Fantastic selection and variety of Indian spices and food goods. The prices are really good, and much better than the bigger store next door. The owners and staff are really really friendly and helpful. I was actually in the store next door debating on spices to buy, but was aggressively rudely kicked out at 7:59 p.m as they were closing at 8. So I stumbled into this shop right next door, what happened to be open until 9:00 - and boy am I glad I did! I scored authentic spices at half the price as the place next door, and walked away with fresh delicious Indian candies. The candies are what triggered me to look inside an Indian food store in the first place. What's inside I realized all the things I've been missing out on my entire life. Owner gave me a mango for free. I will definitely go out of my way to return to the store every time I visit the city again.

Don't let the small entrance fool you, the shop is large inside and has tons of items of various kinds for people who want to make Indian food or enjoy fresh Indian sweets. Prices are quite decent and better than some other stores nearby. They have tons of spices (over 50 kinds), Indian snacks, masala mixes, frozen food items including desserts like kulfi, Indian lentils and grains, paneer, yogurt, maggi, Indian herbs (mostly dried). They also have tons of Indian utensils, pressure cookers, mortar and pestle etc.

I don’t know the owner might sleeping ..:and running this business outlet.. in the middle of the manhattan..! very rude customer service there are 3/4 Bengali guys working in the store Don’t have manners to talk with customers ..All are same Over price the and more over applying taxes .. on small things 1 piece of small green pepper 🫑 $2 1 piece of Cilantro 🌿 $2 and when final pay with cash counter they add taxes too ..

New Foods of India owner and workers, I can't express the level of gratitude I have for your little shop. Not only did I get all the spices I needed to make my Buttered chickens and paleke paneer, but I also received such caring and humble service that counts for much more. I recently went to a bigger Indian market not too far from you (I will mention no name), and the workers were extremely rude. The man in the front cashier was helpful. I loved how he promoted the newly arrived mangos. They looked delicious. So sad I am allergic to it. Anyhow, I highly recommend this grocery store to everyone near and far. All the south asian condiments and food you need and more! Last thing I must mention, my fathers nurse and I also got two store made samosas and accompanied it with a jar of Mint Chutney, and we were blown away by the taste. Absolutely delicious! You will get all the spices you need, find great frozen food options, fresh vegetables, yes they HAVE paneer cheese and above all, great customer service. You have a permanent customer here, and I will send friends your way. Thank you for being authentic and kind. God bless.

The perfect place to visit! They have a wide variety of products, and everyone is very friendly. The owner is a very nice person who makes you feel welcome. My husband and I will definitely visit here again.

Felt like coming home!!!! All the uncles were so nice to us and helped us find everything we need. Also excellent samosas and one of the best spice collections I've seen.

I have been on a quest for mithai and this place looks very promising! This place is smaller compared to the Goliath Kalustyan's next door. Nonetheless, this place has quite the impressive curation of all kinds of herbs, spices, condiments, snacks, drinks, canned foods, cookware and more. They have fresh produce and of course a great selection of various mithai!!! The staff/owners were really nice and offered free mithai samples and fresh dates! It was my first time having fresh Yellow Barhi dates and I was amazed! The texture is super crunchy and crispy. Very sweet and delicious. Sampled multiple different kinds of mithai: barfi, coconut Cham Cham, milk cake, kalakand, soan papri, coconut cutlet, saffron peda, jeelabi, kaju Kati, Stuffed Gulab Jamun. Overall very sachrine (I expected that from mithai in general), kalakand and saffron peda are my favorites as they are more milky and decadent (they are made from milk as opposed to the other ones made with flour). Also got a can of Rasgulla - I've been meaning to try Ras Malai and Rasgulla and delighted to find both in giant can format!! The Rasgulla has spongy texture and very porous that's very fun to eat! The unique porous structure helps absorb all the rose flavored thick sugar syrup. It's definitely very sugary and overwhelmingly sweet, but sometimes you need that to hit the sweet spot (pun intended lol)

