We came to New South Kitchen & Bar for a staff meeting lunch with our newly formed team, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The food was great...Southern comfort done right, and the service was top notch. You could tell the sweet tea was made with love, and the biscuits for the table were warm, buttery, and perfectly complemented by the blackberry jam our server thoughtfully brought out. That little touch made a big impression. We left full, happy, and already talking about how this spot is going into our official Wednesday post-meeting lunch rotation. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a welcoming atmosphere, great service, and food that hits the spot.

Google
A great place for lunch in the Arboretum. Clean and spacious. Our waiter was attentive and the food was well presented. We ordered three small plates and shared between the two of us. Fried green tomatoes; deviled eggs and a mushroom flat bread. The dishes were neither badly prepared nor exceptional in any way. Nothing stood out. However, if ever the the opportunity arises, I’m willing to give it another try

First time here and we had a great meal. Everything was absolutely delicious and the presentation was just as good. This is a place where the chef takes great pride. Will definitely be back!

Google
Small place. Clean. High tables and regular tables. Staff was friendly and professional. Nice size bar. First time for us. Photos of food attached. Dishes are represented well. Deviled eggs have horseradish in them. We return and try different food items.

Google
Nothing to brag about, but I’ll brag. Why not! It’s actually amazing. The atmosphere is cozy and warm. Great seating and bar area. And the food is delicious! I ordered the delicious Fried Chicken Sandwich and did not disappoint.

Google
I can’t say enough about our dinner here last week. Everything was perfect. Our server was very knowledgeable, experienced and helpful with selections. The appetizers and meal were impeccable. The surprise take home chocolates were eaten on the way home, so good. We went there about 3 years ago and were not impressed. Last week was a complete opposite experience. Try it!! What

Google
Great restaurant in the Arboretum Shopping Center. Very nicely prepared and presented dishes. They have a full bar with a nice atmosphere. The service was friendly and efficient. Everything that I have ever eaten here has been top-notch! They are also aware of presentation. Cheers!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting this modern southern style restaurant for brunch, and I must say, the flavors and dishes transported me to the heart of the South. The restaurant had a trendy and inviting ambiance that perfectly complemented the delicious fare they had to offer. Let's start with the highlight of the meal - the chicken. It was nothing short of excellent. The succulent, perfectly cooked chicken had a crispy golden crust that sealed in the juicy goodness. Each bite was a harmonious blend of flavors, with just the right amount of seasoning. It was clear that the chefs had put great effort into ensuring that the chicken was the star of the show, and they succeeded admirably. Accompanying the chicken were the delectable potatoes. These Southern-style potatoes were wonderfully seasoned and perfectly cooked. They had a crispy exterior, giving way to a soft and tender center. Each bite was a heavenly blend of flavors, with hints of herbs and spices that enhanced the overall experience. These potatoes were truly a standout addition to the meal. The biscuits were another delightful component of the brunch. They were flaky, buttery, and had a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Freshly baked to perfection, you can enjoy these on their own or with the jams and butters available, but either way the biscuits were an absolute delight. Now, onto the only downside of the experience—the wait for the food. Unfortunately, the wait was longer than expected, which detracted from an otherwise enjoyable dining experience. While I understand that we did go on a holiday, we did make reservations, were seated on time, and still had to wait over an hour. However, it's worth noting that the quality of the dishes did make up for the delay to some extent. Despite the longer wait, I would still highly recommend New South Kitchen & Bar for their wide variety of southern offerings. The chicken, potatoes, and biscuits were simply outstanding, showcasing the rich and comforting flavors of the South. If you're looking for a taste of Southern cuisine with a modern twist, this restaurant is the place to be. Just be prepared for a potential wait, as the food is definitely worth it. The flavors, attention to detail, and ambiance combined to create a truly enjoyable brunch. I'll definitely be returning to savor more of their mouthwatering dishes.

