Phoenix’s 12 Best Indian Restaurants | Eater Phoenix

"Don’t let the strip mall dissuade you from trying New India Gate. The lunch buffet is particularly expansive with several vegetarian dishes like dal makhani, mattar paneer, and vegetable korma. Meat lovers shouldn’t worry either — chicken tikka, as well as lamb dishes are available. The vibe at the restaurant is casual, with ample space and friendly service. The buffet is available seven days a week for around $10; with that price, it’s easy to make New India Gate a go-to for lunch." - McConnell Quinn

Check out New India Gate! Just outside Ahwatukee on Ray Rd. Was delish' 😋 We had the Lamb Saag, Chicken Achari, Chicken Tika, Tandoori Chicken. Samosa was on point, and their selection of Naan was yummy! Family owned and operated by a couple brothers. Check it out! 👍

Google
We entered and were greeted promptly. The dining room is clean and features cloth table clothes. Our server was attentive and we chose the buffet for lunch. The selection was good and the flavors were excellent. For those that like their food a bit more spicy, there is a bowl of chili powder at the end of the buffet line to heat things up. I really enjoyed the mango custard for dessert. The server brought us delicious garlic naan right on time and offered a refill, but we were too full to accept. Definitely a good experience!

Google
This place offers a daily lunch buffet for $15.99 that even has goat curry in it! Plus, you can always order off of the menu. But the biggest most amazing part is they have 13 different variations of naan bread cooked in the traditional tandoor oven! The staff is absolutely amazing. The owners are always there and they greet and serve you!

Google
My husband and I had been looking for a new Indian lunch buffet since India Oven went downhill. This beats it out easily. The restaurant is large and nicely lit by natural light from the big windows— India Oven always felt cramped and dark! I have gluten intolerance and milk sensitivity and was thrilled to see the dishes in the buffet clearly named and labeled as gluten free or vegan. The food tasted fresh and delicious, and staff was prompt to refill our waters. My husband and I barely said a word while eating, except to comment on how amazing it was!

Google
DO NOT COME HERE If you’re looking for bad food. Everything tastes incredible. They season perfectly. The garlic naan is the best in the valley. The Keema Matter unmatched. Holy moly. You already know the chicken tikka Masala is gluten free and golden. Panner Masala is yum yum. I have been coming here for years to get food to go. Didn’t know they started their buffet again. The family that runs this remembers you. It’s clean and cozy. Incredible service. Thanks guys!

Google
The food here was very good. The two brothers that run the place use fresh and natural ingredients in their food and you can taste the difference. They make almost everything from scratch daily. Would highly recommend the chicken tikka masala with some naan bread.

Google
My experience at New India Gate Restaurant was fantastic from start to finish! The food was incredibly delicious and served in satisfying portions. What stood out most to me was how genuinely friendly everyone there was - it made me feel really welcome and uplifted my dining experience even more! Although we missed out on their their lunch buffet, our dinner choice, especially the lamb dish, left a lasting impression on my taste buds. I'm looking forward to visiting again soon!

Google
I cannot believe I have not written a review for my favorite place on Earth. I found this gem about 3 years ago and am delighted to be a supporting a mom and pop shop. The Goat and Chicken Vindaloo are so so good, I always get two so I can have another one the next day! You will leave with a belly full of good food and bountiful conversation from the staff! I will be back tomorrow!

Yelp
Easily one of the best Indian cuisines in the Valley. Service was great, food was great. We will definitely be back to try their lunch buffet!

Yelp
It smells amazing as soon as you walk in! Food was delish, we opted for the buffet. Wasn't bad as far as pricing. We also ordered Ground beef Samosas!! Super fresh and full of flavor! Each staff member was very attentive. They checked on us every so soft. Kept our waters filled. Was even prepared for any questions about the food. They especially shared they love to answer questions. Family friendly. I will definitely be back to order from the menu to try more of the food! Thank you to the friendly staff!

Yelp
Their goat curry was totally delicious. This is the best dish I have ever had at an Indian restaurant. The restaurant is clean and the people are friendly. I highly recommend them. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work. Rajesh Gupta

Yelp
Looking for an Indian buffet!? Come here! Arrived here on a weekend. My husband and I had the buffet. Plenty of items to choose from-anything from goat curry (my favorite), tiki masala, to delicious garlic naan. My favorite was the goat curry (beware of the bones) and the garlic naan. Delicious! It's in a plaza area so no worries about parking. Staff was great! Keep our waters filled. I'd come back again.

