How New York Ended Up With Nine Chinatowns | Eater NY

"I find New Ruan’s to be an upscale Chinese-American restaurant on 86th Street with a sprawling menu and even tiki drinks, reflecting a broader diversity of offerings in Bensonhurst." - Stefanie Tuder

Google
We ordered over 5 times from this place, and every time the food was delicious! Best egg drop soup we ever tried. The rice noodles, the beef and the fried shrimps were really fresh and tasty. As a plus, they give you little packages of gluten free soy sauce, which is amazing because my husband is celiac. He never got sick from eating at this place. Very recommended!

One of the last OG restaurants on 86st around. The owner is super cool and takes care of his customers at all times. Good food and a good place to come by for a few drinks in a nice atmosphere.

Google
The worst Chinese food around!! $25.00 for a Sesame chicken (2023) Here was the experience: There was 1 waitress for the entire fully seated restaurant and she did not come to take my order and she did not ask me a single time if I needed anything. There was terrible service. The front manager was the only one who took my order and refilled my water. The chicken rice soup side dish was disgusting. It was cheap instant powdered soup powder in water with some rice in it. The general Tsos chicken had burned sauce and burned chili’s. The sesame chicken portion arrived not very hot and it was overcooked and dry. To me it seems like a weak effort at imitating other authentic Chinese restaurants. I would not recommend this place. The quality is terrible!!

Google
Solid fusion Chinese gourmet restaurant in the neighborhood. My family have been patronizing this establishment for 2 decades and can't even recall ever having less than stellar experience while dining. You cant never go wrong with your choice of entrees as they are flavorful, distinct and succulent and will delight your senses. Big props to Jimmy who is always on the premises looking after his customers, not just regulars. Drinks are strong, food excellent and service is top notch. We are glad to have you around for a long and prosperous future.

Google
Delicious food both in the restaurant and takeout! The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Continue to come here pretty regularly for a couple of years now and the staff are friendly and efficient and even remember our vegetarian order!

Google
Ordered chicken chow mein I got a white sauce with chicken and onions it was horrible. I called and they wouldn’t even give me the right dish so I threw it out! I will never eat in or order from there again. No wonder the place is now always empty 😒

Google
This is THE most old school Chinese restaurant in Brooklyn, now that Sun Shai Kai and Richard Yee's are closed. Delicious food, perfect service and great value! The staff is so friendly and helpful, making sure you're well taken care of when ordering.

Yelp
They prepared the food fast during what seemed to be a slow lunch . The happy family was pretty good , plenty of meat and seafood . Good sauce and vegetables . The pork fried rice really dry and no char wok flavor . Was just brown The chicken curry great flavor but way more onions than chicken . The lunch special soups were good. But there was more fried rice than the lo mein and beef and broccoli. I'd give them another chance but no fried rice this time .

Yelp
Anyone who is looking for solid, really good Chinese food should stop by Ruans. I've been come here for at least 20 years. Never had a bad meal. The spare ribs are amazing. The service is always friendly and accommodating. The ambiance is nice and laid back.

Yelp
For the past two years, we have ordered from here at least once a week. No joke; very serious. We are very serious in our house about great chinese take-out, but we were left a bit perplexed from our most recent take-out experience this past weekend. It looked like the same great food, but taste-wise, something seemed off. The chicken steamed dumplings were more dry on the inside; the chicken and broccoli didn't have the same great flavors as before, but left a lingering aftertaste. My husband couldn't take the smell of the roast pork lo mein, his staple and favorite, to only be turned off by it. The delivery is always reasonable and packaged very well. For the price you are paying for any kind of take-out, this is definitely on the pricer side, but once again - it's usually worth it. I was pretty deflated from this last order and will take a break from it for a while to see if anything changes. I'm hoping it was just an off day, but there's other places I will try before running back here next week, sadly.

Yelp
Lately; everywhere I order from near where I live is such a disappointment. When you order a protein with vegetables, there is an expectation that it will have pea pods, water chestnuts, baby corn, etc. I was ecstatic when I found out that New Ruan's had exactly what I had expected and had been looking for so long!! I also really enjoy the shrimp with string beans. Absolutely delicious!

Yelp
Been here multiple times. Take out & dine in. If you seek old school, tablecloth restaurant Chinese food experience, this is it.

Tutu K.

Yelp
Foods don't taste as good as the old days and they keep increasing the prices!!Not impressed.