Yelp
The place was spotless and packed with people. It's apparently a very popular lunch destination. It might have been just lucky timing but I was seated in a booth quickly. Shout out to Neely who was my and my colleagues' waitress. She did a fine job taking our orders and keeping up with refills. The food is pure comfort. I ordered the blackened catfish and mac and cheese. What a surprise I got when the fish was topped with shrimp and served on a bed of creamy grits. It wasn't called out in the menu description so it was a true value add. Both the fish and the mac were out of this world delicious and the pricing was just right. Also the portions were perfectly sized. This will be a place I will return to again and again.

Yelp
Dined here for brunch on my birthday with family as I wanted to try something different. The restaurant was very clean and we were seated immediately. Our server Neeley was really sweet and attentive. We asked about specials and favorite men items. She recommended the chicken and waffles of which you could get a Belgium waffle or a cheddar waffle. We tried both kinds and they were both great. The chicken strips were fried to perfection. Also got the breakfast burrito with the braised beef which had an interesting taste with the cheddar cheese. I doubt that I would order it again. Not a fan. The fresh fruit was good. Dessert she recommended the brownie and chewy ice cream. I was hesitant on the cherry ice cream. She assured me it was good. She was right, it more so tasted like a strawberry ice cream. She informed us that many of the items were made in house and that the menu changes a lot. They gave me truffles that were made in house as a small gift for my birthday! Cute space with great service!

Yelp
You can be envious of my eggplant truffle fries. Or if you like salty and sweet-my melt in your mouth heirloom tomato salad with local feta, bacon, and arugula. Or you can quell your envy and get yourself your own while summer is still here! Being farm to table if you wait too long and miss it, well then you can post what you got and we can be the ones drooling. Lighting and sound were perfect, my booth seat was comfy, and staff was wonderful. New South has been around for over a decade for a good reason, they are reliably great.

Yelp
We visited new South kitchen and bar for the first time on Mother's Day after reading several reviews on my yelp feed. I thought this would be a good opportunity for us to try the restaurant out, especially on such a special occasion. That being said, we found the restaurant very enjoyable. We have reservations for 2 PM and when we arrived, our table wasn't ready yet so we sat at the bar which was mostly empty. We waited we ordered a couple of drinks, a martini and a vodka tonic. The French martini was one of the menu specials and my significant other found it very good. Once we were seated at our table, we started our order. As we were a bit late for brunch, we decided to get a mix of brunch and lunch so ordered the chicken fried steak and scrambled eggs with cheese grits and she had the fried chicken with a side of collard greens. The chicken fried steak platter was pretty good. The steak was fried perfectly with a really fluffy and crispy crust. I could've used a bit more gravy, and they also included a small salad with pickled onions that was layered on top of the fried chicken steak patty. I would've preferred the salad on the side but just be picky. There was also on the bottom of the platter chicken fried steak. I wasn't really sure if it was some sort of orange juice or complementary sauce but either way, it wasn't needed. fried chicken was really good as well. Fried perfectly. We did request hot sauce when it arrived at the table, but unfortunately the hot sauce didn't make it back to the table before we were finished. Outside of a couple of times the server forgot to bring a couple of requested items back to the table, service was overall strong. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant and advise that you get reservations on busy days and holidays.

Yelp
This is our go-to restaurant in the neighborhood. They do a great job with seafood - we had the swordfish recently and it was perfectly cooked. Their fried oysters are the best we've had in Charlotte - very delicately battered and lightly fried and served with a small "salad" of pickled onions and slaw. Other standouts are shrimp and grits and perfectly fried chicken.
google avatar

Yelp
The host greeted us warmly, creating a friendly and inviting atmosphere. The overall vibe was a mix of a classic diner setting with a nighttime feel. It took about five minutes for our waitress to come to our table, though. The chairs at our table could use some attention; they were quite loose, and the padding was worn down. As for the food, it was fine--not exceptional, but not bad. The fried green tomatoes were a bit too soft, possibly overcooked. My wife had the pot roast with mashed potatoes, which she enjoyed. I tasted it too--it had good flavor and a generous portion size. I opted for the fried chicken with mac and cheese. The chicken consisted of two boneless breasts and was tasty. The mac and cheese was just okay; it could benefit from a unique twist to enhance the flavor. Cocktail prices seemed high for the venue, so we went with a rum mixed drink and a beer, both of which were reasonably priced and enjoyable. Overall, we'd return, though it wasn't an immediate favorite.

