Everywhere to Eat and Drink in the Western Catskills

"It doesn’t get more transplant than this: an entire Manhattan diner — briefly famous for being the “bizarro” diner in Seinfeld — got picked up and carried over to Liberty, a proper town among hamlets. So many New Yorkers already know the expansive menu, and familiarity goes a long way toward a great friends-with-Benedicts brunch." - Richard Morgan

Proper diner! Having lived across the world and for 4 years in the states! This is exactly what TV tells you a diner is going to be like! Except it has great service and a very friendly owner! Get involved ! Recommended

Great food, even better staff all at a great price. You truly have to experience the New Munson diner, the attention to detail and passion shown by the employees about everything made this a meal I will think about for awhile.

My dad used to go to this place all the time when it was in NYC and brought me when I'd go to work with him. They changed the inside a lot, but I could still picture it in my mind. My pops was sitting in the booth having his favorite bean soup from Frank the short order cook. My family and I had a good meal with a nice staff just like dad would have wanted. Be sure to drop in for some great food!

I feel like 3 stars is generous. The menus were so gross we had to wash our hands after touching them. The booth we were sat in had crumbs all over the seat and table. We had to ask for beverages because they just set down water and walked away. The food is restaurant prices but diner quality and barely edible. There's no excuse for an established business running like it's amateur hours. If management reads this, go watch some Kitchen Nightmares and try to learn how to properly run a business in the food service industry.

Google
This diner was awesome! Quick and attentive service. It was a packed diner as well. The food was tasty and hot! The diner had a great 50s-60s feel with the music and it was very clean. I would recommend this diner any time over Liberty Diner (do not go there, yikes, service, and food horrible)

Google
Great food, great staff, great experience. The menu has a vast selection and provides surplus servings; difficult to finish but wonderful flavors (verified by four lovely dishes). One hiccup with the soup we ordered, but it wasn't an issue. Fairly short-staffed, one table busser who also provides water, a waitress, and somebody working behind the counter/bar stools. Lovely atmosphere and the waitress was friendly and interactive. 9/10.

Google
Delicious!! We rented the owners secluded Airbnb in Parksville (absolutely recommend) and he mentioned that he owned the diner that was on Seinfeld and that was only an extra perk after we went. The staff was welcoming, friendly, and fast. We went for breakfast twice and both times we loved everything we got, very flavorful. The locals are lucky to have this place!!!

Yelp
Great service and food. Chef Niko wrap was delicious! It has chicken, mozzarella, roasted red peppers and Greek olives! Yum!

Yelp
We were a party of 10 and wanted to make sure the diner could take care of us. We called them and they said, come on over. They have a enclosed deck/patio which serves as a party room. The staff was very friendly and accommodating . After we ordered, they brought some complementary wine. Food was fresh, plenty and tasty. Great experience. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Third time eating @the New Munson Diner and as always it doesn't disappoint. Friendly family like environment with quality food. Huge menu and best diner in Livingston Manor, Roscoe, Liberty area! Also deserts are outstanding! This is my go to place when I am looking for something but not sure what to have, this restaurant has it.

Yelp
Stopped on my way to Long Island. Haven't been to Liberty in 52 years. Not too far off rt17. Clean, good service and very friendly. Great homemade potato salad.

Yelp
To say I was surprised to find this gem is an understatement. Thanks to Yelp I have uncovered my new favorite diner on my way to and from the Hudson Valley. Once inside this very cool old diner, we were warmly greeted and immediately felt at home. The menu is so extensive that if I ate here every day for a year, I think I would be able to have a different meal each day. Heck, if I lived nearby, I just might try that. At 12 pm on a Saturday, the place was lively and had a steady stream of happy diners. This is a real Greek diner with a real diner menu, including a Greek food section. To make it even more authentic, there is a case of assorted baked goods (huge cake slices, pies, parfaits and puddings). This place reminds me of my early life in NJ where Greek diners had the best food and nobody left hungry. I ordered the Greek sample platter which consisted of a fresh and feta laden Greek salad topped with fried cheese, pita, dolmas and falafel. I could only eat half since with my Yelp check-in, I got a large order of fries free! The fries were perfect...served hot and not greasy. Tasted like real potatoes. My husband got the club sandwich which he loved, and got a slice of blueberry cheesecake to go. It was delicious. We are still talking about this place and hope to become regulars.

Yelp
Great place to stop when on a journey on route 17. I saw the billboard and wanted to avoid chains. Great find! I love Greek food so had dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) and a Greek chicken lunch special. Friendly place & clean. I left a notepad with some key figures on it and when I called one of the sons tezted a picture of the data. Saved the day! I will be back for the food but the kindness was appreciated as well.

