The Best Restaurants in Newark, New Jersey | Eater NY

"In American Pastoral, Philip Roth wrote of how Newark’s water was a draw to certain industries, including brewing, and the immigrants who powered them. At the beginning of Prohibition, Newark housed 28 breweries. In 2021, Steve Hughes, wanting to be a direct line to that beer history, opened this spacious yet inviting place, the first craft brewery in the city since that golden era, with a revolving assortment of 15 beers on tap. It’s also a short walk from the Newark Performing Arts Center and Newark Museum." - Hank Zona

Google
Fantastic beer, phenomenal staff (if I may say myself), and an all over amazing community. This place is the Cheers of Newark and definitely worth the visit. For the summer heat, I recommend Orange Crush. A crushable wheat beer and only 4%.

First time here, some friends suggested this brewery so we decided to try it. There isn't any street parking so we parked in the garage behind the brewery(i would not recommend) Once we parked we walked around to get to the brewery. Very spacious, they have a nice set up, plenty of games. Nice staff, good beer. I would recommend.

Google
Great beer selection, would recommend the sidecar or the easy rider! Had a good time and would visit again 🙂

Every beer I've had here is fantastic. They are all really balanced and have great flavor without being too overpowering. My favorites are the Yakima IPA and the Octoberfest.

Great beer Mellow place to sit, see a game and just relax

Really great variety of beers and all well done. Not overpowered on hops which allows the precision they use in brewing to show through. 100% recommend.

I've been following this brewery for months on social media waiting for them to open. So finally I was able to go in it wasn't bad I had an Ironbound extra pale ale which was pretty good. The design of the place is minimalist you can see where they make the beer. As of right now they aren't canning it so you're only choices is to drink it there or get a growler. Hopefully pretty soon they start canning. If you're in Newark you should go check them out

Garage paid parking in the street behind the establishment. Plenty of seating. AC is VERY weak to none and running with limited fans likely to save as the interior is spacious. Only one bar tender attending to the customers which makes it difficult to get quick service but if you're not in any hurry this is fine. I almost felt as if I was disturbing the bartender's conversation with another customer while I was waiting to order my drink. The beer selection is good. They have a flight of 4 drinks for $12 and drafts are generally about $8. Very casual atmosphere and a decent hang out space. There is no food as is in most brewery places in NJ. Not sure if you can bring your own food as I didn't ask but it seems very casual that you probably can so you can drink away.

Yelp
We stopped in the other night to try their beers and it was packed with a bunch of college kids acting wild. lol I mean, hey that's cool but that's not a real brewery vibe. That's a bar vibe and that's not for me tbh. I liked this place in general with the exception of that. The beers we ordered were good but the server had a problem hearing us due to the loud music plus the servers on the night we went didn't go out of their way to smile or welcome us when we sat down on the stools. It took both of them a good five minutes to acknowledge us. I was honestly about to leave considering they both walked past us three times and didn't say a word. We ordered: Sidecar IPA 8/10 Weekender Seltzer Pink Lemonade 7/10 I'd like this place if a DJ wasn't blasting music and the people weren't frolicking around like wild animals that were just let out of their cages for the first time. I'd say do all of that bs after 10 pm, not at 8 pm on a Thursday. I wanted to come here and talk and enjoy my beers but that didn't happen. I probably won't be back, but good luck.

Yelp
Came here on Friday for beer bingo sponsored by Audible and it was cool. I really wish NB would partner with food trucks for food. I would also like to see s larger selection of more beers.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick beer and definitely enjoyed it. Cool spot with a lot of really striking artwork. My only complaint is not a lot of seating. I would stop in again.

Yelp
Great location right on Broad St. IDT Parking garage behind it on Atlantic Ave and the light-rail goes right past the front door. Cool, friendly beer-tenders. Nice selection of various styles of beer. They also had a flavored alcoholic seltzer (mango-strawberry) the night I went. Prices are what most craft breweries are getting. MY favorite was the Trainwreck NEIPA. The Ironbound extra pale ale was good as was the Oak Island porter ( here with nitrous gas added which adds a smoothness to a beer. Tasting room was big enough with plenty of nooks with chairs, ledges or tales to drink or bring food in. A large separate room had a ping pong table with corn-hole games. I also liked the wall art that was for sale hanging around the place. Great place to stop before an event at the Prudential Center too

