Best Affordable Takeout Restaurants in Oakland, Berkeley, and the East Bay | Eater SF

"Large portions and classic American breakfasts are the calling cards of this West Oakland diner, a newly reborn version of a beloved El Cerrito spot (and, more recently, of San Pablo’s now-shuttered Alex’s Giant Burger). The burgers, omelets, and fluffy, buttery pancakes are all solid options here, but the Asian-leaning dishes are worth trying too — say, a couple of runny-yolked eggs over white rice, with teriyaki chicken or a couple slices of grilled Spam on the side. Call in or come in person to place your takeout order." - Luke Tsai

Google
I love this place so much. Affordable and generous portions of delicious, hearty, classic diner food. Atmosphere is like stepping into a grandma’s kitchen with quirky, colorful art and the most epic salt & pepper shaker collection. GF loved her California Omelette and I think the Mushroom Cheese Burger was one of the best I’ve ever had. Also homemade ranch dressing is on point! Can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the menu!

Google
Stopped by here on a Friday morning. Once inside we noticed the cute decor on the tables that felt homie. A nice lady told us to pick any seat, once seated we looked over the menu. Ordered two omelets and French toast. The omelets were DELICIOUS, not oily just perfect. Don’t get me started with the French toast. The BEST French toast I have ever had.

Google
A nice couple own this sweet little place with terrific breakfast and lunch fare; one of the few sit-down places in this general area. Outdoor seating available. Open 7-2 M-F. Take-out only Saturday. Closed on Sunday.

Google
I must say that this was the first restaurant where I never had an empty coffee cup. The waitress was right there, already refilling my cup. It was incredible! As I was getting my refill, I couldn’t help but think of the gas station QQR2+8R Oakland, California. The food was wonderful after that, so be sure to check out Delicious.

Google
Not a quick service place, but worth the wait. Food was no frills, yet phenomenal. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious; strongly recommend the Nature omelet, and the French toast. Friendly and mom & pip vibe added to the local and community-based atmosphere

Google
Came in to eat breakfast didn't get our food until after the lunch hour... so needless to say if your in a hurry to eat & go don't come in or eat order ahead (arrived at 11:20, for food @ 12:45pm). The service great, food was decent (I guess when you order potatoes & toast you need to be specific about "cooked" or crisp". Appreciate the hospitality & ambiance but was hoping for a better expierence.

Google
large portions of fresh food.. you won’t leave hungry or pay a fortune! the place is neat, with friendly and attentive service, and what seems like a steady flow of customers that come every day.

Google
Impeccable, hearty, gourmet, Old School Americana, freshly prepared with Top Notch meat, produce, cheese, and bread. The Guacamole Burger was astounding, for the price, especially. Clean, well packaged to go. Very homely interior, truly attentive, sincere Korean Owners. I am without a doubt going to be back next to try their breakfast and more lunch items. Thank you Nibs for not being another mediocre chain. What a blessing this place is to Oakland.

Yelp
Great service, decent diner food. I'm very happy to support a locally owned and run planner like this. It's my go-to spot for an omelette and coffee.

Jon P.

Yelp
What a delightful spot! Great prices, great ambiance, great service, and WOW the food, best French toast I've had in YEARS! It was so good we had to order extra to go!

Kaitlyn W.

Yelp
I thought it would be crowed because it has so many 5 star reviews. It wasn't bad at all , Great service, great food , great atmosphere. If you want home cooked food with a full belly at a cheap price this is the spot ! Definitely will be back !

Yelp
This is one of those family owned small dining restaurants that is worth driving to in order to experience a simple yet delicious breakfast or lunch meals (not open for dinner). The service is excellent and the spirit of the place is simple yet comfortable and clean. Try their Teriyaki Chicken and eggs with rice or their Ultimate Breakfast Creation with Home Potatoes or whatever else may suit your taste buds. You'll definitely come back for sure!

