Very good Thai restaurant with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Beautiful open decor with high ceilings, lovely furniture and art. It feels very relaxed and pleasant. The food has always been extraordinary and the portions are surprisingly large, so be sure to consider what you will take home!

This restaurant was one of the worst we have ever been to in the entire country. We ordered Corona beers which were expired (displayed in photos) - when we pointed this out to the waitress, she was not apologetic at all and simply went and got fresh ones which were not even iced. The servers here were extremely rude and disinterested. The food was dismal- the shrimp was unseasoned and the vegetables were undone. There were even insects on the chairs. They brought us the cheque without even asking and billed us for the beers nonetheless. Highly recommend not visiting this restaurant- it ruined our spirits thoroughly To be honest, they are lucky that we are not complaining to the Health Department.

Nice authentic Thai food. Good service. Can go again. Could have given 4.5 stars. Pictures show Papaya salad, Coconut soup, Red curry and Panang curry, all with Tofu and vegetables. Every dish had lots of vegetables. They were light on Tofu though.

We were a little disappointed with our visit. The cucumber salad wasn’t available, so we ended up ordering the chicken salad instead. We also ordered the pineapple fried rice, but it didn’t have the typical fried rice texture — it was much softer and closer to sticky rice than what we expected. The flavors were okay, but overall the dishes didn’t quite meet our expectations. Hoping for a better experience next time.

7/24/2025 New Chiang Mai Thai Cuisine 110 Kalakaua St Hilo, HI 96720 We went there for dinner on a Thursday. It's in downtown Hilo on a side street with street parking which was okay since most everything else was closed, could be more difficult for lunch. It's a clean and cozy table and chair setup with Thai ambiance. Service was fast and attentive. We ordered the Chicken Satay and shared the Green Curry. The Chicken had good flavor but was hard and a little dry. The Green curry was okay and not memorable. This place is owned by the family that has Nim's. The quality of food was okay but I would not repeat. There's a much better place in Hilo.

Went here for a family dinner it was amazing! Service and food were amazing. My partner had the pad tai and had the black bean noodles ! We also got the crispy chicken with sweet sauce! Very tasty.They were so delicious and the portion sizes were huge. Plenty of food to take home! Very nice people there as well!

Abundant vegetables made so much of this meal pop. The summer rolls felt like a hand salad, with plump and fresh shrimp, and a peanut sauce popping with robust flavor. Mee kow spicy noodles danced with salty sweet umami, and deliciously painful runny nose level spicy at the requested 7 out of 10 spice level. The brown rice with our green curry was nutty. The duck they used was the barbeque type; Works great. The service was extremely attentive, belying that these are professional palate pleasers. $100 before tip paid for enough to feed generous dinner to two hungry hikers with yummy leftovers enough for our lunch tomorrow. What a fabulous meal!!

There's a few options for Thai food in Hilo but my go-to is New Chiang Mai. Parking can be limited on a busy night, especially Friday nights during the downtown night market, but usually isn't an issue during the day. In spite of that, service is normally knowledgeable and friendly, extensive menu options, and served family style. I'm hooked on their steam dumplings, but I'm also a sucker for cilantro and onions, ask for it on the side or without if the people you're sharing with aren't fans lol. Recently got the summer rolls, pleasantly surprised by the portion size and the peanut sauce was so good we wiped the bowl clean; I like that it was on the thicker/chunkier side instead of too runny. You can never go wrong with the pad thai, perfectly coated and seasoned. Their red curry is perfect with a side of sticky rice (not included with curry order) and their eggplant stir fry was soft in a delectable sauce. Seriously can't go wrong with any options here. They also have alcoholic drinks, great sounding options but they have a heavy pour if you're into that.

A local tour guide recommended this Thai restaurant as one of his favorite spots. He raved about the eggplant dish and we were excited to eat here, but we're severely Our visit started with a rather long way to be seated. When we finally were addressed, we requested to sit by the window to which verse told that we could not because the table was dirty. It did not look dirty, but he sat elsewhere. Have to replace our order random extra empty plates, bowls and serving and soup arrived that we never ordered and had no use. When the food arrived, we noticed that they were large portions. However, I would've preferred small portions with a steer food.. The lrad-nar/gravynoodles dish while we requested a no heat dish, we did not expect a no spice dish which tasted overwhelmingly of vinegar. The "medium" (6/10) spiced pad kee mao was barely a 2/10 level. Both came with thin, dried, packaged noodles that were unappealing. The pad kee mao lacked real basil flavor and fresh elements and felt bland and bare-bones cafeteria style . The rad-nar was a salty, vinegary gravy and simply not edible. To top it off, locals began arguing and pulling other diners into the conflict, which made the atmosphere uncomfortable. The wait staff who were asked to interview ran off and ignored issues. I simply can not recommend this restaurant.

