! We were tourists looking for lunch and stubbled into this simple and delicious cafe. We had the turkey & Italian sandwiches and a chocolate chip cookie. Perfect portions and delicious (not an ordinary sandwich). We got soda to drink & I like the local brand of soda. Support your local businesses! Thank you for the delicious meal and positive atmosphere

Yelp
My family rented a condo down the street & I needed internet to work. Ended up coming here & the food, service & ambiance is amazing! Came back 3 days ina row!

Yelp
Great Food, great service, great staff and are near my home! The pastries, sandwiches and soups are always good!

Yelp
This is such a great cafe. The coffee is always amazing, and the sandwiches / pastries are always interesting and excellent. They have the best breakfast burrito I have ever tasted, and sister let me tell you I have tasted ALOT of BrekkieRitos. The McMurphin sando is also a delight. Ten out of five stars, would nail again.

Karl H.

Yelp
Their food is extremely consistent and I visit this place at least a few times a month. I love that they serve northwoods, although admittedly I'm not a huge fan of their chais. I still have to rate this place 5 stars due to the friendly staff and the focus on amazing food.

Pamela W.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches & friendly service! My husband had a figgy piggy sandwich with ham, Brie & fig jam. I was delighted to see they had GF buns & had a delicious corned beef sandwich. Dog friendly patio a plus!
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
Order the Kev breakfast sandwich!! So good we had it 2days in a row. Plus you must try a chocolate croissant from 9 Bean Row. Great online ordering process.
google avatar

Nilankan C.

Yelp
Elegant, simple and great breakfast options. The dining area and service quality and speed was commendable. We had the kev mcmurphin which was a great start to our day.

Ryan H.

Yelp
Easily the best cup of coffee I've ever had, hands down. Sandwiches are amazing as well. But I'm a bit of a coffee snob so when I tried their coffee on a family trip I had to figure out a way to get that same cup at home. I live four hours away so I called to see if they would ship me some which they were happy to do. I love supporting small businesses and even more so when they have the best coffee around
google avatar

Mary-Catheryn B.

Yelp
We love this little gem so much!!! The pastries and sandwiches are all amazing. And the staff is simply the best. LOVE!
google avatar

Thomas P.

Yelp
Good was outstanding, baked goods prepared just right but my Italian sandwich was spot on. The breakfast burrito was done well, my son loved the lemonade. If we find ourselves on this end of M22 again, we will be back.
google avatar

Anna G.

Yelp
Really delicious food! I got the piggly wiggly sandwich for lunch and everything tasted amazing! The staff is so kind and welcoming!
google avatar

Yelp
Looked cute til it took over 20 mins to get the wrong coffee (whole milk instead of oat milk) and we are actually STILL waiting for a simple bagel with cream cheese... Almost everyone here is irritated I'm glad I don't live close. They wouldn't even give this guy his Pepsi without the espresso or something being made with it. I didn't get it, but when the lady came to the window she was snotty about it to the gentleman...
google avatar

Yelp
English muffin breakfast sandwich tasted like frozen then microwaved food. On the bright side.. cold brew coffee was good and they used compostable plastic cups!

Yelp
My experience getting lunch from NBC: It started with a phone call for a pickup at ~1:30pm on a Weds in mid Sep. The person taking the order was very friendly and professional. I ordered 3 sandwiches and a drink, no modifications. They told me it'd be ready in 15 mins and gave me callbacks on each item I ordered, perfect service. We arrived 15 mins later. I had to go inside to pay. Bad timing while we were on a tight schedule- there were 3 separate older couples in line in front of me that all had yet to order. They were asking ridiculous questions like "How spicy is the cheese on the LBC?" I waited about 12-15 min and I was kicking myself for not ordering online. I like to talk to someone while ordering and also most of the online ordering sites are charging the restaurant per transaction. I finally got to the counter and was out the door in 30 seconds. We plotted a course southwest towards our destination and booked it. Sandwiches were distributed before turning onto M-22. Fellow diners raved about their choices. My man with the LBC (roast beef) just kept saying "This is slappin!", almost incoherently, a couple times while his mouth was half full. He also said "There's so much drama in this" toward the end of the first half. Huge portion- He wrapped up the other half and again said "Slappin!" about 6 hours later when he ate it. The other diner got the turkey bacon etc. sandwich. They said it was fantastic and loved all the different and unique flavors. The bread is perfect for these hearty sandwiches. Their iced chai was "Great". I believe it bc I saw Rishi brand tea for sale while I was inside and that shit is fancy. Third sandwich review preface- I love Italian sandwiches for lunch. I have driven 40+ minutes each way to an Italian market on a Sunday just to pick up 7 premade Italian subs for lunches for the week. I've done that a few times. If I go to a sandwich shop for lunch, I'm looking at the board for an Italian variation as soon as I walk in the door. I'll have to try it a second time to make sure, but the Italian sandwich from NBC that I ate today was the best Italian sandwich I have ever eaten. I'd take a bite and say "This is the best goddamn sandwich I've ever had." I loved that they used both sweet and spicy capocollos. I was excited when I saw that on the menu and the application of it was amazing. The meats are paper thin sliced and stacked high. The proportions of each ingredient including veggies, dressing, and NBC's bread were perfect. I was so impressed that I wrote 7 paragraphs about it. Also the inside decor is great.

