"Chances are you’ve driven past an India Sweets & Spices at some point—this tiny Indian market has locations from Culver City to Northridge. But that’s not to say it’s not some mass-produced mini-chain. Each location is independently owned with its own style and character, and most sell hot food items prepared in small takeout counters at the back of the store. At the Fairfax location (just south of Little Ethiopia), it’s all about the biryani. There are several different kinds on the menu ranging from paneer to shrimp, but we like the chicken best, which arrives moist every time (no easy task for a slow-cooked dish like biryani). We prefer to order it spicy, but just know that the chefs don’t hold back on the heat. " - Brant Cox

Sept. 23, 2024 UPDATE: They no longer serve hot food! — just groceries. Devastated and shattered! 😭 — 2022 Review: Small grocery store with rice and packaged goods and snacks and cake rusks and a restaurant inside full of delicious hot food. Lunch was absolutely delightful and affordable — I’m ready to go back! The service was also excellent. Not sure if the people who helped me today are the owners but they were so sweet and made me feel as if I were a guest in their home.

Google
This place has a hot food bar with a great lunch special. The curry is great and they give you large portions. The garlic nan is to die for. A family owns the store and they are super nice.

Vikas Goel

Google
This seems like just another place in LA but they have the best fresh-made chapati and gravy. We ordered roti and paneer/daal. It was cooked with the right amount of consistency and even had coriander. Definitely a must try place!

Nayan dhir

Google
The worst food in LOS ANGELES , Neever goo there. I ordered butter chicken and 2 garlic Nans, and the Nan bread is burnt-out, and the butter chicken is nasty. Caan clearly tastes the red chili powder.... -_- When I told the owner instead of being nice, he is yelling and saying I am wrong. DON'T MAKE ANY SENSE I JUST NEED MY 21$ REFUND. At this point, I wasted my money there 😤

Google
Must Try this Hole In The Wall Joint. The chicken karahi is the Bomb! Definitely That "It" factor. The best I've had in LA and The service is impeccable.

Google
An unbelievable value for what you get here. A gargantuan vegetarian thali for $7.99 plus tax. Better than expected and very nice owners. . bathrooms decent enough to use. A well deserved 4.2

I ordered food through Uber Eats and the packaging was all broken. The package they use is of very cheap quality. The broken pieces of the plastic lids were all in my gravy so obviously I did not even taste is fearing that I might eat a piece of plastic. Also, half of my order was not delivered. Dal was delivered without rice and believe it or not idli sambar was delivered without idli 😳 I don’t know if this was the fault of the Uber driver’s fault or the restaurant. Overall, it was an extremely disappointing experience. Would not recommend this place.

Google
Very very good. Ordered the chicken tikka masala, palak paneer and garlic naan. Extremely good and got a few things from the store to make at home.

Yelp
Under new management, they don't sell hot food anymore! I used to come here a lot but now I can't

Fahad H.

Yelp
It is a grocery/restaurant like most India Sweet & Spices but this particular branch's food is 10 times better than lot of other "well known" Indian restaurants In SoCal! The family who runs it are super friendly & accommodating and their Yellow Daal (eat it with Bature which is fried puffed bread) is one of the best Lentil dish I've had in LA! Their Chicken Biryani's also really good and don't forget to ask them to make these 2 dishes Spicy if you can handle heat. You can also have options of some already cooked vegetable & meat dishes on the right side of the cashier area.

Shwetha R.

Yelp
Quick, and easy bite to eat at this place. The lady at the counter who helped with our order was very sweet. We tried the choley batturey, dahi papdi chaat and thaali. Food was just about all right, simple homey fare. But could definitely could use more spice and seasoning. I felt the taste was a tad bland for me, and for my kids and that's not typical for Indian fare that should be bursting with flavor.

Jim G.

Yelp
I really like this place; the food is delicious and the groceries are well priced. The service isn't the friendliest but they make up for it with results. I really appreciate the intimate ambiance of the place, and appreciate having it around for whenever I'm hungry in a pinch

Jasmine S.

Yelp
Very very good. Ordered the chicken tikka masala, palak paneer and garlic naan. Extremely good and got a few things from the store to make at home.

Yelp
It's amazing i love this place Food is amazing the service is great and fast i love this place I can't stop my self going back there

Taylor K.