Food quantity was great for the money. Food came out quick, and the veggies were very fresh. Flavor was lacking a bit, I got Pad Se Ew and it was just kinda meh. It had a good spice level, but wasn't amazing. My wife got the Ginger Dish, and the ginger slivers were so big they made eating it less enjoyable (we knew it would have ginger, we just thought that they'd be smaller.) We did really enjoy the tofu summer rolls, and were happy with the gluten free and vegan options available.

My favorite Thai restaurant in all of Hilo. Consistently great food. I love all the fresh veggies they add to everything. The tom kha soup is a personal favorite is has tons of aromatics like galanagal, kafir lime and lemongrass. I had the wonton soup for the first time last visit and it was amazing! Rich broth with tons of meat and flavorful wontons. You really can't go wrong here.

If you're looking for a good Thai place in Hilo, that is off the beaten path, then you found the right spot. You can get the food that you normally expect to see plus a wide variety of Curry. The kitchen cook is from Thailand, and the food is as authentic as you're going to get in Hawaii. If you choose to get Thai hot, you will probably regret it. I think it might be their personal mission to burn you from the inside out. But it does taste great. The only reason I did not give a five star is because we asked for chicken and received pork and due to a language barrier we were not able to communicate that clearly that it was wrong. But to be fair, the chicken was good. The locations parking is a little more challenging, but free parking, and the restaurant is a little tighter to sit but good atmosphere and good people. And service is very quick.

The best Thai food I have found anywhere. The chef/owner does not hold back on flavor and spice. I come here anytime I visit Hilo and always bring food back to Kona for my family. The absolutely favorite dish amongst my family is their won ton soup. The broth is delicious. Everything is good, but I favor the green curry, the summer rolls, the chicken larb, and the pad thai noodles. However the noodles don't travel well to Kona so I only order these when we're dining in. The restaurant is comfortable and the staff is friendly.

I'll start this review with saying the food is very good to excellent. Today I ordered ahead for take out at 12:30pm for lunch. 3 minutes later, it started raining and I called back and said that I would be eating inside because of the weather. I was met with an unhappy response saying they already starting packing the boxes but it would be okay to eat out of boxes. When I arrived, the only waitress had the food ready but not the drink. I asked two different times for the drink that I had ordered and finally had to walk to the counter before it was actually made. There were only about 4 tables used in the whole restaurant. Then, when I recieved the bill, the prices of the two main dishes were higher than the posted prices for lunch specials. The waitress simply looked at me and grunted and changed only one of the prices and gave me the bill disgruntling. Basically, because of the wait staff's attitude, we had only an okay to negative experience. I don't think I will be back here for a very long time. There are other thai restaurants that are friendlier and I don't feel like I am a pain by eating at their restaurants.

Absolutely disgusting. We found insects crawling on our chairs as soon as we sat down. To make it worse, they served us expired beer--twice. When we called them out on it, they didn't even have the decency to say sorry, just swapped it out like it was nothing. Rude service and dirty conditions. Avoid this place.

I loved the Duck curry (red curry duck with pineapple). My wife enjoyed her stir fried vegetables. Service was top notch

I don't leave review very often but the food and service here was unreal! Great portions ! The pad Thai was delicious and the chicken satay was something I had never experienced before! We ended up ordering some Buddha curry and as someone who doesn't like curry I can say TRY IT! decor is great fans on big windows and nice ambiance. AND LOCAL FAMILY OWNED! doesn't get better than this. You cannot come to Hilo and not try New Chiang !

In my humble opinion, this is easily one of the best places to eat in Hilo. Maybe I'm biased because Thai cuisine is in my top 5.... I've eaten here many times over the years and have been impressed by the consistency of their quality food and portion sizes. They don't skimp. My partner and I recently ordered their panang curry (with chicken, mild), summer rolls, and garlic pepper stir fry (with chicken, hot). Let's start with their summer rolls. They give a lot of pieces, definitely more than the norm, or at least the Thai restaurants I ate at in California. They were incredibly fresh and filling, and their peanut sauce complemented perfectly. My garlic pepper stir fry was excellent. The spice level was perfect--not too hot to make the food unappealing, but enough to give the sinuses some sniffles and add great flavor. There was plenty of chicken and vegetables. I definitely would order this again. Overall, they will continue to have my business for the foreseeable future!

Best. Wonton. Soup. In. The. World. Whenever I visit the Big Island of Hawaii, I come here for the wonton soup at least a couple times. I have had other menu items and was not disappointed, but the wonton soup has a hold on my heart. No wonton soup anywhere I have been in my life is like this one. It has no fuss ans no muss (because some soups are just crowded with various veggies and such)... this is just HUGE 100% homemade wontons, bok choy, chicken, green onion, cilantro and garlic. I can never have enough. Just get it!

