Why Hue in Vietnam is the place to go for your art and culture fix - SilverKris

"A private, labour-of-love garden house and performance space built over nine years and completed in 2017, conceived and funded by Camille Huyen and her husband Truong Dinh Ngo. Set on the Perfume Riverbank, its imperial-style wooden pillars and tiled roofs are embellished with mosaic mythical creatures made from salvaged broken porcelain, bricks and old wood the couple collected from war-damaged and derelict sites. Inside, intimate events blend visual craft and traditional performance: Camille Huyen often appears in a crimson ao dai to sing interpretations of Hue’s royal chamber music accompanied by traditional instruments and a string quartet, while invitation-only concerts — such as the Autumn Concert for the Perfume River attended by local officials, artists and intellectuals — are used to demonstrate an alternative to mass tourism. The couple arranges private performances for high-end visitors via their website and actively pursues international artistic collaborations to keep Hue’s heritage alive and integrated into contemporary life." - Joshua Zukas

We had the pleasure of discovering this hidden gem during our visit to Hue. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the owner of this beautiful riverside home. He gave us a private tour and shared the story behind the house. The atmosphere was serene, and we immediately felt calm and at peace. We then met Mrs Camille, the incredibly talented co-owner who designed the house, created the beautiful paintings displayed inside, and later performed as the vocalist alongside three wonderful musicians during the musical experience. Before the performance, they kindly served us tea and sweets, which made us feel truly cared for. The performance was intimate, emotional and interactive. We were invited to read the English translations of the lyrics before each song, which helped us connect even more with the music. Mrs Camille is so sweet and humble, and the couple are genuinely kind and passionate about what they do. Their love and respect for art, especially music and culture, really shine through as they welcome others with warmth, host charitable events and generously share their home, art and stories. This experience was a highlight of our trip and something we will never forget. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates art and meaningful cultural experiences.

Spent a fantastic evening here, with my husband, the hosts were a treasure and we were delighted to sit in on a performance of singing and music followed by fantastic food.

In Hue, right at the banks of the Perfum River, a couple that lived in Switzerland for a long time as has returned to Vietnam and created an organic garden and a wonderful set of houses, built from reused materials. Camille is a visual artist and a musician and a very friendly host. The garden is well curated, but left „wild“ in a certain way. The property is very well maintained and Mr. Truong proudly shows the garden. Visit by appointment only, ideally arranged by a guide. There is also a possibility to arrive by boat. A wonderful oasis in busy Hue, well worth a visit. There are also dinners and concerts from time to time.