Yelp
Such a cool space. Huge and warehouse-like with board games, foosball, and ping pong tables. A few regular tables and couches, too. It's casual and welcoming, good for groups, couples, or on your own. They don't sell food, but you can bring in your own. What matters most? The beer. I had a flight of the good stuff. If you're into darker beer, I recommend the oak island porter, which has nice chocolate notes and goes down smooth. The lite rail kolsch was another standout, very clean and crisp. They have tons of ipas on the menu, too, so you can't go wrong there. The bottom line is this is such a unique spot for the area, a great gathering place or just a nice place to go solo if you want a casual spot to work, read, or hangout.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere and even better robust selection of beers. Local love to Newark for sure! The bartender was extra warm and accommodating and the space is really good for meet ups and events. Come through!

Yelp
Newark really needed a nice, new brewery, where people could hang out in a chill, relaxed environment. It is right in the downtown area, near the Newark Museum. Their beers are fun and approachable. They have a relatively large formerly industrial space where people can relax off on their own or sit at the bar and socialize. I found the people there to be very down-to-earth and friendly. Everyone asked me to come back soon.

Yelp
Stopped in here last night and beer was delicious. Bartender was wonderful and place is super cool. Definitely will be back! What a great spot!

Yelp
Stumbled into this new brewery (open nov 2021), and so happy i did. a pretty descent selection of beer - you got your classics, but then theres a sour and porter which made me happy. great staff & owners. super friendly and down to earth. what impressed me about this place was the actual size. its huge, very laid back, and welcoming. they even have a game room! plenty of couches and areas to chill in. something that caught my eye was a board/wall that had local food places listed. i thought that was great that they are supporting local food spots that you can order from and get delivered or picked up. only thing is parking, we were lucky to get a spot on the street, but i can see how this can be an issue. might be easier for pulic transportation since there is the path, train station, light rail and buses around. cant wait to come back & bring my friends here!

Yelp
This is a nice spot for a beer. I returned to Newark Local Beer after visiting it during a Yelp event. The beer is really good here, especially the India pale ale IPA and the lager. The atmosphere is very relaxed with a few people sitting around enjoying conversation and sipping beer. Definitely a nice spot for a beer.

Yelp
The Oak Island porter beer tastes so good! I visited the brewery and wanted to carry out cans to-go but unfortunately the porter could not be canned because it's on nitro not tap.

Yelp
Super cool brewery right in downtown Newark! Came by with some friends for some beers and board games. I drank their sour ("Switch Failure") beer and it was really tasty! It was tart and fruity and everything I love in a sour. You also have the option to taste the beer before buying, but you could also do a flight to try out several beers. The brewery is really spacious, and has some board games, a foosball table, table tennis, and a huge projector to watch tv on the wall. All in all, this is a really cool spot in Newark, and I am very excited to come back and try more of their beers and enjoy the good vibes!

Yelp
If you're a fan of craft beer, you gotta try Newark Local Beer! The atmosphere was lively and the selection of beers was impressive. Attended a Yelp event yesterday and what a vibe it was! The vendors were knowledgeable and friendly, and the food options were delicious. The event was well-organized and easy to navigate.

Yelp
The beer is truly exceptional. If you love beer, you'll love Newark Local Beer. It's a great little brewery! The space is bright, open, and very clean... it's perfect for different types of events or just to enjoy good beer. There's ample garage parking behind the brewery. We found a nice cut-through and were a short walk to our car... Quality abounds in Newark!

Yelp
Highly recommend for a great vibe, music and fun scene. Def check out their trivia night! Our bartender, Chris, took good care of my large crew and was super cool.

Yelp
Great selection of beer- the ppl really know what they're doing there. Huge space with lots of room for larger crowds. Board games, card games, ping pong, cornhole, big screen tvs. Short walk from many nearby hot spots like NJPAC. Really friendly crew working the place. Beer I would definitely go back for.

Alex M.

Yelp
There are so few places in downtown Newark to grab a good craft brew so this was a welcome surprise. Service was friendly and generally knowledgeable. Prices are what you would expect from a local brewery, usually $7 a pint.

James C.

Yelp
I had a Craft Beer event recently, which included some Newark Local beers. They held their own against what I consider to be some of the best beers in the country. Give them a try.

Yelp
Get your lunch to go at one of the local restaurants and head on over for a Micro Brew to complement your meal. The place is very clean and has plenty of room for you and your lunch. I tried the "Freight Train" and was very impressed. They also have Seltzer "Weekender" on tap. You won't be disappointed.
