Coronavirus: the Best Ottawa Restaurants for Take-Out and Delivery | Eater Montreal

"New Mee Fung is much more than a pho place — its particularly long menu spans from rice paper rolls to vermicelli bowls and lemongrass beef or chicken. Call them for pick-up orders, otherwise delivery is available via Uber Eats and Doordash." - Tim Forster

The best Vietnamese roll ups with rice paper and spring rolls. We ordered 001-spring rolls, 410-roll ups with shrimp and pork and 415-roll ups with chicken. All the ingredients are fresh, perfectly cooked with generous portions! The restaurant is not fancy but the food is worth the visit!

Google
Best vermicelli roll ups ever! I’ve been coming here for over 20 years. I order #410 vermicelli roll ups with shrimp and pork or #401 vermicelli roll ups with shrimp. Food is fresh and generous portions. Service is fast and efficient. I would highly recommend trying out if you’re in the area. (Not a beautifully decorated restaurant or overly friendly service but food is worth it!)

Google
My first time ever writing a food review and unfortunately it is a bad one. The food was okay, mediocre at best, do I expect a little more for 16 dollars? Sure, but the food wasn’t the issue. The issue is the female server. Many reviews here also mentioned her and they are not wrong, if you come during “busier” hours - I came at 6 pm. She will be RUNNING - I’m not kidding, food smashed on the table, spare no time for any interactions with customers, let alone questions, she seemed to be in a big rush that wasn’t needed to be… (it wasn’t that busy). Loud noises when she cleared the plates as well. Then once I paid for my food, she came to clear my table immediately, grabbed my can of pop that I barely drank and was gonna take home to finish, so weird, make the whole experience so uncomfortable and eerie. She is rude, not a single thank you, not a single smile. Will not come here again, I don’t recommend this place, not even for one person, let alone a bigger group.

Google
Good food but service and atmosphere could be improved. The food is good and portions are not small but there are no choices for bowl sizes unlike most pho restaurants. The pho was good and 136 satay chicken was great. The interior was quite old and service was a bit curt.

Google
One of my all time favourite Vietnamese restaurants in Ottawa. I always loved their authentic dishes. If you want to explore Vietnamese food that is different from the classic Pho, make sure to check out this spot. :)

Google
absolutely the best pho. incredibly flavourful and rich broth. have tried pho from all over the country and consistently come back here, which has become my standard for quality. food comes out very quick. deserves more recognition

Google
Was Once Our Favourite Vietnamese Restaurant Long overdue review. My wife and I have been coming here many times 30 years ago (while we were dating). Haven't come here for several years until recently. True I do agree with many posts about the unfriendliness of the evening hostess however we got used to how it is with many Asian places. Food was great but used to be much better in the old days (90's and 2000's). Décor is okay but was much livelier before. I used to order my favourite (beef-ball noodle soup) but looks like they no longer offer it. Dessert and Vietnamese ice coffee continues to be one of the best.

Google
This cafeteria style restaurant is low key and seats about 100+. Kids can make noise and run around. There are hundreds of options for Vietnamese style food. And if you don't see exactly what you want they will make whatever you ask for. We frequent this place weekly. Once we brought our vegan nieces and they were able to customize the Roll-Up with Rice Paper to replace meats($15) with tofu. All of the options in this category(#400-422) are fantastic. The Pho soups($7-$10) are also great. My kids love the shakes($4), they make them with coconut milk and fruit so they are more like a creamy slushy.

Yelp
Dull, not super tasty or flavourful I found it bland and unappealing, been here 3 times

Yelp
Tried it out for the 1st time on UberEats, paid the extra $15 to get it delivered but didn't feel like it was worth it. Ordered the Spicy Sate Rice Noodle "Soup" and every bite tasted like a mouthful of sate sauce with noodles, definitely not soupy at all. For a Vietnamese restaurant, I feel they shouldn't add a $1 charge to have the bean sprouts & lime as a side, these are usually things that come with the Vietnamese noodle dishes... The Vietnamese spring rolls were also not the typical airy fluffy ones like I expected either. Maybe my expectations are high, but I'm not too sure if I'll have the courage to try it again.