Yelp
The food here is great and the service is decent I really enjoy stopping here whenever I visit the Catskill area mostly because it's very cozy and very welcoming. Highly recommend trying their Cesar salad wrap!

Yelp
Great diner with authentic Greek and breakfast. Went here twice while my daughter was at a camp nearby.

Yelp
This diner was very good/great and we are super glad we found it! The food was great and the staff was top notch. Friendly. Helpful. Accommodating. Just great service. We had originally stopped at Liberty diner but as we were attempting to enter there was a line with people waiting to be sat and another line with many people waiting to pay. People were rolling their eyes and obviously frustrated. Another party came out as we were at door and said don't even bother - that she had been there over 2 hours and didn't get her food. The rest of the line looked at the outburst and shook head to concur. We then went down the street to New Munson diner and we're really pleased. The Greek salad was small portion for the price and didn't look like the picture. There was Feta cheese - but not a lot... not a log or huge block like in picture. The salad didn't have much lettuce and had 1 or 2 tomatoes and 1 sliced cucumber. For over $10, I would expect MUCH more. Luckily we ordered a club sandwich to split - the turkey bacon. It was really good and huge plus lots of fries on the side. Good portion and great taste and then the star of the show was the French toast with fresh fruit. The plate came out and I wish I had taken a picture. Bananas blueberries strawberry's were plentiful and covering beautifully cooked and large French toast pieces. It tasted as good as it looked and Syrup was tasty, too. Coffee was very good, food was good (besides the portion of salad), and the staff was stellar! Host was friendly on way in and out and showed a genuine care/interest in our satisfaction! Easily 5 stars and would recommend and return!

Yelp
Great food! Classic diner vibes. A good variety of options. Plenty of vegetarian choices!

Yelp
The diner has a nice decor with the tile floor. I had a cold brisket sandwich as a main course, and a hot fudge sundae for dessert.

Yelp
This is a great little diner with fun decor, good service, and simple food at great prices. We go every couple of weeks for lunch. I usually get the burger or a caesar wrap with fries and have never had any complaints. The quality is consistent. The service is always friendly and fast, and we get a kick out of the Seinfeld decor. Only reason I went with 4 stars instead of 5 is that every time we're in there the owner is yelling at the servers. It's not easy to keep things running smoothly in a busy diner, but the servers do a great job and it's a bummer to see that they're treated like that!

Neal K.

Yelp
Really good local diner that we randomly chose to meet family off Route 17. Great local atmosphere, excellent and attentive service, and tasty food at fair prices. You'll love it!

Eileen P.

Yelp
Classic old school diner. Friendly, efficient service and good food. Close to 17 so easy stop. As other reviews mentioned, good potato salad!

Catherine P.

Yelp
Not very good. Ordered corned beef hash and it was from a can! I asked to have bacon and eggs instead and they scraped my eggs off my corned beef. Not a good meal at all.

Yelp
We went to this diner for breakfast/brunch after the Chris Stapleton concert, and we agreed with the other great reviews. The food was excellent, the service was friendly and fast, and we had our own private area for the 11 of us our on the porch. They also adjusted the air-conditioning to cool the room down for us. I would absolutely go there again in a heartbeat. The blueberry and banana pancakes were amazing, as well as the eggs Benedict. But the staff was very friendly, so much that we gave a bigger tip.

Yelp
As someone who spent a lot of time on the west side of Manhattan in the 80s and 90s I was absolutely shocked to see this diner when I was in upstate New York. I remember passing this place on 11th avenue many a late night and seeing all the craziness that was going on around and in it. From the moment I walked in until the moment I walked out I felt like I was incredibly welcomed. I ended up having a little bit of a conversation with what I assume was the owner's son and he was a really nice guy. I was there to get some burgers for my mom and I is staying in the nearby nursing home and has been absolutely miserable with the food there. She was over the moon about the cheeseburger I got her it was quite good. I had the hamburger deluxe and that was also very good. There's nothing nicer than a family-owned business that actually knows what they're doing and cares about the people walking through their door and this place is that for sure. I tried other diners in the area and I didn't feel nearly as welcome and certainly didn't enjoy the food as much. The long and short of it is I would strongly recommend this diner over any other diner in the surrounding area because the food is good and the people who run the place are very friendly and welcoming. It also helps that they're 2A friendly and have a sign in the window indicating that legitimate concealed carriers are more than welcome. Keep up the good work.

