I am happy we got to head to this delicious place! I have been a handful of times but hadn't really had the chance to sit and enjoy the space or the live music! It was great. This place has my fave TOP 3 pasta and it's my go-to whenever I'm in the area now. I love how authentic the people, music, crowd, and ambiance is. Old school Greenbelt is really comforting, hippieville, and lots of nostalgia that anyone can get to love. Nothing beats that! Cheers to my bestie who came to catch up and celebrate and we both had gifts 🎁 to give! I'm super happy she decided to catch up and celebrate my belated birthday. This was super fun 🥹👏🏾💯! If you love laughs, authentic food, having a good time, and all in Greenbelt supporting the community you'll love this restaurant. Stop by, rate, and repeat 😎.

Loved visiting for the live music with Low Rent Quartet!! The band is amazing!! They should be there much more often, not just once a month. Awesome venue! Great atmosphere!

Plenty of character. Worth a visit before the movie! 09/12/25 Update A return visit 7 years later! Good attentive service, but please cheer up folks! My wife and I both had pasta. Salmon and Chicken versions. Both very good and seemed freshly cooked. My chicken seemed to me to be a nice mild Cajun style with sun dried tomato. Chicken may have been marinated? Not hot or spicy. Recommended.

Food was surprisingly very good! I had the grilled avocado halves filled with Pico de gallo, sweet corn and sauteed fresh lump crab. You get really nice sized portions and the food was even plated very nicely! Just LOOKING at the food you'd think you were in a more upscale place. Put the environment was a true let down. I could get past the 2nd hand furniture. But the SMELL of the place! It smelled old, stale and dank! The service: well I'll just say, don't look to get service with a smile. You're not going to get the warm and fuzziest here!

New Deal has good food, and get a lot of great bands - some of the best in the entire DMV!

Curious place where everybody might know your name. Very reasonable prices, live music 6 days a week. A very personal peek into the lives of the people of greenbelt. Take a walk around and wonder.

Great local spot to enjoy music and good food with a coffee or beer. It’s awesome to have a nice dining option so close with entertainment.

Ordered a standard latte and was served essentially just milk and ice. I don’t know if the barista just didn’t put the espresso in my cup or they only give you one shot for 16oz of milk, but my latte had no coffee flavor at all.

The guacamole was very nicely seasoned. The salmon was delicious. We couldn't find an empty seat in the music room but we were able to watch the show in the front room on the big screen TV. Friendly patrons, friendly staff and very friendly prices. Even parking is free in a large lot. Love this location for dining and music.

Service was nice and burger was satisfying however the chili was the worst I have tasted. It smelled like cigarette smoke and tasted terrible

Looks closed from the side or back, and opens late(8-830). Comfortable couches and outdoor seating. Limited breakfast menu. Just 4 items. Bagels, flat bagels, bagels egg and meat, or oatmeal. Bagel and coffee were good. Only plain cream cheese. Service with a smile.

At last, I returned for live music! It turns out they do karaoke once a month -- something really hard to miss amidst their almost daily live performances. I had to show up, and I finally got to see that back space! The vibe is totally different from the chill patio and cafe spaces in the front. The back area legitimately feels like a neighborhood bar. It was full when I got there -- it was probably about 40 people seated. The band has a perfect stage, and the sound was excellent. It's obvious that many of the patrons are regulars, as many random folks greeted and hugged each other. Folks sang, and the band had great energy. Live band karaoke really needs to become more popular... I'm just glad I have it so close to home :). While enjoying the show, I got a LARGE Southwest bowl and added BBQ tofu & avocado. It was delicious -- but I was still hungry after! But to be fair, I really didn't have any food beforehand that day. I got a side of mac & cheese too that was tasty. I have to say, New Deal Cafe is pretty versatile now that I've fully observed the things. It's got the patio and cafe if you want to work (yay free wi-fi), and the back area if you want music and a bar scene. It honestly doesn't get much better than that. It's... a hidden gem for sure, and the only spot like this in Old Greenbelt. By the way, since my last review, I indeed quit Pokemon Go. :)

I never leave reviews, but this place was terrible. 1st the young lady taking our seemed to be annoyed that we were bothering her. I ordered spring salad with grilled chicken. This salad is literally the bag mix from the grocery store with sauted chicken. Very disappointing.