Yelp
Spacious, and peaceful spot for a yummy dinner. Lots of take out orders while we sat and ate here. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
I had lunch here today and the food was acceptable, but nothing to write home about. I arrived a little before 11:30am and I was the only customer, but shortly after, lots of people came in, so this place is popular. They do have an extensive menu. I got #322, BBQ beef and BBQ chicken on vermicelli ($10.50). I asked them to hold the bean sprouts and the fish sauce. They give you a lot of vermicelli and shredded lettuce. You get a tiny pile of pickled julienned carrots and some crushed peanuts. No cucumbers :( Both meats were rather bland in terms of flavour. They were well salted (not too salty), but just lacking any real flavour in my opinion. The chicken was breast meat and lean, but the beef had some gristly parts. Overall, it was edible and satisfactory, but I definitely did not think "wow, this is yummy" while I was eating it. Service was polite, courteous and efficient. Decor is a bit dated. The place is much bigger inside than I thought it was. It's great for groups. In fact there was a group of 7 co-workers there and they were seated at one of the many round tables. You get a complimentary pot of tea as soon as you are seated. You write down your own order on the piece of paper they give you, and the server will come and get it. When you are done, you pay at the cash register. This place is on Booth so it's south of the main Somerset drag. With so many other choices nearby, I doubt that I personally would return.

Yelp
Came here for my Dad's birthday. They have a pretty large menu except their soup menu wasn't as impressive. There is only one size for soups. I would say it's roughly the size of a medium at most other places. I was not impressed with their pho. It wasn't bad or anything...but it also wasn't amazing. The broth was rather plain. The restaurant is quite large so will fit a large group of people. The service was meh...we had to ask for water a few times before they finally remembered to bring us water. Overall, there was nothing special about this restaurant and there are definitely better places for Vietnamese food in Chinatown. I don't think I will be revisiting if I don't have to.

Yelp
Food was amazing! My opinion the best Vietnamese food in the city. Ordered several different things and each was delicious. (Green papaya salad, beef & pork vermicelli, 3 bean drink) Restaurant wasn't very clean, but staff were nice and helpful. Massive selection on menu and in general very good value. $12.50 for my main. I'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a great patio experience and such delicious food. The menu is quite unique and diverse so I recommend going to enjoy patio dining during the pandemic and you will find new items on the menu that aren't at other pho places in Chinatown. I will be sure to visit again as there is still so much I want to try on the menu after a stellar first impression. Fast and kind service, good prices, great food!

Yelp
If only I could give half stars, this experience would garner a 3 1/2 star rating. I go here occasionally after work on a sporadic / semi-regular basis (I've been here maybe 4 times in the last year or so), meeting up with a few friends before heading out to an evening Knitting Guild meeting. This restaurant is not fabulous for its décor, but it does have a lot of seating, it's a fair size and bright inside and the food and the service are good. I find they offer a reasonably extensive menu. I have to say that the spring rolls are fabulous! Although I'm not a huge fan of Pho, once in a while it really hits the spot. However, I do like to try different things on the menu and last night was no exception to this rule. After seeing a dish presented to one of my colleagues, I ordered the same thing - down to the extra spring roll. So worth it! There is a bit of salad in the bottom of the #329(?? I think?), covered with white noodles, 4 or 5 shrimp, a few slices of beef or pork, and these spring rolls on top. Very tasty! For me, the spring rolls clinched it! I should have ordered a half-dozen to take home - THAT good! So, I will be back

