Jersey City’s Automat Kitchen Serves Comfort Food From Little Windows - Eater NY

"The concept has been intermittently revived, most recently in Jersey City among the office buildings and shopping malls of Newport. Called Automat Kitchen, the restaurant is a sliver of a space, with windows looking out onto the street, a scatter of tables inside, and a few places to sit in the courtyard out front. The center of attention is an anteroom where 20 windows, much larger than those at the original Horn & Hardart, are arrayed in two rows. It serves, in a manner not quite matching that of the city’s original automats, commonplaces like chicken parm sandwiches, chef salads, and bowls of oatmeal — a genre that the website describes as “comfort classics reinvented.”" - Robert Sietsema

Yelp
Always been a big fan of this mall, but with the recent renovation it has gone to the next level! It's pretty cool that they added a pedestrian bridge, that way you don't have to cross a busy street and the path tracks. I especially love the upgrades to the food court and movie theater. There are so many new and old shops to choose from, all reasonably priced, and very close to the food and hotels. Can't wait for my next visit!

Yelp
We only came here for the cheesecake factory that is clean and don't have sticky floors. The parking for 2 hours will cost you $10. It says that parking is $9 and there is no way you can pay for parking unless you have a smart phone. They charge you a $1.90 for a convenience fee. What a rip off. You're in NJ, you can find another man within 5 minutes of driving.

Yelp
While the Sears is finally gone, a Primark is coming, and the rest of the mall is still quite lively, with a Uniqlo, Hollisters, a bunch of new shops and jewelry places, some new restaurants, and overall has survived well despite the malls slowly losing major tenants.

Yelp
My favorite mall since I was a child. Has a lot of stores quite a varied mall with various stores. Food court is varied as well.

Yelp
It's a decent mall near the light rail and the path and mini stores to pick from if you're living nearby and there's no other major options other than going to Grove Street. You can find many things here, but there are no stores with office supplies, which I learned the hard way when I had to go buy a mouse, and couldn't find any stores here. If you're looking for shoes and a nail salon, all in one place is your place.

Yelp
This is a decent mall with 3 floors. The first two floors are shops with some restaurants scattered while the third floor has a food court with an AMC. The mall is reasonably well maintained and clean. We frequently go here since we have AMC A-list to watch movies and it's conveniently close. Also, if you're using the PATH, the mall is conveniently across the street. The restaurant selection is OK with the usual fast food offerings in the dining pavilion, cheesecake factory, Kura sushi, Meet Fresh, Panera bread, and so on. Most bases are covered but there isn't any particular standout food venue. Kura sushi is probably the best but it is still a bit overpriced and not the best sushi option. In terms of shops, I don't usually do much in-person shopping but there seemed to be a reasonably good amount of options. There is a decent amount of security at this mall so hopefully they are able to keep the peace and keep everyone safe.

Yelp
It's a decent place to go but nothing all that fancy , after Covid their stores started opening later and the vibe in the mall is not the same , but being that is the only mall in the area I guess we don't have much of a choice , store selection is basic .. to the point I'm starting to simply buy my stuff online .

Yelp
Newport Centre is a good mall. It is what I would call a middle class mall with stores like Macy's, Uniqlo, Aeropostale and Zara. The food court has the usual fast food options (Panda Express, Chick-Fil-A, Popeyes, etc.) If you want a nicer dining experience, there is a Cheesecake Factory too. The best feature of this mall is the AMC movie theater on the top floor. There are not many movie theaters in this area so it's definitely a useful offering to have around.

Yelp
First time coming to this mall loved it open spaces. Busy but doesn't feel crowded. Really enjoyed my first time stopping by this mall.

Yelp
Did a little shopping and now I'm about to relax and let this massage chair take me to heaven.

Yelp
I haven't been here for years. Came here for the first time again in maybe a decade. There is a parking lot right by the mall but you need to pay (on weekends, it's $3 for 2 hours. It's not the payment that bother me, it's the security of the lot. As we drove into the lot looking for a spot, we saw a parked Tesla without wheels! The car was propped up and raised up by 4 metal props and all the wheels were gone!

