Best Off-Season Dining and Drinking in Portland, Maine | Eater Boston

"I stop at New England Distilling, where Allagash’s original head brewer Ned Wight makes award-winning spirits like Eight Bells Rum, a molasses-based homage to a Winslow Homer painting, and the distillery-only Rack IV Saison Whiskey, a small-batch collaboration with Allagash." - Stasia Brewczynski

My wife and I were fortunate to be able to take a tour with just us and Ned, one of the owner/distillers, in the afternoon. As an amateur brewer who is very interested in distillation, he gave us an incredibly detailed tour with cool historical notes. He also answered all my questions with thorough details. The tasting directly after the tour was lovely as well. They have some unique batches that are well worth the trip. I cannot recommend a stop here enough.

I stopped the other day and had a fantastic time. Got to taste many great spirits and learn lots about them. I also met one of the owners too. Very friendly guy.

This amazing distillery makes and manufactures their very own product from hand-mixing 500 gallon steel containers of raw bourbon right down to putting the label on the bottles themselves!! Just 5 individuals making it ALL happen in one space, selling all over the globe!! Not only did we enjoy hearing about the Whiskey making process, but we got the chance to meet these fabulous entrepreneurs selling Whiskey-infused Chocolates, retrieved right from the distilling company!! My favorite was the Gunpowder Rye that combines the rye Whiskey with Sweet dark chocolate in a rich ganache center and is coated in an even darker chocolate shell! This truffle had notes of cinnamon, sassafras, and oak with a robust peppery heat that is echoed in the blend of spices that's dusted on top to give that "gunpowder" look and feel!

This place is awesome!! I don't remember our tour guide's name, but she did a great job explaining the process and answering all of our questions. I had some previous homebrewing experience, so I was curious about the differences between brewing and distilling. She took the time to go over everything. Really above and beyond. They're a smaller operation and I think it shows in the quality of their products. Everything is good, but the gin is excellent and the rye (which I don't typically like) was my favorite. I highly recommend making a stop here.

Staying in Old Port in Portland, we went out of our way to visit on the recommendations of other blogs and reviews. Did not disappoint. A small craft operation run by the most friendly and accommodating partnership. Tour was great and all spirits were good. They have a great symbiotic relationship with Allagash brewery that is a great story. We went home with the Gin. 4-5 other beer breweries with food in walking distance. Worth the trip.

We stopped in here while making the rounds of the breweries in the area, and I highly recommend it! One of the owners, Tim, was wonderful and gave us a tasting and tour of the facility. Their liquors were great, and they have some fun, distinctive distilled beer spirits that were really tasty in addition to their rum, gin, whiskey, and rye.

My partner did a tour and tasting here, and it was such a great time! Ned was as accommodating, informative, and friendly as could possibly be.
