Restaurants Fight Insurance Companies Over Coronavirus-Related Losses | Eater

"A Monmouth County, New Jersey eatery that has sued its insurer (citing a governor's civil-authority order to close nonessential businesses) under a civil-authority provision, arguing that the government closure triggered business-interruption coverage and joining a broader wave of similar suits testing whether such orders create a trigger for payout." - Caleb Pershan

We really enjoyed our first time here. We had brunch with some friends and the waitress was so nice. She joked around with us too. We had a great meal. The drinks were nicely crafted too. Can't wait to come back for lunch.

We made a reservation for brunch and we're seated right away. Staff filled the water glasses immediately and allowed us all the time we needed to peruse their extensive wine and cocktail menu. All the drinks were served rather quickly and had nice, fresh flavors. We opted to share the Scotch egg, which was prepared and presented beautifully. We dined on the Shovel salad, the Hangover sandwich, as well as the Surf and Turf. No one had any complaints about the food, portion size or freshness of what was presented. We shared a Dubai chocolate martini for dessert, which tasted amazing. We definitely want to go back for dinner soon!

Stopped here on the way home from the beach. It wasn't very busy when we came in. The service was friendly and unhurried.. the waiter came by whenever we waived her down but didn't stop by much otherwise. We got the cheese curds for apps and they were good. The roost sauce was on the sweet side, not spicy as I expected from the orangy color. The crispy halibut was crispy I guess from the breading? A bit bland. The mushroom and bok choy were better but not great either. The chicken dish was fine, the chicken was a tad dry in some parts so we wouldn't get it again. The pizza was honestly the 'best' on the table and the cheapest. I'm not sure what their best dish might be but we didn't luck out and get anything worthy of a $30+ price unfortunately. Maybe the atmosphere is better outside on the deck, it wasn't anything special inside and the music was a bit loud for my taste. Is it a bar or an upscale restaurant? I wasn't sure.

Google
First time here and it was great. My wife had the Dubai Chocolate Martini which was delicious. I started with the East Coast Oysters. For our meal my wife had the Filet Mignon which was slightly overcooked but still very good and Mashed Potatoes. I had the Shrimp and Garlic Sauce with Risotto. Everything was fantastic.

Wife and I went here last night. Pretty packed for a Monday night. Got the burrata appetizer to share, I got the filet, she got ny strip, and we split mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese sides. We also split apple dessert. Got a few drinks as well. Not overly expensive, but we did end up spending over $200 for just the two of us. All food was delicious though. Liked this restaurant way better than Char. A little more upscale feel, but still casual dining. Service was good. Would definitely recommend!

This restaurant is a real neighborhood gem! The atmosphere felt warm and inviting, and the staff was genuinely friendly. The food is always amazing!

I can’t believe I even have to write this but came here last night and my boyfriend got very sick from undercooked pasta (pasta bolognese) dish. When we tasted the dish we were not sure whether it was supposed to be like that because the pasta was very large (which I’ve never had before) and it tasted very slightly underdone and starchy. We should have obviously returned it but we weren’t sure, which led to a night of being sick. We were both flabbergasted because I honestly didn’t even think it was possible to undercook pasta like that, especially at a restaurant. Didn’t even know that was a thing because in all of my life of going out to eat pasta I’ve literally never had undercooked pasta. The meat that came with the dish was good. I ordered steak which I had to return because it was overcooked (I requested medium rare). The new steak was cooked properly. I will say at least that the Brussels sprouts were delicious but that was it. Nice atmosphere and good service but the food was atrocious.

Google
This place was absolutely fabulous. Service A-1 . Food was magnificent. I had the gobetti pasta with short rib ragout and my Partner had the short ribs which he loved with mashed potatoes and garnish. My baby had the kids macaroni which could fill up 2 adults. In all with the tip included was 115.00 not to bad we even had 2 drinks. I'd definitely recommend this place for a nice date night , girls night or solo doing your own thing . Atmosphere was chill laid back, nice lighting . Nice group of people at the bar and everyone speaks to you coming in and leaving. I really liked the fact we came 20 min before closing and they still treated us well , not rushing us to order or hurry eat and leave . Definitely my new spot💯✌🏽

Yelp
An another absolute banger of a meal!!! This place is just amazing. Every server is well adverse to working there. The drinks are delicious and the food is even better. The vibe is so cute and now that it's decorated for Christmas it's even better!