Come and stay here for the live music and the ambience! Jazz was in town when I visited the cafe today, which is one of my fabric genres of music. The coffee was free (temporarily) and the cafe had locals in them. This is a great place to chill at.

I just went to the New Deal after the farmer's market and it was an extreme let down. First the Greeter lady with a face full of piercings must have been high, tired, didn't care, or all of the above because she couldn't even take the time to look at us while we ordered the food. Then we ordered their spring Salad with Chicken, which is supposed to have tomatoes and onions and the works, but instead all we got was a if bag spring mix and chicken that was most likely frozen. No added vegetables, no dressing, just straight up Spring Mix that you could have bought from Giant. I won't be coming here again and I will be sure to steer my peers away should the place come up again. If 0 stars were possible that's what I would give.

Five stars because it's the best I know of for what it is. But the new food 'vendor' for the last year is hit or miss. Some dishes are like quality cafeteria food, others like the grilled avocado are poor renditions of fancy new American cuisine. Our avocado was overripe, we struggle to eat the $10 dish. The chocolate cake was old and stale (it's a large commercial cake they cut up). I sympathize it's hard to run a low/medium volume food establishment, but we might stick with salmon and the tatertots next time. Music is the reason to come, and it's often under-capacity. We had front table seats for a great band.

Great little spot! I have been here a handful of times over many years. The live music is such a good reason to come here! The food is pretty good as well, and I love all of the vegetarian and vegan options. Will definitely return.

I always love going to the New Deal Cafe as the atmosphere is absolutely electric! Every visit has been an over the top ... experience from start to finish with great bands and a delightful memory making time. There is no cover charge, however, the bands request a donation for their time. There is food, and, although it isn't the highlight of the evening, it makes the experience complete.

Food: Ive been here three times now specifically for the burger, before heading over to the pool next door. Juicy and saucy and perfectly simple! Service: the people behind the counter are super friendly and make you feel like you're eating at your hometown food spot (even if you drove 45 minutes) Ambiance: the vibes here are great, full of music memorabilia and signs advertising the next band to play. Unfortunately Ive only gone by early in the day, but i intend to come back for music pronto!

Service: fine; Ambiance: excellent live music; Food: My wife and I tried a couple of items this evening. The black beans with rice are well seasoned and well prepared. The white sauce on the pasta was in need of seasoning.

This spot in Greenbelt reminds me of a gathering place that is laid back and where good-natured people come. The coffee is great, and a variety of food offerings are enough to satisfy. If you are looking for evening events, go to their .com for upcoming events. If you need to take a break from the busyness, there are comfy sofas and chairs waiting for you!! And let's not forget the outdoor 'plaza'. Definitely recommend!

A friend and I found everything we got to be fresh and full of flavor including the bowl, salad (I forget what dressing I got, but it was delicious), and crispy tater tots. We liked the variety of things to choose from, and servings were generous. The staff was friendly and helpful. The decor was admittedly unimpressive- but if I was local I'd be a regular for food I enjoyed and felt good about eating, and to support this great local business.

I have noticed when I order at the New Deal Cafe, the counter and waitstaff aren't friendly. I realize they are relatively new to working with the New Deal Cafe regulars, but, honestly, be a little friendly!

I am currently on a fruits and veggies only fast & was in the mood for some good Vegan food. After going to, and realizing that one of the local Vegan spots close to my neighborhood had closed down, I immediately ran to my trusted Yelp for suggestions and stumbled on New Deal Cafe, which was near by. This location is in a rustic, quaint looking part of Greenbelt that I had never been to. Upon entering I noticed that there weren't many patrons. They did offer outdoor seating, they have indoor diner/carry out style seating with a television & a couch and a really fun looking second area of the restaurant with a bar, a stage for karaoke I'd assume, and restaurant style seating, which I'd assume is for dinner service. The good: The food. I got the three bean vegan chili which was absolutely delicious. The Vegan PB&J smoothie and they allowed me to add two shots of espresso, and switch the Soy milk(recipe) to Oat Milk bc I try to avoid Soy as much as possible & kept the price the same. That was really awesome of them. My smoothie was amazing. I also had the potato wedges as well. The Bad: Well, I really wanted the Vegan Chik'n tacos and couldn't try them bc it was the beginning of their day and hadn't been prepared yet. That bummed me out a little bc I am hardly ever in Greenbelt. That said, I had a really good experience and will make a concerted effort to visit New Deal Cafe again. That 3 bean chili was just that good.

