The Best Portland-Area Distilleries to Visit for Tastings and Tours | Eater Portland

"From humble beginnings as the smallest licensed distillery in America, New Deal became the cornerstone of what is today inner southeast Portland’s Distillery Row. It’s open for tasting and flights daily from noon to 6 p.m. and though it sells hand-crafted gins, vodkas, and other liquors is still most beloved for its rye, wheat, and bourbon whiskeys, with a casual tasting area just feet away from the distillery operations. Informal tours are offered upon request." - Nathan Williams

Wife and I enjoyed the tasting and mini cocktails, had great conversation with Marie 💙, and their spirits are delicious! We bought way more bottles than planned and have zero regrets haha. Took Gin No. 1 down, as a 50th birthday gift, to a dear friend with discerning taste, down in CA and she loved it so much, she looked into having it shipped directly to her door! We’ve done tastings all over the country and this place is as good as our gets!

Caroline has taken care of us before in the past, but this time we were doing Distillery Row and she went above and beyond to make sure we got to not only try some new things but learn about the craft distillery/cocktail scene as well. Always love dropping by to pick up some Ginger and Coffee Liqueur for the home bar. Thanks again y'all!

My husband and I loved trying all that they had to offer. He really likes the Distillers Reserve Rye Whiskey, I enjoyed the Mud Puddle. Everything was good though and the workers were fantastic.

Came down from Vancouver Canada to check this place out specifically for their unique liqueurs and was very impressed with how they tasted! Bonny was absolutely delightful to talk to and extremely knowledgeable, highly recommend the spiced pear brandy, ginger liqueur, and cascara

Google
Amazing! Taste everything if you can 😀Caroline is such a delightful hostess - she guided us thru all the options and introduced us to some interesting new liquors for our collection!

Caroline absolutely made our experience here. Her knowledge of product, pairings, and humor was a sheer delight. New Deal is a very chill visit, perfect for locals and visitors alike and also a great place to buy unique gifts! Of course of the booze was absolutely delicious, highly recommend this spot!

Great selection of the distillery profucts, as well as other local craft spirits - do stop by for the Seasonal cocktails bonanza :)

Google
Popped in on a Friday afternoon. Cocktail and liquor flights available. Fun liquors like pear brandy (very real pear flavor) and coffee from local coffee. Bartender incredibly informative. Liked almost everything I tried and bought three bottles. Immediately texted everyone I know and put it on my must do list for out of town visitors.

Yelp
What's up: We here to kick off our distillery tour. With our trusty Distillery Row passport in hand, we're here to try some of their drinks. Parking: Street parking. Environment: Luckily we got here early, because they were closing early for a private event later that night. Caroline was funny and took good care of us on our Tasting Flight. Water available on the right of the counter. Merch is located to the right of the entrance. What was ordered: - Tasting Flight (6 tastings of your choice: Wheat Whiskey, Rye Whiskey, Driftwood Old Fashioned, Bierschnapps, Bourbon Whiskey, Driftwood Espresso Cocktail) - Ginger Liqueur (yummy spicy ginger flavor) - Grabbed the Rye Whiskey and Ginger Liqueur to go Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. A good start to our distillery tour. We found a couple things that we liked and grabbed a couple bottles to take with us. Credit cards are accepted.

Yelp
I am a longtime lover of New Deal's Gin No. 1 and their Hot Monkey Vodka, and have wanted to check out their distillery for a time. I cannot recommend this enough to everyone. We came on an early Tuesday afternoon, so street parking was a breeze to find. The person who was guiding our tasting was knowledgeable and had great recommendations. We enjoyed not just the spirits but hearing what inspired them and how they are made. Their bar is elegant and minimalist. We love how everything tastes as well as looks-any of their bottles looks great in a bar! We came in for one gin, and left with two, their Pear Brandy (my new favorite of theirs) and their Cascara Liqueur, which you can only get from them directly. They also have bar ware, syrups, beer, and bitters for sale in addition to their spirits. We loved this and can't wait to show off our new bottles to everyone :)

Yelp
Had an absolutely lovely time with the shop owner Tom who let us in even after closing. We got to try all of the spirits and hear about the history of each. The Bloody Mary was amazing, and the beer/whisky spirit was so wild. Thank you!!

Yelp
Awesome distillery that I'm glad I discovered on my last visit to Portland. They have a wide variety of spirits and I was able to taste everything without even being charged a tasting fee. The woman working the tasting room that day was super-friendly and knowledgable. Every single thing I tasted was good. The one that really surprised me, which I didn't expect to like, was the ginger liqueur. I was afraid it would be too sharp/pungent, but it was incredibly smooth and will make a great base for some mixed drinks.