Yelp
Great food Very hospitable Best breakfast burrito ever owner is a delight Definitely stop there

Yelp
My soup was cold, the waitress ordered the wrong food for my husband, and I had to go get our check because the waitress was too busy talking with the owner. When asked what I want, I said the bill and owner asked why I don't have it, I said because they were too busy talking. The food was OK. Picked them because of great reviews but not sure I will go back.

Yelp
While the food was good and typical diner fare... holy hell the wait man! This diner is tucked a bit away from 17 and it is one of the smaller scale diners, not the turbo, 3-room variety. In thinking that, we figured two iced coffees and two orders of eggs would prob be a win-winas. Coffee came out but then we sat and waited for at least 30 mins for eggs. EGGS. Yes, it was a full house for the most part but there are only tables that fit 5 max and like I said, it's small beans in there so what the hell took so long?! In trying to get the check to bounce outta there, that took another 15 mins and two reminders to the waiter. I don't blame him though bc I realized he was flustered due to misplacing our paper, handwritten check. It was $28 and I gave him a ten-spot tip just for being there. Next time I would unfortch skip this diner and try out another spot.

Natalie L.

Yelp
The food was quite delicious here, and the service was amazing. It had a great family feel and everyone gave us the background and story of the diner, which was awesome. A great spot in the area and we enjoyed it as out of towners!
google avatar

Colette H.

Yelp
I loved it here! This is a great spot to have breakfast (or food in general), if you're in the area. Their breakfast food was hot and fresh! Their employees were super friendly and cordial. I would definitely come back here again if I was in the area.

Yelp
We'll try out the new Munson diner more like a little hole in the wall type of spot not trendy or flashy but nice. The staff was excellent and attentive to our needs . Inside the restaurant was very small and tightly packed in table space is very limited. We all had the fresh made burgers they were supposed to Be there own beef mix , good but not better then my favorite diner in New Jersey broad st dinner in Keyport nj . My sister in law had the fish and chips . Which she said they were good . The best part of this spot was the staff was excellent and the prices were very reasonable. This diner was in movies and tv shows such as KOJACK . There a plaque on the wall that tells the whole story, pretty cool place for average for food a diner
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
This is a sole diner food rating. New Munson Diner does diner food very well. You can tell the ingredients are very fresh and there is love in the dishes. It's obviously a family run business which is amazing. Keep it up Munson, only wish I was closer

Michael H.

Yelp
Get a platter with half gyro and half souvlaki - definitely get extra Tzatziki sauce. (Possibly the best in the area). Get dessert to go, you will regret not splurging. Great service, nice people, a happy place.

Yelp
Cristo crap had massive diarrhea and upset stomach from crap cheese used in cake Nice guy imposter by using cheap crap ingenious ingredients Looks are deceiving If constipated the munsen diner is the place to go

Bob S.

Yelp
Give me Liberty and give me the New Munson Diner. I don't know what the "Old Munson Diner "was like, but this updated historic blue diner is worth a trip to Catskills. A genuine greeting of welcome was afforded to each guest by the friendly and helpful owner/cashier as we were seated near the front of the restaurant on a very busy labor day weekend. Service was prompt and cordial with tasty and plentiful food reasonably priced. Most guests were smiling upon leaving and commented on how nice the food was, as we again observed from our advantage point. If you are headed in that direction, it is worth getting off of Rt 17 or is it now 86 on that stretch of the highway?

Yelp
The New Munson Diner is a reboot, under new owners (a couple of years ago?) and it looks like they nailed it! I love diners, but many are mediocre, using pre-made items and relying on the freezer and cans. New Munson makes it from scratch and makes food quality their priority. I am reluctant to order French toast because so often, it's not well made and served with "table syrup," which is maybe ok if you eat tables, but has never been near a maple tree. New Munson's french toast was fluffy and fresh. Thick slices, made from brioche bread that they make in house. Very good, but if I may quibble, I would have liked it cooked more, to give a crisp edge. I gladly paid the $2 charge for real maple, which came in a generous pitcher, warmed in a hot water bath. Corned beef hash (another item I order with some reluctance because few get it right) was delicious with a perfectly cooked, over-medium egg. Good hash browns, deeply browned. The diner itself was shipped to Liberty from New York. It was used for a few Seinfeld episodes, which they won't let you forget, as there are posters and photos from the who all over. Once you get past the Seinfeld lore, it's a classic diner with fabulous food and fast, friendly service. Clean, modem, bright, and fun. Oh, and there is outdoor seating, which looks like it would be great when weather allows.

Yelp
Great food and service! But I hate the location of it, I highly recommend this for a quick good breakfast
google avatar

Annmarie L.