Eve H.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite lunch buffet. I was deeply saddened when covid stopped it. I went back because I heard the buffet reopened. It is a shadow of what it was. There are few selections. The food was not as seasoned as it was. The only rice available is white rice. I will not be going back. It isn't bad. It is just meh. I will start hunting again for my new favorite. I miss the old, New India Gate.

Yelp
$30.00 for this? May 30, 2024 I placed an order of chicken tiki masala and 2 orders of naan for pick up. I arrived and the order was packed and ready, I was then presented with the bill of $25.97. I asked why so much, the online menu had different prices. I was told the prices had increased but the website never update and the online prices would not be honored. Not only is this misleading, it is the illegal practice of False Advertising. As I handed over my cash of $30.00 I was told the employee didn't have a key to the cash register and could not give change back. Essentially receiving a $4.00 tip on food already over charged. I used to love this lunch spot, but the shady, illegal, and greedy customer interactions have me marking this place off my list. Never again. The food was as tasty as ever, however, I would have enjoyed it more if not accompanied my the taste of disappointment and feeling taken advantage of.

Yelp
The cuisine and customer service were definitely top notch. I walked in and was pleasantly greeted. I was very impressed with how clean the buffet was. There was a nice assortment of dishes including vegetarian and chicken that all looked amazing. I decided to try everything and was very impressed! The flavors were excellent and surprisingly nothing was too spicy for me. My favorite dishes were the vegetarian masala and the carrots. I loved the garlic naan that is made fresh for each guest and included in the buffet. The dessert was a nice finish to my meal. I will definitely be back to New India Gate for their delicious dishes that were bursting with flavor!

Yelp
The food is outstanding. The price is more than reasonable for the amazing food you're eating. The restaurant is very nice, simply appointed yet spotless clean. The service is excellent. We will be back again and again. Barb Kyser

Yelp
Nice ambiance, table cloths, solid menu options, and the lunch buffet. Since this was our first visit, we went with the buffet. Good selection of meat and vegetarian dishes. Flavorful and not too spicy. The garlic naan and mango lassie were very nice. I will be back.

Yelp
New india Gate is my favorite Indian food place!! Their Chicken Tikka Masala was absolutely delicious and don't even get me started on the side dishes that come with it! One of the best parts is that there is a spice scale ranging from 1-5 so if your family has varying tastes it's perfect! I come from a large family so we often place our order over the phone and they have nailed it every time!!!

gnec 0.

Yelp
A bit pricy for the quality (taste) food tastes good! No option to choose rice or naan when picking a curry. Giving options helps customers as well as business to grow! They also didn't serve papad while I had to wait for the food I ordered unlike other Indian restaurants.

Yelp
Me and my daughter came here for the lunch buffet. The restaurant itself is very cute. It's well kept and clean. The buffet was delicious. Me and my daughter thoroughly enjoy it. I had a yummy chi tea. The 2 guys working there were very attentive and very friendly. We will definitely be back and recommend.

Yelp
This picture does not due justice on the taste of this amazing plate. Highly recommend this place to everyone. Food is great service is great and place is great. You must try the lunch special!!

Yelp
We went to the lunch buffet. The service really good. There weren't too many choices at all. Overall a medium experience. Not the best and not the worst Indian food.

Yelp
This place never disappoints!!! Not only is the food amazing and fresh but the staff is helpful and nice! Since our friends showed us this place last year we have been more times than I can count and showing our friends as well. Too good to gatekeep!!! We drive across town any time to eat here! Definitely some of the best Indian in AZ. Tandoori Wings are a must!

Yelp
We hadn't had Indian since moving to the valley a few years ago, and this spot popped up on an Eater list of top Indian spots. It was a great find! We dined in for lunch with our two kids, ages 5 and 8. There's plenty of booths and tables to choose from, and it wasn't too crowded at 1:00 on a Friday. The buffet looked good, but not a huge variety so we opted to order off the menu. Everything we got was great, but the family favorite was the chicken makhni. We ordered it mainly for the kids to have something without spice, but we all devoured it. We also had the lamb achari and the lamb/chicken biryani. I can be a little picky about lamb, but this was really tender and tasty. And of course we got garlic naan - and added a second order halfway through! Service was great and the kids are already asking to go back - which we definitely will!