Yelp
Really great bang for your buck here. I came here last Thursday based on reviews that people had posted saying the food was great and the portion size was huge. Well they did not disappoint and this cute shop really makes you feel like you were eating in a a household with home-cooked food. Time seems to stop when you're sitting inside here,And there is no need to be anywhere else but the moment. Can't wait till the next time I can come back here and enjoy the delicious curries and tandoori chicken.

Prototype M.

Yelp
The food here is pretty good. Prices are pretty good also. But you're rolling the dice whether or not they'll be open when you arrive. They're listed as being open until 10pm, but several times (too many) I've shown up before that time, sometimes way before that time, like this evening at 9pm, and they're shut. This gets boring. And this isn't the only place that does this in LA!! Don't trust those opening hours. They're often written wrong on here or the establishments just decide them arbitrarily on the fly every day. Call first (I guess) to avoid disappointment and hunger!

N. J.

Yelp
If you're Black, don't bother. The man who works the counter will look at you like with disdain as soon as you enter. I should have known better before even going in. They are notorious for that type of behavior. I asked for organic honey, but his attitude made me walk out and not buy anything. Especially when he was just exchanging pleasantries with a customer at the register that was of his same identity.

Kolaiah A.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE ! Reminds me of home at my local sweet and spice shop . The people who work here are extremely informative and care about the quality of foods and spices they carry . I really feel understood and right at home finding spices here . I buy countless amounts of things I do and don't need . It's organized , not super overwhelming , and smells amazing ! They have a little of everything in this store / restaurant. Everyone will leave you alone while you shop and actually help when you need help . There's no parking here but the everything is great ! 10/10 for meeeeeee until my next homemade food project ciao !

Jennelle D.

Yelp
If I could give them 20 STARS I would ! The family who owns this place is all here helping and they're hilarious! They walked around and helped me shop, I bought tea, rice, spices, lunch, fresh made naan, some biscuits #Heaven This place has EVERYTHING for being such a small place! Rice, spices, fresh made naan.. a frozen section with great Indian cuisine. I'm in LOVE It's a great little market and their food The smell is intoxicating unlike some lame Indian spots that you walk out smelling like grease and curry.. I feel like I just smell spicy and... like India I can't wait to get home and eat my food!!

AriZona T.

Yelp
Should have given them Zero Star if this is possible. Terrible customer service with no good food. Pakoras were over-fried and almost break the teeth. Naan are under cooked. Disappointed

Steve L.

Yelp
I bought an order of Chicken Tikka Massala and garlic naan. It was 11:00 on a Saturday, and I was the only one in the store. It cost me $17.00 for a small container. Perhaps I didn't know to ask for a lunch menu or lunch special, or maybe someone to be friendly and help me negotiate the extensive menu. I love Indian food, but I won't be back there. What a shame.

Avi K.

Yelp
I ordered from here several times on Uber eats. I'm just in awe at how amazingly perfect the spicing is on their dishes. I've tried the yellow Dhall, chicken pakoras, chicken Biriyani and Seekh kabob so far and they're all just perfect from a spicing perspective which is really what most Indian restaurants get wrong IMHO. I'm amazed that it's a grocery store serving up gourmet worthy dishes. I'm just looking forward to trying everything on their menu. I really hope their quality doesn't drop :).

Alex S.

Yelp
Friendly clerks that helped me find what I was looking for, since I do not understand the language on the package. They have items not sold in nearby Indian stores

Kai C.

Yelp
This place is a grocery store, bakery, sweets and restaurant combo. Nice place to get some Indian food and shopping done at the same time. There are about 6 large group tables. Free parking shared with the laundromat next door. They have a lunch special running all day which includes a few hot bar items with veg or rice on the side. It's counter service so you pay up front. Fast service - credit card is $0.50 charge. Although if you use yelp you get %5 cash back through the app feature. The staff is super friendly there to walk you through the vast menu offerings as well! The food flavors are spot on, just a mom and pop local casual authentic setting. Good if you want fast, no frills service, cheap food. I had the lamb biryani and lunch 2 choice combo.

Joshbin M.

Yelp
Horrible customer service they can't give you an answer about food I asked simple question I'm not going to order anything with them from now

Em A.

Yelp
Apparently I am not the only one who encountered the RUDE OWNER of this place. I agree with other reviewers, this guy is the worst. I ordered a large container of chicken with gravy. When I picked it up out of the delivery bag, the lid came right off and all the chicken ended up on the floor. After cleaning up a colossal mess, I realized that the lid was not the right size for the container, hence the reason why it fell off so easily. I called the restaurant to inform them and the owner started YELLING AT ME saying he has never had this complaint before and they always use the correct lids and I must have dropped the container by mistake. He offered NO APOLOGY NO REFUND no recourse to fix his mistake. I was going to go back to the restaurant to show him the lid that was the wrong size but didn't want to waste my time. There are plenty of other good Indian places. Don't patronize this rude obnoxious man who doesn't value his customers.