Yelp
I went on a rainy Sunday afternoon so it was empty inside. The front of the room is the drinking area and the back is the distillery equipments. We ordered the holiday special flight(3 cocktails for $15) and the regular 5 for $15 flight. The holiday special was strong but delicious. My favorite was the warm one (forgot the name). When you order the flight of 5, they bring it out in the order of light to dark. My favorites were the pear brandy and the cherry liqueur. Both were sweet but full of alcohol :D The distillery equipments looked big and complex. I wish they gave us a tour and explained how alcohol is made

Yelp
First class craft distillery. Cool little tasting room. Well worth a visit. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Get into the spirits with vodka, whiskey, gin, bourbon, liqueurs and a few I likely forgot about catching a delicious buzz. Straight up shots, infused mixed drinks, tasters, whatever your preference. It's a grand tasting room and distillery with barrels and barrels of spirits with barrels and barrels of a convivial spirit. Everybody so chatty cuz the spirits in them! He-haw! And you can buy a bottle or two to go. We did! If you really want to get into spirits deeper, they (owner) will teach you in about a five hour class the process of fermentation, distillation and barrel aging whiskey. We loved it. Want to go back and try another tasting. And hey, that says a lot because we're mainly IPA drinkers.

Yelp
I would like to consider myself a gin afficionado but truly I just like to drink gin. Before moving to Portland, the only distillery I had tried was St. Augustine, FL, which was good but about 8 hours from where we lived before. My husband bought me a bottle of New Deal's #33 for Mother's Day (I have two toddlers don't judge) and being only a top shelf drinker I was intially very critical of it. It is WAY better, in my opinion, than the Bombay Sapphire I was used to. Smooth and great light flavor it really delivers in a G&T, Negroni or a Gin Martini. We have visited the distillery several times. Only once, without my kids. They are ALWAYS super kind to the kids, giving them paper to draw on, water and just being exceptionally friendly. Every time we have been the drinks are perfect and the service and atmosphere are laid back and fun. It's a beautiful facility and they have awesome tastings. I highly recommend it!! 1.12.20 THANK YOU New Deal for saving my day. I needed a REALLY good Bloody Mary (and your flight has 3...why have 1 great Mary when you can have 3!!!) And after having an AWFUL (truly sub par) Mary your flight saved the day. And I got some Hot Monkey and Portland Bloody Mary mix too. Love this place!!!

Yelp
Stopped by for a tasting, and it was amazing! Meg, Melissa, and Asia were super friendly and knowledgeable. Despite being very busy, they were able to rotate throughout my tasting without skipping a beat. The air smelled delightful, as they were milling pears for their pear brandy. My favorite was the pear brandy. It was all really tasty! I look forward to coming back and trying more things in the future.

Yelp
Such a fun place! Went on an impromptu distillery crawl and ended up here... and SO grateful for it. The bartender was amazing (her name escapes me, ugh) -- she was super friendly and so knowledgeable! She was super chill and really cool to talk to, as well as made some really delish drinks. Really enjoyed their various flights... especially the Bloody Mary flight! It's a pretty cool space -- it's just the right size with the bar area and a separate communal table top in the space. The only thing is that it can get really warm in here as there's no a/c.

Yelp
Had no idea that Portland has an entire distillery thing going as well. Thank you Simon K. for the recommendation. Guessing the name has to do with the Depression era program. Parking is plentiful on the streets outside. The inside looks almost like a museum, with the truss roof and nice round looking barrels. Gives the place some street cred. The guy behind the counter was super friendly and more than helpful. When we couldn't decide what to try, he recommended the cocktail menu ($12). Sold. There is seriously some smooth liquor going on here. While my buddies and I tried 6 different liquors, 2 stuck out: the New Deal Rye whiskey, and the Hot Monkey pepper vodka. That rye really is something special. There is a reason the bottle is half the size for the same price as the others. Meanwhile, the Hot Monkey is great for adding some kick to any kind of cocktail. Great for mixing in Caesars (yes I'm Canadian) and Bloody Marys. New Deal is part of the $20 Portland Distillery Passport program. This thing pays for itself after visiting just 2 distilleries! Highly recommended. The best part is that many of them are within stumbling (er, walking) distance of each other. Not sure how all of the other distilleries in town compare, but this place set the standard for my buddies and me. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Go here to support a local distillery, but more importantly check out that HOT MONKEY! Spicy infused vodka = awesome Bloody Mary. Too bad they cant ship to CA, our bottle is almost all gone. The rest of the tasting was good as well and everyone was super friendly.