New Foods of India is a small store jam packed with Indian groceries both fresh and frozen. This is my go-to place when I cannot make it to Jackson Heights. Over the years, I have seen many people working here, some nice and others difficult. I like to buy fresh vegetables, uncooked phulkas, Haldiram's paneer and imported Indian mangoes in the summer months. Often a mango was cut up for me to taste before I bought it. Unlike Patel Brothers in Jackson Heights, these Imported mangoes from India were often more expensive. Since bargaining is de rigeur in India, I have bargained royally in Hindi so was able to get a few dollars knocked off. Packaged foods are questionable that It's judicious to check the expiry dates here especially for tea. When I pointed out expired teabags the attitude was lackadaisical. I have yet to see anyone buying tea here. Service here is nice and I have often called to request a delivery and it has come quickly especially this summer. When one pays in cash dollars are knocked off. Psychedelic mithai (Indian sweets) are not the same as in India as the milk is different. These taste sickly sweet and awful to me and for years I would be given one to sweeten my mouth which I quickly passed on to a friend. Thankfully this has stopped now.

New Foods is an upgrade relative to Sinha Trading Company, the erstwhile occupant of this store space next door to the venerable Kalustyan's. While its legendary neighbor is a great choice for eclectic ethnic ingredients, New Foods majors in Indian foods. They have a large selection of all things Indian--snacks, spices, vegetables--in a packed space. The shopping experience is compromised with the small space and narrow aisles, but you will most likely walk away with what you were looking for. I find the service here to be the winning feature. They help you find what you are looking for while suggesting alternatives, and the cashier always gives me a freebie sweet snack from the selection on display. This generosity doesn't seem to be linked to the ticket price of your purchases, which is irrational but endearing. My frequency of visiting New Foods is about once every couple of months, but they deserve more. Maybe I will try ordering online and picking up from the store next time, since they seem to have a fully functioning web site.

Excellent variety and pricing is helpful too. I have just moved out of the city, and am so glad they have mail service. I'm Italian and I love fresh spices! Even though they are in Midtown, they are very reasonably priced! Service is good and they always throw in an extra something!

Friendly when you walk in, then overcharge you at checkout. cashier even refused to give a receipt, when asked! No expiration date on many items such as spices. Some items were not fresh. Cashier clearly thought of this ´little old lady´ as a mark. Not a nice experience

Situated next door to South Asian giant market Kalyustan, this shop is jam packed with most things you are looking for. What I like about this store is the personalized customer service unlike what's his name next door. Don't get me wrong, I like their neighbor but they can be a bit snooty/not helpful. I was looking to buy Paneer and not only did they have a 14 ounce block in stock at $6.99, but also a light/low fat version! Jackpot for me since it was my preferred choice. This store has every kind of spice imaginable as well as teas and other necessities if you're an Indian food lover like me. I also bought a jar of homemade Mango Chutney though I was dismayed to see the addition of Red food dye 40 added to it. Dammit. It is delicious though. Since it was Diwali when I visited, they extended a sweet treat to customers as they checked out. That in itself was a sweet gesture. I'm going to visit this store more regularly. BTW, I'll be making a Paneer Jhalfrezi with the paneer and spices I bought. Great store.

I've been shopping here since the 80s. It's gone through upgrades over the years, but the store still has a neighborhood feel (unlike Kalyustan's next door, which has gone hipster). Service is very friendly and prices are reasonable. It helps to bring cash because they can offer very good cash discounts.

I'm not sure if the prices at this grocery store are comparable to other Indian grocery stores in Manhattan, but the prices on spices and other food items seemed steep to me. I was shocked that small 3 ounce packs of spices were $3-4 and other items like daal were upwards of $7 each bag. Again, I don't know if this is the standard in Manhattan, but compared to other cities, items are up-marked significantly. A lot of the items at the store are also not clearly labeled with the prices. Most of the items are just arranged on the shelves with no price tags or indications of the price range for various types of products. When I asked the store keeper how much certain items cost, he gave me the most vague answer possible saying, "Don't worry." Um that's not really a helpful answer.. The store keeper also was following me around the store the whole time and being incredibly overbearing. I'm not sure about you but I prefer to do my grocery shopping without someone trailing me the whole time and forcing conversation. I also happened to be on the phone and when I told the shopkeeper, he still would not leave me alone. I won't be coming back to this store and will keep searching for a more customer-friendly and affordable Indian grocery store.