Elote corn bites were good Greenbelter smoothie was decent Large southwest bowl was disappointing - imo it's missing greens. Rice, beans and pico feels like a side but for $11 I was expecting something that felt complete on its own My fault tho I ordered on the toast app and wasn't paying attention. There's no description but I coulda looked closer at the pic Quick service and great customer service tho Grabbed a muffin, cookie and piece of carrot cake that all look goood

The staff were very friendly. I can in randomly on a Friday night, the band had the place JUMPING lol! I got chicken tenders and onion rings and they were great! The tenders had a crunch almost like a regular piece of fried chicken and oddly enough, the onion rings were juicy! They definitely had crunch and was fried really good but as soon as I bit into one, there was onion juice dripping down my chin. I'd definitely come back!

What a great find!! Yummy vegetarian food, variety of drinks, and live music (at least on Thursday)! People were dancing and conversing and having a great time! Menu was limited but new and fuller menu comes Nov 1!

Question: What's the dealio New Deal?! Answer: Everything's good! Happy Happy Joy Joy, I finally made my way to the Greenbelt area to try out New Deal Café, it was all that & then some! I cannot recall having unknown friends (strangers) sitting on a patio extending me salutations as I walk into a restaurant, thank you my new UF. My arrival got even better as Raul & his pleasant chi welcomed me, gave me a menu to look over while he took non stop orders & worked the register. One would think while I was waiting in line I would have my order ready to go, I did not. Yet, my new friend Raul, told me no worries & gladly shared some of the café's favorites in the interim of making up my mind. I even got input from the frequent customers waiting behind me. I regained my foodie composure, placed my order & patiently salivated until my food to arrive. The lovely Allison, who serves as the Server, Traffic Controller & anything else necessary was a gem assisting the customers. After you place & pay for your order you get a table number & can sit anywhere in the café or on the spacious covered patio. The café has front & back sections with the front having tables & chairs, two black leather couches & a huge circular table where you can enjoy their complimentary books & games. The back offers a full service bar, regular/communal style tables & a stage for live music. The menu offers an entire plant based Italian-American cuisine, including beer, wine, desserts & swag you can order from their website. My delightful order: * The Cauliflower Wings made Buffalo style & with Ranch Dressing - DELISH! * The King Trumpet Calamari made out of lightly fried Mushrooms & Sunflower Parmesan - DELISH! * The savory Pulled BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich - DELISH! Also can be made as a bowl. * The plentiful slice of Carrot Cake - INSATIABLY DELISH! My only regret is that I did not order double portions of the Cauliflower Wings & Calamari. As a plant based establishment, I appreciate the Allergen Legends throughout the menu as the café offers guidance to accommodate sensitivities. Do note, all menu items are prepared on shared equipment that processes Wheat, Gluten, Soy, Seeds & Nuts. Hours of Operation: Tuesday - Thursday: Full menu until 9P, Bar Snacks 9:30P Friday - Saturday: Full menu until 10P, Bar Snacks 11P Sunday - Full menu until 9P Weekend reservations ae strongly suggested. They are accepted until 8:30pm, held for twenty minutes & may not be confirmed until the next day. Same day reservations are taken via telephone only. This nugget of a Vegan café is in the middle of the historic Roosevelt Center nestled within the Old Greenbelt neighborhood. Although parking is free, the center of the parking lot has two-hour spaces with more parking available behind the Roosevelt Center. If traveling via Metro, exit the Greenbelt Station - Green Line, its a 5-7 minute drive or 20 minute bus ride. The menu comes from Michael & Leah Moon, who also run DC Vegan Catering now partnering as cooperative. I will schlep my way back to New Deal Café as much groovy vibe will be absolutely worth the travel.

Food is good and appropriately priced. Service is polite. Not super fast but not slow.