Yelp
We came here with our whisky passports and were given the option of 5 tastings or a signature cocktail. I chose their signature Moscow Mule. I was bored with all the little sips we got at the other distilleries and wanted a yummy drink, my favorite, which they offered. That was a good choice because their ginger vodka is amazing! The distillery is much bigger than it looks and they sell a ton of different spirits, big and small, in their gift shop area. I walked away with a few small bottles of the ginger vodka, but I'm really wishing now that I'd bought a large bottle. Served on ice, it is amazing! If you love ginger like I do. There is plenty of street parking and it's walking distance from the other distilleries we tried. I'd really recommend buying the $20 passport and taking advantage of all 12 distilleries. Those tastings usually run at least $10/each, so you do the math!

Yelp
I enjoy visiting Portland they have excellent breweries but this time around I wanted to try something new. I didn't realize Distillery has tasting rooms. We found out when we visited Leavenworth and wanted to give it a shot if Portland had one. Sure enough they did. They had several distillery that has a tasting room. We made a great choice, we got to meet the owner/maker. He is very polite and helpful. During our visit he didn't charge for tasting. We could taste most of his products. I'm not an expert but most of his product are smooth. I did purchase the Coffee Liqueur. Very well made, can't taste the alcohol and be careful while having a this drink. It will get you because you will think its just coffee. I will be back.

Yelp
Outstanding spirits and super friendly service with a great ambiance. Plus, they do cocktail flights for $15. Highly recommend

Yelp
After a few more visits here and purchasing their bottles of the years, New Deal is my favorite of the local Portland distilleries. The staff are always friendly and helpful in explaining more about their spirits. The tasting room has a cool ambiance. The spirits and the mini cocktails are always delicious. You really can't go wrong with any of the mini cocktails here. I love anything that has their coffee liqueur or their New Cascadia liqueur. If you only have time for one distillery, this is the spot to come to!

Yelp
I visited the beautiful city of Portland last weekend, and of all the breweries and distilleries that I came to enjoy, this one was by far my favorite! What made this one stick out over all the other distilleries is the idea that they're giving you a portion size of a mixed drink, instead of just their version of vodka etc. by itself. However; their vodka was very smooth and crisp by itself. It was raining when my girlfriend and I came in, which was nice because we were given a warm welcome, and Lucas got us started with drinks immediately. After the drinks we even got to enjoy a nice chat, something you don't really get from your every day busy bartender. After getting the drinks, I immediately posted pics because of how presentable everything was. I know the staff here reads yelp and enforces feedback because not even 5 minutes later, Amanda and Lance came by to hang out and give us shot glasses! Drinks were great! Everything was impeccable and with full flavor. I enjoyed the White Russian, Moscow Mule, Bloody Mary, and a few others that I can't remember. But make sure you don't leave without enjoying at least those three I mentioned. You will not be disappointed! Overall, drinks were amazing, and so were the staff. This was the only place where I went out of my way to remember names. You all did well. Thanks for the experience!

Yelp
Friendly and helpful service, great products, and good music; we had a great time at New Deal Distillery. We walked here from not too far away; I wish I had known in advance that we would be walking through a massive tent-city to get here. At one point, both sidewalks were completely blocked. Luckily, we were on a small-ish side street and it was not busy, so I walked in the middle of the street. It felt a little like The Walking Dead, to be honest! Anyhow, we were rewarded with delicious tastings at the distillery. Jim G. enjoyed the Spirits Tasting Flight and I did a Mini-Cocktail Flight. Both of us really enjoyed the Hot Monkey, which is a chili-infused Vodka. We had to buy some of that to take home with us! I enjoyed the Negroni Blanc (made with their Portland Dry Gin), the Muddy Russian (delicious mix of Mud Puddle Bitter Chocolate Vodka, their coffee liqueur, and cream) and the Hot Blooded (bloody mary with their Hot Monkey vodka). Being the lush that I am, the mini-cocktails were too weak, but the flavors were delicious! We learned about their spirits, some of the liquor laws in Oregon, and had a nice time chatting up some of the employees. I'd definitely make New Deal Distillery a place to stop in if you're in PDX.