Yelp
I had weekday lunch here with a dear friend and everything was solid and on point. When we arrived around 12:15pm, there were 2 other tables seated. There was a buffet table to the right, however, it was empty. I was pretty disappointed that they were not offering lunch buffet. When we were seated, I asked our waiter about buffet offerings and he let me know that they haven't had buffet since the pandemic. Wow! I was misled by all the photos on Yelp, so make sure you give the business a call and don't just go by photos. My buddy ordered vegetable biryani ($13.99) with a side of raita ($2.99) and I ordered the malai kofta ($14.99) with a side of pickles/achar ($1.99). I remember a time when sides like raita and pickles would just come with your dish, but I guess times have changed and we are dealing with inflation. We also ordered a garlic naan ($3.49) to share. All of our dishes were solid and tasty. Food was tasty and exactly as expected. And since it was my buddy's birthday, we decided to splurge and have dessert and the waiter suggested the mango kulfi ($6.99). It was a large portion size and wow this was so delicious! I have never had Indian style mango ice cream and really enjoyed this a lot! Overall, service was very good, food was delicious. We had some for leftovers, but don't expect huge portions here. Our lunch meal came to close to $60 with tax and tip (and a diet coke also). A bit pricey for a lunch meal, but I only do this once in awhile and besides, it was my buddy's birthday!

Yelp
Was brought here for the first time for my birthday the other day. It was good, I enjoyed what was there. They have been open for 2months now with their buffet back, said the waiter. But the buffet really lacks a luster of options. I think there were maybe only 7 trays total it was very empty. And there was almost a full house , so everything was also pretty empty. But what I did get to eat was good. I just hope for a fuller buffet for next time. I'd like to go again and have more options.

Yelp
This is the Northern style Indian restaurant so they don't have some Southern dishes like Dosa. The service is wonderful as waiters were patient and happy to go over the dishes for us. It was dark, quiet and clean inside. We ordered the Lamb Byriani but didn't like it much because the rice was soggy and not much flavorful. The Beef Achari was much better and went perfect with the Garlic Naan.
google avatar

Aimee B.

Yelp
Delicious! The best Indian food I have ever had. This is a must try family restaurant with wonderful flavors. Service is outstanding and the fresh hot food is even better if that's possible. We really enjoyed all of the selections we made. Tikka Marsala was my favorite lunch item. The sauce is so yummy. We had a mango ice cream and rice pudding that was made in house. Can't wait to try this place again! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Saturday night. Was very excited to try this place due to the numerous 4 and 5 star reviews. The service was very friendly and attentive. We always had something to drink. The place itself seemed a little dusty and the table cloth had a stain on it. The food took a while to come out and was okay. The sauces were a little watery as some people have noted in their reviews. The flavors were good, but not great. I think my favorite was the chicken korma, but it was nothing to write home about. I appreciated that all the entrees came with rice and it was relatively affordable. If you live in the area it's a decent spot, but I would not say it's worth going out of your way to try it out.

Melanie S.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience here! It was my first time having Indian food and they did not disappoint. The service was top notch and most importantly, the food was very flavorful and delicious! We will absolutely be back!

Winnston T.

Yelp
Online order too long.. 30 minutes That too long ..don't waste your time here Asked your self if they more than 10 customer at same times so how long waiting.. Too bad
google avatar

Stacy S.

Yelp
Very very good! I had the Vegetable Korma - medium, hubby had Chicken Tikka Masala - medium, vegetable samosas and garlic naan. Everything was delicious with a great level of heat for medium! We will definitely return!
google avatar

Shari B.

Yelp
Expensive, food is watery, buffet has less to choose from than other Indian restaurants. They say it's North Indian style. I wouldn't know what that is supposed to be. However I prefer the other style. This restaurant is great for those who like soupy Indian food that is closer to American flavors versus the spicy authentic flavors. This place is ok but not worth the price in my personal opinion. The service was excellent and the servers where nice and accommodating. The place was clean but kinda run down.
google avatar

Sam R.

Yelp
Came here since I happen to be in the area and i'm a sucker for some SPICY vindaloo. I had never been here and thought i'd try it. Ordered level 5 spicy vindaloo, cheese naan, tandoori fish and basmati rice. Everything was delicious and reasonably priced. Only a few points for potential improvement: Vindaloo could be spicier but I just have a high tolerance so this is subjective. Service was good in terms of being polite and courteous but it was a teensy bit slow. Cheese naan was good but didn't have a lot of cheese, it was somewhat sporadic. Last thing is that the tandoori fish was kind of under seasoned and could use more flavor. Overall still 5 stars as the meal and service as a whole were awesome. Ambiance could use a Spruce to make it more themed but not bad!