Yelp
This is one of the nicest old school Chinese restaurants which is very traditional and the inside is absolutely stunning. The menu is expensive and the customer service is over the top. The location on 86 street is excellent, very quaint and invokes, a sense of old world Chinatown, especially when inside. The small bar area is also very attractive and an excellent place to sit and have some drinks.

Yelp
It's not everyday that an old school Bensonhurst staple of the 1990s & 2000s not only sticks around, but manages to get it right, somehow get better and still keep its old school Brooklyn charm. New Ruan's is that rare gem! With all the recent closures of Asian gems in the area and more spots pushing their last order times earlier and earlier, New Ruan's is that staple that will never disappoint where you can get a true NYC Chinese meal at 9:30pm with enough time to spare for a drink afterwards. You get seated, the old school NYC Chinese restaurant vibes are all over the place, hot tea is delivered immediately, water is quickly poured and those crispy noodles with sauces are all dropped within the first minute of being seated by an attentive, welcoming and humorous waiter that's been there since day one. This place IS old school NYC Chinese food by definition. A place you know you will get a proper NYC Chinese meal. We ordered the string beans with beef combo which was not only delicious and fresh (string beans were actual string beans) but the roast pork fried rice was silly (not clumpy or stale) and the egg roll, well, it was a proper egg roll. Just like the ones I ate every week as a child in NYC. And I also made sure to order my personal favorite: that old school seafood pan fried noodle dish. And let me just say the following: New Ruan's always gets it right with this dish. The seafood is always fresh, the noodles are always crispy and the sauce is clean! It's so damn good that I always want more to take home. So for those that don't know, if you want that old school classic NYC Chinese food table experience, New Ruan's got you covered! You will not be disappointed. A staple of the community that has stood the test of time and should still be serving amazing NYC Chinese food well after we are all gone from this earth. No joke, you want the real deal, some nostalgia with amazing results that were just as good, if not better than you last remembered? Than look no further than New Ruan's in Bensonhurst. Facts.

Yelp
Food was delicious, (as always) fresh ingredients, delivery was quick. Overall a great meal

Yelp
You must try the best Cantonese Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup ! This soup is for two to share. However my sister and I have each ordered it so we did not have to share ! It is that good ! Their Boneless Spare Ribs are a great appetizer . Grilled Pork Chops cooked with lemon grass is Excellent ! My friend and I always order the House Special Fried Rice. This is a great side dish with anything on the menu . Gung Hay Fat Choy ! to all the wonderful people at this restaurant .

Yelp
I order take out at least once a week and sometimes eat there. Food is very good and Jimmy is always helpful. I have the sweet and sour soup spare ribs and chicken broccoli and black bean sauce. I've eaten lobster ginger scallion. The restaurant is old style Cantonese but clean and service is great. Still a good neighborhood restaurant.

Yelp
Been going to new Ruans for years with my family and it's the best food hands down! 10/10 everything
google avatar

Carissa C.

Yelp
Great service !! Very friendly and accommodating at New Ruans. You can share all dishes on the menu or eat it for yourself. The dishes served are very good portions and you will have stuff to take home. Everything comes with rice. Wonton chips with duck sauce and hot mustard will be waiting on your table. Kitchen is super fast. Good place for family.

Yelp
I have ordered here several times. Definitely satisfied as far as a fast food Chinese place. ... The food tastes good and the quality is better than most places in the area. ... I would have rated 4 stars, except for the delivery experience which was terrible. The delivery person yelled at me for not coming outside in the freezing cold, as I have a baby at home. And then continued to yell after I asked him to wait a couple of minutes while I got the money. ... I called to complain and they were courteous and apologized about it.

Yelp
I ordered orange chicken They gave me chicken with general Tsoa sauce When I pointed it out to her She showed me they put an orange peel in the general tsoa sauce Then she brought out garlic sauce and said you can put this on top of it She pointed out the sauce had orange peels on n it Hence it must be orange sauce I asked her to take it back To add insult to injury They charged me extra for this non orange Orange chicken dish Pass if your smart

Yelp
The service is great! The food is very fresh! I highly reccomend the general tsos chicken! One of my favorite chinease places in the area!

