12 Spots for Fresh Seafood Boils in Chicago, 2018 Edition | Eater Chicago

"The Big Easy comes to Uptown by way of this Argyle Street spot. Its basic menu boasts little aside from seafood and the usual add-ins (corn, potatoes, sausage), but the lineup includes seasonal specialties like Dungeness and blue crabs. Patrons should order a side of white rice to soak up all the extra juices and bring their own booze for a good time." - Jeffy Mai

I've been starring this place down for about 2 weeks. Everytime I think about stopping there's no where to park. I strategically had to plan my visit today lol. I got there 1230 it was a steady busy but not packed on a Sunday. I know I beat the crowd. You go in pick the seafood you want from the freezer let them know, pay and they cook it. Or you can take to cook later. It's not drowned in sauce but seasoned well. You can add more once it's cooked. They gave me butter sauce and cocktail sauce that was good. The customer service is A1. I was in and out 15 minutes but it was early. Check out these pics. We ate like fat rats🤣

The Best Seafood to go place hands down. A bit high in price but they never disappoint me. I love how you can pick out your seafood and they weigh it. It’s a market so you don’t have to have everything cooked. Sometimes I take raw fish home to cook later. When the food is done, you can add more seasoning to you liking. I’m surprise they don’t know me by name by now. Lol

Everything was seasoned so well and had a lot of flavor that I really didn't need to dip anything in the butter. That says a lot! $23 per pound was a shock to me since I hadn't bought any in a LONG TIME but it was fresh and clean, and the claws were pretty big...2 claws with a side of broccoli and corn cost me about $70.

It's pricey to me because I'm from the Gulf Coast, but I guess it's cheap for Georgia. It's very tasty and the best part about getting the crabs is you get to pick the crabs you want yourself. I love this place.

Great seafood, good prices! You have the option of buying it cooked or uncooked. I bought one of the combos, it came with boiled red potatoes, broccoli and corn on the cob. It was delicious.

Let’s just pretend the place is in a pristine condition, clean, and has a fresh smell right! But unfortunately it is not but their services and the food compensate for that. This is seafood at its finest. It takes about 15 minutes to get your food cooked and ready. When it is all done, you get to taste a delicious meal and steamed vegetables.

We paid for sausage and didn’t get it. We tried to call to inform them about it and the number was not reachable. I’m guessing they disable the line after hours. We drove back up there and they all sped off out of the parking lot as we were turning in. This is very disappointing. Especially since we are from out of state passing through.

Came here one random day when I had a craving for crawfish. I ordered 3lbs spicy, extra juicy. These were great...only deducting a star because I get grossed out when I find eggs in my crawfish and 2-3 of them had it. Not the establishments fault, just a me thing I guess. Will be back regularly for crab legs and more crawfish

Yelp
Pro tip: they don't pick up the phone so don't bother calling. This is the second year my friends and I have ordered crawfish from them to celebrate the SuperBowl. If you want them really spicy, they'll take you there. Crawfish were huge for this early in the season. I won't question it. Took about 20 minutes to cook 20 lbs of crawfish plus all of the corn, potatoes, sausage, broccoli and turkey necks. Great flavor. I could notttt stop eating the turkey necks. Freaking fire. Workers are super cool and helpful. Prices are reasonable for the area. You must have your food ticket to claim your food. No workarounds. Will be back.

Yelp
First of all the location is in a sketchy area, but the couple of times I went the food was good. However, when I went to grab food yesterday something in my spirit told me not to order. The cook or whoever he was came from the back with a tissue on his nose holding his nose. Like he was about to take my order so gross then I noticed it was blood. The fish looked gross in the cooler not fresh at all. They lost a customer I was just so disgusted and will never comeback. Wonder what their health score is?