Yelp
We were visiting Portland and decided to visit this distillery. My husband loves a good gin and this place had some pretty good reviews on them. From the moment we walked in, service was spot on. My husband picked a flight of 3 gin drinks. I chose the pre selected Bloody Mary flight. Bloody Mary Flight I absolutely loved the Bloody Mary with gin. I didn't even realize that's what I was drinking but it was so so smooth. I loved it so much I bought the mix they use and the Portland number 1. The spicy one wasn't that great imo. I still drank it of course but it just wasn't worth it to me. The third Bloody Mary was decent! I just really loved the one made with gin most My husbands flight used each of their 3 gins. He fell in love with their tonic mixture and their Portland 33 gin so he also ended up buying the ingredients to make this. We left happy with our experience. The ladies at the bar were very friendly and nice to chat with. Overall this was a stop we were happy to make on our trip

Yelp
New Deal is a great distillery that is included in the Portland distillery passport (only $20 for free tastings at all included distilleries). The bartenders are wicked friendly and will explain their spirits in as much (or little) detail as you wish. What I also found unique about New Deal was their mini cocktails. Instead of doing the tasting that is included with the passport, you can upgrade to 3 mini cocktails for a nominal fee. My favorites were the Muddy Russian and the Negroni Blanc as they were made with the perfect blend of spirit and mixer. You could taste the high quality spirit in some of your favorite classic cocktails (Manhattan, vodka martini, G&T, moscow mule, negroni, and muddy Russian).

Yelp
Of all the distilleries I went to over the weekend I was in Portland, this was, for some reason, the only one that was particularly busy - and based on their sign asking us to sign in (the only place that had something like that posted), that might be typical. The waiting was a little weird - when they're busy (which might or might not be always), they queue up tastings in batches of people, so you can't just walk in and start tasting, it took a few minutes to get a spot. Was worth it, though, as they make some pretty great stuff. It's also a bit pricier than average - $10 to try 5 things; the distillery passport comps trying 3 things, or cuts it down to $5 to try 5. That said, if you buy a bottle, they also take $5 off your tasting, which means if you have a passport and also buy a bottle, your full tasting is comped. I was also very happy that this place had minis of most of their selection (more places needed to do that!), and buying 4 minis counted as buying a bottle, so I bought 4 minis and my tasting was comped - thanks! This was also one of the places that had way more than 5 things I wanted to try, so it was a hard choice, and I would totally come back to try the rest of them. The things I tried: * A 2yr aged rum that was very good. Not the best rum I'd ever had, but very good. Super smooth. * Same thing with their bourbon - I've had better, but I've also had much, much worse. Totally enjoyable bourbon. * Gin #1, "in the garden style" - was very very sippable, just bursting with all kinds of botanical flavors. One of the best gins I had that weekend. * A chocolate vodka - surprisingly, not at all sweet, like they just packed it to the brim with baking chocolate, as it's not sweet, but is *very* cocoa-y. Not necessarily for sipping, but would be highly useful in cocktails where you want to bring out chocolate notes without making it too sweet like chocolate-based drinks often are. Highly recommended. * A pepper vodka, again, not something I'd sip, but fantastic for mixing. Was perfectly balanced with smoky chipotle flavors as well as just the right amount of heat (you could definitely feel the capsaicin, but it won't burn your mouth off). I'm kind of sad now, thinking about it as I write this review, that I didn't buy a larger bottle of this one - it really is one of the best-blended pepper vodkas I've had. Only had so much space in my luggage though - maybe next time. I did also try one of the mini-cocktails here - they have an unusually large selection of them, and they all looked pretty good, but the one I just had to try, the "Driftwood Manhattan", used a local vermouth inspired by African spices, so that was super unusual (and super delicious). Just wish I could've tried everything while I was there! But again, I suppose that's a good excuse to have to go back to Portland some other time. I am totally in love with Portland now (not *only* because there are so many fantastic craft distilleries, but that is definitely one of the reasons.)

Yelp
My favorite Distillery in Portland- it's always a stop when we come to visit and I always run out of what we buy too quickly :) Make sure to have fun with the tasting options! My favorites = No 1 Gin and Hot Monkey!
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
At some point I probably should have switched to actual mini-cocktails instead of sticking with the samplers of straight alcohol that came with my Passport. I want to say we sampled their basic vodka, a gin, and a rum? They were all tasty. The space is really open and lovely. And their branding is excellent. Loved the Hot Monkey logo and they were selling a horseradish vodka while I was there that I was really tempted to bring home with me. Because it was later in the day, this place was packed so while the bartenders tried to take personal care of each of us, it was a bit too crowded for that. And of course, now I see on their website that they have a dark chocolate vodka that I would love to try. They also had a good bit of merchandise for sale. Very smart!