Yelp
The friendly place in town. It's a typical diner, but it was the people that made the difference. The menu was your typical diner menu which included everything from breakfast to dinner. My husband ordered the gyro platter and it got a chicken panini. The staff was friendly and you could tell that a lot of locals came here. Our bill came to $30 for 2 complete meals. If your in Liberty you should check this place out.
google avatar

Yelp
The Munson Diner is legendary for its great food, coffee and more, but it has a television history as it was used in episodes of Seinfeld and Kojak. The diner sat for decades in New York City, but it's now in Liberty, New York. George Vreeland Hill

Yelp
Food was good and service was excellent. I had london broil, cooked perfectly and mushroom gravy was delicious. We would go back!

Yelp
Food is always served hot and tasty. Prices are good. Service is excellent, always friendly with lots of smiles. They all welcome you as family. Must try.

Yelp
The picture above was served at the Munson Diner this is Cheese Ravioli Alfredo and it came exactly how shown above. I ordered two orders of this meal and one had more than the other. This meal came with the salad and bread but the meal was tasteless. Yes, I know it was only $13 dollars but It sucks when your hungry and the food you order is nasty. I hope the Chef know this reflects on him and the restaurant. Just don't go there if you want your food to taste good. Side note, make sure you check your food before you leave the diner.
google avatar

Laurel C.

Yelp
Wonderful breakfast spot. Our food was delicious (eggs benedict & cinnamon french toast) and the staff were excellent. Inside was so clean, and there were several vases of flowers inside to really brighten the space. There is both inside and outdoor seating available and masks required.

Yelp
Wow, this is some of the best customer service ever. Everyone who works here is so kind and welcoming. They are constantly checking on you and it's run so well. Feels like family. Food is good! Menu is massive and everything was tasty. Will Definitey be back when traveling through.

Yelp
Great service. Everyone is extremely friendly. Food is absolutely mouth watering. Yum I definitely recommend eating here if you never have before. You can thank me later. Enjoy!!!!

Yelp
SUPER excited to find out that this is the Bizarro diner from Seinfeld - make sure to look up the story of how it was moved from Manhattan. Bonkers. We weren't aware of its history when we stopped for a quick dinner while on a road trip. The food itself was not impressive, with the exception of the absolutely perfect pita presented as an appetizer. I wish I'd ordered more of it. My tuna melt was just okay - the cheese was a bit odd (see photo). Service was okay, but paying the check was unnecessarily confusing and I'm pretty sure they added a tip to the charge even though I told them we'd left cash on the table. It was very crowded and the tables are close together, so I felt a bit uneasy and wished we'd been able to eat outside.

Yelp
After reading recent reviews posted, we decided to give The New Munson Diner a try for late breakfast and early lunch. The parking lot is large and accommodating, the landscaping is freshly maintained. We entered and were greeted warmly by the host. Then served by a friendly waitress. Iced water was brought to the freshly cleaner table almost immediately by an older man/busboy. I ordered an omelet and French fries with a toasted English muffin. I was brought a tomato and feta cheese well done omelet not overly filled with too much of either ingredient. The fries were good, could have been a bit hotter. The toasted English muffin was large, pre buttered and came with 1 each packet of strawberry and grape jam. The cheese burger was cooked to order a perfect medium with American cheese and the slice of tomato with crisp iceberg lettuce all served on a fresh brioche bun. We will have to come back to dine again and be hungry enough for dessert because those looked pretty tempting

Mr. K.

Yelp
Here is an update to my review of the new Munson diner . In my previous review I had mentioned that the new Munson diner was the best diner in liberty I was wrong it is the best diner in Sullivan County! They are always friendly when you walk in and the food is always great and you can't say that about too many other diners in the area I won't mention names but there's some in Liberty and Monticello that are not very good I've been on a pancake kick lately and the hungry man special is excellent and a good value!

Yelp
This is the real deal. What a great big menu. Wonderful food and efficient service. We had the gyro plate and the half turkey sandwich and soup. Both were excellent. The desserts looked amazing! The atmosphere is truly an old diner, very clean and classic.

Yelp
I love the backstory to this diner -- that it moved from Manhattan back in 2005 completely as is -- which is why we stopped here for lunch one day. The French toast was deliciously eggy and the hashbrowns were nice and crisp. The coffee was always hot and the refills were plenty. The only blip was that I asked for something to come on the side and that didn't happen but it's a small complaint. The staff was very friendly and I would go back in a heartbeat.
google avatar

Kate N.

Yelp
The old diner was okay so we honestly didn't expect too much when the new owners took over but what a surprise. The food is soo good and the owners are extremely friendly. I would highly recommend this new version of the diner!