We waited almost an hour just for our appetizer. By the time it arrived, the ice in our water had completely melted--yes, that long. During our wait, we even saw a couple of other tables give up and leave. That being said, the food was actually really good, so I guess it was worth the wait. But unless they improve their service time, I'm not sure I'd come back.

Husband and I visited this restaurant on a Friday night and we ordered the Chiang Mai chicken fried rice in Thai spice level. Omg it was so spicy it burned our mouths like crazy. My hubby and I are both South Indians and have eaten pretty spicy food through out life. And our mouths were on fire. However the taste was amazing, so delicious, yummy, mouthwatering that we couldn't stop eating. To cool our pallet, we got the mango sticky rice which was alright. It was warm to our surprise. Not overly sweet. Mango was not much sweet too. Service was amazing, the lovely waitress gave us great suggestions and also local recommendations. Ambiance was cute and nice.

Very mid food, maybe this place is popular bc of big portions? We ordered the evil dish which was really... wet. And salty. Also got the pad Thai which was good but not great, and the pad see ew which was not seasoned enough.

Excellent Thai food in Hilo and one of the best on the island. Although the daughter's on Kanoelehua is slightly better (to which I gave 5 stars). The won ton soup and fried won tons can't be beat! Service is a little lacking at this one, but food is good. When we can we go to the daughter's, but either is good.

Very good pad se ew. Very slow service. Waited for 20 min after finished eating to get someone to come by to get box and check. Even after given check had to walk it up to counter despite many employees behind counter. But food good enough I would go back for sure.

eclectic vibes and vibrant murals. they have the best food in hilo for sure. definitely worth going to for the yellow curry. i dream about it late at night and i am so sad they were not open for christmas. cocktails are crisp and veggies are fresh. beautiful bathroom, love the house plants.

There is almost no duck in red curry duck. Only a few, small shreds of meat were there. Might as well call it red curry onion or tomato. Also, had to wait super long to order, and they forgot my sticky rice and mango at the end of entree. The store wasn't busy.

We love Thai food and have been picky about where we eat since visiting Thailand. We mostly make it at home. We visited the New Chiang Mai Thai Cuisine restaurant and were blown away. We had dinner here last night, leftovers for breakfast, and decided to get lunch on our way out of town. The chicken Larb is the BEST I've ever had. I ordered it both times. The Panang curry was perfect and the spicy noodles were deliciously tender and flavorful. We ordered sticky rice and mango to go because we are stuffed. The portions were large but what matters most is the food was fresh, the flavours were authentic, and the service was impeccable. We will be back every time we come to the East side. I also strongly recommend the coconut mojito!

Food was pretty delicious. Service was just ok. She seemed sweet. We ordered summer roles and ordered them with the pineapple sauce. Husband and daughter lobed it..The peanut sauce was $2.50 additional to have both. I didn't know the pineapple sauce was spicy and I can't eat spicy so I had to buy the peanut sauce anyway. I told her this and asked for the peanut sauce and she forgot. So I reminded her about 5 min later and she brought it to me. The bbq pork and rice came without a sauce so I asked for one and she brought me the same pineapple sauce from the summer rolls so I asked if they had something else that wasn't spicy. She brought me straight fish sauce with some garlic in it. It was good without the sauce but the sticky rice was a little dry. The pad se ew with beef was pretty good and the curry my husband got he absolutely loved. The place was decorated cute.

A first time on the big island, we went here as we are vegetarians. They have great vegetarian options and the servers took great care in making sure that we did not order any dishes that may have fish oil or oyster sauce in it. About the food and service were great and we were able to find parking right in front of the restaurant.

Very tasty and fresh food. Good value, due to large portions. Food was served quickly. Wait staff was efficient and somewhat friendly. They did come and checked on drinks regularLooked like a smaller mom & pop restaurant. Looking from outside, it'd be easy to pass by, but it is worth the stop. We were fairly hungry when we arrived. We decided to start with shrimp spring rolls and fried sweet potatoes. We're glad that's all we order, because we were full after the two appetizers.

I decided on Thai food for my birthday. I wanted to eat at home. My wife placed the order for our family ahead of time and picked it up. We ordered yellow curry with chicken, sticky rice, green papaya salad, pad Thai, and sticky rice with coconut milk and mango. I enjoyed all of the dishes. The sticky rice was a little dry, but a wet paper towel and the micro remedied that. The curry, was delicious. It was a decent thickness with good flavor not watered down. The pad Thai was good, and so was the green papaya salad. I also enjoyed the mango w/ sticky rice. My family enjoyed the meal so much that some of my kids were too full to even have birthday cake. I would recommend this restaurant.

I got sick after eating here! I'm tempted to call to have a health inspection, but it is a small business. I'm hoping they read this and do their own cleanup.