3.5. Over the last few years, I've developed a taste for meat alternatives. Decided to check this place out. The inside is simple and quiet. Several people appeared to be studying or doing work. The young man at the register was friendly and helped me decide what to get based on my expressed preferences. I was excited to see they offered Beyond Burger. I could have gotten it on a bun, but decides to do it over brown rice--the 'bowl' option. The meal consisted of a scoop of brown rice, beyond meat patty, pinch of spring salad, fried onions, mayo and ketchup. I realize typing this is a strange combo, kinda. I'm a fan of strange combos. However, the general concept and execution was unremarkable. I paid $12 for a patty over brown rice. While I'm no top chef, I tend to regret paying for meals I can do myself, perhaps even better. The flavor profile was a bit boring.. brown rice and a patty. The presentation was cute though. They have some other dishes that sound good, I think I'll be back to give them a redemptive chance.

This spot was very cute and quaint. Delicious for ppl are vegan or who enjoy occasional vegan food (like myself). I went on the 4th Saturday of the month, they have a live jazz band there and they sounded great. My only disappointment is that I wanted to try the jackfruit bbq and they didn't have during this time because they only serve brunch fare on the weekends until 4pm. I will definitely come here again when I'm in the mood for vegan food!

Foods pretty good, service is fine. But the main reason to come to the Nude Eel is the MUSIC. They have great bands. And they are careful to keep the volume down - I hate places where the music drowns out everything. I love this place and hope it will be there forever.

First time here. Made reservations they were very friendly over the phone. Once at Resturant we also received good customer service which is sooooooo hard to find now days. The food came promptly and was hot and delicious. It got very crowded. Nice atmosphere nice menu. I'm definitely coming back for the yummy yummy food I had the Italian sausage the BBQ cauliflower and three bean chili. Yummy to my tummy.

I went today 4/10 for lunch, I ordered a bowl of tomato soup and the double cheeseburger the soup was great the burger not so much. The problem started when I asked the very nice young man at the counter for an extra side of aioli or mayonnaise for my burger and he said no problem and went in the kitchen to ask for an additional side. I then heard the Chef "say it's already on there" and I'm assuming the female was the manager or the owner saying " this is a business we don't give stuff away for free" she obviously didn't realize I could hear her entire conversation. She was rude! I never asked for it to be free I would have paid the fifty cents for a side of mayo. Her lack of customer service turned me off... I won't go back.

Went back a couple weeks ago after having found out they have new management and have gone vegan! Superb! I had a jackfruit BBQ sandwich which was a bit too sweet as other reviewers have stated, so hopefully they will adjust their sauce before long. My friend had their Italian sausage sub, which had good flavor and texture, although I try to avoid the vegan faux meats these days. My friend felt it was as good as the real thing. I'd suggest to the chef to add more side options that are healthier (vs fries) and improve some of their dishes her feedback here. Overall, a cool little spot that features live music on most evenings.. definitely a nice addition to their local area. Will be back again to see how they grow their menu.

Under new management. The Moon family has brought delightful vegan to Greenbelt. It exceeds all of my expectations. I can't say enough about the tasty and adventurous menu. Wonderful! Fabulous! You must go out of your way to try it.

This food was spectacular! The buffalo cauliflower "wings" were a group favorite--even a non-vegan was impressed. The ranch served on the side was amazing also. I wish this restaurant operated nationwide so everyone could enjoy some delicious vegan comfort food!

Ordered taco but had little cilantro and when I asked for more they were going to charge me. The ambiance was nice. Outdoor cafe.

I live nearby, and I'm not sure why I haven't tried this place sooner, but I know why I won't go back. I there last Sunday (Nov. 28). I sat down at the bar. There was a waitress talking to a friend and I had to speak up to get her attention. She said I could eat at the bar but I had to go up to the front desk to get a glass of wine (don't know why she couldn't do so -- isn't that her job? ) Not only that, but I had to pay in advance. I got the wine (took a while), grabbed a menu, and went back and sat down. I saw nobody for close to a half hour. Not so much as someone poking her head in the door. After reading about the music, I had expected to spend a fair amount of time in the cafe. Not gonna happen.

New Deal Cafe is certainly not to be visited for the food, but instead to see and understand one of the few results of the Garden City movement in the US. The little community that exists inside of this unique greenbelt is something to pause for a moment about. What if places like this replaced strip malls and suburbs? I tried the falafel pizza and it was not amazing but... it was ok. It's probably best to just go with hummus and pita. Anyway, I actually like the idea that Lebanese food is infiltrating and people can have more exposure to Middle East culture. Also, the hot cocoa kettle was awesome.