Yelp
Very awesome atmosphere, huge tasting room because it's basically open concept to the distills in the background. It's very rustic and just all around awesome. The shot glasses are so cute, call me girly but what the hell its what I think! It's been around for 11 years. Mud puddle bitter chocolate - smells like a great chocolate with good flavor. Ginger Liquer - strong flavor, probably a bit too much but the tasting guide suggests using Moscow mule or in a hot toddy, it's difficult to drink alone. The other liquors were good. The signage? On point. Whoever designed their labels did a job well done! If I was choosing from labels, they would definitely be the one I wanted. I know, girly, but screw you guys I'm happy with it!

Yelp
Lovely distillery on a cool side street. We enjoyed a tasting that was very much a solo trip. Adorable whisky barrel tables to sit at and a nice view of the sweaty cross-fitters from the gym across the street. Haha. No big stories or guidance from the bartender but we enjoyed that. They offer a unique option where you can try the liquors in mini cocktails. Uhm Yes please! First of all they were the cutest things Ive ever seen. So much attention to detail. Second--delicious. Really cute t-shirts and other misc swag. :)

Yelp
I think I said "this place is so fun" at least 5 times while being there. I would not consider myself a liquor connoisseur by any means. I order well vodka sodas and I'm content. HOWEVER, my friend and I wanted to try something new so we decided to go to a couple distilleries after black Friday shopping. I found this place on yelp and loved the idea of their cocktail flights. When we walked in, most of the seating was taken as the building is huge though not tons of chairs/tables but we were quickly greeted by an employee who showed us to two open seats at the bar that were not being used. She gave us 3 different menus, cocktail tasting menu, fall cocktail specials and a liquor tasting menu. She gave us a quick rundown on how it works and provided some suggestions. We were able to mix and match the fall cocktails with the regular cocktails even though they are on seperate menus. I went with the Brandy Alexander, Hot Buttered Rum and Nocino Manhattan which were all the fall cocktails. I loved all of them. Naturally the manhattan was a bit strong but since this was a tasting size cocktail, it was perfect and different for me. They were all mixed so well and very tasty. The hot buttered rum was my favorite. It was very sweet but not like others I've had as they use a coconut oil/butter mix and just pour hot water over it so no additional sweet is added in and it's delightful. I would highly recommend this place and will definitely be coming back in the new year when they put out a new distillery passport book where you can go to the different ones in town, get stamps and also discounts at each distillery.

Yelp
Wide variety of spirit options (pear brandy, gins, liquors). The tasting room was pretty crowded with boxes and crates, apparently they were preparing to ship out products. We did the spirits flight - 5 selections for $10. We enjoyed one of the gins and the ginger liquor was tasty but also very concentrated and spicy (tasted like I was chewing on raw ginger root). It was nice to check out as part of our afternoon distillery hopping, but not likely to return.

Yelp
New Deal Distillery's space is beautiful and open. The two ladies who were working were very attentive. We had one lady, I wish I knew her name, who took care of us and we interacted like we were friends standing around talking and tasting delicious spirits. Every question we had was answered immediately and with a ton of explanations. It was like we had a personal guided tasting. They are genuinely so friendly and helpful. There are a few options for tastings when you arrive, which was a pleasant surprise. You can choose 5 spirits, 3 mixed cocktails, or 3 bloody marys. We decided to share the 5 spirits and 3 mixed cocktails. We chose to try Portland 88 vodka, Old Tom Gin, Portland Dry Gin 33, New Deal Rye Whiskey and ND Ginger Liqueur. As we tried these our guide (wish I knew her name!) gave us a couple of comparison tries so we would know exactly what we preferred. We knew we liked the vodka's coming into this tasting so we focused on ones we hadn't tried yet. The Rye Whiskey was a favorite of ours as was the botanical New Deal Gin No. 1. We were surprised that we enjoyed the Old Tom Gin as much as we did, but it was definitely a top contender. Our biggest issue here was that we had a hard time ranking them as they are so delicious and different from each other. Each one brings something different to your pallet and endless cocktail possibilities. If we could have taken some on the plane with us then we probably would have bought a bottle of everything we tasted, but we had already been to wineries and sadly our suitcases can handle no more liquids. Now we will head back to Atlanta and see if we can convince one of our liquor stores to start carrying New Deal spirits!!! After we were finished comparing the spirits by themselves, she made us the Moscow Mule, Gin and tonic, and a gin, soda and syrup. They were a great way to end the tasting and get us motivated for Happy Hours. I only wish we could order full drinks and just hang out in the cool space. We look forward to wearing our t-shirts and returning some day.