Yelp
4 out of 5 s because the bit of veggies that came with my order did not come as fresh as per their usual, and I only got one little tub of fish sauce (I usually get 2). If this is your 1st time trying Vietnamese cuisine (really, why?!), this is a good place to start. For example, try their fresh rice paper roll (your choice of chicken, pork, shrimp, etc. with or without peanut sauce); OR rice noodles (vermicelli) or rice with skewer BBQ beef, chicken, pork or shrimp or a combination of these. Their BBQ is well-seasoned but can still be dipped in the fish sauce that comes with it. (Don't be afraid of the fish sauce.) If you like your food spicy, ask for hot sauce (there's at least 3 to choose from). If you want to explore more, they have an extensive menu, including pho (fa) with different kinds of meats you can choose from. They are usually generous with their portions so this is a a good place for relatively cheap eats. Their staff (the aunties and uncles) are shy but friendly so don't be shy @ say hi! Enjoy!

Yelp
Best vietnamese food in Ottawa. Fresh spring rolls. Excellent barbecue pork. Lovely owner. Only glitch is daytime waitress who is consistently miserable and never smiles.

Marcelle T.

Yelp
UNE MERVEILLEUSE DÉCOUVERTE! Le menu est énorme, le service est courtois, rapide et excellent! Et la nourriture est divine! Tout est fait avec simplicité! Bon appétit!

Yelp
My family and I have been visiting this place for years. We use to go to Mee Fung on Somerset Street before they moved to Booth Street and became New Mee Fung. They took the chicken kabob dish off the menu and I'm a bit heart broken. It was my favorite dish and I loved everything about it. The juicy chicken pieces with grilled peppers and red sauce. Now I order the Meal Set which is a skewer of Chicken, beef, shrimp and comes with a spicy chicken soup. I also really like their meatballs and I think they make the best spring rolls in town. On a cold winter day I always get the beef stew which comes with rice noodles, carrots and potatoes and is very filling. They are closed on Tuesdays and busy at lunch time.

Yelp
What can I really add to this place than what has already been said. Classic pho menu, no frills get exactly what you want. The noodles and soup is the highlight of this place. Only gripe about this place is that the bean sprouts were a bit old
google avatar

Yelp
A mediocre restaurant in the sea of Vietnamese restaurants in Ottawa's Chinatown. Our party ordered a variety of rice and noodle soup dishes, and while relatively inexpensive, nothing held this restaurant in higher regard than any other in the area. The seafood noodle soup had a bland broth, and could have done with a greater quantity of protein. The pho had a very sweet broth. The rice dishes with bbq chicken and pork very actually pretty good. Others had suggested the 'build your own rice wraps,' but that is something we prepare at home for half the price so were not inclined to order. Took 3 requests to get glasses of water delivered to the table, so service was spotty. If you need something quick and inexpensive it's not a bad option, but if you're looking for a higher quality experience take a look down the street.

Yelp
One of my favourite Vietnamese restaurants in Ottawa! Don't go on a Tuesday though, they are closed! Their broth is very good. One of their specials is CURRY DUCK soup, I have never seen it anywhere else! It was very rich, thick, and satisfying, with many chunks of duck! The rice cake is also delicious; slightly crispy on the edges, perfect to dip into the sauce. Quite a spacious restaurant too, and service is pretty quick!

Yelp
Matthew, a work colleague and good friend of mine, had often spoken highly of the New Mee Fung Restaurant. Yesterday (Saturday) we decided to take a quick run out to their location for a bowl of Pho. The friendly greeting and rapid seating assignment was awesome. This, at a busy lunchtime period with the restaurant quickly filling up. A menu was handed to us as we sat down and we were provided with paper and pencil to write down what we wanted --- and the waiter was off in haste to attend to other arrivals. The menu was extensive (so much to choose from) so I walked over to the front, main reception area / cash and asked for help in choosing a spicy beef Pho -- wanting to know of the house favorite to their regulars. The manager who greeted me was attentive and thoughtful in his response. Customer-care, in my opinion, was a high priority to him. I'm very grateful for his efforts. I returned to the table where Matthew was waiting and the waiter soon dropped by to take our order. The two soups and fresh vegetables (side-dish) arrived quickly. Delicious indeed. A flavor explosion of freshness and spicing. Absolutely satisfying and more! I'm returning with my wife and daughters someday soon to try more items from their menu. Side Note: The Ox Head restaurant (Kanata, Ottawa) remains my favorite location for spicy beef Pho. The images in my reviews of their soup tell the tale.