Yelp
When I moved into New Jersey back in '89, this was my first mall I visited with friends. I was at the mall last week with my partner in 8 years. The mall seemed different, brighter and nicer than I remember it. Anchored by Macy's, Kohls, JC Penney and a Sears, the mall is large, with two stories of shops and a third, top floor of eateries. The food court on the third floor has a wonderful selection of fast food places. It was nice to see this mall again as one can get here by car, light rail or the PATH train only a few minutes away.

Yelp
Newport Centre is convenient, but that's about where the good things about it end. If you plan on visiting, make sure you go on a weekday vs a weekend for a better experience! I live very close to Newport and if I don't want to have to go into the city for something, I'll usually try and check here first. Their store selection is limited at best, Express, Zara, and Windsor are my go to's. They do have Macys which is good for a wild variety of items but fair warning, this store is typically messy and hard to find an associate in. One glowing review I have for this mall is for the upper floor food court and cinema. They have a ton of different food choices if you're looking for a quick snack and seeing a movie in the theater is more than enjoyable. I love the reclining seats! Also a big fan that the mall has a light rail stop. If you're in a crunch, Newport will probably be able to provide what you need if you're okay with dealing with unorganized stores and throngs of little kids running around. If not, head into the city for nicer options!

John S.

Yelp
Pros- they finally have a Starbucks and Uniqlo Cons- Dangerous. Just got heckled/berated by a desperate beggar in the food court. Had to call security to escort him out the vicinity. Parking fee machines rarely work. Tips- some people park in shoprite/luxury apartment areas/target parking lot as they're all free and they can just mosey to the mall, lol

Yelp
As a born and raised JC girl, Newport Mall has always been the place to go for everything. I worked there, I shopped there u name it. It's kinda a part of my childhood. Good variety of shops and restaurants with new businesses added recently. It's def become more high end over the years with additions like Micheal Kors and Coach but the old school feel of this mall I don't feel will ever change. My only issue that angers me to no end is the fact u have to pay for parking and the rates go up at the drop of a hat! Unacceptable. The ticket machines barely work and it's hard to get an attendant. Don't spend more that 3 hours or

Yelp
The macys bathroom needs attention on the 5 floor in the ladies' section. It's extremely filty.

Yelp
It's been a long time since I step foot in this mall. It's much cleaner than when I was last here and seems to be good stores but a lot of the stores close pretty early. I was there about 6:45 and a lot of stores were already closed or getting ready to close.

Yelp
Okayyy not much to say but come here ! You don't really have to pay to park inside just walk. OMG there is a store called journey and there's good crocs, winter clothes, Book bags, etc.., the workers there are so nice and welcoming like broooo I swear ! And they have boba and a theater. 4 floors, the best, the value and stufff is worth it because the design is nice. !- and the worker theee was so pretty like omg yo. I came to the theater like monthsss years ago and I came here with my 6 cousins in all was 12 including my family ! I think there was more but we were getting looks and stares it's a really big place and macys especially to buy stuff like swimming clothes with ur family members! So, the best stores, are: Journeys (first floor, they have charms for crocs and book bags including winter crocs / clothes) Boba (3rd floor, their are nice but not really Idk how to Explain it and the medium sizes are like small...) McDonald's (first floor, right whe Ty enter it's on the left and I went there 4 years ago ish with my family and we bought food. Ur able to watch the beautiful view lol) Macys (3-4th floor, cool stuff especially perfume bro beg a pack and u would faint with perfume it's sooo good with sales, and clothes Bur don't steal bc this guy stole and got arrested right infront of everyone and the police's were chasing him or stuff) Coming to an end, have a good day!