Yelp
There's no better place in Charlotte to get fish. The owners are spot on quality and prepared perfectly. Their restaurant is one of the hidden gems of south Charlotte. I highly recommend this place to everyone
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
Food and service was very good and the prices are reasonable. The restaurant is also pleasing to the eye.

Laurie M.

Yelp
I love this place. Great food, reasonable prices and nice ambiance. Service is great too. I love their crab cakes. A Bacardi and Diet Coke is only $6. Can't beat it
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
I planned dinner with my mom, aunt, grandmother, which is a tough group to please. Everyone, even my vegetarian aunt, enjoyed their meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I look forward to coming back and seeing what's new on the menu! They even had a decent selection of local craft beer.

Claire C.

Yelp
Fave restaurant in Charlotte! Great cocktails, delicious lowcountry choices. Friendly staff. Love it!
google avatar

Beth B.

Yelp
The atmosphere here was really comfortable and the menu had lots of creative choices. I had the savory cheese and chive waffle with chicken. The gravy wasn't to my liking but the jalapeño pepper jelly was outstanding. Also, you've got to try the baked pimento cheese with crispy wontons!
google avatar

Swaz F.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with this Arboretum local favorites. They always served up the best of Southern comfort foods. The drinks are always well made. I'm picky about my Lemon drop martini and never had to send any back here. I took off a star because the service was a bit slow but I guess every restaurant is struggling right now with getting good help. We waited a long time to get our check.

Brooke B.

Yelp
The service was incredible the people who work here are very kind and take pride in their food as well as this restaurant. The food is delicious and not too highly priced for what you get. Very yummy and such a great staff. Highly recommend

Yelp
Well here is another update on New South - once again really good last night - Had a party of four. It really is Farm and Sea to Table ! Great dinner with Shrimp and Grits, Fried Chicken, Chicken and Waffles ! Lots of Appetizers - Goat Cheese tart and Fried Tomatoes ! Great drinks and incredible Hot Apple Pie and Chocolate Mousse and a Grasshopper for dessert ! I will post pictures !

Yelp
When you walk in, the decor is plain and seems a bit tired. I was concerned as the restaurant was not busy at 6:30 on a Saturday night. But the food surprised me. We had the flounder, beet salad and the shrimp and grits. All were very good. Service was fine - not stellar but ok. Food was a little slow but nothing to cause any negatives. Desert was the blueberry fried pie. Was excited about it when I ordered it but it was bland. BE AWARE - the menu changes with what's available from their farm partners. The menu was very different than what they had on the website - disappointing as we had picked the place based on a couple things on the menu on their website and those items were not available.

Yelp
My son had a football game not far from here so I stopped by for takeout on the way home. I called my order in for fried okra, salmon, grits and spinach. The guy at the bar was super nice and assured me that I would enjoy my food and that what I ordered was a good choice. Everything was indeed great, the grits were creamy, the salmon was cooked perfectly, and the okra was good as well. Looking forward to returning.

David L.

Yelp
Friday night I had their wedge salad, which is a favorite of mine, and it is still the best in wedge salad in Charlotte. I went old school and had the meat loaf. It is excellent. If you want good food you can't do better than New South.
google avatar

Diana S.

Yelp
Love this local farm to table establishment in a very unassuming location. The food is southern comfort cuisine but elevated to almost fine dining. The fried chicken, blackened meatloaf with bacon jam and the beet salad are my favorites. The fried blueberry pie is a delicious dessert, simple to execute but ingenious. The servers are well versed with the menu, friendly and attentive. I've seen the same staff here over time and I feel like that's a good sign. It's a family run restaurant that must be a great place to work.

