Newsome Harlow

I loved my visit to the Newsome Harlow tasting room! The staff was warm, welcoming, and super knowledgeable about the wines. Everything I tried was delicious, but the Malbec was the standout for me. Highly recommend stopping in! 🍷✨

Wonderful wines! I was impressed by everything that was poured and the tasting room manager was so great. Would visit again! Loved the zinfandels.

This is my favorite in Murphys! The owner and staff are always friendly and knowledgeable. The wine is amazingly good. I visit a few times a year and always look forward to Newsome Harlow.

We had a party of 18 ppl and we called last minute to see if they could accommodate us and they happily did so. We had such a great time and the wines were very nice. Nick was our server and he was very knowledgeable about the wines as well as funny; he gave us a good time. The atmosphere was also very clean, modern, and beautiful which made it even more enjoyable. Plus it was a chilly day but their patio heaters along with the wine kept us nice and warm.

I'm not usually a wine drinker, but our host Tracy did a great job guiding me through the tasting. I found the collection of wines quite enjoyable, and I learned a lot in the process. Service was amazing, and patio seating is always a plus in my book!

I have enjoyed their wines since 2010. Love their wines. Scott and Barbara are friendly and helpful to everyone. They have a great tasting room . But the wines, big zin. Best I know and great every time.

Fantastic place for wine tasting! Ask for Sidney - very knowledgeable and helpful. Patio has a fantastic feel, very Austin-like IMO. Enjoyed the petite sirah and the Big John Zin.

Just did a tasting with Nick. Probably the best tasting I've ever experienced. He's very knowledgeable about the wines and was so funny and he made us feel at home. We ended up joining. Looking forward to being a member!

BEWARE! Service was great during the wine tasting, but they charged me an extra bottle at check out. While questioning the high fee (multiple times!), they were persistent that the charge was correct and didn't bother to check what they were charging me for. They asked if I wanted a detailed receipt. After receiving the emailed receipt, I saw I was charged for a third bottle of wine, when I was only packaged and only asked for two. When I went back, they said they don't know how to do single bottle refunds. Be careful!!

The 2023 Rose was delicious. Nick gave us a taste as it was not included in the tasting. Nick was the one-person-show this trip. The Derailed was delicious again, so I bought 2 Rose's and 1 derailed. It was lovely being back here again. It's my favorite place in Murphy. Thanks for another great time. See you next year!

Nick is the bomb! Made us feel like we were the only ones there ..which we were... he was great! Wines were good too.

The Tasting room is underground, easy to find off main street. The natural rock walls make it a cool cave. We bought a red & white wine for gifts. Lucky for us, Todd's local sourdough bread was delivered there fresh, so we bought 3 loaves. We had never tried it before but heard it was the best. I agree! The staff was very knowledgeable, the owner I think. We were very pleased with our purchases & will be back when we have more time to try all the wines

the wine was solid, not my personal favorite but still beautiful. their 2016 red from their sister label was nice and sweet yet still strong. the lady pouring my wine was kind, explained everything in a way my novice brain could understand, and made reasonable conversation considering how many other patrons were in the store at the time!

Very cute spot to stop for wine tasting or a glass (or two). Staff was friendly, however they never came back to provide us the bill after we were done. We had to find them inside. One was pouring tasting and the other was just sitting back in the corner. Wine was good and prices were fair.

To business owner, thanks for letting me know you have six other zins, I didn't realize!! I would love to come back and try your other zins. I must have had the other end of your spectrum of zins

I love coming to this tasting room! The wine is arguably some of the best. However, the new-ish rule (last time I came it was only 2 bottles) that the purchase of THREE bottles of wine replaces ONE tasting fee is absurd. It absolutely deters me from buying any wine on principle alone. The wine is not cheap by any means and having to purchase well over $60 worth of wine (that's if you get three of the cheapest wines) to replace a $15 tasting fee is just silly. Really hope this changes!!

First time here. Cool (literally) outside tasting under a canopy and misters for those hot days. Funny table names as well. We did get a seat inside. Super tiny tasting room. Great price $15 for 5 or 6 tastings. Zinfandel is their thing and they did not disappoint. Price points pretty good too. Only issue we had was the place was hopping and there was only 1 gal doing all the serving (who was part of the family) and the wait between pours was quite long. When she could give us attention, she explained the wines beautifully and was open to further discussion about what we were tasting. If there is only 1 server, be prepared to wait.

Super cute and friendly tasting room in downtown Murphys. There's minimal indoor seating with plenty outdoor (with heaters). The tasting was $15 for 6 wines - waived with 3 bottle purchase. Mostly reds and they specialize in Zinfandel. The wines were tasty and each had different notes. The staff was very friendly! Lots of info on the wines but also happy to answer questions. Stop here next time you're in Murphys!