Very excited to see this place up and running again. Still working out the kinks, but the staff was friendly and the sausage/egg/bagel sandwich was really great. Need a few more kids options, especially for drinks. Looking forward to seeing this place back up to capacity with a bigger menu. So far, so good, though.

This is a great spot for a light meal and live bands in Greenbelt. The food isn't necessarily gourmet, but the hush puppies, Brussels sprouts, and veggie lasagna are pretty good.

The newest version of the New Deal Cafe seems to have finally got it right. The menu has a lot more variety than the previous Lebanese restaurant and the staff is very friendly and helpful. It's also more organized, nicer looking, and has better seating and a bigger stage, compared to the even older New Deal Cafe of 8+ years ago. The current menu is mostly American food, but with some interesting options such as fish tacos, steak with chimichurri sauce, cajun chickpea burger, sundried tomato hummus, and a good beer and wine selection. Some of the food missed the mark, like the nachos (chips with salsa verde poured over and no melted cheese or toppings), the fries (originally thick cut potato wedges back in January and frozen pre-cut fries on our most recent visit), and the tortilla soup (pretty much chili), but I think they're still fine tuning the new menu. The prices are very reasonable, and we accidentally ordered too much food our first visit because we were expecting smaller portions. They also now serve locally roasted Vigilante coffee and desserts by neighborhood bakery Chef Lou's. Under the new ownership, some of the great things that I always liked about this place have stayed the same, such as the cool rotating displays of local art, good local music on most nights, and the neighborhood crowd. On weekend nights, the bands draw a very lively and engaged crowd that guarantees a good time!

This is an amazing place for vegan food and beyond. I just wanted a quick bite to eat and check a nearby cafe and NEW DEAL popped up, I'm not vegan but prefer vegan food at times. This place is under new management. The menu says PIANTA at NEW DEAL. Very cozy neighborhood cafe with reeeeeaaaallll good food, service and events (tell by the flyers in the wall) I can tell they are really invested in their place, place is comfy and have a homey feel. Coffee is GREAT as well as the food, VERY CLEAN GREAT FOOD. There are a lot of paintings on the wall for sale, I can tell this cafe is many people's favorite cafe. Wish I lived nearby so I can make it one of my favorite as well :)

Great bagel sandwiches! I always like the oat man smoothie, too. It's so nice to have a good coffee shop in Roosevelt Center!

Haven't been there since the new cafe food started. It's a great community resource though and I recommend going in and giving it a try when COVID Allows.

Greenbelt, I love you! I had been wanting to explore Greenbelt and hit up the New Deal Cafe for a minute. "Greenbelt is far!" That's what I have been telling myself. Election Day 2018 was when I finally made it. I entered an environment, lively with people. I even think that there was live music. All I saw was a bar and no food jumping off there, so I made my way around the room and made a turn at some point and ended up in the cafe. It does have its own entrance, facing the theatre. Once I got to the cafe, I found out that the kitchen closes before the cafe itself. I didn't want to inconvenience anyone but they said it was cool so I ordered a Memphis BBQ Jackfruit Bowl, filled my cup of water and waited a short while for my food to be ready. It did not take the food long to arrive and it was cool. I think I prefer other regional bbq sauces, to Memphis style but that's me and my tastes. Other than that minor element, I felt good eating a green meal. Jackfruit looks like it will be heavy in the rotation and I can't wait til I return to the New Deal Cafe. Though next time I think that I'm ordering the Shredded Beet Burger.

Ok so this is for the NEW all veg food. I think it's very new. We have been local for 7 years and we enjoyed some of the food when it was middle eastern before. The food after that we didn't like. Now they have changed it again and it is so much better. I had a beyond burger and sweet potato fries and it was super good. Flavorful, fresh, and of good size. My daughter has the caprese sandwich which she thought was excellent. Tiramisu cheesecake was just ok. However, the service was quick and friendly and overall we are very pleased with the new menu. If you have not been here since April or so 2018 do yourself a favor and give another try. Much better. I like to support local and this is friendly place for all. Recommended.