Yelp
Nibs is the quintessential mom & pop old school breakfast diner run by a cute & quirky korean couple. Despite it being a little run down, the inside is decorated with a hodge podge of fun knick knacks and the food is solid. Esp the waffle. Yum. The whole experience is a vibe and I'd gladly recommend it to anyone looking for a good local spot :)
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Another delicious breakfast, combo omelette comes w/hash browns, side pancakes & sausage. Huge portions, even the sausage links are long. Never a bad meal..Got it to go! Order always correct. Nib's does not skimp on anything..

Yelp
Very homey ambiance. The service was amazing, the lady at the front has a heart of gold. The food was really good, definitely try it out.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice little neighborhood place. Don't expect free range chicken or organic veggies. Place is not terribly clean.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is always amazing, it always has been for decades. Staff is so friendly, feels like family. Restaurant is always clean. Table seats & counter seats. I absolutely recommend Nibs! I will absolutely come back!

Yelp
Atmosphere (decor, music, indoor/setup) 5/5 stars Customer service (man and woman cooking and serving) 5/5 stars Food (shrimp omelette and hot chocolate) 0/5 stars Must have been an off day for ordering food for me. The hot chocolate was the sweetest thing I've had in months! The shrimp cheese omelette was trash. I'm sorry to say that because all else was nice. I must have ordered the worst things on the menu. Sucks because the reviews are so good.

Yelp
Super solid diner that makes me feel a type of way. I'm tempted to follow the typical recipe website playbook by telling you a long story about my childhood diner and then hiding the actual recipe/review beneath a huge wall of text and ads (while making the "skip to recipe" button super tiny).. But I won't. Just know that you're going to get a solid diner experience here. Food itself is great (I usually get their version of a Denver omelet) and comes out quickly. Usually a pretty quiet crowd so it's easy to have those murmured conversations with your "I just woke up" sleepy voice. This is my go-to spot when a friend is in town and we want to grab a sit-down breakfast.

Yelp
Nibs is one of my favorite lunch/brunch spots (and it doesn't hurt that it is only a few blocks away). My partner and I have tried many dishes and all are fantastic: beef teriyaki, cheeseburgers, soups of the day, omelettes, waffles, french toast, and sandwiches. My favorite is the "super" sandwich which is a turkey melt always cooked to perfection. It is tiny, so it fills up quickly and can feel a bit claustrophobic. This is not an issue, when going on off-times. The place is run by Hannah and Alex, who are nice as can be, although it is just Alex cooking and Hannah serving, so please be patient. It's worth it. Lastly, I would be remiss in not to mention that the portions are enormous, so come hungry.

Yelp
We were looking for a place to get some food about 1100 after leaving the San Francisco area and YELP recommended this place. We waited for quite awhile for the food to arrive but our party enjoyed what we ordered. My wife is a pancake aficionado and she was not disappointed. I had breakfast (good) my son in law had a mushroom burger and we had no complaints. The staff was working hard to get orders out as quickly as possible and the did a good job considering there were only 2 people. It's a small homey place and deserves the 4 stars.

Yelp
Hmm this did not hit the mark. Firstly the neighborhood is a little rough. Secondly the food didn't have any flavor. It seems like they cook completely omitting salt and pepper. I understand everyone has different tastes but a basic amount of salt and pepper should be used. I ordered an omelet which came with home fried potatoes. The omelet was okay but bland. But the potatoes were inedible. I think they boil them then put it on the stove for char marks. Would not return.

Yelp
First time visiting this cute little restaurant. It's a tiny mom and pop spot with good food and great service. Though I was alone, I was greeted and seated immediately. The host (who's also the server and busboy) cleaned my table with a disinfectant wipe, which was comforting. Despite how busy they were, she waited on me right away. I ordered a breakfast plate. I appreciate the variety of breakfast meats they had to offer as not many places serve turkey sausage these days. The food was served promptly, which was nice and hot when it reached my table. Also, the prices were good for the amount of food you get. My only complaint is that the up-charge to sub the toast for one pancake was a bit higher than expected. Other than that, everything was great. I'd definitely go back.

