I've been practicing Pilates for over ten years and have worked either in 1-1 or group reformer / cadillac / mat formats. I seldom write reviews but wanted to share, publicly, the issues with this franchise. I bought an annual membership and have gone roughly 75 times to all the studios in the area.
Firstly, NYP runs their series of "Abs, Arms, Ass" to attract the more gullible, Tik-Tok crazed, and influencer-akin population of women, selling an idea versus giving newcomers the experience that exemplifies the true virtue of pilates (contemporary or classical), which is contrology (return to life). Joseph Pilates' teaching is about alignment, strength, body mechanics, posture, correct breathing, flexibility, and ultimately, a lifelong practice that can be as useful as replacing physical therapy. It becomes a friend to you at whatever the level/age.
Secondly, you can make it fun and super hard to fit in with the times (which is understandable), but the reformer machine is not a contraption that is SAFE for 1 instructor who was barely certified by any reputable professional pilates consortium, yelling under dim lights over CLUB music, for a new beginner to follow.. She or he who barely understands the difference between femur vs. joint socket. There are roughly THIRTY machines in each class at the studio in Flatiron - how do you teach over 30 people who can't control their own bodies in the correct format?
Thirdly, hands on correction without proper apprenticeship (it roughly takes 2 years and multiple certifications elsewhere) was highly concerning. I took a class with a guy called Matt and I won't forget how he asked me to overextend my side plank that was super dangerous. I looked up his specs and of course, trained by NYP which is not associated with any consortium or school. They train people in 3-6 months!
Besides Sarah and Megan Meyers, the instructors here create an environment of unsafe practices. And to be honest, the front room girls / guys judges you and worst yet, they renew your membership (even if it is $2500) without telling you and then sends you a text, hey! the card didn't get through for your membership, is this a mistake?
Avoid at all costs.