MK C.

Yelp
Oh so yummy, the naan bread especially was amazing. Hot and soft and just a little bit of oil to make it taste amazing! The chicken tikka masala was nice and tender and buttery, and the lamb curry had just the right amount of heat. The young man who helped me was very friendly and explain the options. I would definitely recommend this place and they also deliver. Pure yum!

Saeeda W.

Yelp
Sad to say but totally inedible food. Can see where people who dont know real Indian food would consider it great, but to the rest, this food is very pricey slop. Chicken biryani was awful with two small pieces of chicken within a mass of over-spiced rice that tasted primarily of turmeric. The rice was orange colored with a huge amount of cut-up lemons, something not normally found in a biryani. The tandoori chicken was a complete mess. Pre-cooked chicken had been thrown into some sauce and bell peppers and reheated. The namak paray were stale and hard and impossible to chew. Sorry but overall a big disappointment. Threw the food away after one bite because it was literally revolting.

Jean F.

Yelp
I ordered 6 veggie samosa I've been going her for years it's just ok what happened to the flavors spices freshness those days are gone, the food was ok wouldn't have to go back again for another year

Eleanor W.

Yelp
Great market and casual restaurant combo. Buy your supplies and then get a very very affordable lunch special! Our new favorite place in the neighborhood

Brian M.

Yelp
It's a hidden gem for sure. Great little grocery section where I pick up curry cheaper than Ralph's. The lunch specials are a ridiculous value. Only knocking down a star because I've had better Indian food overall at other places nearby, but I'd definitely be paying much more for it. The sides are hit and miss, but the plain naan is fantastic. Very nice, and helpful staff.

Andy N.

Yelp
-- the menu on the wall doesn't have prices for the lunch combos ... nor will they honor menu prices found online ... so a certain lunch combo may be up to $8.99 versus the $6.99 found on advertising in their own window ... -- the cashier will charge whatever he feels the lunch combos are worth that day, sometimes justifying the arbitrary price by saying "tax" ... tax on $6 or $7 is not $1 ... -- the cashier will not accept coupons found on reputable websites that link to their restaurant ... restaurant.com, groupon.com, etc ... had to get a refund for that ... -- the naan is good, as is the chicken tikka masala (savory, buttery flavor makes my mouth water as i type this) ... the potatoes (aloo gobi) are borderline uncooked and the sauce with garbanzo beans (chana masala) is too sweet and too oily ... the cashier told me directly that the chana masala is no good when i ordered it. in my opinion, the naan and chicken tikka masala are good enough to put up with the cashier's pricing shenanigans ... maybe someday it won't be enough ...

Jasmeet B.

Yelp
Crap food really disappointed. i ordered Dosa and idli to go, and who the hell mixes idli with sambar while packing it to go. All the food was tasteless and the sweets are also old. Tastes horrible. Never again

Matt K.

Yelp
For dinner we had the onion pakora, half tandoori chicken, saag paneer, nan and rice. All good. We ended up buying rice, tea bags and some blood cleansing elixir from the market as well. Would recommend.

V R.

Yelp
Grocery store is pretty weak, nothing there and I would believe the reviews about groceries being suspect because it is not the cleanest place. Fast food is decent for the price on the menu, except the manager (owner?) has never charged me the price on the menu for a $4.99 dish. This cost $6.71 the first time, and when I asked he said tax. I replied and said tax is 10% so that's $5.50. Then he said he charged me for chutney when all I asked him for was to give me coconut chutney instead of the red chutney. Next time I came with coworkers and it seemed like he charged unsuspecting white people a little extra. And the last time I went he charged $8.71 when I asked for extra sambhar. Unfortunately this guy doesn't understand being honest gains loyalty and would make him more money than pulling one over for a dollar or 2.

Phyllis C.

Yelp
Super casual eat inside a grocery store kind of place. The food was really good. Got the chicken tandoori lunch special which came with rice, naan, 2 veggies. Also got an order of samosa, comes with 2 and a small shahi paneer. The shahi paneer was delicious. I could eat an entire meal of that!! Friendly service from the woman behind the counter and overall great experience!

Gurpreet S.