Yelp
This is a very quaint and wonderful place to get a coffee and breakfast. The casheer suggested an iced cherry mocha and he loved it. I had the special vanilla cinnamon latte and it was also amazing. Try the breakfast burrito and you won't be disappointed either. Until next time "New Bohemian Cafe". We appreciated your service! Ron & Diane

Yelp
Such a great find. Conveniently located and greeted immediately by super friendly owner. Ordered 3 sandwiches- including a heavily modified for the kids. The sandwiches were made with quality fresh ingredients. Iced honey cardamom latte hit the spot.

S H.

Yelp
I really wanted to write a good review but cannot. We went in this morning for iced coffee and fifteen minutes later finally received it despite five people working and very few other customers. They gave us a beeper but it didn't work. But it was not the failure of the beeper working and notifying us that was the reason for the delay because we were patiently waiting right there. This was our second experience over the last two weeks and the last time we also had to wait a very long time for a simple order. Maybe if the employees were not talking with each about theme park experiences things might have moved a little quicker. A suggestion: more than one person out of the five working on coffee - which kind of is their main draw.
google avatar

Olivia M.

Yelp
Cute little spot to grab coffee and a sandwich. Staff was really pleasant and the food was satisfying.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
When the summer gods part the skies so mortals may enjoy the waters of the north, they tend to point the way to New Bohemian. Ever time we rent a pontoon boat for an adventure on the Bay or on Lake Leelanau, we order New Bohemian sandwiches to take along with... mind you, we ARE that family with 47 different modifications to each sandwich... and every time, they are PERFECT. Please don't tell your friends about his place... I'm only telling you, as I don't want them to get overwhelmed. TOTALLY worth it.
google avatar

Terry R.

Yelp
Great place for coffee and a baked treat. Also serve wine and have some great looking cold sandwiches. Gluten free options, too.

Jeff M.

Yelp
Great staff working hard to provide tasty sandwiches and great coffee in Northport. Definitely stop in! Jeff

Yelp
Cool small spot way up north. Really liked the town of Northport. We grabbed a few breakfast sandwiches and lattes. Can't recall the name of the latte but it was great. The mcmurph sandwich was great as well. The chili mayo on it was a great touch.
google avatar

Ray M.

Yelp
I am a handicap military veteran. I cannot wear facial coverings because of injuries sustained while overseas to my nose/throat. They refused to serve me because of this. Which is against federal law. The Americans with Disabilities Act. Which states plainly they are not allowed to discriminate against anyone based on disabilities. Even the state face mask mandate states the same. Which they claim to uphold. I didn't risk my life for this country to be told I won't be served because I'm disabled. They will be hearing from my staff shortly about legal actions. Do not support people who do not support the people, that support you. As we left they joking wished us luck about finding food elsewhere. This is how they treat their customers and your veterans.

Yelp
I was stuck in the car on a phone call and asked my husband to just get me a turkey sandwich. He brought me back One of the best sandwiches I have ever had. No joke. These folks now how to make a flavorful and balanced sandwich!! Plenty of meat and great honey mustard and veggies. Great texture! What a hidden gem in Northport! I have a feeling we will frequent this place often. My husband was also raving about his chicken salad sandwich. Seriously--do not pass this place up (also shout out for mask enforcement and outside eating options). Well done!!
