"The closing of Newtowne Grille in Cambridge was absolutely crushing. Their pizza was among the best of the “New York style” thin crust in the region and to see yet another old-school dive breaks my heart." - Erika Adams

"Newtowne Grille, a landmark in Porter Square for over 50 years, is known for its affordable pizza and dive bar atmosphere. Despite some modernization during the pandemic, it largely remained unchanged since its opening in 1966. It was popular for sports watching, trivia nights, and its $12 pizza-and-pitcher deal. The restaurant faced challenges during the COVID pandemic, including false reports of its closure, which contributed to its final closure on March 19. The venue was cherished by regulars for its welcoming environment and friendly staff." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

"Newtowne Grille, a longstanding dive bar in Porter Square, has undergone significant changes due to the pandemic. Known for its outstanding pizza, the venue remains a local favorite, attracting both old and new patrons. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, including a prolonged shutdown and the need to revamp its menu for takeout and delivery, Newtowne has retained its core identity as a welcoming neighborhood bar. The bar's history of adapting to changes, such as the smoking ban in the early 2000s, has helped it navigate through the pandemic while continuing to offer a familiar and inviting atmosphere to its loyal clientele." - Terrence Doyle

"My household has fierce allegiances to several regional pizza styles. (Our kittens are named Sally and Pepe, which reveals one of the styles, but don’t tell Pepe that we’re Team Sally’s.) When it comes to cheap, reliable, excellent New York-style pizza, we have two local picks, both in Cambridge: Newtowne Grille and Armando’s (see below for the latter.) Newtowne is great for dining in, especially if you love dive-y old sports bars or want to take advantage of the super-cheap pitcher-of-beer-and-pizza deal. But takeout’s great, too; head to the door on the far right. Pepperoni’s the way to go. —RLB" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal, Terrence Doyle

Just don't bother. I ordered a Buffalo chicken pizza and it took an hour to come out. No update or apology from the bartender, just a brush off that the kitchen got slammed with last call food orders at 8:30. But it wasn't busy - believe me. I finally got the pizza and it was burnt cheese, bubbles, no sauce, and mostly dough. It was a disgrace and it was $14 for a 12 inch pizza. I used to go to Newtowne a lot and the food was DELICIOUS. No joke. I ate half begrudgingly because the kitchen was closed at that point and I was hungry. Then I got to the more burnt half and I couldn't eat it- it was that inedible. I went to the bar and said "this is just so bad...". The bartender seemed perplexed and gave me a $10 email gift card - which I have yet to receive. It gets worse! My friend's sweet chili boneless wings tasted like refried beans wings and my other friends buffalo wings were the skinniest wings I've ever seen. Last, the bartenders didn't really come to offer more drinks as you drank (it wasn't busy).

their Chicken Parm sandwich is just amazing. I tried the fish and chips this time: I really liked the fish and chips - the coleslaw wasn't great, but overall a very tasty meal.

Where do I start- 1st horrible experience was ordering directly from their website. Get to the store just to find out they were closed. They apologized and blamed it on the thrid party app. Order again the same night- they forget my pizza. But no worries they will give a large pizza instead of small. I recieved a COLD/BURNT pizza. Looks like someone refused it so they had to get rid of it. Horrible!!!

Use to be a regular at this place before the COVID shut down. It had great food and cheap beer, along with a great staff. Now it's horrible. The prices are higher across the board. The food is laughable now. They have the smallest buffalo wings I've seen in my life. We got a burnt pizza that had almost no toppings, just burnt dough. we got multiple different items, and all were mediocre at best. The staff was fine, but it's not the same. We were told the kitchen closes at 9 on a Friday which is an absolute joke. based on other reviews, the 12$ pizza and pitcher deal is a scam which wouldn't surprise me if true. This place use to have a great atmosphere with regulars, staff, food and cheap beer. Felt like a "Cheers" type of bar. Now, it's not worth it at all. Sad to know the old Newtowne is gone.

Newtowne has always been my favorite local bar. I haven’t been in a year due to the pandemic and decided to stop in. The food has definitely gotten an upgrade! It was the best chicken sandwich I’ve had in a long time. Beer was cold and our bartender tori was top notch! 10/10 will be back soon!!!

I don't argue that the taste is good, but this is the third time I've bought and it's always burned from underneath, this time it was too much

Beer is cheap (4.25 for most drafts), food is pretty good for bar food. Their pizza is really good too. Great place to hang out or watch a game. Service can be really bad at times. Its often the waitresses can be rude or get your order wrong.

Great pizza and great wings. The not buffalo wings, can't remember what they were, they were really delicious. So delicious. Also the pizza is very good. The restaurant itself is fun and the people are very very nice. Eat here. You will not regret it. Honestly I want to go back thinking about it now.