Yelp
Least favorite Jersey Mall I have ever shopped at. Longtime history of fights, stabbings, shoot outs, car theft and now poor covid precautions. There is a decent (if that) selection of stores to shop for men that include Macys, HM, Zara, G star and a couple more. I usually do not expect much help from the employees staffed at these stores. This is my first visit since the covid era. Signs for all covid precautions are visible but not much enforcement. I ran into a couple of mall hand sanitzer stations that looked dirty and were empty. Several visitors were not wearing their masks properly. I walked out of 2 different shoe stores because employee's were unmasked. Social distancing is not enforced with gatherings of people stagnant and blocking walk ways. I did not see any mall employees sanitizing the common areas or frequently touched hardware such as door handles or escalators. Jersey City residents (with id proof of residency) were previously able to get their parking tickets validated for a discount rate but they have currently made it so difficult to obtain this convenience. The usual mall customer service station is closed with a big sign that says "Guest services has relocated to the management office" (located on another wing of the mall) but when I went to the management office and stood in line for 15 minutes the woman behind the glass window pointed and told me there was a piece of paper (along with many other pieces of paper) taped to a door stating that you must go to the "west garage" then go to "Aisle A3" to get a validation. I did a mini cardio workout just to get a parking ticket validated. I would have more respect for their game if they just canceled the resident validation. This inconvenience was just a huge shady hassle. Typical of this mall! Will I return, probably when I need a quick emergency outfit and I am on a time restraint but I would not recommend.

Yelp
It is an indoor mall that was conveniently located around the corner from our hotel. Since our hotel did not provide shower gel, this mall was home to a Bath & Body Works, where I was able to quickly get in and out and purchase exactly what I needed. Believe me when I tell you there were many people in the lobby of the hotel carrying their blue and white bags and I knew there was one of their stores located in the mall. Was it anything special? Not really. Any unique, cute, little shops? No. Just the basics. Will it work in a pinch? Absolutely.

Jacqueline N.

Yelp
They can use more stores in the mall. I love the fact Uniqlo Store (if I spelled correctly) I shopped there for many years. I hope it is here to stay.
google avatar

Andie B.

Yelp
I have been to this mall quite a few times and it's been an enjoyable experience for the most part. A few times, there have been a few inconsiderate people i.e. those that walk into you or take up the entire walkway. However, the mall is spacious and has tons of different stores. The majority of the stores are clean and organized. I like that they have a Cheesecake Factory, CVS, and a nail salon here. This place is heaven for anyone who likes to shop.
google avatar

Yelp
Ah....can't believe I have not put in a review for this mall yet. This was THE MALL back in the early 90's in Jersey City. I remembered coming here all the time with bunch of my high school friends to either catch a movie, shop around, or just a hang out place for kids. Yep, we all go through this stage and Newport Mall was my "go to" spot. With that said, this mall has changed a lot over the years with the store and shops/stands opening and closing. They have also renovated several times throughout the years just to maintain the wear and tear and tried to make Newport Mall to look more modern. The mission is accomplished. The stores, however, has changed. Yes, there's some high end stores but many more teen shopping stores...a phase that adults like myself are no longer interested but hey, I guess there's something for everyone and for every budget, right. The only that never changed since this simon mall had opened is the paid parking lot and it's ever increasing price to park. Regardless of your purchasing of any goods/services at this mall, you'd still have to pay to park here.

Yelp
Many, many moons ago, Newport Mall was the spot to hang out. My friends and I would go after high school to aimlessly wander around, get full on free samples in the food court (chicken teriyaki!), and watch movies in the movie theater (2 for 1 special anyone??). But fast forward a couple of decades and the mall has largely lost its appeal. For starters, the quality of stores had stagnated and even regressed. Sears is a shell of what it once was. JC Penney is a pseudo Target with higher prices. Only Macy's and Kohls seem to have their acts together. However, for the privilege of visiting these glamorous stores, you're looking at a minimum $3 parking charge in the adjacent garage. And if you're there for more than a couple of hours, the rates quickly skyrocket. They offer a dollar off parking for Jersey City residents, but whereas before you were able to validate your parking ticket in the main level of the mall, you are now forced to drive to the farthest corner of the parking garage to search for a tiny office in order to validate. Feels more like a side quest for a video game and likely will dissuade many people from validating their parking. Newport will always have a special place in my heart, but for movies (assuming I ever go back post covid) I'd stick to Secaucus. For mall shopping I'd recommend either Garden state plaza or Jersey Gardens. Pros: food court - chicken teriyaki, panda express, Popeyes, chick fil a! Cons: the concept of having to pay for the privilege to spend additional money while shopping is something that bothers me to my core.