Yelp
I'm a Louisiana girl born and raised, so this may seem like a harsh review. I've been in Georgia going on a month now and I was missing home, so I decided to look up crawfish on yelp and I found this spot. This place is a walk in spot and looks like a typical seafood market in the local grocery store. I walked up to the counter and ordered: 2 lbs of crawfish($6.99 lb), 2 lbs of shrimp ($9.99 lb), a boudin link ($3.99), and some potatoes. As soon as i ordered boudin, I got worried because she stated, "do you want your boudin sausage boiled with your crawfish?" The look on my face must have been pure terror because she smiled at me. Let me take a moment to explain boudin to y'all. Boudin is not a sausage and in my twenty seven years of living in Louisiana and going to lots of crawfish boils, I've NEVER seen anyone put boudin in the boiling pot with crawfish. Number two, boudin is a mixture of rice and usually pork with onions and bell pepper, no one eats the casing unless it's fried or grilled. Don't let these people put your boudin in crawfish boil! The crawfish were seasoned well, were a nice size, but very dry and had a weird after taste. The shrimp were a waste of money and tasted like nothing, save your money. Now this is the real reason for my one star review, the number 1 rule of a boil is, you better wash the hell out of everything before you try to put it in a pot. If I taste or feel dirt in my mouth, I'm done! I bit into a potato and thought about calling these people up and explaining to them the practice of washing everything. All in all this was a flop for me and nothing close to how we do it in Louisiana. Don't let this place fool you into thinking you really ate some real stuff. Take you a trip to Louisiana !

Mason B.

Yelp
I was looking to get my fix for seafood when I stumbled upon this place on yelp. Reviews were good and it seemed to be a reasonably priced spot. Being from Louisiana I do have an expectation when it comes to seafood but I also understand that depending on where you are dinning things can and will be cooked differently. The cashier was super friendly, efficient, and had me in and out in no time. I ordered 10 pounds of crawfish and was pretty excited about getting home to dig in. I get home and began to eat just to find that 1 in every 5 crawfish I ate had eggs in their belly. This is something that I have never experienced in the 20 plus years of eating crawfish so it took me off guard. Besides the eggs that I found, there were a number of crawfish that you could tell were dead prior to boiling. You could also tell that they had been cooked earlier in the day and reboiled upon ordering them which resulted in them being severely over cooked, under seasoned, and out right distasteful. I'm very surprised that this place was as busy as it was considering the quality of food I experienced. I will, unfortunately, not be returning after this experience.

Yelp
Had a taste for a crab boil, and this place came up as one of the best. And they came through! The place isn't fancy by any means. Sort of like a cafeteria, wide open with a few large picnic tables. Just be prepared to not judge based on looks lol. I ordered the steamed crab leg combo + an extra claw to go. It came with a whole sausage, 5 shrimp, corn on the cob, red potatoes, and broccoli. I got it spicy - and folks, please know that it was SPICY. But so flavorful. It had probably the best seasoned crab legs I've had in a long while. The broccoli was a star too. I definitely wish there were more, even though there was quite a bit in the first place. And I don't even like corn but I definitely ate the entire thing lol. The only thing I didn't care for was the sausage. It was odd. It was soft in the casing, so instead of being able to cut it, it just squeezed out. Gross. Minus a couple cool points for the sausage, I'd give two thumbs up for the entire meal. I'll definitely be back very soon.

Yelp
I had no clue what to think about this place before arriving. I came to the spot with a friend of mine. I said I wanted seafood for this is where we ended up. The only thing he told me was that we wouldn't eat it there, they'd steam it and then we'd take it back to the house. We pulled up and he first thing I noticed was the "We accept EBT" sign. My thought was cool, I guess they have a little market inside to buy groceries. Clearly, I'm ignorant to this matter because there were no groceries. EBT can be used for your food order. If you use this as your payment method, they charge you a $1 "food fee", which needs to be paid in cash, credit or debit. Never heard of this before so excuse my ignorance. There are couple of tables in the place but it doesn't seem like you can dine in. More for you to sit and wait on your order. I didn't read other reviews so I'm not sure if you can call in and order. I wanted crab legs and he wanted crawfish. For the crawfish, you let them know how much you want and they weigh them. You take a tray and pick out your own crab legs and weigh them. Then you have the option to get them steamed and seasoned. We opted for spicy, which was great!! I'm don't eat crawfish so I can't speak on them. But the crab legs!! It came with a couple of pieces of corn on the cobb and broccoli. It had a very good tasting spice to it and the melted butter was kind of sweet. Almost reminded me of churned butter and paired perfectly with it. I bill came out to just under 50 bucks. Well worth it!!

