We were on our way back from a wake and looking for someplace to have dinner. We pulled into the parking lot and it didn't look promising with so many cars and people flooding into the place, but there were a few leaving, which worked in our favor as the man passing in front of our car motioned to us where he was parked. He pulled out and we pulled right into his spot. It was a Thursday night, but you would have thought it was a Saturday. Since we were parked, we figured let's at least give it a try, even though it was obvious this was a reservations required type of place. From the host and hostess, to the bar manager, to our server, and finally the food, it was clear this was a top notch restaurant with so much thought put into every detail, especially when it came to customer service. I told them up front that we did not have a reservation, and asked what our chances were. They said if we wanted to wait at the bar they may have something opening up soon. This is where the difference between good and exceptional came in. They didn't just point us in the direction of a crowed bar and leave us to fend for ourselves, the host escorted us into the bar area and introduced us to Conner, the bar manager. Conner had an acute awareness of his domain and although there were presently no seats available, he advised us where to stand which was an optimal spot for soon to be seating and then he came over and handed us menus to look at. I had never experienced this kind of service before and was quite impressed. We weren't there long enough to even get a drink when the hostess came and said they had a table for us as long as they could have it back in an hour. We told them "no problem". We were seated at a lovely table on the outdoor patio. Shortly after, Sam, our very experienced server, based on her friendly and confident demeanor, came over and offered us water, then a few minutes later took our drink order. Let me begin by saying we never felt rushed throughout the entire process. I honestly felt that we were in good hands and being treated like we were having dinner at our friends restaurant. We were both very relaxed and enjoying the experience. Now for the food. I ordered the organic chicken, and my BF ordered the short ribs. Our meals came out fairly quickly and both were served in large bowls, another 'first'. The chicken and vegetables were a top a bed of deliciously creamy mashed potatoes, that in itself was a winner. The chicken was moist and tender with a light coating over it and was cut in large pieces making it easy to manage. The carrots, mushrooms and onions were all cooked to perfection. I tried the short ribs from my other half's dish, which as I mentioned, was served the same way and it was also very good. Nicholas Barrel and Roost was a unique and lovely experience from start to finish and we will most definitely be back!