Yelp
This was our first time coming here and we had no idea what to expect. We were looking for Indian buffet, which was not an option unfortunately. After speaking with the host we decided to stay and give it a try anyway. This was the right decision because the food was absolutely amazing. We had Tandoori chicken tikka, chicken tikka masala, and a few other delicious items. The mango kulfi was the icing on the cake. Definitely recommend this place.

Sadmira B.

Yelp
I been there one time and I like the seating area . I think they should improve menu. price - not to bud - except - the food I picked - had no taste - not to my satisfaction. Good luck Sarina Starfish

Yelp
This place is AMAZING, this is the best Indian food I have ever had. The service is outstanding and the music and ambiance is just the right touch. I will be returning, they have lots of vegan and gluten free options which helps us a lot and the server is happy to let you know what does and doesn't have dairy in it. Very knowledgeable staff, I would highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Remi W.

Yelp
Okay Indian. Decent but not noteworthy. If I was in the area again I'd probably try a different Indian restaurant.

Nicole P.

Yelp
This was my third time at New India Gate, this experience and the two prior have all been wonderful. From the time you walk in you are greeted with welcoming and smiling faces and a warm environment. The lunch buffet provides a variety of food to try - vegan, vegetarian, and meat dishes are all available! Everything is delicious and I have yet to try something I didn't enjoy. Make sure to save room for dessert, the mango kulfi is to die for.
google avatar

Sally F.

Yelp
We ordered naan, chicken curry, and chicken makhani. The naan was old and the chicken in the chicken makhani was chopped up into tiny pieces that tasted like cardboard. The chicken in the chicken curry was normal so I'm not sure why the other dish was so awful.
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
This review is long overdue. New India Gate is my favorite Indian food restaurant in the Valley. The brothers who own the restaurant treat everyone like friends. Their food is excellent and they have a great selection.
google avatar

Matt ..

Yelp
Believe the hype. My wife and I have been going to New India Gate since 2020 for takeout. You won't find better authentic Indian food in the valley. We drive past about 5 other Indian spots just to get here. It's that good. The couple times I've eaten in, the service was attentive and quick. They even have a couple small TVs and will play any game that's on at the moment. Tikka Masala is my go to and it's outta this world - do yourself a favor and give these guys a try.
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
This place is my happy place. The staff kindness radiates! The food is beyond amazing, I would give my first born child. I love this place so much that one time we got something we didn't like but we ate all of it because we didn't want them to know.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Great food, excellent service. Always delicious, highly recommend. Our favorites are the chicken tikka masala, the chicken makhni, and a fried cheese naan.
google avatar

Georgina B.

Yelp
Lunch buffet is soo good! Nice selection of vegetarian and meat dishes, and the owners are friendly.

Christie D.

Yelp
I arrived at 1:30 on a Friday and had the whole restaurant to myself. Needless to say, the three waitresses took very good care of me. I had the lunch special (soup and entree for $13) which were both tasty. I thought the pud Thai entree was a little small for $13. The chicken in my pud thai was a little tough. I think they precook it in order to put out the food sooner. I'd wait an extra 2 minutes for tender chicken. I wish they served pud Thai with an entree on the side for a lunch special, but they don't. It was nicely devorated inside and clean. I'd try again.

Joe R.

Yelp
Great buffet and service at a very reasonable price! Clean with a very friendly staff.

Yelp
Large restaurant with lots of seating. Went here on a weekday for dinner and there was no wait. Started off with the vegetable samosas (5/5): those were good! Really crispy and the filling was flavorful. They gave a green sauce (don't remember what it's made of but more veggie tasting) and a tamarind sauce with it, and the tamarind sauce paired with it well. Garlic Naan (5/5): great naan. Crispy and flavorful. 4 pieces per serving and they were as long as my hand. Paneer Tikka Masala (3/5): this tikka masala didn't wow me. I've had paneer at other locations in SoCal and I think those are a bit better because the consistency of the cheese is more uniform? This paneer reminded me of tofu, which might be how paneer is supposed to be like, but I've tried a different paneer that is less airy that I prefer. Karahi Tandoori Chicken Saag (4/5) was really yummy. Spinach base curry and the chicken was really soft and not dry at all. Will probably order this again next time! Chicken Biryani (5/5): this was so good!! So many spices in this dish which blended well together. We also got the yogurt sauce for this and that elevated my every bite. Would recommend this. I would come back to try more options