Yelp
Have been to this place for several years now and always come back when I am in the city. I've had the Pho numerous times but the reason why I come back is for their rice roll wraps. We don't have this back in Vancouver. Would definitely recommend this place. But don't order the wraps if you're on a first date!
google avatar

Minh D.

Yelp
I'm Vietnamese and I completely agree with the previous two posters on this one, NMF was a lot better a few years ago, when it was smaller and not as popular. Perhaps also before the change in ownership, although I don't know for sure that there was one. The menu looks daunting, but really there's only a few different choices, then it's just various meat/seafood variations of the same dish (eg. rice with chicken, rice with beef, rice with chicken and beef, etc.). The sauce and everything stays the same. They do a few dishes well (shrimp wonton soup being one), but it's not what it used to be. Sadly, it's still one of the better (read few) Vietnamese restaurants in town that isn't a "Pho" place. Not really traditional Vietnamese food either.

Yelp
On the way to Montreal, we decided to stop by Ottawa and we were starving at this point and had a random pho craving. I went on Yelp and found this place. The place appeared to be owned by Chinese people as they were speaking Cantonese. The decor is slightly different than older Vietnamese places as they had table cloths with a glass cover on top. I think this was their attempt to be fancier. The size of this place was pretty big too. It was probably double the size of most pho places in the Greater Toronto area. It was 3 pm when we arrived so we just had a bowl of pho and some vegetarian spring rolls. The veggie rolls were very good and the pho was pretty decent as well. It wasn't anything out of this world, but it does the trick on an empty stomach. If you're in the area and hungry, pretty decent place to check out.

Yelp
Great pho place. Love pho on a snowy day. I always get special soup pho (#106) every time I come back to Ottawa. We tried something new today rice noodle roll (#006). 2 thumbs up for this new appetizer. 2 thumbs up for this place!

Yelp
On our to way to Westboro by bf was dying for some pho and mentioned this place so we stopped for a quick bite and boy was I happy we did! The pho broth was one of the best I've ever had. It was so flavorful! It wasn't too salty or watered down like many places I've been. The meat was tender and the veg fresh. My only complaint was the pork salad rolls, they were extremely dry and bland. The peanut sauce it came with was sweet and watered down. Really a disappointment there. Service was fine. The server took our order and that was it. I've come to expect this from pho places. I am giving it 4 stars because the delicious pho that happened to be only $7.50! Definitely one of the best in town. I will be stopping by here again and will recommend it to my friends. I'm actually hungry just thinking about going again lol
google avatar

Robyn P.

Yelp
Consistently good and reliable vietnamese with lots of more unique offerings that aren't on the menus of all of the other Pho spots within a ten minute walk. If you like spicy, get the 136 (beef or chicken) and enjoy the delicious satay goodness. Pair it with a coconut shake and you have the perfect combination of hot and cool - and a perfect meal for less than $15. Wrap and roll dishes are popular here and great fun if you're in a group or introducing a friend to vietnamese food for the first time. Large round tables are perfect for groups, and they are full to brimming on weekend afternoons.

Hak T.

Yelp
I used to be a loyal customer of Mee Fung as far back as when the original spot was on Somerset next to the now Bubblicity. The food was always great and the service the same. Recently since the change of ownership, I've found the prices have almost double and the service has gone down hill. You don't even get a thank you after paying. When it happened to first time, I was like okay, off day. Upon visit after visit of getting consistency I finally had enough. This lack of appreciation and the level of service is why I don't go back anymore.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
My cousin took me here for dinner with a few other family members. We ordered a few of your regular dishes, including Vietnamese deep fried spring rolls, shrimp rolls, Yeung Chow fried rice, and some pho. I had a great time with my family, catching up over food. It's too bad that I found the food to just be mediocre. There was nothing special about any of the dishes. They tasted good and weren't too greasy, but they weren't too flavorful, either. New Mee Fung is supposed to be pretty popular, but I've definitely had much better food elsewhere, especially on Somerset in Chinatown.
google avatar

Carly L.