Yelp
Ordered boudin sausage. I can tell they boil them. You don't boil those things, but I could tell they expected me to eat it right away because they placed a fork and knife with napkins in my bag. Went home and placed them in the oven. Kind of heavy on the onions. I've had better. It's a seafood place so I shouldn't have expected anything grand. I give them the 2 for friendliness. The lowest score is a 1 and that is equivalent to 0.

Yelp
I went to this place a bit reluctantly; being from Maryland I've been a bit squeamish about buying seafood in Atlanta. With that said, I ordered the 2pcs fish (whiting) and 8 large shrimp combo. It's quite obvious that the shrimp they pulled from the seafood cabinet is not the actual shrimp they used in my order. The ones from the cabinet were fresh, sizable and clean looking; the shrimp in my order were dry, old, and stale tasting. Therefore, they're obviously doing a switcheroo with the food in the kitchen. This is a shameful, unethical and to a large degree flat out fraud. People pay good money to solicit this place and this is how you treat customers? It has no place in this community. Lastly, the order is served with corn, potato and broccoli. I asked for the corn and double broccoli, however I only received the broccoli. Mistakes happen, so no huge issue there; and the broccoli was really good. But when it comes to the shrimp; I could never trust spending my money in a place like this; my first and last time visiting. Buyer Beware.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. Growing up in Conyers, GA, i had no knowledge whatsoever of these "EBT Seafood" spots, as my husband & i call them. He grew up in Decatur, however, & was more than familiar with this place. He brought me here on our way home one night & BOY am i glad he did. Let's start with the restaurant. It's a true hole in the wall, with only one little table in the corner. It's a seafood MARKET first & foremost tho, so you're not really "supposed" to eat in. I haven't personally taken any food home to cook myself (i'm not ready for the daunting task of making seafood correctly, don't judge me). But that's the main point of the market. The cooking it for you part is really more of an added bonus. Because my husband is a bottomless pit (despite being a stick in stature ), we ordered 3 lbs of regular shrimp (you can also opt for jumbo shrimp), along with two orders each of potatoes, broccoli, & corn on the cob. The shrimp was about $10 a pound, plus a dollar for peeling, a dollar for de-veining, & cooking is free! Sides were less that $1 a serving, & it was enough to fill us both! The service was quick & friendly, although here's a tip: the more you spend, the faster your order comes out. We came in & a bunch of people were in line, so we heard a few of their orders. Somehow (& i'm not complaining cause we order at least $30 worth of food every time we go), we received our order before individual meals, before a single pound of shrimp... it's definitely not FC,FS. So if you wanna be in & out asap maybe order more than $30 of food lol. We come here ALL the time, & it's definitely my favorite EBT Seafood joint in Decatur. I'll keep coming until i can't eat another shrimp. This ain't a sponsored review btw... felt like i had to say that lol.

Yelp
I always eat here but tonight I was very disappointed in the cook everything was cold and not seasoned for the 50 dollars I spent here
google avatar

Calender L.

Yelp
Highly pissed... it was 820pm Flat shoals New Orleans Seafood was closed so we decided to try the Covington Hwy... HUGE MISTAKE. Potatoes undercooked, shrimp was dirty $13 in shrimp trash and over $50 in overcooked crab. It was my friends birthday and it was a total disaster. You have one star because I had to, just to rate you all, you deserve 0 stars and should be closed indefinitely. If I didn't mind waiting for a new card, I'd do a charge back. We threw the whole dinner away! Never again!

Yelp
Love this place. It's not the place to sit down and eat to enjoy. Def order to go!!! The crabs, broccoli, nada sausage and turkey necks are so good. It's amazing! I just spent 300.00 for my out of town guests that love this place. Highly recommend!! Enjoy your crabs!!
google avatar

Ms.Tiff C.

Yelp
Being it was my first time the food was pretty good. well seasoned I had more than enough to share. they're a little pricey but that can be expected with seafood!! The turkey necks were nice and tender and well seasoned as well. 1 Outta 10 I Give this place a 7 only because the crab legs had that frozen freezer taste other than that they were good!!