Lisa H.

Yelp
Our visit today was a bit disappointing. Service was very slow. Biscuits were delicious. Deviled eggs were fantastic. Entrées were not as good as they have been in the past. Chicken and waffles... very small chicken portion and over cooked. Quiche was over heated.
google avatar

Mary H.

Yelp
It certainly helps that the cocktail menu is strong here. I started with a gin drink, The Last Word, that came with a floating edible flower. I had to stop myself from eating all the biscuits they brought to the table. Despite it being a big plate, I finished the entire plate of Shrimp & Grits. Our entire group enjoyed our meals. I might return just to hang in the bar area that looks upscale, but could be a casual spot for watching a game with friends.
google avatar

Joan R.

Yelp
Had lunch ( brunch menu see photo ,) here. comfortable but plain atmosphere, friendly service. Prices reasonable. Food choices ok. we ordered: make your own omelet with grits, shrimp and grits and chicken salad on a bed of salad plus a cup of muddled seafood chowder, plus biscuits on the table. Food plated nicely, good portions, came out hot. Biscuits very tasty, my seafood chowder great flavor hardly any seafood or fish in it. Basically $4 for a cup of liquid. My pesto chicken salad tasty but not exceptional. My lunch mates enjoyed their food and said food was very tasty. I would return and try something else. So far not overly impressed.
google avatar

Rick D.

Yelp
So now we have been here for brunch & Dinner and have not been disappointed. The biscuits they give you while your waiting for your meal are very good. The food was very good. The service was good. The ambiance was good, the restaurant needs so fixing up seems to have taken a beating in the short time it has been around and the benches need to be re-filled or something, they just are not as comfortable. The only thing that is preventing me in providing 5 stars is the above everything is very good, nothing screams I can not get this somewhere else. Nothing special menu wise, that I can not get or have seen somewhere else. I Do recommend them because they are very good.
google avatar

April H.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times now and each time enjoyed the meal very much. The service is outstanding and the ingredients are fresh and delicious. The fried green tomato appetizer is good and somewhat sour which I like. The pork schnitzel is my favorite entree so far and my husband liked the snapper and swordfish. He also said that New South makes the best sweet potatoes he has had in his entire life. For beverages I am into their Charleston Mule, it is tasty and refreshing.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Best shrimp and grits ever. Awesome, local restaurant focused on locally sourced food and ingredients. They rotate the menu from season to season and I can't wait to go back to see what's new.

Jordan H.

Yelp
A great little spot we just found out about in the arboretum. The shrimp and grits were our favorite! They had great service
google avatar

Daryl H.

Yelp
Good food and friendly staff, please bring back to the menu, potatoe soup, pictures looks great on website, our waitress, Nell, was terrific and even tried to get the chef to make the soup, he said that he couldn't get the potatoes he needed for soup, what did he use for mashed potatoes? Please don't try to be a trendy wine spot, you can sell wines, but don't try to be everything to everyone! That's just my point of view, front a local senior citizen. Good
google avatar

Leigh J.

Yelp
Really enjoy dining here. Fresh seafood and nicely prepared. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

Quinton B.

Yelp
Great food great service and upbeat atmosphere. Went there with a few friends with no reservations the waitress was fantastic cutting up with us and having a good time. Served us and kept an eye out for us but didn't hound us she was there if we needed. You should go!

LJ C.

Yelp
My first time here...really enjoyed Sunday brunch. Ambience was delightful. Quiet, nice feel - not too casual and not stuffy. Spicy bloody mary was flavorful and not super spicy - great for brunch. Others enjoyed their mimosas. Delicious shrimp and grits. Very creamy and tasty - not soupy and not overly spiced. Amazing beef hash with poached egg. Nice pork belly and egg. Homemade biscuit. Bourbon french toast plate could have benefited from another half piece but my husband said the two half slices he had were good. Everything was fresh. Service was good. We enjoyed our visit and plan to return for another brunch.