What an all but hidden gem! I literally stumbled upon New Foods of India and am so glad I made the decision to stop in. The second I walked in I was taken back to my younger years traveling abroad and exploring wonderful stores all over the globe. The customer service is top notch; they clearly take pride in the store and care in their work. Unfortunately a few unreasonable and rude customers came in while I was shopping. But these guys handled them expertly while remaining tremendously professional. There is a good amount of variety throughout all their offerings, and the pricing fair considering the product. They have the single best gulab jamun I've ever eaten, and were even kind enough to offer me a complimentary piece of burfi after I waited a good amount of time for a customer who was being extra and then was further delayed by a slight hiccup with the register (all other register transactions I saw while shopping went quite smoothly and quickly). If the shop were just the slightest bit bigger to allow for aisles that could easily accommodate two people passing without one person backing up, this would be a 5-star review. Still, that quirk is part of their charm. I really can't recommend them enough for lovers of Indian / South Asian flavors, adventurous eaters, and for those with allergen concerns (so many rice-based gluten-free options)...heck...for any one and all!

Stopped by here late evening looking for sweets to take to an event. Service was quick (hence my 2 stars) but the sweets were terrible in taste! They tasted old and some had the flavor of mothballs or other scents. I would not go back. At $12 for a small box (pricey compared to shops in queens) I expected better. Go to the spice corner further down the street. Though prices are comparable at least the sweets taste good!

Great selection and very friendly service. Made a huge run for dal, rice, various spices and was not disappointed. Used to frequent a more famous neighbor but I like this place and will be returning.

Over the past few years, I've started making a lot of Indian recipes, and New Foods of India is a godsend, well worth the trip from the Upper West Side. They have everything I've ever needed for a recipe, including fresh methi! The staff are unfailingly helpful and friendly, and it's a real pleasure to shop there.

This family run business is next to Kaluystan's and has similar prices but definitely better service! When you walk in, there are nuts sold by the pound and a glass case Indian sweets. They have frozen, fresh and fridge items. The owner, Hakim Bai, gave my mom and I his card and was very helpful in helping my mom finding some of her favorite grocery items. Would highly recommend visiting!

I have been a customer of this wonderful place for years. The service is courteous and friendly and the products are fresh and well-priced. During the worst of the pandemic, had I wished, they would have delivered -- those years must have been very difficult for them. As others have mentioned, Kalustyans is more expensive and much less welcoming.....why not shop here where the staff think a customer is important ?

New Foods of India has an excellent selection of spices and pastes to make your own Indian food. They also have a good selection of authentic snacks and beverages. The staff is very kind and goes out of their way to help, especially if you are unfamiliar with spices!

I came year 8 years ago after a friend tried to find the spices she needed at Kalustyan's and Was Not going to pay those prices for those spices. I could spend hours in Foods of India looking around. Besides the good prices, they are stocked with every kind of spice imaginable and large glass jars above the shelves with candied fruits and other dried larger herbs. Everything is labeled clearly and packaged carefully (although some things should probably be transferred to glass jars at home after you open the packages). The store is small, calm, and quiet. Some of the more interesting spices that I found: 3 kinds of ground and whole Cardamom: green, white, black Harissa spice $4.99 "Rose mery" LOL $2.99 Dried Hibiscus Flowers Garlic Chips Kolonji (not sure what it is) Jerk Seasoning, Classic Jerk Seasoning, and a "Complete" Seasoning Will come back for: P&G tea bags $5.99 small bags of Khichari Rice mix French Lentils $4.99 Cashews $4.99 They have a little room to the left side of metal and copper kitchenwares.

Prices recently went up but the staff is still pretty nice, I think Spice Corner is a bit better for desserts. Came here for some Indian desserts, well one specifically. Prices are very reasonable here for spices, definitely so more than Kalustyan's next door. Then again, they sell a lot more stuff and the place is much bigger and is on the main level of the street. All comparisons aside: Desserts are 12.99 for a pound, of any type. Very, very nice man in front. I noticed the desserts (I came in for a South Indian treat) and they have carrot Halwa..aka Gajar (Ka) Halwa. It's my favorite Indian dessert by far, probably since the majority of them are too sweet (I'm looking at you Jalebi.) There happened to be another woman from somewhere else who wanted to take some treats on a train. The guy gladly wrapped/put the treats in a bag that would last that long. She wasn't sure what to get so I ordered first. "Half a pound of Gajar Halwa please." Well, Gajar is too fun a word not to say and why not if I know the actual term.) She had never heard of Carrot Halwa so I told her what it was and the guy gave her a piece as well. The guy gave me a small piece to sample as well, nice and not super sweet, almost not sweet at all. He also gave me a piece of some type of Burfi, I think Pistachio, with it (I guess for recommending something else to her) and it was quite good also. As I tried there and had later, the Gajar Halwa here is not super sweet. It's a bit more soft/flaky but I prefer it this way over the super sweet one with raisins found in some other places. It's probably closer to a 4.5, but the really nice guy (who lowered the price from 5.15 to 5.00) gives it a 5 instead.

