After hiking six miles I was famished. For once, I wish there were pictures on the extensive menu because all I could think was "feed me." It goes way beyond pho with the 8 plus pages of options. I went with the seafood hot pot, not really knowing what to expect. What it turns out to be is a bubbling cauldron of hot and sour soup. It was easily large enough for four as a starter. Loaded with mussels, shrimp, calamari, and shrimp.
It is rare that I am surprised, but the soup had such a depth of flavor. Dispel any references to Chinese take-out. Here you find a broth with an amalgamation of tamarind, soft notes of cumin, and other spices. It had a loofah-like vegetable I couldn't decipher and who would think pineapples were right at home. The vegetables retain their crispiness and was a nice textural contrast.
I was warmly welcomed and the staff was pleasant and on their game. It is not fine dining but the atmosphere is definitely nicer than your average Vietnamese restaurant. There were several large screen televisions, but I am glad they were all on mute. The prices will also be higher than average, but this time I believe you get what you pay for based on my dish. Many family style options, so I recommend gathering some friend and go off book to discover new culinary adventures.
This block on Federal is a Viet hub. I thought the adjoining deli was the same establishment, but they have separate owners. Go next door for their dessert like drinks. Both spots are great. Only a few spots out front but there is a good sized free lot at the corner. Not the prettiest part of town with the commercial hum but the flavor is worth it.