So here's the deal about the new New Deal. It's pretty much the same old deal as when the New Deal was new. So is it really a new New deal? Well.. uh... yes... and no. A brief history: Conception: The New Deal opened in 1995 as a small neighborhood spot. True to the Greenbelt "left wing-psuedo socialist" ideals it's a "volunteer" run restaurant. The years pass, it becomes a hub for the Greenbelt community, they expand, there's live music, poetry readings, local art, good food and generally a really great Bohemian hot spot. Tragedy: They can't pay the bills. They close. Months pass. No Deal. Resurrection: Let's make a deal. Someone else moves in and opens a mediterranean/ Lebaniese style restaurant. Everyone seems excited. The New Deal is Back! SCREEEEEEEEECH (the sound of breaks hitting the cement) The new tenants have a fight with the ownership. The doors close again. No Deal. Epilogue: They work it out! They open again! the New Deal is new again and it looks exactly the same as the old New Deal. Same bands, same art, same chairs and tables, same customers, same Bohemian vibe. Oh and the food. It's ok. It's cheap-ish. If you've been to Lebanese Taverna, you know the menu completely. Only Lebanese Taverna does a much better job with it, but really, does it matter? The New Deal has never really been about the food, it's about the place... so for mediocre Mediterranean cuisine, it's a pretty good deal.

I've wanted to visit this place for a while, after seeing some positive reviews and ads in the local paper. The concept seems great: a small cafe which supports local music. What. A. Disappointment. This establishment lands on the list of my most awkward, "why did I come here," "I'm going to smell like a nursing home for four days" experiences. I finally found the entrance and saw what appeared to be a counter to order from. There were couches in the corner and lots and lots and lots of empty tables. A customer was literally screaming for someone to get her some ice. I might have been shocked, if I hadn't been holding my breathe because the entire place smelled like a poorly run nursing home. Musky, dirty, and a slight indication that there might be an unattended bedpan somewhere near. I'd come this far, I was going to get the full experience. I ordered from a big guy at the counter. This only made the experience worse. I didn't expect good customer service. Maybe they picked up on this and decided to meet my expectations. I wandered through a hallway past the restrooms and the kitchen (of the two, the restrooms looked cleaner). I found the music room. I'm pretty sure I stood there in awe for a few minutes. The room was large, with a stage at front. There was a man playing some relaxing guitar music on stage. And exactly one person sitting down listening. There was one other person in the room. To my right was an employee from the kitchen. She was on her phone, speaking Spanish so loud I'm pretty sure they could hear her in Guadalajara without the phone. Here was Esteban on stage, playing his heart out, one person listening to him, and this employee was screaming on the phone. It was one of the rudest displays I've every seen. Multiple restaurant workers came and went through the room; no one seemed bothered. Geez. And I haven't even gotten to the part about the food yet. If you're thinking of ordering food, I have a couple of suggestions. 1. Don't. 2. Go to your nearest supermarket and pick up some hummus and chips. In the end, this place deserves a one star or less rating. I'm giving it two because obviously some people had positive experiences here. And I fully support anyone who supports local live music.

I finally had the time to stop here for lunch. I tried the NDC Double Cheeseburger with sweet potato fries. I thought that I had ordered the single version, but oh well. The burger was impossible to eat as a burger- the bun was very soft and meat super juicy. But I don't mind eating a burger with a fork and knife, so that was fine. The burger was super flavorful and the grilled onions added just the right touch. The sweet potato fries were very skinny and a bit over done. Overall, it was an ok experience. One thing though- if ketchup is supposed to be on all of the tables, staff should check to make sure that the bottles are full. My server had to go to several tables to find one that had ketchup and when he brought me one, it had very little in it. As a former server, keeping ketchup bottles full (and clean) was an important side duty.

Tried it as a lunch stop en route to other errands in Greenbelt. Underwhelmed. The beef shawarma was dry and chewy and had a vaguely metallic taste. I checked to be sure I hadn't bitten into the surrounding foil. The pita did not seem fresh. Salad was minimal, with a few drops of lemon juice as dressing. The potato chunks were oily and flaccid. I had to remind the lady behind the counter that I had ordered (and paid for) iced tea, It reeked of the maltodextrin used to prevent powdered mixes from clotting. Had I not been starving I would not have finished the meal. But at least it killed my appetite. I've got to admit some of the coming live music sounded fun, and the listed prices for beer and wine sounded reasonable. But eat here again? Nope.