Yelp
Woowww! Who's knew this little Indian store in pico/fairfax It's really amazing food And all new spices available here I loved it this place.........

Henry C.

Yelp
Had a bizarre incident - I've temporarily moved to this neighborhood for a few weeks and wanted to check out both the Indian grocery stores close by, this one and another one 2 blocks away, bought something from the other one and then walked into this one. Walked around for a few and left without buying anything. I was on the sidewalk outside when a man who works there (or owns) chased after me asking what I had in my hand and why I hadn't paid for it, I quickly realized why he may have misunderstood so I explained I had bought it from the store 2 blocks away and was willing to show him my Online banking account as proof. Nevertheless he snatched it from my Hands and yelled at me, once he saw the sticker with a different price from his store he gave it back and yelled at me for not alerting him as soon as I had walked into the store. Again, I understand why he may have asked the question, but snatching it from my hands is not only rude but also illegal. Please go to the neighboring store on Pico and Crescent Heights if you need Indian groceries and avoid this one.

Emelly V.

Yelp
This place was the bomb.com the kid working there was so sweet he gave myself and my boyfriend two sweet treats even though we only ordered 1.

Regina N.

Yelp
My favorite Lunch Spot in LA! The lunch special is a great price and you get so much food. Nice serving of curry, two vegetable Curry's and naan. Naan alone other locations is more than this whole meal. 10/10 recommend!

Simon E. B.

Yelp
Nicest people around. Super helpful. It's a small spot with some basic pantry foods and small selection of fresh vegetables and a few frozen items. They also have to-go food and a couple of tables to sit and enjoy. Look, it's an Indian grocery store. Get spices, tea, your jars of pickled lime and bags of rice here. Support a small business, and feel good about life. India Sweets and Spices? Fuck yea!

David B.

Yelp
New remodel so beautiful. Food still delicious and great price. Always happy workers and quick service. Also love watching the Indian music videos they have on while eating. Thank u so much!

Yu Know H.

Yelp
I love their parathas and samosas. Overall decent quality indian food and not too expensive either!

Adam S.

Yelp
A cute family owned business with excellent food and service at decent prices. Love this place. Portions are large. Best tikka masala, saag paneer, garlic or cheese naan, raita, samosa - all of it. The dessert bar is great too and there's a grocery store inside as well if you need to pickup some pickled mango.

Lunch Lady S.

Yelp
It's far from glamorous, but it holds aisles of fresh spices, dry staples and other awesome goodies for the discerning chef who has champagne taste and beer pocket. Great food that gets to the point. If you want prissy, 'poo poo' service, this isn't your venue. But you don't care about that; you care about the good stuff. The food is FAN - ****in- TASTIC. Fresh, spicy and full of flavor, served in styrofoam and ready for noshing. Service was quick, polite and had as little fanfare as possible. Portions were perfect, large enough for lunch and dinner. As someone who was quite drunk at the time, I can say it was good HOT and COLD. *wink wink* The coup de grace was the Mango Lassi. Do you know how hard it is to find a good mango lassi in this city?! Damn near impossible! Their lassi was thick, slightly sweet with a rich yogurty bite. I was so mad I downed mine so quickly that I nearly ordered two. I love this place. Must. Go. Back.

Doreen M.

Yelp
3.5 / 3.75 stars - So I was pretty hesitant to eat here based off some of the poor reviews, how prices weren't printed accurately, and under new ownership. However, I came and it was fine! I think they use slightly different recipes from India Sweet and Spices on Venice in Culver City, prob cause it's different ownership. Also the menu offerings are different too. Even though I came at dinner time, they said to look at the lunch/combo and those prices. They also said anything under $10 you needed to pay cash, but my friend paid by card without any problem. Yelp also has a 7% cash back offer. I got chicken tikka masala which was sweeter than I am used to, yellow lentils (a smidge bland), and green/black lentils which also came with rice and naan. My fave was the green lentil as it was slightly spicy. Yum! The naan was fresh. The young guy working the station/cashier was very nice and helpful. I parked in the back which has room for about 3-6 cars. My food was about $7.50 total which I thought was pretty good. Still, my fave casual Indian place is SAMOSA HOUSE EAST (and also West). They have no A/C here, about 5-6 tables, a market area, and free water, but it is warm.

Madeleine S.

Yelp
Delicious lunch. I had lamb, chickpeas and squash. Great flavors, spicy, but not too spicy. Great price. I will be back.

Nick R.