Yelp
This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Ottawa! The staff are amazing and always friendly, the arrive is really fast and reliable and the dishes are always so good! I have brought many friends and family here and will continue to come. Love this place!
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Amazing! Order 136 with tofu(warning Chick stock for veggies) 635 coffee 501 spring rolls and 505 roll ups. I've been coming here for over 20 years, this restaurant should have a 5 star rating. No annoying background music, they have a tv but it is usually off. I just read some of the other reviews, the old owners are back it is up to its former glory
google avatar

Vivian L.

Yelp
After reading the reviews I was excited to try out this Vietnamese restaurant. However I was disappointed in the lack of authenticity of the food. We ordered 220 (Lemongrass chicken on Rice) and 308 ( spring rolls with BBQ pork on vermicelli). There was no lemongrass seasoning/ flavouring in the dish and the chicken was splattered with ketchup on top... really ketchup? It was the weirdest combination. As for the vermicelli, the spring rolls were chinese spring rolls, the ones you buy at the grocery store.. super unimpressed. Rather spend my money somewhere else considering the vast number of Vietnamese establishments in Ottawa.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
This place is pretty good. It's definitely our go-to spot for Vietnamese in Ottawa. Their rice paper wraps are great.
google avatar

Enid C.

Yelp
Travelling from Toronto, I was pretty excited to try this place out after reading the reviews. Like some of the other reviews, this is not authentic Vietnamese food. It's very chinese, especially when ordering the spring rolls. Service was poor and the cashier was rude when we asked the cost of one spring roll. The only good thing is that the food came out fast.
google avatar

Amika G.

Yelp
This is one of the oldest Vietnamese restaurants in Ottawa and I have very fond memories of going here years ago and loving the food. Unfortunately the secret got out and the rest of Ottawa also discovered it, driving the quality of food down considerably. There is still a huge menu with a good selection of various vermicelli's, rice paper rolls, noodle soups, bubble and jelly drinks, as well as a lot of other items at a reasonable price that you order by writing the item number down. However not all of it is good (I think the quality of food may just depend on luck and the time you visit) and the service is quite iffy (this time they lost two of our three orders and had to be reminded about the food twice). Well I guess I can always hope that people stop going raising the quality of food again....
google avatar

Celine D.

Yelp
I've found that the food here is consistently really good. The pho broth is excellent and the wrap-and-rolls are super good too. It's one of the only Vietnamese places in Ottawa that reminds me of the incredible Vietnamese food we used to eat when I was growing up there 15/20 years ago. Things don't seem quite as delicious anymore, for some reason... I'm not a huge fan of the decor, though.
google avatar

Siobhain W.

Yelp
I've been frequenting this restaurant for 13 years and it is amazing - best little treasure in Ottawa! Service is great and fast and the prices can't be beat!
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
My family and I have been impinge here for years now, at least once a week. Though the exterior and interior may be a little shabby, the food makes up for it greatly (and besides, you should never judge a book by its cover). The owners and staff are all very friendly (though not all fluently English speaking). The best part about New Me Fung is the soup. It may as we'll be the definition of comfort food. It's warm, and there's a hell of a lot of it. It's my go to place when I'm cold or sick. I would strongly recommend it to anyone with taste buds. One final warning: they do use nuts but I have never suffered any cross contamination (I have a sever allergy).

Dave S.