Yelp
It is so important to represent so many great Chinese restaurants in my home area of near Bensonhurst and I am sad I did not review New Ruan earlier when the memories of the meal itself were fresher. I first due to my brother in-laws' recommendation. I would normally not receive news of such a place because I do not participate enough I bring you this review in English to bring their excellency to a wider audience including Chinese Brooklyites who may not read Chinese such as I. While there're so many nearby great Chinese restaurants such as Yummy Rice (formerly King's Taste) and Hometown Restaurant both on 18 Av, New Ruan's is also excellent and worthy of your attention. I don't remember the meal I had here precisely as it was 8mos ago other than we used it for my in-laws' birthday celebration and it was as grand, big, delicious, and feast-like a birthday meal as we'd all hoped. Will update closer to the next visit.

Yelp
All of the food tasted like grease. Even things that you wouldn't think would taste like grease tasted like grease. The dumplings were tough and overdone. The noodles were so greasy they could coat your mouth. I ordered the boneless ribs, and they were more like rib tips. Very little meat, lots of fat, and dry. The rice was over done and tasted like oil as well. The delivery was efficient, and on time. But the food was not great, and was super expensive. I am sure there are other restaurants in the neighborhood that serve the same meal for a lot less. I did like the fresh duck sauce. It was a good touch even though I needed more to drown out the taste of everything else. Overall, I wouldn't recommend.

Yelp
Was really wanting some Chinese food during the lockdown but every restaurant was closed. Someone posted this one on FB so I gave them a shot. It is certain that I will order from here many times if they continue delivering to my area once the lockdown has been lifted. I got a couple of entrees to have some food for a few days: chicken and broccoli, plain fried rice and an egg roll, and an order of chicken lo mein with plain fried rice and an egg roll. I was overjoyed to see that this restaurant serves fried rice that is a dark brown color. Most restaurants serve this pale yellow looking stuff that to me is not fried rice at all. The only other place I've found that has dark brown fried rice is Chopstix, however, any time I order it, some of the rice is still white and it's bland due to Chopstix being more interested in speed than quality. This place had dark, wonderfully flavored fried rice. The broccoli in the dish was the way I like it, which is probably very different than most. I do not like hard, crunchy broccoli that seems as if it was thrown into hot water for 10 seconds and then put into the meal. I like it to be soft all the way through and it was. It was just a terrific lunch. The lo mein was a dark brown color with good flavor and is on the "order again" list as well. The egg roll was NOT greasy at all and had a thick, nice coating. Delivery time was about 60 minutes which is totally understandable since they are a couple of miles away from me.

Yelp
I have eaten at this restaurant multiple times and it has always been absolutely excellent but last night they put a sculpted carrot in my dish in the shape of awhich they have done in the past and it is absolutely beautiful however... When I took home a doggy bag I asked that the carrot sculpture go in the doggy bag as well. The waiter told me no we need it we reuse it. I was absolutely horrified I had picked it up and touched it my husband had picked it up and touched it so God only knows how many other hands have touched it and this actually goes into your food which I find absolutely positively despicable and disgusting. They absolutely need to be stopped !!! It may be a Board of Health issue.

Lori B.

Yelp
Decided to treat myself to ribs. Something I never eat so I want an experience. Most tasteless hunks of meat ever. Probably my whole meal will follow suit. Most overrated Chinese joint in town! Oh gross again. Trying my egg roll. No flavor! If I'm going to eat greasy junk food I want it to taste good! This is all going in the garbage along with my 40 bucks. You were good 20 years ago. Now you suck. Time to close up shop.

Jose B.

Yelp
PLEASE AVOID TRYING OUT THE FOOD FROM HERE! I've tried giving this place a try twice & it was just not good at all. There's a reason why this place is ALWAYS empty, & it's cause their food taste EXTREMELY STALE! Like...ZERO FLAVOR. Seriously, I've never had fried rice that tasted so bland. Their wings were just as bland. Who the hell knows how long they are freezing their food for - BUT IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT FRESH AT ALL!!! I'm surprised they never got shut down smh. Terrible experiences here.
google avatar

Jae T.

Yelp
Rating this solely on delivery. Best Chinese food in the area. Very quick and efficient. The food is amazing. Great portion size, the chicken is so crispy, & flavorful. I love how they give oranges in every delivery. It's pretty cool and different. I highly recommend the general Tso Chicken, & Shrimp with Broccoli in garlic Sauce, both with egg fried rice.
google avatar

Joylene Yee H.

Yelp
Amazing food and excellent customer service! My husband and I dined in here for dinner. Their peking duck tastes so good and it is the best one I've tasted so far here in Brooklyn. :) a must try indeed!
google avatar

Erica A.