Tamela P.

Yelp
I was very impressed with how good the food was. I ordered the crab legs in which you can pick your own cluster from the freezer. They prepare the food Fresh and can add additional seasonings to the meal. It was well seasoned with old bay and with lots of seasoned butter. I will be back! This will be my new favorite seafood spot!

Anna A.

Yelp
I LOVE this place!! They are nice and accommodating, the seafood is always cooked perfectly and seasoned. The sauces and the spices that you can use is wonderful! The flavors are really good! I go here at least 2-3 times a week! By far the best seafood! I visited Southern seafood because this place was closed, and i will never go there again!
google avatar

Mercedes P.

Yelp
Simply isn't New Orleans style seafood at all. Only had regular butter no garlic butter. Food was very dry. They do give you the option to add various seasonings to your own food at the front which is really great. But there is nothing special about this place. The portion is good for the price but it definitely is not worth a return trip.

Ronnielynn Y.

Yelp
This seafood spot has been my favorite place for crawfish and steamed shrimp for years.. I never spend less Than $50 here, but today I opted to try their fried seafood and I regret that decision. I was extremely surprised in the lack of flavor in the coating. I ordered fried scallops and fried whiting....all I can say is TASTELESS. They offered a choice of cocktail or tartar sauce but because of how flavorful I knew the steamed food was here I didn't want any. But it was definitely needed. This experience make me question coming back even for the steamed food. The scallops were even sitting in a mystery liquid.. If you decide to stop by stick with steamed foods here.

Rhonda R.

Yelp
So the last time I went I got a combo with what were suppose to be jumbo shrimp. Okay so this time I went, I picked the Jumbo shrimp from the case because the ones I got before were over cooked and not jumbo. So I watched And these people think they are slick. They take my tray to the back and then someone comes out goes to the cooler on the back wall to get smaller shrimp to make my order. Wont be back.
google avatar

Kris J.

Yelp
Ok.. so for a seafood place I have some issues.. I got the fried shrimp plate and I was slightly disappointed. For the price, which was a little pricey, the shrimp were overlooked and rubbery. The sides (fries) were just fries.. nothing really special. The wait was Linda long too, so I suggest calling ahead. The biggest problem was before I got into the store. Holy freaky funk!! The smell outside was almost enough to turn me away.. its HORRIBLE!! I have no idea what they are dumping outside in their trash, but it was ridiculous and turned my stomach.
google avatar

Samirah J.

Yelp
I have been going to this place for 5 years food was good but now the good has gone down hill. They must have changed owners. Last 2 times I went, the food didn't have any seasoning. Tasted dry.last night I order f1 plates with catfish, they gave me the wrong fish. Steam shrimp was so dry, no tasteto it at all. Look like they gave us 10 fires on the plate. I will not be going back there any more.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
They are GREAT at seasoning the seafood! I avoid some seafood places when I am very hungry because I don't want to eat all of my food and still be hungry. This is NOT one of those places. They give you your money's worth when it comes to portions.
google avatar

Timothy J.

Yelp
This establishment is exactly like A LOT of similar seafood distributors that are popping up all over "the hood" that sell fresh seafood that you can buy raw with your EBT card, and take home. Or they can charge you and extra fee to cook whatever they sell either by frying it, or steaming it. I'm pretty sure that these type of places are exploiting some sort of loophole when it comes to accepting EBT...it just seems...FISHY. See what I did there?? Anyway, settle down, settle down...the food is good when you are in the mood for seafood! They have IT ALL!! Various Fish, shrimp, crab legs, scallops, lobsters, craw fish, squid and they also have Boudin sausages, and Turkey necks. The side items are normally broccoli, potatoes and corn with their combo platters. Or French fries with the Po boys, which looked very good btw. I had the combo #7 which is $12.99 and comes with 2 pieces of your choice of fish (catfish, whiting, tilapia, or perch), 5 shrimp, scallops, broccoli, 2 potato halves, and an ear of corn. I was BARELY able to eat it all!! And I GETS DOWN!! The wait for them to prepare the food was reasonable I suppose, considering they are cooking everybody's order fresh, and also since they accept EBT, EVERYBODY had HUGE ass orders! OH And... I paid with CASH btw...because I know you are wondering. The food is seasoned very well! Nothing special...just some Old Bay mostly...and a heavy amount of butter on the sides. It hit the spot. I must admit. I'll be coming back, no doubt.