What a beautiful and inviting wine tasting room tucked in the middle of the town, Murphy's. $15 tasting of 6 types of wines is an absolute deal especially when their wines are so good! You can be the judge of that and come on in and give your taste buds a whirl!

Definitely good and decent wines but the overall experience was average. The tasting included a good variety of wines but the pour were very small, two small sips - if that which barely was enough to get a good sense of the wine and didn't leave us wanting more. Our server was very intense, she was very nice and friendly but talked a lot and since the pour were small it almost seemed like we were being rushed out for the next party (they were extremely busy). Perhaps if we ordered full glasses instead of just the tasting it wouldn't felt like we could stay a while. Overall, loved the outdoor space, the wines were decent but the tastings small. We would be willing to try it again.

What a great little place! We were here during the Holiday event last week in Murphys and what stopped us to go in was they had a live band! Everyone was having a good time, so we joined in on the fun! Oh and the wine is pretty good too. I honestly couldn't tell you what I had, but it was red.

I loved the Sauv Blanc. Great service. Friendly staff. Good outdoor seating options. Dog friendly.

Love coming here when in Murphy's and will definitely be back. Sitting on the front or back patio is so enjoyable. Last time we were here me and my best friend sat in the back and people-watched, also we loved the dog visitors, extra adorable!

The wines on the tasting menu were all amazing and despite how busy it was, Ashley was super attentive and engaging and an absolute joy to talk to. Although I'm not from the area I will definitely make an effort to return here next time I'm back! (Side note: this winery is NOT associated with Gavin newsom in any way)

First stop in Murphys and we are not disappointed. Friendly reception and clean well appointed tasting room. The star of Newsome Harlow is their Petite Sirah. For $26 a bottle you get a well structured, well balanced full of black and blue fruit nectar of the gods. We tasted 7 Wines and enjoyed the Petite Sirah the best and the Zinfandel a close second. Wines are inexpensive and tasting fees are waived for every bottle purchased. Did we like Newsome Harlow, hell yes. We give it 5 stars! As good as it gets.

Tracy is amazing at explaining the wine. She's kind, knowledgeable and makes you feel right at home. We went to 4 wineries in Murphy's today and Newsome Harlow was by far the best! The wine was affordable and delicious. Sydney is the owner's daughter and she is awesome! Definitely check this place out!

Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Went on Sunday afternoon and sat inside. Tasting are $15 each but waived if you buy 3 bottles - average $30 each. Cheaper tastings are available at other wineries and there are more than enough wineries to choose from in this downtown location. Be warned: pours are very small and for the price, you will get more for your money somewhere else.

The wines are NH are amazing. More importantly the team working at NH really makes the difference. They are always super nice, helpful, and most importantly, make sure you're having a good time while visiting the tasting rooms. If you're looking for great wines with even greater staff you've found the place.

My husband and I went to Murphys to celebrate my birthday. Very nice experience and the ladies are so great! The Rose was definitely my favorite out of the tastings The front patio is very inviting, and customers are there having a great time with their bottle of wine they purchased after their tasting. A lot of the visitors are members, so this must be a top tasting room out along Main Steet!

Absolutely love this place! First and foremost their wines are incredible. We've been coming here for years and have never experienced a bad wine. Next, the location is awesome. We enjoy the back deck over looking the park as much as the courtyard. Heaters, misters and shade making it possible to relax all year long. Finally and most importantly is the staff. Mike is great and always greets you with a smile. He is welcoming and cares about your experience. And I can't forget our favorite member of the team, Sydney. Her knowledge of the wines and her outstanding personality make you feel like family. And if that wasn't enough, her pours are great and she always offers you the right to revisit something. Highly recommend Newsome Harlow Winery!

Great for wine tasting. If you are visiting Murphys, you must take some time to enjoy 6 different wines for $10. My favorite is the Meritage.

Busy stop but take it and wait if you must because these wines are super delicious. Across the board, the whites and reds, are to be tasted and savored and enjoyed. Buy a boat load and impress your friends!

Fantastic wine! Great selection of quite a few different types of wine and they were all honestly pretty delicious. They have a nice outdoor seating area both in the front and back so if it's a nice day or you want to be a little more spaced out during pandemic times there are options! The bottles are also all very reasonably priced so it's easy to take a few bottles home!

Very nice place, overall. The wine was generally a bit bitter for my taste and the hosts didn't make much of a conversation, but overall a good spot with good wine. $10 per tasting, but we used the yelp special.