Yelp
Ordered two quarts of chicken rice soup. There was a lot of chicken but it was slimy and chewy. Absolutely disgusting. Had to throw out both quarts

Scarlett J.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely delicious. We ordered so many different dishes and enjoyed every single one! They have amazing lychee martinis and our waitress Mai is the sweetest, amazing costumer service! 10/10 recommend if you want a nice little neighborhood Chinese food night!
google avatar

Justin Z.

Yelp
This place was amazing years ago... now you order three dishes and they give you one small order of rice. Everything is so much more expensive and the quality of the food has dropped. No flavor on the classic dishes and basically it feels like they just want money without offering the goods like they used to.
google avatar

Jordan J.

Yelp
Our meal was absolutely delicious! The best Chinese around if you ask me! The egg drop soup was perfect not thick and jello like. The fried rice was actual fried rice and not just yellow rice. Chicken and broccoli was amazing and the brown sauce is perfect!

Anthony S.

Yelp
The food was excellent and the service was great! The restaurant was quiet and comfortable, and was able to accommodate my special needs. Child! Will definitely go back for more from this establishment.

Annie L.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday night with my boyfriend and we each ordered a combination plate. The combination usually comes with pork fried rice and an egg roll, but my boyfriend cannot have pork, so the waitress suggested swapping vegetable fried rice and vegetable egg roll for him, which he did. The food came out and we started eating (taste is mediocre). My boyfriend bit into his egg roll to discover that it had PORK. I cut into mine and saw that it was the vegetable one. This mistake could've been avoided if they had not been so careless. It was not a busy night (there were two other tables being served but customers were already done eating) so there was no excuse for this, especially when we told the waitress in advance. I would not recommend this place.

Deborah B.

Yelp
I always enjoy my takeout and the delivery person was friendly and polite. Always great service and order was delivered in a timely fashion.
google avatar

Devon M.

Yelp
Expensive but worth it! Great food and soups. Their hot and sour is one of the best and the house made noodles are a very big hit!
google avatar

Lana B.

Yelp
The best Chinese food I've had in a long time. It's a lil further than I'd prefer but they have been consistently fresh and delicious to take the ride or a 25 min walk even (you'll burn off one crab Rangoon lol ) Boneless rib tips Pork fried rice Crab Rangoons Beef and broccoli General Tsos Chicken Everything was great! So glad I found it
google avatar

Marisa L.

Yelp
I have been going to this restaurant since it opened and I believe it is still under the same manager. The food is always high-quality and delicious and the service is also impeccable. I do find the prices to be a bit high for the neighborhood and the space but generally choose it because I know it is worth it. I will always come back to here.

Jiayi F.

Yelp
Ordered a Peking duck. Total cost is $55 for two dishes ( Peking duck and bird nest of the duck meat). The duck came over cooked. The skin is just a few pieces. Pretty sure it's not even a whole duck. They put Chinese chips under to skin to make it look like a lot of food. The duck skin has 0 meat. Instead of celery to put with the duck skin they give us scallion??? The bun turn out to be taco wraps. (6 total only). The bird nest is ok but together they not worth the $55 we paid. Was suppose to be for Mother's Day dinner. So embarrassed to present this to my mom.

Kat H.

Yelp
Ordered several dishes and all of them were overly salty. Even though the staff were very friendly, would not return as there is an abundance of options for Chinese food along 86 St.
google avatar

Jared A.

Yelp
The service here is really good. I only started going there recently after years of walking by and only eating at Liu's Shanghai on bath ave. Their sweet or sour chicken dishes are very meat heavy and not just crunchy popcorn style chicken. The soups such as grilled chicken soup is super tender and delicious. It feels like a great place for families to go as the manager? Owner? Is very friendly and loves to get to know people. The place is a bit dark inside, but I actually like it because it's more peaceful.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Amazing quality of food, great ambiance, reasonable prices, and the best service ever. You can't go wrong. Baby lamb chops are incredible!

John K.

Yelp
I'm a frequent customer and the food is good . But the last few times things have been going down hill . Tonight the food was so bad that I'm done with this place . The fried rice was like eating a yr old rice . The shrimp were thrown away right after having one in lobster sauce . Sorry but time for change !!!! See ya !!!
google avatar

Eleanor V.