Not open when it's supposed to be open waited in the rain for 20 mins. Came all the way here from broadway and 140th. Very disappointed.

I got atta flour and pigeon peas here. I also bought some yummy carrot halvah. They gave me a samosa and won me over completely!

Decent looking store with a lot of snacks past the expiration date. These guys should really be investigated for not only endangering public health but also lying about it. When confronted the moron says to me that it's the date of manufacturing not expiration... see for yourself - will loaf pics if this lets me.

Why is there no love for this place? It's right next to Kalustyan's which has long since been recognized by yuppies as the place to go for Indian spices, yet a lot cheaper. All the spice bags are labeled by hand and everything seems very homestyle. I found exactly what I needed with the help of the guy at the counter and was out within 5 minutes. Will be back here when I gotta restock!

Good place to go to for different types of spices from different countries such as India Pakistan and Bangladesh and even Middle Eastern as well and a whole variety of different types of teas and coffees they also have a large variety of cooking utilities and large variety of dried fruits and mixed nuts and fresh Desi sweets made fresh everyday I definitely would recommend this place to all my friends and fellow yelpers

I'VE FOUND IT!!! This is now my ultimate go to spot for all my unhealthy Indian snacks... Haldiram's galore. They have everything I am looking for: frozen goods like naan/parathas/roti and those yummy jalapeño and cheese samosas..lots of Indian hair care/skin care products (that smelly Amla hair oil we love to use and don't forget about Fair and Lovely!).. and the most important of them all.. they have.. Achaar! I'm a little confused why this place seems to be not as busy as the other two Indian stores down the street (Spice Corner and Kalustyans.. although Kalustyans doesn't pass for an all Indian grocery store to me). The people are super sweet.. the only thing it may lack is the minimal amount of fresh sabzi they have in the store but they make up for it by having frozen sabzi! And besides, you can buy the majority of that in any regular grocery store. I've just saved myself from taking a trip to Patel Brothers all the way in Jackson Heights. Definitely give this place a chance!!! :D

On Spice Row, there are many favorites. Right next door to Kalustyans, it's a great find for CHEAPER spices than Kalustyans. Selection - Solid (every Indian spice you would need) , but not nearly as vast as Kalustyans, but the prices are almost always 20%+ cheaper here. Service - Attentive, un-talkative but helpful. Prices - cheaper than anywhere else I've been to.

Sweet staff and good selection of items. Might not be as famous or have such a wide variety like Kaluystan's next door but prices are cheaper here. I'll stop by again in the future!

I love shopping for my Indian groceries here! The service is always nice, there's a great selection of groceries and they always offer yummy samples!

On a block where any grocery would be overshadowed by the enormity of Kalustyan's, little Foods of India probably should be the go-to place for what its name suggests. Their stock is very precise, and cheaper than their next-door neighbor. Someday I will build up enough courage to order an array of colorful desserts that are inside the case just past the door.

After getting an Indian cookbook, I needed to find a store with the necessary spices and other ingredients. Yelpers did not disappoint - this is a great little store. Its small enough to not be intimidating, but large enough to stock practically anything one might need. Spice prices are very reasonable ($2.99-$3.99 for 3oz bags) and the quality is very good. The owner was very helpful and recommended a certain brand of rice. He also gave me a free dessert snack, which proved to be a smart move since it was delicious and I bought a few more. I will definitely return the next time I need some more Indian ingredients.

Touted best indian supermarket in ny! The prices are cheap and if they don't have what you're looking for they will order it for you.

As always whenever l come here it's clean, good quality Indian products, the staff is very helpful, they also deliver and open late.