Rey S.

Yelp
My family and I absolutely love nibs!!! Hannah is amazing and the food is great as well. Such a great place for family brunch. Hannah is so sweet and her services nothing short of amazing. The plates are big portions as well. Definitely give this place a try!

Alley A.

Yelp
Both food and service are great. Food could use a little more seasoning but it was still good. Be patient, one cook at the time I visited.

Yelp
5/5 high recommend. Total hidden gem in west Oakland at the old Emma's fried fish spot if you old enough to remember. Looks like a moms & pop spot with really good breakfast! Menu had a lot of choices and options for sides. Big thick bacon.. yummy sausage links. Definitely good quality. Definitely will be back again to try out other menu selections. Maybe I will try out their lunch menu. Very good customer service. And food came out quick.
google avatar

Claudia Menjivar J.

Yelp
My picture here isn't that good, but trust me these are the best strawberry French toasts I ever had. I don't know how Alex does it, but they're delicious

David S.

Yelp
It was great to eat at nibs restaurant again. A true Korean-American style breakfast place. Last time I had a meal at this establishment was back when they had a shop in El Cerrito. The vegetables in the omelette are fresh and cooked to the point of perfection. The flavors are well balanced and you can taste and they use just the right amount of oil to maintain a soft texture. The hash browns are to die for. The outside is crunchy while on the inside, you enjoy the softness of the potatoes. And again, they don't overdo with the oil.

Yelp
Love Nibs yummy yummy the breakfast is home like you need a cover or blanket! A hood cartoon like when you were a kid! The turkey sausage is juicy and so so good. The little lady is so nice and sweet. I love the customer service! I even customized my grits with cheese, green onions and jalapeños! Yum

Yelp
This place is run by a an husband/wife team that are veterans in the diner business. Nibs used to be in El Cerrito, and then they opened up a place in San Pable (Giant Burger). I always get the same 2 things: Cheeseburger and fries, or over medium eggs with potatoes and toast. Simple diner food that is very well executed and is very consistent because of the experience of the people running the show. If you are in the mood for diner food, definitely go to this place!

Max A.

Yelp
Still one of the best breakfast places around. From breakfast to lunch food, it is all so generous and utterly delicious. Hannah, the owner and server is an absolute peach. She is always extremely sweet and even remembers peoples names (I don't know how she does it). There is always pleasant music playing in the background. It is truly one of the best places around.

Yelp
On Saturdays, they only do to-go. That was fine by me as I had a puppy waiting for me at home. I swear, I put him in his crate for 35 minutes so I can go get gas and pick up a meal and this boy whines when I get back like I left him for a day without food or water. Anyway, the food was great. They are soon raising their prices which they posted (I mean, inflation) but even when they do, I think I'm coming back here. I got a mini breakfast and an OJ and left a pretty good tip and it was very reasonable. Btw, if that's the mini breakfast, American's are eating too much. I got a heap of home fries, an egg, 2 sausage and 2 slices of buttered rye toast. While I waited I saw one customer come in and was greeted by first name. When I left the woman working there was very kind while handing me my food. My dog waited for me to finish just so he could justify begging me to lick the plate. He enjoyed the egg yolk.

Yelp
This is my all-time favorite breakfast spot in the Bay Area, I've been here multiple times and had different plates, everything so far has been amazing!! I love their French toast even though I didn't get it this time I wanted to try their burgers and they were soooooo good! Very good seasoning and the special sauce they have is amazing. The little older lady that's behind the cash register always provides the BEST customer service.
google avatar

Marvin Y.

Yelp
Generous portions and fresh food. I had an omelette, while he had made-to-order waffle. Sweet couple run the place. Warm and cozy atmosphere with soothing jazz music in the background. Check out their salt and pepper shaker collection!

George B.

Yelp
still so good. My family loves this place. Great everything. Great neighborhood atmosphere. Lovely people
google avatar

Jose Manuel C.