Yelp
Used to be our favourite. Went last night, The menu has changed and greatly reduced in options (my favorites are no longer available) and I think the ownership has changed as well (although the waitress claimed otherwise), You typically don't expect great service at the New Mee Fung (although it has ALWAYS been friendly and courteous), however the service last night was particularly bad and not particularly friendly. One appetizer came at the same time as our main courses and we had to ask for the second appetizer (the waitress claimed we already ate it). The table next to us was served well after us although they were seated before we came into the restaurant. Unfortunately we will not be going back. time to find a new favourite!
google avatar

Jess A.

Yelp
A good place for a cheap lunch. Quite a large menu, decent food and service. Some vegetarian options but many of the dressings/sauces/dips seem to have fish sauce in them. They have a large table for up to 10 people.

Tea T.

Yelp
I'm Vietnamese and I can tell you honestly that the food here is not very authentic. Both the food and service was terrible. I'd skip it and go across the street to Huong's Bistro.
google avatar

Jui S.

Yelp
Amazing food .Awesome service always polite.Very clean establishment and amazing prices.

Blake R.

Yelp
Went over there with a lady friend who is asian. She recommended the place.. It was pretty nice, Looked like old furniture with a tablecloth to make it more formal. Nothing too fancy and modern looking which is fine.. It was a large dining room and not too busy when we went.. I had the pho and some spring rolls we shared.. My asian lady friend ordered in her language which I didnt understand. lol The food came fairly fast except they brought the wrong order. No big deal mistakes happen .. I would have given this a 5 star but there was also a hair in my pho lol I didn't ask for a hair in my soup.. cliche restaurant review joke.. Otherwise it was not a bad place . Worth trying out..
google avatar

T J.

Yelp
Could the service be friendlier? Oh, yes. The service has the busy-Asian-restaurant-rushing-around vibe. By the way, I am Asian--that's not an insult but acknowledging the fact that there are different "approaches" to customer service. Some are not such cute and cheery, server-puts-a-happy-face on your check kind of places. But the rice paper wraps are great: the veg is fresh, the meat is well-seasoned and spring rolls are always good. The salad rolls are great, too. The coconut and bean shakes should tried. Good stuff. I don't know about the complaints about the pricing. Prices certainly have gone up since I first went there...over 15 years ago! A bus ticket doesn't cost a dollar anymore, either.

Ken D.

Yelp
I had the opportunity to try their Bò Hoc Gà (Spicy sate chicken with rice noodle) today and it was both wholesome, healthy, and surprisingly filling (though not really spicy as described). I will be ordering from them again in the future to try some of their other dishes :)

james b.

Yelp
One of my favourite Vietnamese restaurants. Love the vermicelli here ! Ordered the pho here and it was also very tasty!

J O.

Yelp
Get the roll ups ....healthy...tasty and fun to eat.....peanut sauce not the best though...

Sam W.

Yelp
Since Moving to Ottawa I've been in Search for a good Pho place and found it! The service is great here, staff are always really friendly. The food is consistent and the portions are big. The only downfall is parking can be a hassle.

T C.

Yelp
My buddy and I used to come here I'm the 90s when we went to Carleton. Looking at the user pictures shows nothing has changed (in a good way). I haven't been here since 2001 before Yelp even existed. Can't wait to come here again if I'm ever in town.

Kyla T.

Yelp
This was exactly what we were looking for! The ambience and food were perfectly authentic. The service was fast, quality of ingredients fresh, and the servings are very generous. We are looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu - highly recommend!

J W.

Yelp
Dependable and always good. Mango shakes are excellent. The pork hock soup with crab (usually on the weekend) is wonderful on a cold winter day.

Curtis H.

Yelp
Great service. Received our food 8 min after placing order. Ordered wrap and roll it was great and of sufficient quantity. My wife ordered wine and it was good. Desert was very different and excellent. Will return.

deborah l.

Yelp
Even though the place could look a little cleaner, the food is awesome! The pho is great. My favourite though is the beef sate noodle soup. It hits the spot. Other great items are shanghai spring rolls and vietnamese spring rolls. Price is very reasonable.