Yelp
Really good meal and great service. Very popular restaurant that is upscale casual. Not Your Grandma's Crudité was a large enough for four mix of grilled and raw vegetables with a hummus did, wish there was more of the dip. Salads are definitely large enough to share and a couple of choice salads. Mains were fresh fish Halibut, Cod and pasta dishes. Prices are inline with other restaurants in the area. Save room for desserts

Yelp
First time here. Great atmosphere. Simple basic 1 page menu, good wine and bourbon options. Food was fantastic, Host and bartender were excellent as well.

Yelp
We went to see James Taylor at the PNC Art Center and looked for a place to eat before the concert. I took a chance and went to this nice restaurant. We were seated quickly and our drink order came out fast. The server was great suggesting apps. My husband enjoyed the grilled oysters and I the chicken bites. We shared the Hot honey pepperoni pizza and it was delish! The restaurant's setting was friendly and chic at the same time. We really enjoyed our experience there. Lovely place!

Yelp
Excellent, I had come in before seeing a show at Count Basie, and stopped in. Right away you walk in it's very elegant while still feeling cozy, love the decor and colors. The food was great. Service was very good and food came out fast. I had started with the Warm Homemade fresh bread, that was very good, comes with butter and somewhat of a cream cheese swirl, bread was crunchy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. Nicholas Burger was incredible. While sitting there I saw a lot of people getting burgers so I had to try it. Got mine medium rare and it was cooked perfectly, the onions cut thin and the sauce that comes on it is out of this world, they don't drown the burger in that sauce either so the meat carries the flavor of the dish.

Yelp
Hot dog party!! We enjoyed the hot dogs, pickles, chicken bites, fries (not our favorite Nicholas fries but still good) We like that Nicholas changes up the menu and cocktails. I had the Kiwi margarita, different but tasted good! We enjoy sitting at the bar,the staff are great and attentive. Our feedback for hot dog party, wish it had 2 hotdogs each, we cut in half so both of us could try the 3 hotdogs. All the dogs were good but The rodeo hotdog was killer delicious! We actually asked if we could just order a hot dog but only available for hot dog party. Bummer! Always highly recommend for delicious food and service.

Yelp
I had really high hopes for Nicholas Barrel & Roost, but those hopes fell a little flat. I went to brunch on Sunday as part of a group of 6. We sat at a table in the bar area, but the ambiance was nice. I ordered the Nicholas' Cold Black Heart drink. It's a seasonal drink for Valentine's Day. It was basically like a cherry limeade with whiskey/bourbon. They also used activated charcoal in the drink which gave it the black color. I loved this drink. Also, we shared a Rome Vacation pizza as an appetizer. I enjoyed the pizza. It was topped with a cream sauce, potatoes, caramelized onions, and bacon. I enjoyed the pizza as well. After that, everything either went downhill or was just okay. I got the Surf and Turf, which consisted of a lobster roll and a beef burger slider. It is served with chips. I asked to substitute fries for the chips, but they wouldn't let us make the substitute. Instead, those of us who would've preferred fries over chips had to pay for an order of fries while still receiving the chips we didn't want. To top it off, neither the fries or chips had any salt. Although my food was edible, I didn't find anything special about it. The slider was just a beef patty topped with cheese and onion. The lobster roll could've used a little extra touch of seasoning as well. There were several other people at our table who weren't the most pleased with their food either. Again, it was edible but nothing to rave about. This is one of those places that I've been wanting to try for a while. Their food looks good on social media, but it just fell flat for me. I think the consensus is that this is definitely a good place to grab a drink, but I probably wouldn't get much else. I'll stick to their ice cream shop down the highway instead!