Yelp
A plus to getting to this location is the Path Train access. You can take the Path directly to this stop. If you drive here, they do have a parking lot at an additional fee. Comparing this mall to what it looked like a few years ago, the update indoors is great. There's escalators and elevators located within to get from floor to floor. You can find a variety of stores such as Victoria secret and footlocker etc. Love that they finally have a Macy's! For those that like to enjoy a whole day at the mall, you can stop to the third floor food court. Here you'll find mainly chain foods such at the Melt Shop and Panera. On this floor you'll also find a movie theater. Enjoy!

Joe M.

Yelp
I could only find one bathroom, which was located on the third floor. People were waiting in line to use them and they were disgusting.

Yelp
I am a local to the area so i have been going to this mall since i was a little child with my parents. Remember in high school when going to the mall was a hangout spot? Yup, i was there. It was amazing to see the transformation of Newport Mall while growing up as new stores and new remodeling comes in. I feel like Newport Mall is the perfect size and has all the stores i need. When i am in a rush or looking for something specific this is the place to go. It has all my favorite stores like Zara, Call it Spring, Forever 21, Sephora, and H&M. You do have to pay for parking which i really don't like that but if you don't want to pay for parking, It is just walking distant from the light rail and there's busses that leaves you right in front. The food court has a lot of varieties of things and there's also a movie theater up there.

john g.

Yelp
This place charges for parking. If I could leave zero stars I would. Charges $9 for 2 hours of parking. Anything over 2 hours is $20, and restaurants don't validate. Paid 20 dollars to have dinner at Cheescake Factory. Will not be going back unless I am forced to. This is ridiculous.
google avatar

Brittany P.

Yelp
can someone explain why they're so adamant about people paying for parking @ the kiosk where you walk to enter and exit the garage when you're able to pay as you're driving out of the garage ? with covid - the machines are the garage walkways should not be in use ! large crowd were forming around them. people sitting on the stairs, not wearing masks. you had to weave closely through people to enter or exit the garage. come on. get with it also - NO ONE IS WEARING MASKS. i won't waste my time uploading the 20 photos taken during my half hour trip today.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
They need to enforce the mask regulation. Especially among the vendors. It's hard to feel comfortable about shopping there. I saw people with no mask on at all walking around.
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
If you do happen to visit this mall with toddlers or kids , Watch Out! The kids "play area" is tiny and a hazard. The play area is nothing but two platforms on either side of the aisle holding a few car ride ons. What makes this hazardous is the way it has been designed. The platform is elevated and sharp on the edges and inconspicuous. The rise in platform is just not evident. I have seen kids trip on it on multiple occasions and get hurt. I have emailed the mall authorities about the same as well. Would appreciate if other parents reading this review also report the same so that the appropriate action is taken.
google avatar

Jordan M.

Yelp
Went to pick up an order I placed at Adidas. I found the mall very busy, with not a lot of social distancing happening. It was my first time inside the mall, and I have not been before the pandemic, but I don't see myself returning any time soon. I was able to find an information board as soon as I walked in and found which shop I wanted to go to immediately, which was a nice bonus. Looking forward to the pandemic calming down, and then will hopefully be able to return and not feel so nervous about the large crowds of people!
google avatar

Esmeralda C.

Yelp
I usually visit this mall a few times a year only, as it can get overly crowded during the weekend and that is when I've frequented. The last two times I visited I noticed they opened a new eatery and have changed the entrance for the light rail riders from where it used to be. It is the closest mall from where I live with a good amount of familiar stores and the food court is the upper level is not too shabby either as they've changed a few of the vendors throughout the years. There is also an AMC movie theater located on the top floor which is convenient if you're suddenly in the mood to watch a flick after you've shopped till you dropped and stuffed your face with fast food lol. Overall is a convenient place to get to by car, bus, light rail and PATH trains.
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
There aren't too many indoor malls in the New York City area, one of them is Newport Centre in Jersey City and is basically right opposite Newport PATH and tram stations which provide access into Manhatten (World Trade Centre) in around ten minutes. I found the layout of the mall again to be really confusing to the point even the mall staff didn't know where certain stores or even the toilets were - the toilets weren't clean and they didn't have a disabled toilet either! It is over multiple floors with an AMC Cinema near the food court on the highest level (toilets are here too!), so only having one lift again is pretty poor. Even getting inside the mall can be difficult as the main enterance of the mall was blocked off by construction, awkwardly forcing me to go in through Macy's. There are a few department stores including JCPenney's, Macy's as well as huge brands Starbucks (a good location for a mall) and McDonald's but from store selection to layout and many other aspects of the centre just didn't impress me at all, it wasn't even worth the trip out from the city! 1*
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
A mall that's definitely stuck in the early 90s with a few stores and overall feels like it's ready to shut down, it has a few food options and is located next to the PATH station. I just wish they had more shopping options overall but you can beat the convenience, but it's hit or miss depending on what you're looking for.
google avatar