Yelp
Hubs and I recently came across this place and decided to give them a try. Its basically a fish market that will boil or steam whatever you purchase. You can choose from several types of fish, shrimp, crab legs, lobster tails and sausage. There are a few predefined meal combos or you can create your own. I went with steamed shrimp while hubs opted for the steamed shrimp and lobster tail. As an added bonus, the clerk removed the shells from the shrimp for us prior to cooking. Gotta love that extra service. The service was quick and we were on our way home salivating the entire drive. They did an excellent job and the seasoning was perfect. We will be making our way back to them again.
google avatar

Chef N D.

Yelp
So I expected something totally different from this place. When I think New Orleans seafood I think of everything. From creole to gumbo to that e word with the ff and e. LOL. The skinny on this place is that it is a seafood market. Who knows of the seafood comes from the NO. It is fresh. Though. Also it's not authentic NO food. It's just seafood cooked to order. Or you can buy by the pound. I got some fried shrimp and it was good. It was a lot. And it was a great price. I will go back.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Spot is a little rough around the edges, but the food is good. Mom and Pop shop where they'll steam your food upon request. Fish, shrimp, crab legs at reasonable prices. The combos are a good deal and the staff is always friendly. If in the neighborhood give them a try. Pack your patience when you go tho! There is usually a line and the wait can be long at times since they cook to order. Sunday evenings are the busiest time of the week from what I've seen.

Davitta T.

Yelp
This was our first time there. I will be short and to the point. The fish was old, the shrimp was old, the broccoli was extremely spicy. The corn and potato was okay. We won't return.
google avatar

Nikky H.

Yelp
I really like this place...the crawfish, potatoes and corn are amazing and the seasoning is on point...very affordable... would definitely come here again.
google avatar

Karl M.

Yelp
My son was giving me the story of a great location for seafood... You know I had to try it. I called him to get the address from him. But he decided to get me to come over first. I followed him to this little spot on Covington Hwy. where they gave me everything I wanted Crab legs, lobster tails, Shrimps the works. Try the buttery butter sauce and, the sauce that looks like b b q sauce.
google avatar

Leslie W.

Yelp
Love how they do their steamed veggies and crab legs. Full of flavor. Their prices are good, too. The only drawback is that fishy smell. A better cleaning product would alleviate that smell no doubt.
google avatar

LaToya A.

Yelp
Not the cleanest place but it reminds me of NOLA markets and the boiled catfish and corn is amazing!! My favorite lunch spot! I get everything spicy!!
google avatar

Keenan H.

Yelp
The crab legs and shrimp are so good. Love this spot when I want some cooked seafood. You can also get it raw and cook it at home if you want
google avatar

Dausha W.

Yelp
The food is very good. It's out of the way for me; but when I remember this place, I make the trek. Fresh, you handpick what you want and they Cook it. Perfectly seasoned...

Elysea C.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to go when I'm craving crab legs and shrimp! The food is always super good with a GREAT flavor. I hate going places where crab is BLAND, they never let me down. I'll be there today! Lol
google avatar

Ronnée K.

Yelp
i basically lived here for a week and didn't eat anything else. they're fast and friendly and they accept food stamps which is also a plus. everything is reasonably priced, i would definitely visit this place as a first option.

Brenda N.

Yelp
They do have a table, but this is mainly a take out spot. It's a regular seafood market but has individual seafood meals available. You can get your meal steamed or fried with various seafood and/or fish combos. I got one #1 (fish and shrimp with a potato and corn on the cob) and one #3 (in shell crawfish with boudin and potato and corn). The #1 was $6.99 and the #6 was 7.99. Ample portion, good fresh food, and very reasonable. Friendly folks take your order and cook it up fresh in about 10 minutes for me (it was a slow time). I got mine mild and that had plenty of spice for me. It was delicious!
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
Ok, let's get this out of the way. This is a hole in the wall, so get it over it. The food is good and the fish is fresh. You buy to take home or they will fry or steam it for you there. I've gone 3x and the first two were extremely good. I got the crab legs, squid and they were really good. The side order of broccoli, potatoes & corn on the cob were good because of the butter & cajun spices. The fried fish was a little overcooked, the second time, but was really good the first time. I gave it 4 stars because off the pricing.$6.99 for tilapia is what you pay at the store, but then they cook everything free!
google avatar

Johnny D.