Yelp
So what are you drinking today, in terms of Vodka and Gin, I be drinking some New Deal, thank you very much. It's taking me awhile to come back, and to think of how I miss the alcohol at this place. I say, you people in Portland are outright spoiled, to have such a fine distillery liquoring you up in your own backyard while peasants like me have to live with commercialized mass produced junk (if you drink, you know what brands I'm talking about!) and live with it due to the fact I live too far from Portland! I'm still milking my last two bottles, and when writing this, not wanting to see the day when the bottle goes empty, which it will, and I will have to make that trek down South to refill my stash. Yes, it is that good, for all of those people who haven't tried (which would probably be all of us outsiders who are not indigineous to Portland) and don't know what quality taste like. Have you heard, they just moved! Yes, don't fret you alcoholics, they just moved a block over to a newer warehouse facility. I think this place is bigger, as I was walking over there, I noticed a new sign being hung outside, and coming in, brought me back to the first time I stepped foot into their business, a sense of excitement. In need of a drink (aren't we all in need of one, two or more most days) me and my partner quickly walked right to the bar, knowing what we were doing, and asking for a tasting. Luckily I did some research, and also knew about the Distillery Row passport, which all the participants sell, and we ended up purchasing one and our throats were open and ready to drink. This time we cancelled some of the tastings of some of the flavoured ones and strictly went for the straight vodkas and gins, and ended it off with the ginger liqueur. You might think in the back of your mind when you first get here, what is this operation, is this stuff even good, is this really where they make it, the answer is... they make good sh*t, yes, and YES! Don't worry, you don't only get to try the booze for a small fee, you get to also buy bottles of this stuff to bring back and drink at the comforts of your own home (or wherever you bring this stuff to!). Some of my favorites, after trying them again, is their botanical gin's, either the No. 1, or now the No. 33 (used to be No. 3) these are gin gems, and the smell from these two just put what you know as gin to shame. Put this gin in a whisky glass or a martini glass and this can get lethal to the nose with all the alcohol dancing in the air, that is another story that you may try! When you come across the Hot Monkey Vodka (chili infused vodka) they will let you try it plain, and also with a mixture of pineapple juice. I was sold on this vodka, whether mixing or straight.... so much good alcohol here to buy, and I don't live here, and my home doesn't have this in stores, what am I to do. And soon they will be making bourbon..... take my money... that is not a problem, only problem is I can only bring up so much through the border. Do not hesitate to come to Distillery Row... and if your going to hit one and allow your throat to indulge, do it here!

Yelp
New Deal Distillery what delight to make use of my friend's Portland Distillery Passport. One of many options is chose is to enjoy five tastings. For an early afternoon starter I tried the Reserve Whiskey, New Deal Pear Rum, New Deal Gin #1 and Portland Dry Gin #33 and one other I can't recall. Sadly, I might just like alcohol and don't quite have language to describe what I taste smell and feel. Mmm, maybe not entirely true as I am a gin fan and would recommend both gins I had opportunity to taste. New Deal Distillery or perhaps the drinking scene attracts forward moving young adults who are ready to share opinion, preferences in tastes and laugh a bit too loud (I enjoyed all). The building is a distillery but had a rustic welcome with high ceilings for laughter to fill.

Yelp
I love this distillery. The staff was upbeat and knowledgeable without being pretentious. We enjoyed their cocktail tasting options. There was something for everyone in our group. We will definitely return.

Yelp
GRAM GRAM IS RAVING over this place. GRAM can't get enough of the HOT MONKEY. I love my bloody Mary's and just like FDR, I'll be having THIS delight AT my FIRESIDE chat. I'm giving you my EXECUTIVE ORDER to buy this. ALSO. Please. Buy the GINGER liquor. I snuck a tasty little grapefruit, soda, and ginger liquor into my bible study. SO VERY GOOD GOOD. The stuff is dirt cheap. BUY THE PASSPORT. And you will have free tasting. NEW DEALS flagship vodka is called NEW DEAL vodka. It goes down like water. Vodka is Russian for "easy water" I heard. This is EASY. DONT MIX anything with this unless it's a martini. It taste so good. SO MUCH YUM. When I run low I will come back soon. Ok THANK YIU SO MUCH GOOD NEW DEAL. ~gram gram~

Yelp
We were walking by and decided to stop in to see what they offered. You can choose a tasting of their straight vodka and gin, or you can do a flight of three cocktails. We chose the flight of cocktails. There is a fairly limited menu of options for the cocktails, but when I asked if there was anything with their chocolate vodka, it was confirmed that there was nothing on the tasting menu, but they would make me a chocolate martini to try it. So glad that was an option because that martini was delicious.