I came in here looking for henna powder. The staff we're all very gracious and I even got to try some sweet treats. They have a new customer in me. I love that they we're attentive and helped me find exactly what I needed.

Indian food shop. I guess the name gives that away. Next door to the uber famous Kalyustan's, but this one just has Indian food products. It's smaller and more helpful. In the back there is a small freezer with hard to find frozen curry leaves. I love their store label sweet mango chutney. There are shelves and shelves of spices. If you want a sweet treat, or if you have kids the Egyptian Best brand mango drink is a huge hit in my house. (I know it's not from India, but it's rather yummy.)

I definitely agree with others about the stock. Excellent selection and very reasonable prices. But when I went for the first time the other day, the staff there were EXTREMELY PUSHY. They weren't rude about it and were nice about giving me samples to try, but what started as showing me some of the things they had to offer ended with two employees literally just putting things into my basket. I didn't want to be rude to them, and maybe it's my fault for not being pushier back, but I've never felt so uncomfortable in a store. While I was checking out one of the employees went and got something I had put back and I basically had to put my foot down about not wanting to buy it. I'm not sure I will return, but if I do I will be sure to get what I need fast and avoid eye contact with the employees.

Was craving some Indian sweets and so I took a walk down the street, window shopping to see what place might have the freshest looking ones. Didn't expect it to be a supermarket but sho nuff! Really tasty! The man behind the counter even threw in a free sweet that he guessed would taste like a treat native to my part of India. The store seems really well kept and the staff are very friendly!

I found this gem of a store walking around. The owner is so kind and since I didn't know the names nor had I tried the homemade sweets behind the glass, he gave me some to try. He also took all the time to explain to me what they all meant. Everything is homemade, delicious, wholesome and most of it is gluten free. Prices are very reasonable. All in all, a magnificent experience. Their Beason (chickpea flour) tortillas are amazing too.

They have everything Indian you need. From the spices to drinks. The price is affordable. And since it is in Curry Hill, the location is great.

Kalustyan's upstairs may be more well known but New Foods of India has a wider and fresher selection of Indian spices, grains and pulses...and at better prices. The place to go for hard-to-find South Asian ingredients. The store also features a handful of house-made specialties like chutneys and Indian sweets (barfi, laddu, etc). Very cheerful and helpful service.

The best, newest, cleanest, friendliest place on the block! There products are laid out in the store really well, everything is fresh, their handmade sweets are amazing, and staff is very helpful. Also their prices are totally reasonable. If you get lucky they may actually have the super hard to get mangoes exported from India. And if you don't feel like cooking, they have a wide selection of prepared frozen foods in the back.

What a place!!!! Think of any Indian ingredient, however exotic or rare, this place probably has them. Walking in is like very few experiences in NYC. This might be even more extreme than Kalustyans or Sahadis, there is literally nothing from anywhere except India. And the prices, whoa. Absurdly cheap, especially when you consider this area. We bought some awesome copper/brass dishwater and drink ware and some chickpea powder and it was very reasonable. Plus, as you shop and enjoy all the exotic spices and ingredients, there is the kindest man behind the counter giving out fresh baked Indian sweets that are delicious!!! I cannot recommend this place with more enthusiasm. If you love all things Indian you need to visit this place, it's very special.

I was on my way next door to the "bigger, better" place. I went in to Kalustyan's and saw how much they were charging for rice and walked right back out and went to Foods of india instead. MUCH cheaper, and when I was looking for just the Triphala powder, the man ringing me said- " much better than the pill form" - which he is right about. As for the smell that is mentioned here - I have a rather acute sense of smell and it smelled just fine to me!

This was my first time really going into an Indian store, and the store owner was so nice. He gave me and my friend some sweet samples. He was so kind ,and we even exchanged a few words in Hindi. I would definitely recommend this store to any one looking for any Indian products or snacks. I will definitely be going back.

This is the place to come for spices. Their prices are better than Kalustyan's and they sell most things in very small quantities which is perfect if you are looking for something for a single recipe. Even if you are just looking for something basic like ground ginger, come here since you get 8x as much for the same price as one of the little McCormick's containers available at nearby grocery stores. I have found their dried herbs to be fresher than the usual jarred varieties as well. The shopkeepers are extremely friendly and will offer advice on cooking and life in general.