Yelp
The food is great, but the restaurant is dirty looking and I'm personally upset they wouldn't answer so I could order ahead. Since it is a popular place it would be nice to avoid waiting in such a line. I called 5 times with no answer...

Casaundra A.

Yelp
Im trying to call you guys! I was there hour ago! My ticket number was #99 You forgot my boudain out of my order!! Please contact me 2247339663

Yelp
Omg... Their crawfish is soooo good. Ordered 2 lbs with corn and potatoes.. Spicy! It was seasoned just right. after eating it all to myself I still wanted to go back and buy some more!

Tracie J.

Yelp
This review is really a 3.5 or 4 star review. However, the service sucked. Sure we went on a busy Friday night, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't get what we ordered and paid for. The hub and I went in and waited a very short amount of time to place our order. I ordered steamed crab legs, potatoes and broccoli, and he ordered a fried combo with 2 pieces of fish, 8 shrimp and potatoes. It was a combo that they had up on the board along with some other choices. We waited forever to get our food, but that was to be expected because it was so crowded. When we finally get our food, there were only 4 shrimp and one piece of fish. We then have to wait for them to make the rest of what we ordered which seemed like forever. Again, the order was not right. They added the other piece of fish, but not the shrimp. We had to wait again. Ridiculous! What really made us mad is the guy at the counter kept getting mad at us like we did something wrong. I was 2 seconds short of some unsavory words for him, but I was so tired and hungry that I decided it was simply not best. The only thing I said to him is we ordered what you were advertising and that's what we should get. Period. Thank goodness the food was really good, or this would be a one star review just based on the service.
google avatar

Shea B.

Yelp
I have picked up dinner from here twice this week since it is by my job. As the previous reviews have said it is not an out right restaurant. There is one picnic table in there to sit and eat quickly. It is a seafood market that will steam or fry whatever you want or just buy some seafood to take home and cook. I have ordered the steamed tilapia and shrimp with corn on the cob both times I have been here. The prices are very reasonable and the amount of food fills me up. I am glad that I can get something healthy by the job besides fast food.
google avatar

Lanisha F.

Yelp
this establishment is in the heart of Decatur and also it was very inexpensive to have a vivid combo with all the seafood you're heart desires. I had a tray that I got to pick out my own crabs or crab legs. I can't believe how rare it is to get a market to steam scallops but theirs were fresh and season to my liking. oh and yes they do except ebt yes that is the business. so to all that go they have everything you need from veggies to sausages.
google avatar

Daniel J.

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly service. A great place for crawfish or other seafood in Decatur. They only have one table in the corner so I would recommend you just do takeout. We called in advance and when we got there about 15 minutes later the food was ready for pickup. When I added multiple items over ten minutes (yeah I didn't have my act together) the guys are the counter were friendly about it. So I think the service is pretty good. We had well seasoned crawfish, mussels, corn, potatoes and boudin sausage. All delicious. I would definitely go back.

Ariana L.

Yelp
Amazing food! Tried the crawfish and it was the best I've ever had, great pricing too

Okay, So I will never ever patronize "New Orleans Seafood" on Covington Hwy in Decatur,Ga again...So I go and order Q noodles and Crab Legs I get my order to the table nice steaming hot and smells great too...I start off eating the noodles they were yummy UNTIL I pick up my Crab Legs to eat them and there was a f'n "Roach" under my Crab Legs...Needless to say I lost it spit all the noodles out my mouth burst into tears and went outside for fresh air to avoid passing out...I threw up the food I had eaten though the roach was in a separate plate from the noodles I had already eaten some of the crablegs...I was sick, digusted and an emotional wreck!!!
