I happened to be in town for the weekend and learned about the Rotary Club's Charity Polo Match. I have been to polo matches in the past, but never in Newport. It was a great excuse for the ladies to put on a cute dress, wear a big hat, and enjoy ourselves. My group of friends all were in agreement that the polo match would be something they would enjoy. Not only was the match for charity, but it was the first match of the season.
We all were going to dinner in downtown Newport post the game and uber'd to the grounds instead of driving ourselves, but I wish we did. I was slightly bummed that we did not plan accordingly to bring our own food, beverage, and chairs to the event. But it was a learning experience!
We did not remain parched for too long and were able to purchase drinks from the bar that was setup. There were three or four specialty drink offerings for the event, wine, and sangrias that could be purchased. The most popular drink that was on the menu was the "Divot Stomp" , which was a bourbon based drink topped off with champagne. Let me tell you, they were delicious! Others in the group opted for either wine, tequila sodas, or vodka sodas. The bar was well equipped and ready for the event. There was so food being sold at the match at that time. I am unsure if later in the season food for sale is an option.
The venue's offered seating varied and was on the minimal side. A piece of advice, bring your own chairs if possible. There were a number of high-top tables with chairs, along with a pavilion of sorts with additional tables and chairs.
The match itself was action packed and kept us engaged the entire match. My favorite part of the match is the tradition of divot stomping during half-time. Just the experience of walking around the field in search of divots to stomp is so much fun.
I highly recommend going to a match whether you are local or come from afar. Grab your chairs, pack a cooler, and head to a match. You will not be disappointed and will be in for a great time.