Yelp
The six of us decided to pick this brunch spot for its location, because it had a full bar, because they took reservations, and because TRULY, food looked amazing online. Was greeted with warm smiles so I was optimistic. The restaurant had an upscale farmhouse vibe and was beautiful. I requested the most gorgeous nook in the entire place so I was thrilled when they sat us. Our server took our drink orders instantly which I was also thrilled about. I ordered an Espresso Martini which was excellent...strong and rich and very potent. But that's where my joy ended. The menu was extensive but not overwhelming. A few of us did our research and we ordered a couple of their more popular, highly recommended, signature dishes: The Rome Vacation, the Surf and Turf, the Nicholas Burger among other things. Sadly, even though the food looked great, the taste was unremarkable...all style, no substance. An upcharge wasn't available when we wanted fries instead of the chips. Instead, we had to purchase the fries separately. So many misses on the food unfortunately and really, that's what we came for.

Yelp
Great food and service. Friendly atmosphere! My date really enjoyed it too. Definitely plan to come back.

Yelp
We had brunch at Nicholas Barrel & Roost in Red Bank on a Sunday. The place is beautiful and we're seated right in front of the bar. The service was great and the server has been attentive with all our needs. One of our friends ordered the Rome Vacation Pizza as appetizer. It was okay though but not as good as the pizza I'm having with in some restaurants. I tried the Nicholas Burger which is wood grilled sirloin short rib blend served with house pickled and seasoned chips. The burger was good but the house picked wasn't what I expected and the seasoned chips are tasteless and not good at all. Some of my friends have complaints on their orders as well, my friend's eggs benedict were served cold and my other friend's side dish salad was salty. The food didn't at all live up to our expectations. I hope we can still go back here again and try the other list on their menu to at least give this restaurant a chance to gain the remaining two (2) stars.

Yelp
We were a group of six who met up for brunch. Beautiful interior, very crowded space for 11 AM. The menu is quite large but eccentric. There's brunch items and pizza and salad and also oysters? We split the Roma Vacation pizza and I started off with an espresso martini, both items were quite good. Everything else - borderline mediocre to subpar. I ordered the blackened swordfish sandwich - dry, average bread - with chips that tasted like nothing. They come complimentary with some sandwiches and I wish they didn't. I also shared some of my friends' fries, again unsalted. My friend ordered the Cajun Eggs Benedict and it was cold. The burger was average and the side salad was tangy and salty(!). Around the table, none of my friends were particularly impressed with any of their dishes, save perhaps the Not My Grandma's Crudite, an odd item to stand out on a menu packed with solid dishes. A 50+ buck per person brunch should come with good fries, at the very least.

Yelp
Brunch with friends. The place is beautiful, our spot was cool, in front of the bar by the liquors. The service was good, attentive and fast. About the food, my expectations were greater than the actual experience . Great presentation , but lack on taste or combinations. The eggs Benedict were not hot, the potatoes tasteless and the salad of one of my friend was very salty. We also tried the Roma vacation pizza as appetizers, that one was well cooked , I enjoyed it! I am open to give it another try sometime, hopefully I will have a better experience!

Yelp
I have been here a few times and would definitely recommend! My last girls night out I had the cacio de Pepe as my entree and I was very happy with my choice! It was very good! They also make an amazing espresso Martini. So if you're looking for good drinks and good food, check out this restaurant

Yelp
I went here for my birthday back in late October. Loved the ambiance and food was delicious and in HUGE portions. Ordered the NY strip and roasted Brussels sprouts. I had enough for another two meals. We also ordered the S'more dessert which was super cute and great to share. Also we loved that they offer mocktails. It reminded me of restaurants in LA I appreciate places with mocktail menus.

Yelp
I m back again. It's my daughter's birthday and all she wants is Nicholas. Mashed potatoes! I have to say Nicholas redeemed themselves . I still have the same opinion about the bread BUT OMG the chicken dish on the menu, yes chicken dish was THE BEST CHICKEN I have ever had! We went TJ France last summer and they are known for roast chicken, well NIcholas you out did them. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The shovel salad and brussel sprouts did not disappoint.