Yelp
I enjoyed the service and food from nibs restaurant. Heads up: SATURDAY THEY ONLY DO TO GO ORDERS! If you don't like that please question yourself: am I a Karen? I did see about 4 people leaving because of this, in my opinion ITS A FIRST WORLD PROBLEM! My favorite restaurants do not have indoor or any seating to begin with ( taco trucks, empanada place down the street from here). I ate the meat lovers omelette, it had some cheese on top, it was yummy!!!!! It came with hash browns toast and a bit of melon ! I also had a coffee . The staff is super kind and the food was awesome!!!!! I will return again Saturday or not
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
I've come on 2 separate occasions on days where it says they are open but it was closed one time and this Saturday morning, they were doing takeout only, disappointing. Really wanna try but will likely not try again.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Food is tasty, friendly staff. I've been here a few times and I always enjoy it, will keep going back whenever I want to eat out for breakfast
google avatar

Charlotte T.

Yelp
It was ok, my first time. It's one of those go to spots for breakfast when you run out of time a mom&pop shop. Potatoes wasn't all the way cooked, and they were just potatoes no onion or pepper. However they did grill them longer and added green onions. Prices are decent, however I won't be quick to return..

Emma G.

Yelp
We've never actually been able to eat here because they are ALWAYS CLOSED or have some sign on the door like "to go only" "chefs are sick today". We have tried to eat here three different times in two months (because there's no where else around) and they advertise as open but aren't. BOOOOOO
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
My favorite breakfast spot! There's just such a warm and inviting energy here that is so rare to find in a restaurant these days. And the food is solid! With big portions! I come here multiple times a week
google avatar

Rimar L.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast. This place is family owned and run by a married couple. The husband works in the kitchen whipping up the food and his wife works the front counter and brings out the food to your table when it's ready. Great people! I used to go to them regularly when they were at another location in El Cerrito. Word around town was they had a fire and were forced out of the building. I randomly drove by this new location one day and saw the sign on the entrance. 'Nibs???. No way!', I thought. So one day I decided to go check this place out and sure enough it was the same lady I got used to seeing at the El Cerrito location. I highly recommend this place for a delicious, no-frills, diner-style breakfast. Please come support this wonderful, family-run local business!
google avatar

Eddie H.

Yelp
First time here... quick service. Very polite. Menu had a nice variety.. I always do the French toast test. Hella good. Not too sweet good use of bread. Killed it. Sausage was good and bacon too. Didn't taste cheap. Not burnt where you don't wanna eat it. Hate when restaurants do that. Orange juice tasted fresh. Not sure but loved it. It was a lunch well spent
google avatar

Eduardo D.

Yelp
A very charming and friendly restaurant. The food is always fresh and delicious. The young lady (Hannah) who takes the order couldn't be nicer. Love the breakfast dishes and the sandwiches. Thank you!
google avatar

Nancy R.

Yelp
Delish diner fare in a homey setting. Owner Hannah is delightful, attentive and welcoming. I love this place!

Nashea L.

Yelp
10s all across the board , foods great service great and I like the cute little set up !
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
I truly enjoy the female staff/server. She was precious but the food was gross flavorless and just not what Is depicted on this site. The photos taken sure catfished the F outta me. So good job on that one. It's very noticeable that the majority of the customers are return/locals/ friends or family which is great. But non regular foodies who look for flavor and to eat with your eyes, this is prob not the place for you
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Excellent food made with fresh ingredients, generous portions and served with a joy and flair for customer service. Very friendly folks here, good value for your dollar. I am a big fan of their home fries and always get them with whatever omelette I choose.
google avatar

Torey W.

Yelp
Sadly we were only in town for a funeral. Stopped in to grab breakfast to go. I ordered the breakfast sandwich. Wow!!! Thick flavorful piece of ham fresh tasting. Such a cute place with a collection of novelty salt and pepper shakers .

S O.

Yelp
Great homemade food. Everything made perfect. Even had homemade jam at the table which was great.
google avatar

Shauna R.

