There are some nights in which you sit at home, the TV on, not knowing what to watch and not knowing what to do. Suddenly, you also realize you're also hungry. You've been so busy all day, doing things, accomplishing things - conquering the world - that you have forgotten a bit about the most important person in the world - you. Usually, in those moments, a run to the refrigerator to grab whatever you can will suffice - an underwhelming choice by all means. But not that Friday night.
Instead of the refrigerator, I opened my Yelp app and instructed my girlfriend to pick a place she liked. And there it was New York Grilled Cheese. I must admit. I had not heard of it, but the moment she saw it's image pop on screen it'd been decided. Nothing I could've said, no other proposition was going to change her mind. She simply said they make the best grilled sandwich in the world, and with that, the die had been cast.
There was only one location. It was 16 miles away. A little bit far for a Friday night after a long week of arduous work and with the TV already on set on Netflix. But nothing would stop her. We drove the 16 miles under some light rain. It was already 10:30pm. The parties in Wilton Manors were in full swing as we marched in our pajamas into New York Grilled Sandwich like zombies in search of brain. What we had as soon as it touched our lips woke us up and immediately reminded us of the celebration at hand, and the parties outside, and most of all, reminded us to wake up to enjoy the moment.
The grilled sandwiches were delicious. They were an assault of taste and flavors which engulfed the tastebuds in a never-ending dance. We also ordered the Truffle Cheese Fries, to get started, along with wine and a Purple Haze beer. The stars of the night were the Brooklyn Porkster and the Meat Packing District. Both amazing. But the center piece - their pièce de résistance - was the soup. That delicious Tomato Basil Bisque they add to every order is to die for.
To close the night we also had their New York Minute Pumpkin Sweet Bake to go along with the season.
Now, I too know why she was so immediately hell bent on NGC. It was a perfect choice. There was no contention, no double thought, and no hesitation. It was a momentous this is it, this is the best, and we're going.
So, don't think about it. This place's food will change your day, or night for that matter. It'll remind you of the best things in life. In the least, in all honesty, it'll change your grilled sandwich experience- forever.