Yelp
I liked it ok before the new management. Now... The food is ok, but it's all set up in a way to trick you. I never know what in going to pay when I order something. There's two menus- one on the wall and one taped to their food display with two different prices. Guess which price you're going to pay? Trying to get lunch? You'll be charged a regular price for most items despite what it says. Just be straightforward. It's frustrating to go through this game. Have it a couple choices, for the prices that I end up being charged I'd rather go to a much tastier place that's up front and doesn't rely on tricks.

Andy D.

Yelp
Fantastic local and slightly grubby food, plus a great grocery store stocked with all the MTR boxed favorites. Amazingly flavorful chicken tikka masala with perfect saag and some insanely good bread -- crispy and buttery, oh yes -- for just $6. Really friendly folks too. Now if only they rented movies

Janny H.

Yelp
:( I ordered the chicken tikka masala, okra, and tandoori chicken, naan and roti The tandoori chicken was not cooked in an oven, didn't have the blackened crispy parts. It was more like an instant red powder that they soaked the chicken in. The flavor only penetrated the first layer and the rest of the meat was flavorless. chicken tikka masala was ok.. Creaminess was there but the chicken was dry The okra was definitely not fresh. all soggy and mushy... Naan and roti were ok. The worker was very welcoming and nice but the food quality just doesn't cut it. At all.... A tell tale sign should have been that they were selling molded cauliflower and wilted okra......... The next morning bf and I woke up to stomach pains and on the toilet for 20 mins now as I write this.

Mayra P.

Yelp
I've been coming to this store for about one year now. I love the food, the big variety of groceries and spices. I find all the teas and the vegetarian items that I need to create my new Indian recipes. Gurpreet, who is the always at the story will make you laugh! Great service! Great food!

Hitesh S.

Yelp
Ordered food online from this place through yelp. Got a fully burnt aloo parantha. I contacted eat24 and the restaurant offered only partial credit for inconvenience saying that aloo parantha "is usually a little bit burned". I sent the images to eat24 and eat24 was nice enough to give me credit to use on their platform. Aside from the burnt aloo parantha, aloo tikki was not fresh - it felt not freshly made / frozen. Wouldn't order again!

Melissa B.

Yelp
Lovely place - lots of Indian Groceries too. Great and friendly service. Super quick. Lamb as tender as could be. Good samosas!

P W.

Yelp
I love it here. I've been coming to this Place for years. The owners are sweet, and helpful. I will continue to Pateon the business for as long as they are still here.

Michelle P.

Yelp
Wow, this place is great. The guy at the counter is really friendly and helpful. I grew up eating Indian food and I'm always on the lookout for a good place to eat. So, after seeing some of the stores in this area, I have to say this is one of the best stores I've been to . They have a really large selection of products. My favorite items to eat are the samosas because they have a kick and chicken tikka masala.

Judy R.

Yelp
Best rasmalai n carrot n pistachio sweets. Also wonderful veggie food including samosa, dosa n paratha. Favorite Indian food spot n to go n catering. No decor only great food.

April P.

Yelp
I used to eat here all the time, especially if I came to do laundry at the place next door. They even sell laundry soap here. The food was always decent to very good, and I love that they have Dosas, and the mango lassi is delicious. The people who worked there/owned it were very nice and always smiling and they remembered us, so it had a nice neighborhood vibe. Well I moved so I didn't go there for a while, but recently I came it to purchase some tamarind paste. I think they must have changed ownership in that time. I didn't know where to look on the shelves so I went to the counter to ask the people who were in the back where I should look. A woman in traditional Indian dress peered at me from the back, it looked like she was glaring. I spoke and said I needed help with something, and she continued to just glare at me. I thought perhaps she didn't speak English, but was surprised that she wouldn't at least alert someone else to help me. I could hear that there was another person in the back that I couldn't see. I ended up just staring back at her, it was very uncomfortable. I really felt like maybe she hated me or something. I wondered if it was because I was wearing shorts and a tank top? I don't know. Finally a young man came out from the back and noticed me, no thanks to this woman. He helped me find what I needed and rang me up. He was very nice. As I was paying the woman continued to glare at me from the back. I told the young man that I didn't understand why she was looking at me like that, and that I had tried to talk to her. I told him that she was making me feel uncomfortable. He laughed and said "Don't mind her, she's Sikh." I don't really know anything about Sikhs, so I don't know if I offended her in some way, but I do know that I will never go back to that store, which is too bad because I had several years of good meals and memories there. One star for that last time I ever went there, but I'm adding a star because I used to like it a lot.