Shannon H.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant for lunch after reading reviews and viewing an episode of Check, Please on PBS. Sorry to say, the restaurant and overall experience was mediocre, at best and generously. The over-priced buffet had very limited options, mostly in gravies or curries that were bland, with no flavor and were not very eye appealing. I ordered from the menu hoping a freshly prepared dish from the kitchen would be better; sadly it was not. The tandoori chicken looked the part and the portion size was generous, but again the item had no flavor and was probably cooked in a regular oven rather that a tandoori or grill. The facility looks a bit long in the tooth and is in need of some upkeep, starting with the front and the facade and the restroom had no soap or paper. I love all kinds of Indian food and was really looking forward to a great experience after reading reviews. I will keep looking.

David K.

Yelp
The lunch buffet is back! My wife and I have been coming here ever since they opened but took a hiatus after covid. We were so glad to finally come back! The waiter/owner is super friendly and helpful. He kindly showed my wife which buffet items had no tomatoes since she is allergic to them. Everything was delicious, from the tender chicken tikka masala to the aromatic saag paneer, to their best-ever vegetable samosa, you can't go wrong. We will be back more often now.

Len J.

Yelp
First time here. Had the lunch buffet. Not spicy but great flavor. Wish they had samosas as part of the buffet. The chicken tikka masala was oh so tender and delicious. Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Tasty, fresh, great wait staff. Not a huge selection on the buffet line, but the usuals, chicken Tikka, Chicken Curry, ground Lamb. Good stuff. Def be back and give it another go.

Vickie D.

Yelp
We did take out on Vegetable samosas for 17 people ... food and sauces were delicious!
google avatar

Nichole C.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants, and has been since I moved to the east valley. Food never disappoints, and the service is always great. The interior is a bit worn and dated but very clean.
google avatar

Lei G.

Yelp
Feeling the need for some spice? Stop by New India Gate to get your fix! Picked up dinner - got Goat Biryani and Chicken Curry, both were tasty. The chicken was juicy & tender, the goat was meaty & flavorful. The greeting at pickup was friendly and the order was ready to go. Definitely give them a try!

Robin S.

Yelp
.We went to the Saturday lunch buffet around 12:30pm. The buffet offerings were very minimal, and of the 7 possible entrees, 5 were virtually empty. I snagged the remaining 2 pieces of chicken tikka masala, and 2 of the 3 chicken tandoori legs. The chicken tikka should be made with tandoor chicken, but it was plain tasteless chicken, as were the chicken legs. The lamb wit peas tray was full, no surprise, it was completely tasteless( no small feat for lamb). A fresh tray of vegetable pakoras came out so we got some... bad news, old oil taste and the dough was raw in the middle. The rice pudding was edible.
google avatar

Gretchen W.

Yelp
Wonderful service, and quality delicious entrees. I love chicken tiki masala and he likes tandoori chicken. We loved this version of both. Mine was creamy and buttery with tender chicken and jasmine rice. We also ordered garlic naan bread because: bread! And it pairs well in the sauce. The tandoori chicken was tangy and savory - as were the peppers and onions served with the dish. The meat tasted like it was bbq'd all day in a smoker. Really good - highly recommend and those two dishes and sides came to about $50. It started getting full as we ate - Friday night. If you like Indian it's definitely worth the try. Might become our new go to foe Indian food!

Yelp
By far THE worst experience I have had with a restaurant. Money grabbing and dishonest. The food has also gone down in quality. There was a time I would quiet frequently order their Dal Maharani but lately the dal comes severely undercooked. My most recent experience with them was a delivery through Uber Eats experience. The restaurant lied about giving my food to two drivers through Uber Eats and then also claimed they prepared my food for the third time. I am out $60+ bucks no food and a bitter bitter experience with the employees. Order at your risk you may not get the food and the restaurant will lie and say they made your food so too bad for you. UPDATE: its unfortunate the restaurant stands by their false claims. To the manager: Uber Eats communicated that no order was picked up. If you want to further clarify you are welcome to contact me.