Rose L.

Yelp
Wish I could put zero stars. Went to the run down movie theater then couldn't get out of the parking lot. Finally reached security on the phone and we were told to break the gate to get out. What a disaster!!!
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
I mean... this just isn't a good mall. Poor layout, small selection of low quality stores, only one sit down restaurant, no free parking... the list goes on and on. Newport's only redeeming quality is their food court. Although their selection of stores are wack, for some reason they've really got it going on in the food department. This is probably the largest mall food court that I've ever seen and there are at least 20 different kiosks. The anchor stores are Macys, JC Penny and Kohls and none really have great selection. I really wish that there were some better department stores here. Downtown Jersey City is being built up at a rapid pace, and I think that the Newport Mall needs to stay in line with some of those changes. It'd be nice for this mall to have a major facelift, and I'd love to see some new stores added that are similar to most other large malls in North Jersey. For now I'll just have to continue venturing into NYC or hopping in the car and heading up north when I want to shop.
google avatar

Jeannette L.

Yelp
Newport Mall has improved tremendously over the years. Fifteen years ago, my friend used to call it "the sad mall." It's not so sad anymore. Granted, it's not Westfield Garden State Plaza or the Mall at Short Hills, but it's got some good stores, a decent AMC movie theater, and not-too-shabby food options. During the work week, office workers will go to the food court for lunch. The mall is also conveniently located near both the Light Rail Station and the Pavonia PATH. If you drive there, there is a paid parking deck available. The Sephora and Lush are nice. I also like the Panera Bread for lunch.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
I only come to this mall as a last resort when I'm in the area and there's something I need to get or if I need to waste some time before doing something else. First of all this is the first mall in NJ that I've ever been to that you pay to park at... not that much of anything in this mall is worth me paying to come and shop at. The stores here are kind of disappointing. Another disappointment here is the dining options. Besides the food court the only full service restaurant is Cheesecake Factory and if you want to push it Johnny Rockets has table service. Also very limited public restrooms. I believe the only one they have is upstairs near the movies unless you go into one of the department stores. So many other better malls in NJ to choose from that have so much more to offer and a much better shopping experience. I personally prefer Bridgewater Commons Mall if you want to try somewhere new.
google avatar

Vicente C.

Yelp
The worst part is the parking! This Mall was a dump about 17 years ago. Forward to 2019 the stores have improved. For those that criticize about a Kohl's or a JC Penney really shouldn't be shopping here. Transplants with that posh and privileged mentality are a detriment to society. This is an urban mall built during a time when jersey city was one of the worst cities in America and no developer would touch this place. Now that New York is super expensive to live in, people have been flocking to Hudson county. Please visit another mall and quit acting pretentious on here, it's yelp for crying out loud! Anyway, back to my review. This mall has come a long way from the payhalf and Wilson's leather days. The food court has improved with chick fil a and a couple of other places and it was redone a couple of years ago, The AMC cinema was also renovated with state of the art audio and reserved reclining seats. Please visit the mall and enjoy.

Yelp
Newport has grown significantly since I was a little girl. I've never really had a bad experience at this mall besides for a couple of times during the holiday season when everyone is on edge trying to get all their shopping done. For the most part you can find everything you need in one visit here by searching through the many many stores here. They also have some great new eateries such as The Cheesecake Factory, Zinburger and Panera to name only a few that are on the first floor. If these restaurants aren't any of your favorites that have a newly designed food court with many big name stations to eat at. I've have never seen this mall dirty and the stores have been very well picked up themselves. The only con I will say is that most malls in jersey have free parking while Newport has a paid parking lot for its visitors. But if you are a jersey city resident you may stop by the customer service desk on the first floor to get a dollar discount. You can't go wrong by coming to Newport!
google avatar

Bhavnit K.