Yelp
shoutout to @newsouthkitchen for making Thanksgiving 2020 a little easier #latergram #thanksgivingdinner #newsouthkitchenandbar #curbsidepickup #supportlocalrestaurants #foodievida
google avatar

Ashlee W.

Yelp
Our Thanksgiving was saved this year thanks to New South. Instead of having to cook for just 2 people, we were able to pick up our meals the day before Thanksgiving to enjoy at home. The sweet potatoes were great and we decided to add our own touch by toasting mini marshmallows on top. I think the biggest surprise was the Turkey. My husband and I didn't have very high expectations for it, but we were so pleasantly surprised by how flavorful and juicy this Turkey breast was! I'm very thankful that restaurants like this are able to stay open during COVID. They really made our Thanksgiving away from home much more familiar with the traditional meal. :)
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
Went for Sunday brunch. I debated between several options and opted for the steak and eggs. I think I chose wrong. The steak had virtually no seasoning. It was covered in a gravy that sounded delicious but also lacked flavor. The eggs were cooked well but also no seasoning. It was just a really bland meal. My server seemed like he was in way over his head. He would ask how things were going as he passed with out a pause to wait for an answer. The couple at the next table received salads that were not dressed. He made excuses rather than admit a mistake. I have been here for dinner and loved it. I will be back, probably not for a brunch.
google avatar

Megan T.

Yelp
We came here for dinner the weekend before Christmas with my aunt. We made reservations through open table and even got an email confirmation. When we got there, they had no record of our reservation, so we had to sit at a high top table in the bar. No big deal, but there are reasons why you make reservations. We started off with the deviled eggs and and pimento cheese wontons. Both were good, but the wontons were not cheesy or what I expected, just had a pimento cheese decorative sauce line on the plate rather than on or in the wontons. Also kind of pricey when you only get three. For dinner we ordered the chicken and waffles, pork chop and pork shoulder and split three sides - squash, succotash, and mac and cheese. The chicken and waffles were good, but I've had better. The jalapeno jelly was too spicy and I like spicy foods. The pork chop was okay, but loved the pork shoulder!! The sides were just okay to me, nothing outstanding and pretty pricey for the small amount you get on one plate. Would we be back? Sure, but it won't be my first thought.

Tramela M.

Yelp
Omg, we found this hidden gem by us last week. I was wanting for some fried chicken and that is completely what I got with fried okra to boot. What I would change is that the fried chicken is breast meat which can dry out fast. I want my fried chicken dark meat (personal favorite). But we would definitely try this restaurant soon again.

Wendy K.

Yelp
It is unusual for us to return to a restaurant frequently in a short period of time, but New South has proven to be a local "go-to" place. The food tastes fresh every time. The servers are informative and attentive. And the interior and atmosphere are very relaxing and conducive to a positive dining experience. The tables are spaced apart so it makes for a very comfortable atmosphere. I recommend it whether or not you are looking for "southern" food. There is something for everyone on this menu.
google avatar

Gabrielle Z.

Yelp
New South's menu is made surrounding seasonal ingredients from the Carolinas. They take pride in supporting family owned farms that use sustainable, all natural farming methods. They make sure the beef, pork and poultry they acquire are raised with no antibiotics or artificial growth hormones, and they make sure their seafood is sustainably fished or farmed in Carolina waters. They even have a gluten free menu! New South is most known for their deviled egg appetizer. This comes with 2 eggs of each: traditional, bacon, and pickle stuffing. Their yolk stuffing is unique in that you can taste a kick of mustard! I also recommend their other popular appetizer, the Pork Belly. This dish consists of pork belly cubes on top of sweet potato and pecan salad, and an orange glaze. The Pork Loin is arguable the best entree on the menu. A nice sized filet of pork is laid on top of baked mac and cheese, collards, bbq jus, and topped with apple chutney. The sauce on here -- sweet apple with a hint of spice -- really makes the dish!