Yelp
Food is really good.. Not greasy good quality Chinese food!! A little pricey but very worth it Service is impeccable!! I highly recommend if you don't mind paying more for good food !!
google avatar

Yelp
If you are looking for a simple Chinese restaurant to go it at that's not like a typical take out place this is it. This place has been around for years and I remember it from when I was a little girl I used to come here. The food was always good and which is why I continue to eat here still. It's a bit more money than take out but it's worth it. It is a better quality food also. I usually get dished like chicken and broccoli , or a noodle dish. They give a decent size portion when you get the combo. It also comes with an egg roll and a soup to start with. I actually haven't taken it to go in a long time. I usually just eat there. Last time I got the chow fun and it came in a dish with three sections. One side with noodles, another side with rice and than an egg roll. I was beyond full and actually couldn't finish my food. It's also very tasteful the food. I would defiantly continue to eat here.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
I use to like this place but now it's falling out. We ordered the duck and what's supposed to be "filet mignon". The duck was ok but it looked like they added pieces from another plate that someone didn't wanna eat. It was two legs and some other pieces, one of the legs looked like someone ate the meat off of it. Two of the oysters had an extremely fishy taste that was horrible. The filet mignon was tough and flat. Not very happy this last time. Unfortunately we aren't going back.
google avatar

Lorraine B.

Yelp
Went for dinner with the family and we enjoyed our time there. The resturant is small and very cozy. Everyone enjoyed The dishes we had selected. The food taste great and the staff were wonderful. I would go there again. Great place for a date or family.

Jake L.

Yelp
I have been living in bensonhurst for years and been coming to ruans for years. They never disappoint on their food quality and I could say after all these years there has been only one occasion when they failed to live up to their high standard. This ain't your typical takeout Chinese restaurant but a gourmet quality and fine dining establishment. Idont know any other place like it in the neighborhood aside from mega dimsum places that are opening up these days but I'm not into dimsum type restaurants. Cocktails are never watered down and pretty strong at a very reasonable price. Thank you jimmy for your consistency and professionalism and excellent service.
google avatar

Tory L.

Yelp
New Ruans is one of those old school Chinese-American restaurants you dont see too much of these days. It's not a take out kitchen (but of course they do take out and delivery) but a traditional banquet table style, cloth table clothes, old school waiter place. Yes the interior looks like its from the 70's but thats part of the nostalgia feel. This isnt a Sichuan/fusion/mission style place, this is egg foo young, spareribs, chow mein joint and in my mind there is a place for that. My favorite dish here is the beef and broccoli, so simple but so often done wrong. Here the beef is fork tender and the broccoli has just enough crunch on it. The sauce is great as well. The pork fried rice is the brown grains and has big cubes of pork. The chicken wings are plump and juicy. The only thing I dont care for is their won ton soup which is too watery. If you eat in you have to get a drink. Pina Colada is almost a must, it's a known fact that if you want to get a good strong drink in this city you go to a Chinese restaurant. The Chinese are not cheap with their booze and make a strong drink God bless them. Another thing I love about this place is if you get delivery they give you a free orange. You gotta love that.

H.P. B.

Yelp
Solid Chinese food. Dined in and ordered out. Good service and food. Their drinks are very good too.
google avatar

Leo K.

Yelp
Really like this spot, whether I dine in or order out. The service here is always good, and the delivery guys are really nice. I have tried just about everything on the menu, and not much disappointed me. The first time I ever had Pan Fried Noodles was here, and I get them every time ever since. They are really flavorful and the texture is perfect, crispy first and then al dente when you mix them with the sauce. The food is higher quality then your normal take out . A good go to spot, always good and always consistent
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Absolutely loved their food!! Lucky for me this spot happens to be right in my neighborhood. I have passed this place several times and I didn't think to stop here until a friend suggested we have dinner here. As soon as you are seated there are crispy noodles and duck sauce waiting and they are very good. Service was amazing. They were extremely attentive and gave us plenty of time to order but remained close when we were ready. I ordered a chicken and broccoli with fried rice and it was a pretty good price. They have lots of special combination platters. The mean, rice, soup and an egg roll is about 10 dollars. The food is very fresh and it comes out nice and hot. The portions are large enough that you will likely take some of the food home. I would highly recommend this are for chinese food especially in this area because it is really amazing and the other restaurants are not good at all.

Yelp
Visited this restaurant by chance, I was with a friend who went there to say Hi to the Owner.. So, decided to take something to go after hearing that they are known for a good ginger scallion dish (we love ginger scallion seafood). Pork dumplings filling was good but the dough was too thick to my taste. Ginger and Scallion Lobster noodles was delicious, surprisingly tasty lobster. We might not try again this place just because it's far from where we live so not a delivery option. But menu has some interesting options, also for shellfish lovers included oysters...