Yelp
BEST BLOODY MARY EVER! Staff was friendly, had a variety of liquor to taste. Atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Anne was fantastic. We did have a small wait for the tasting but it was worth it! Highly recommend the Hot Monkey Bloody Mary, you have to try it if you are in the area!

Yelp
5 stars for the Coffee Liqueur! Their other products are equally good for what they are, but this coffee booze is the bestest! We went for a tasting flight once and it was good, but I'm not much of a drinker so it was a bit lost on me. Mostly we stop by and pick up bottles of the coffee liqueur and go, or we buy it when they're at a farmer's market. The ginger liqueur is also good, but we use it in small doses. Good folks. Good booze. New Deal is the real deal.

Yelp
Great experience here! Bought a deal of a deal website for a tasting for two and shot glasses. We got to try almost all their alcohol offerings and were treated to a mini cocktail at the end. The woman who helped us was very nice and not pushy at all. Try the hot monkey! If you can't do spicy foods, this IS spicy. Then try their metro monkey cocktail that was the hot monkey in it! It's deliciousssss and not too spicy

Yelp
Ok, this is a gorgeous space, really beautiful but there were a couple of things that jarred for us. Their tasting sizes were small, and the prices felt a little extravagant, and because you pay per taste I was more inclined to only try something if I was really, really interested. With the usual 5-pack tasting deal I'll give almost anything a shot if it looks like fun! Our tasting guide was also a bit over the top - although he was very knowledgeable and had some great suggestions for how to mix cocktails etc. he also pushed us to taste more than I wanted to. I tried the gin and their ginger liqueur and ended up taking the ginger home - it had a wonderfully strong ginger taste that I loved! The gin was great too, but alas, liquor limits... I would come back for the liquor - but it would likely be to get a cocktail rather than do a tasting.

Yelp
The team and New Deal have gone above and beyond. I am not local but they really helped me out with getting a special gift delivered to a friend for a special occasion I couldn't be there for. I cannot wait to visit the shop when I make my next trip up to Portland. Thank you all so much.

Yelp
In a city full of great breweries, New Deal stands out as a quality distillery. We decided to check out the Tasting Room and were greeted with a quaint space. There's not a ton of seating, so be ready to share the high tops. We opted for the mini cocktails which were delicious! We each got a flight of 3, so we got to sample 6 of their creations. We were in heaven. With a focus on local ingredients and small batch distilling, we could taste the care and flavor they packed into each small drink. If I was local, I would be here all the time!

Yelp
Cool place! We stopped in here while waiting for a table at a restaurant and had 'mini cocktails' for $5/each. I had already known there were distilleries all over this area, but I didn't know they all had walk-in tasting every day. The prices at every distillery for the flights or mini cocktails are more or less the same, as are their hours. While I can't vouch for any of the others, I sure can for this one. There was a sign up sheet for tasting by the door, but we skipped right by that as the joint was empty. I was sad we didn't have more time to try a whole flight of cocktails or bloody marys, but that just leaves a reason to come back. From what I saw, all the cocktails are premixed and poured, but that's perfectly acceptable and to be expected. Next time I come here I'm doing the Bloody Mary flight and probably taking an Uber so I can try all the other distilleries in the Hood.

Yelp
I am more of a fan of cocktails and they aim to please at New Deal! They have a variety of cocktails at New Deal and then a whole other list for Bloody Mary's. Plus, they have a cocktail flight if you wanted to try 3. I recommend the Distillery Passport and walk to the other nearby distilleries because why not?! $20 for 12 distillery tastings and you're about to pay for almost half of the passport at one distillery.

Yelp
Their bottle of Portland 88 vodka says this on the back: "Made by local folks for local folks. Of course, eventually we plan to rule the world" First - that's just pretty funny. And the formal italicized font definitely adds a nice "professional" touch. Well played. And B: It's safe to say you've got an army of yelpers behind you ... we plow through the streets of Portland bar by bar, seeking those that are savvy enough to carry your brand. ... Granted we'll be singing versus of "The Rose" and walking in packs up Burnside at all hours of the evening. And others of us may make up "library" words to confuse the competition or perhaps even look like small animals with mad balancing abilities (not to single out any of our strongest soldiers, but you've seen monty python. Don't be fooled by the innocent appearance of small white bunnies). Regardless, we're behind you all the way, willingly picking up your left-overs. Thank you, dear local folks, for making your vodka for us locals. We love it -- and we too hope that you someday rule the world. Can we come too? UYE? Anyone?