Robert I.

Yelp
New, clean, great service great food no wait on Sunday morning. I hate to give up the secret but this place is too good not to celebrate and share.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a unique restaurant located in a shopping area. There is plenty of parking in the shared lot. Upon entering I was greeted and seated once the rest of my party arrived. I went on a Saturday night and it wasn't too crowded. I did have a reservation. They have paper menus. I was told that they change their menus rather often and this is why they have just a plain paper menu. I have the goat cheese as an appetizer which was very tasty the combinations of the bread goat cheese arugula honey and other toppings made it dance on my tongue. I quite liked the roasted chicken. However the side of the sweet potatoes were plain and lacked flavor this is something that they could get rid off their menu. The mac & cheese was not as tasty as I expected either. I was told that it was made in a pot on the stove and then put in the oven to bake for a few minutes. The greens were flavorful and yummy. The scallops and shrimp were a good combination together and had a great texture and taste. When it came to desserts the banana rum cake was divine. They service that our table received was basic there was nothing spectacular she met our our needs with a few reminders we gave. My martini was delightful. It's a nice place.
google avatar

Rick L.

Yelp
Stopped in today for brunch. Really liked the selections. Started with a cup of Brunswick stew. Nicely seasoned and full of flavors. Then had the Eggs Savannah. This is probably the best dish I have had in Charlotte in months. Poached eggs on top of country ham and sliced tomatoes, grilled homemade biscuit. Dressed w a fabulous red eye gravy. From the creaminess of the yolk to the saltiness of the gravy. The combination was outstanding. I wanted more! Toques off to the chef!

Bob P.

Yelp
Excellent! I never had a better omelet anywhere. Service, ambiance outstanding. A very pleasant experience.
google avatar

Caroline G.

Yelp
Food was good and tasted scrumptious and they had friendly staff; but, the service was slow getting our food.
google avatar

Jill K.

Yelp
Perfection!!! Great ambience, terrific menu. We loved our experience. The nod to the government's assumption that it can unilaterally take tables was warmingly poetic.

Denise V.

Yelp
Love the farm to table restaurants. Fresh food from local farmers is fantastic. The chef comes up with great and different dishes. Service is so friendly and informative.
google avatar

Myra B.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Attentive and friendly staff waiting to serve you! A unique gem in the Arboretum shopping center.

Yelp
I recently had New South Kitchen cater a nonprofit board event. The service is impeccable, and the food cannot be beat. If you haven't eaten at New South Kitchen yet, you are definitely missing out. The menu is creative, and one dish is more delicious than the next! Give it a shot you won't regret it!

Yelp
We were looking for a local ace to try and this one popped up. Everything was excellent. The only thing I would say they could do better is having the biscuits come out warm but that is just a personal preference. As for dinner I had the bacon, egg and cheese burger. It was cooked perfect. The bacon tomato jam was very good and the bun was soft and toasted just right. My daughter had the grilled cheese (She started eating before I could get a picture) which she enjoyed very much. Also her side of fruit was a good fruit cup with strawberry's and grapes. None of that melon filler fruit no one eats. My wife had the pot roast with grits for a side. Everyone was very nice and it had a great atmosphere. We will be back again soon. Well I spoke too soon. We ended up with the apple cobbler desert and it was awesome. It took 8 minutes because it comes out fresh and it was perfect.

Yelp
Popped by here one evening. Was happy to find that they have a few outdoor tables. The have a great assortment of meals which are definitely New Southern! I got a fantastic beet salad with a delicious fondue like cheese to the side. A couple next to me was enjoying a bottle of wine and two more substantial entrees. I'll be back to check out more!

T I.

Yelp
Our meal was delicious (okra salad & penne pasta dish). The service was fast & appropriately responsive to our needs. New South is one of go to when we want quality food & service at a reasonable price.