Yelp
This is my go to mall, I usually come here every other weekend for food and just to roam around. Parking is huge but gets busy on weekends. I like the stores on upper level, they are big and looks more clean. I specially like the Express store. Evertime I go it has new collection. Godiva is at the perfect location, it always catches me (:D). There is a burger joint, Zinburger and Cheesecake Factory in front of it which are perfect for any meeting, occasion or event. Restrooms are very clean and cleaning staff always make sure that there is someone inside in case someone needs help. Food court - lot of options, chick fila, taco bell, burger king, popeyes, Authentic Indian, Hummus grill, sarku japan, panda, poke & ramen. Melt shop is also opened up here few months back.
google avatar

Krissy H.

Yelp
parking is ridiculous! it just went up again! $5 for upto 2 hours! $10 upto 3 hours!!! $14 upto 4 hours then it goes upto $24!!! if you spent 4.5 hours you'll be charged $24!!! I am never coming back here again!!!
google avatar

Jackson H.

Yelp
I have been going to this mall for years and it is great it has everything you could get i'm sure paying for parking is annoying but overall it is great! remember how malls used to look I'm sure Newport center was so much different when it opened in 1987 this place has everything you could need I'm sure malls back then when people were little looked so much different!
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
Newport Centre is a "Simon" branded mall, so they have the Simon wifi signal available. This is useful as there are a few spots in the shopping center that are "dead" spots as far as my 4G signal goes. The mall has all the usual retail outlets that you might expect and the regular anchor stores. Nothing special there. Super huge food court here with at least a dozen different choices. Indian, sushi, Subway, burgers, pizza, chicken, Chinese and more. There are TV's tuned to a music video channel for entertainment. Bonus: It's right across from the Newport PATH station and it also straddles the Bergen Light Rail with a station here.

Honest R.

Yelp
I have been going here for already one decade and hopefully the next I have ate with family at the food court and have memories that I find here I know how the mall has changed and seen all the struggle of the pandemic and how it survived and thrived. This mall provides a lot of services such as clothing for good prices in the right store brand clothing is you want that multiple sneaker stores brand stores in trend stores jewelry stores iconic brands they have a lot of things you will fall in love with based on your interests
google avatar

Damian D.

Yelp
They charge you to park at this dump? Crappy stores. The only plus is that you pay 1/2 the sales tax.
google avatar

Patty B.

Yelp
I'm really not a fan of this mall. I heard a lot of good things about Newport so I was super excited to visit. I used to frequent Garden State Plaza, so I thought that this mall would be similar, but unfortunately this mall is very underwhelming. It looks big because of the design but it's actually small and it looks very outdated. The selection of stores is also pretty bad. If I was coming from the city, I would definitely make the trip to Garden State instead, because although this mall is closer to the city, it's just not worth it. There's a Popeyes in the food court and a Panera on the lower level so that's cool I guess Also, there's a movie theater so that's good too! But yeah, I probably won't ever come back to this mall if I can help it
google avatar

K R.

Yelp
Low end mall. Jersey city residents have to drive to short hills for nice department stores. A couple department store here are JC penny, Kohls.... Really? Why not add a Bloomingdales or Neiman Marcus?? The mall would make a killing. They do not cater to downtown Jersey City resident. The food court is dangerous, people get into fights and recently someone was shot. Parking is a huge pain in the neck. You have to take a ticket then stand in line to pay at a machine that never works for credit card payment. Bring cash! Horrible parking system and no valet. Overall this mall is not keeping up with the changing demographic in Jersey City and is disappointing for people that move here hoping to find a good and convenient shopping experience. And by the way it's not pretentious to want a safe and decent shopping mall when you live in a city with apartments that cost up to $1,000 a square foot. Jersey city isn't a dump anymore, so the people paying a huge burden or tax should be able to shop in the town they live in- and not get shot at in the process by thugs.