Yelp
I just had a great evening bottling at the distillery. We had a cocktail, tour, and a chance to bottle some of the vodka. They're wonderful, informative hosts. On weekends they have the tasting room open. Try the new cello's that they're making modeled after lemoncello. The blueberry was my personal favorite, it would pair very well with dark chocolate. The other unusual flavors such as ginger, lemongrass, and lavender were very good, as well as a more traditional tangerine. They're working on a bourbon line which I'm sure will be as good as their vodka. I look forward to sampling it as soon as it's available. Thanks again New Deal for a fun time!

Yelp
This is a cool place to spend a rainy February morning. Took the first tasting of the day and met my peeps at 11:45. It's an easy trek and an easy park is industrial SE. For $5 you get 5 tastings: we got a vodka, gin, coffee liquor, chocolate something and "hot monkey vodka" with pineapple juice. For $20, you get a passport that let's you in to 5 of the distilleries - so a savings of $5 it seems (although the pourer's rhetoric seemed to do math differently than me. The pourer was nice and knowledgeable, but way too quiet and not particularly charismatic. The other was brand new and upbeat. The pouring/tasting really only lasts about 30 minutes (and that's with a group of 9). Afterwards we had a 5 minute "tour" of all the contraptions. But it's not really a tour since you can't past a couple yards, and nothing is running so it's a bit duller than it might be. So it was cool but it's a tasting, not a tour. And not quite enough booze for me! Surprise! But for $5, it was a fun saturday activity. Can't say I'll feel the need to go there again anytime soon, unless I have visitors in town.

Yelp
There's booze and then there is BOOZE. Think your favourite mass produced hard spirit is the best in the freaking world? WRONG! Thanks to the encyclopaedic Simon K and sidekick Wendy Y, I made my way to New Deal. Walking in, you don't expect much. Cases of different booze laying around, big booze making cauldrons and other misc things one needs to moonshine (legally). My eyes find the tasting bar, manned by a pretty chill chick. Being a crazy Gin guy, I tried their Recipe 33 Dry Gin followed by my favourite, the No 1. Like the botanical elements of Gin? BAM, this gin is for you. Nothing like it. Intrigued by the sexy row of other creations, I moved on to the Muddpuddle Vodka. Perfectly balanced using cocao nibs, this sh*t is smooooth. Chocolate + vodka = smart. Now onto their infamous Hot Monkey Vodka. First try was with pineapple. Me no taste hot peppers. 2nd try straight. Mouth was BURNING! Dance monkey, dance. Slightly less violent was the Ginger Liqueur. Quite gingerly but I'm sure a great cocktail mix. I ended up buying the Coffee Liquer for its balance. Makes Kahlua and Bailey taste like a child's experiment. My only regret: I should've smuggled cases.

Yelp
This is the best place of all the dozens of distilleries we visited. Flights of ridiculously flavorful rums, whiskeys and vodkas. I HAVE to take some home, I'm going to have to check luggage for the first time in 7 years.

Yelp
We waited about twenty to twenty-five minutes for a tasting but it was worthwhile. Each taste was $1 a pour, which is comped if you end up buying a bottle or... seven. I didn't really like the idea of paying for each individual tasting... felt like they were trying to nickel and dime. Regardless, I ended up walking out with two bottles of their hot monkey vodka, as well as a bottle of the ginger liqueur and the coffee liqueur. They keep a bottle of hot monkey mixed with pineapple juice behind the counter--definitely ask for it. It is so tasty. I was a bit disappointed that they had run out of their limited bourbon but I suppose there is always a next time. Overall good place if you don't mind waiting it out for a bit.

Yelp
I came here with a friend and between the two of us, we shared tastings of all of New Deal's offerings. I was really impressed with all of the flavored liquors. The chocolate vodka had a nice, bittersweet taste--not sweet at all! The ginger liqueur tasted like fresh ginger and the coffee liqueur tasted like freshly roasted coffee. The hot monkey vodka had a great kick to it; I picked up a bottle for my brother (who love's hot sauce). It was hard to decide between the chocolate, coffee, and ginger. I ended up buying the chocolate. The lady helping us was super friendly and helpful.

Yelp
My husband and I go wine tasting a lot in Sonoma County where we live so we know what education should be like in a tasting room. We walked in and they were busy with about a group of 10-12 guys on one party. They were all being served by one girl and the other offered to serve us. She explained everything she was pouring and told us about other things in the area and comedy they were having at night. My husband and I both enjoyed itself and would return anytime. I would also recommend buying their popcorn. Yummmy

Yelp
Friendly staff, great liquor! Loved the coffee and cascara liqueur! Wound up buying several bottles to take home. We also tried the pear brandy and really enjoyed it.