Yelp
Aww this place was cute and hospitality, the jazz music playing was a great touch and it was like a oG spot they had antique artifacts it was dope. The customer service was great from entering until leaving. The food was excellent couldnt even eat it all it was hearty and fulfilling. We will definitely be back! It was worth visiting have a great day

Kristin D.

Yelp
Food is delish, service is great! Cute lil unassuming spot in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Usually get the charbroiled chicken sandwich. Bread is perfectly toasted n buttery, chicken is juicy. Fries are always crispy. Fruit is always sweet. Everything is fresh. They also use the real good buttermilk ranch dressing that is prepared on site not bought in a bottle.
google avatar

Shuntella P.

Yelp
So, I went here for the second time because my daughter loves their French Toast and Strawberries. I ordered the steak bites with onion, mushrooms, peppers and tomatoes, over medium eggs, potatoes and pancakes. As soon as I was done with a portion of my food I felt sick. My food came out both ways. I called and asked to speak with a manager about what happened, she said no manager was there, I said okay I would like to speak with anyone who can assist me. She said I'm the owner.... SO WHY DIDN'T YOU SAY THAT WHEN I ASKED FOR THE MANAGER!!! I explained what happened. She said well there is nothing she can do to help me. Not unless i bring the food back. I said you want the food that I threw up as well. She said yes. See I'm not sure if she thought this was a game. So BET. You can have it all back including what I threw up. She told me to never come back again. Which I am fine with but you have lost service . And I know a lot of people who eat here and they will not be eating here anymore. You could have handled it differently!!! Worst service ever in history Can't give no starts but yeah. The one I gave is because I had to.
google avatar

Andria S.

Yelp
Yummy diner style food. Good service. Lots of regulars including us. Easy parking but you can only eat there on weekdays

Paula O.

Yelp
We arrived around noon and the ambiance of the space was wonderful. We were immediately greeted at the door and was sat at a very spacious table. My mother started to point out all the small figurines which turned out to be salt and pepper shakers! The restaurant had beautiful decorations. Our waitress was wonderful as well, she offered us various sauces and was super kind. One thing to point out, the scrambled eggs were AMAZING!! Super fluffy and not dry! Overall, We will definitely be coming back. Service and food was amazing
google avatar

Ruth S.

Yelp
I have been craving pancakes so I thought I would try Nibs in West Oakland, and I'm so glad I did! Nibs is a great local spot serving people who live and work in the neighborhood, a truly Oakland place. Nibs is a family restaurant with wife Hannah running the dining room and husband Alex in the kitchen. They are so warm and welcoming that if all you want is a cup of coffee and a bit of toast, it would be a great spot, but instead most diners ordered the hearty breakfasts. Oh.. and the coffee, I don't expect great coffee at a diner, I was wrong. The coffee was delicious too!
google avatar

Albert K.

Yelp
Nibs is everything right with family-owned and operated small businesses. Cooked-to-order fresh food with generous portions to boot, this is one of my favorite brunch spots of all time. Still owned and operated by the same family and couple from over a decade ago in El Cerrito, Oaklanders can now claim this gem as their own.

K V.

Yelp
My son and I were looking for a place to eat and was driving thru the neighborhood and found Nibs to be a place with high ratings on Google (thru Google Maps) and also Yelp. I was a bit worried of the parking situation of the neighborhood but looked past it and parked around the block... it looks sketchy but seriously it'll be okay. Went inside we were immediately seated and menus given. What impressed me when I sat down, the waitress used a disposable cleaning wipe to clean the table and made sure it was clean. Also noticed everything she handed us from the menu, our silverware and condiments were also clean. I could see the kitchen from where I was sitting and it was super clean and organized. So extra comfortable. We ordered and talk about big portions! My guacamole omelette was the best omelette I've ever had and with rice!! My son had waffles, eggs and sausage and he ate that up too! The waitress and cook were so nice to give us our food we enjoyed so much! I left a good tip and will be back again this week! Glad we found a great place with good people!