This winery is a little gem in downtown Murphy's. My friend and I had a great and fun experience tasting there with Sydney. She was so knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the wines and left with a few bottles. Our fav in Murphy's

We've been wine club members for years so obviously we love the wines! This post is just a shout out to Ashley who has been in the tasting room our last couple of visits. Ashley is so personable, knowledgeable and has just the right touch with customers. #winning!

Good wines in a clean and modern atmosphere. Unfortunately when we stopped in it was very busy and it seemed like they were struggling to keep up. It was a holiday so it's understandable, but the other tasting rooms we visited seemed to manage it a bit more smoothly. There also seemed to be some service and logistical issues they were working through at the time. The price point is a bit higher than other tasting rooms in town, but not necessarily higher than you would find in Sonoma, Paso, etc. We ended up taking home one bottle. It's dog-friendly, which we appreciate.

After writing a disappointing review recently, Sydney has gone above and beyond with communicating with me to make sure we visit again. She explained they had a one off day and it was not their normal high level of service. We appreciate her follow up and will give them a try in the future.

First let me start by saying that if you don't have Ashley, come back and make sure she is on shift! This woman is legit and honest which is more than I can say for most servers. Our wine was good, there were a few I really enjoyed, but realistically the few I did enjoy were amplified by Ashley's upbeat positive attitude, even when there were some pretty demeaning members. Thank you for having this tasting option for us and thank you for having Ashley!

Ashley was AMAZING. It was pretty busy for a Tuesday she made sure we were taken care of. Wine was good, tasting area was perfect for a girls date. We would love to visit again.

Sydney set us up with a wonderful reservation. Her darling brother Sebastian was our host along with his beautiful mother. All so knowledgeable and fantastic conversationalists. Fine wine and very elegant. Favorites: Drama Queen, Derailed, Meritage and Big John. They have many more labels too. Thank you for a good time and good wines.

I liked several of their wines but our group didn't have a particularly good time overall -- and for a $10 tasting fee per person, skimpy pours and $24 bottles I'd expect to have a better time! The server wasn't outright rude but she wasn't very nice, either. She was disinterested in our experience at best. I was also disappointed that we were told we couldn't open the bottle we had just bought to drink on their patio because they were close to closing. I felt like we had enough time for a quick glass -- after all, they weren't closed yet! - but I didn't argue since she was so unwelcoming. Would it have killed her to let us relax on the patio while they closed up? California is full of great wine at great prices so, to me, wine tasting is all about service and overall experience. Murphy's isn't Napa -- $10 is high so pour more, be nicer, or waive more than one tasting fee with purchase -- do something to make your customers feel welcome! The most pleasant part of the tasting was when the couple tasting next to us gifted us a bottle of wine on our way out! It was an unexpected and generous gesture.

Good wine and staff was very friendly. My girlfriend and I went tasting on a Tuesday afternoon in March, so it was just us in the room for the time we were there. The manager (I believe Syndey was her name) was extremely friendly and provided a great experience. Highly recommend.

By far the best wines in Calaveras! They are my top 3 in all of California, and I'm a huge wineaux. Scott and team are truly friends with the power of bringing great wine to fruition. :)

This is my new favorite spot in Murphy's! Usually we come in for a glass of wine on the patio, but this time we tried the full tasting menu - it was great! I actually really liked all of the wine we tried. Ashley poured for us; she was super helpful, knowledgeable and funny. One of the better people we had ever had pour for us. I highly recommend this place; great wine and great customer service. Thank you Ashley!

This winery is in a great location. It is on main street and right in downtown Murphy's. They have great wine and I love that you can do a tasting or order by the glass, whichever you are in the mood for. The place has lots of outdoor seating with comfy couches. This place is also dog friendly and everyone who works here is very friendly and knowledgeable. It's a great place to stop while you are in the area and enjoy a glass of wine and hang out with your friends or family. We will definitely be back here!

I came here only because the place I stayed had a bottle in the fridge. Not impressed by the wine and the cost is the highest on the strip. $15 tasting waived with 3 bottles... what a joke. Skip it if you are looking for a good deal and good atmosphere cause it's NOT here.

This is my all time favorite winery/tasting room. We have been a wine club member here for years and this is the one I will never stop (I belong to a few). My favorite wine - The Big John, but all the other wines are great too. My husband and I have chatted with the owners during a visit or two and the are great and so is the tasting room staff. The tasting room can get very busy on weekends and special events. One perk of being a wine club member is the Members only tasting room. Looking forward to our trip next weekend to pick-up wine and see Sugarland.