In relation to, "Mai Thai Cuisine"... I'm like Jean-Claude Van Damme, still learning how to stretch before Chuck Norris comes over & sits down at the head of the dinner table. I ordered a New Chiang Mai Thai Spicy Delight. The dish was abundant and the savory flavors exploded ( I ordered my dish "spicy" ) within my palate like Chinese New Year... OMG... I wanted to take some food to go, but I kept indulging one bite after another. Before I knew it, I needed to cool down from the fireworks of flavors and ordered a few local beers as I contemplated whether or not to order dessert... Time was essential, so I skipped dessert and "Skip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" for another day...

The food is very good! We enjoyed having dinner here, everything we ordered tasted good and fresh. The food portion is big, the price is reasonable for the amount of food you get, delicious flavor. Would like to come back and try new things. Good service, relaxing environment.

Arrived on a Saturday night at 8pm, an hour before closing. Our waitress was visibly annoyed upon our arrival. Another family came in after us and the waitress was very exasperated that they came in. When trying to close out, approached waitress who was on her phone at the bar and was not met with kindness/hospitality. The food was just ok at best but the customer service was honestly just shocking.

I was treated poorly multiple times by the same waitress. I was ignored and literally not spoken to at all, just a mean silent look. I watched them cheerfully interact with other costumers on both occasions. As a trans woman, I just guessed they had a bad day at first and it wasn't personal. The second time I came in with a trans friend and it happened again, months apart. The mean looks, lack of service, and the literal silent othering made it extremely uncomfortable for us both. I won't come again and will advise any queer or trans friends to stay away.

RUDE AF!! We got seated, 2 of us. We sat there for 25 minutes. Lady slammed our waters on the table, but eh, at least we the waters. They sat two families after us. TOOK THEIR ORDERS FIRST. We left. Never again.

Our party of eight had a good experience at New Chiangmai Mai Tai for dinner on a weeknight evening. The roasted duck dish was fabulous. Very layered and flavorful. Other hits were BBQ pork, yellow curry, chicken satay and papaya salad. Those who ordered their spice level Asian hot were not disappointed. Service was a tad slow and scattered but got the job done. Vibe was a bit mellow, almost family restaurant with a bar but maybe we dined too early (6:30 pm) before things pick up.

Good lord this place has the flavor, portions and lovely staff. After hiking a rigorous 4 mile loop at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Trip we decided to dodge the tourist trap Thai and get back to Hilo. When I placed my order over the phone the place sounded packed, always a good sig. The woman handing me my order was radiating kindness and a genuine spirit. My order was a ready a few minutes earlier than quoted. We unpacked our yellow pumpkin curry , sticky rice and pad Thai and were in heaven. It was delicious and could only finish 60%. I will definitely return on future trips. Jah Bless the entire staff for a wonderful experience.

Terrible experience. Server took our order and never came back to the table again, not even with the one soda I ordered. I had to go up and get my drink and ask for the bill. They double charged us on the bill. Do not recommend.

This restaurant was recommended by an employee of Volcano Winery and she was right on point. The Hot and Sour soup is delicious! The curry is excellent. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Met a local in the Hilo area while visiting the big island and she said that she worked at this Thai location and recommended that I come over as people always tell her it's the BEST Thai food in the whole island. Well, I had already tried two Thai location in Hilo and wasn't very impressed yet so so didn't expect a whole lots from this location but I was so wrong!!! The food was filled with amazing flavor - curries were creamy and pad Thai wasn't just sweet ketchup like some other locations. The local was actually working at the time and saw me and gave me free drinks as well. Make sure to try the LILIKOI drinks!!! They are so good!! Oh also the egg rolls were BOMB.

Know that if you check in on yelp online you can get a free drink. Of course, we went for complimentary Thai teas. They were very sweet but delicious! The portion sizes were huge and lots of vegetarian options were available! We ordered the chiang mai fried rice, pad see ew and buddha rama curry. The pad see ew was a little too bland for my liking but the curry and fried rice were delicious! We had enough for lunch the next day. We came early for dinner around 6pm and were glad we did because there was a wait after a few minutes. One downside to this place was the parking situation. Free parking is available on the street that the restaurant is located on. We didn't have trouble because we came early, but it looks full when we left dinner. There is a community center right there where a lot of homeless people hang out, but I think that's a common story in Hilo.

Food EXCELLENT , Love the mile chicken pad Thai, all of the curry are excellent as well sweet rice, mango dessert and Thai tea with coconut milk are my to go's every time I'm in town, I live on the other side of the island The staff it's good. Picked up some appetizers to take to a party. Service was fast, friendly, and portion size was good for the price. I got shrimp spring rolls, chicken satay, and fried wontons. The shrimp spring rolls were really good with lots of shrimp, which seems like an unusual variation for Hilo where spring rolls are usually pork or vegetable. I was told the satay were good but they disappeared before I could try them. Same with the fried wontons.