Yelp
This is my third time at this beautiful restaurant the Christmas decorations were exceptional, and there was a really good vibe when we walked in.The first time we went I had the pasta dish. Don't remember which one but it was totally underwhelming and bland. Next time we went in we all had burgers and they were excellent although you could keep the homemade potato chips I'd rather have Lays. So my third visit we all got entrées and the pumpkin soup which I've had way better pumpkin at other restaurants but it was OK. my husband had a filet mignon, which was already sliced and served on a plate with nothing else on it it was a very nice fillet, but a little dry. I would've expected a better presentation coming from such a beautiful restaurant and just a tip for the Chef a little seasoned butter on top of your steak when it comes out of the oven would've helped this fillet. I had the butter poached lobster. It was set on top of this white bland and flavorless sauce surrounded by bland cauliflower the lobster was so overcooked I had to chew and chew and finally sent it back.

Yelp
Went for an early dinner on a Friday at 6pm. Didn't make a reservation and the place was busy but we were seated right away. We were seated in enclosed porch like setting with plantings around the outside to block the view of the road and parking lot. Server was quick to come over and got our drinks and water. We ordered beet salad ribs for appetizers and the burger and short ribs for our mains. To full for dessert. Overall a great experience highly recommended and will be back.

Alina S.

Yelp
first of all it was extremely overpriced and was in no way worth it. i started with the fried pickles, the batter they used was bland and the ranch just sucked. the only flavor they really had was some spice? it was oddly spicy but it didn't pair well with the ranch, which was house made. they should've stuck to store bought because the ranch was just not good. i paid 15 dollars for a side of mac and cheese that was labeled with bone marrow and breadcrumbs. when i got it, it was the BLANDEST mac and cheese i've ever had, like kraft would've been better. the halibut was good, although it was getting cold by the time i got it, the mushrooms/ bok choy was steaming hot. the penne dish was ok. and they CHARGED FOR SODA REFILLS!! 3 dollars per soda. when the waitress asked if i'd like another i said yes because i wouldn't have expected to be charged for a soda refill, especially because i wasn't told and its not the norm, but nope, another 3 dollars. the interior was nice, and the service was pretty quick but that's about the only positive i have of this place. i was really looking forward to it since it's been there for a while and it looked like a nice place for some higher quality food. severely disappointed

Todd S.

Yelp
First time dining at this restaurant. Ambiance is very nice with a slight lean to more noisy than desired but adds to the experience. Started with fig and prosciutto pizza which was exceptional and we are very experienced on that item. Short rib entree was also top shelf, great presentation and flavor! Fried fish sandwich was average, thin filet and mostly bread but ok if that's your desire. Mussels entree was tasty and I'd say excellent flavor. About a third of mussels didn't open during cooking......here's where service was exceptional and significantly above expectations......manager took initiative and told the entire entree charge off the check, wow!! Definitely will be back to try more menu items in the near future

Yelp
I had a great lunch at Barrel & Roost. The restaurant itself is beautiful and tastefully decorated. It's definitely on the fancier side of casual, but still no need to fully dress up. I ordered the surf and turf on the lunch menu, which included a lobster roll and a (small) slider. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even the chips on the side were delicious. My husband's "Buffalo Bleu" chicken sandwich was good, but nothing special. My daughter had the Mac n Cheese from the children's menu, which might as well have been an adult entree! The portion was huge and we ended up taking most of it home (not complaining!). Overall, lunch was great but a bit on the pricier side. Service was very good.
google avatar

Bernadette G.

Yelp
My friend took me here for a birthday lunch. It is beautifully decorated with a barnyard feel. Service was great our waiter was very attentive. I ordered the swordfish which was cooked perfectly and my espresso martini was delicious! My friend also enjoyed her salad and wine. We had a relaxing lunch and never felt rushed.

Yelp
I had heard of this restaurant and was finally going to be in the area, so we tried it. Upon walking in a saw a few different rooms. The bar area and the room near it were super cute. They sat us in neither of those areas in an empty room that only had one other table, and of course they sat us on top of them. We asked to move, and they put us in a cute room that was decorated with lights and was rustic-y. Ordered a Diet Coke and my friend got a Coke, both flat and disappointing. We got the burrata, which was pretty good and I got the chicken dish. The chicken was good, wasn't crazy about the vegetables though. Our server was just ok, not overly friendly or attentive. Let's talk about the bathroom here... Literally the smallest stall I ever went in. My knees touched the door. On top of it, there was no hook or place to put my purse. Awful design not allowing any room for space. I literally limited how much water I had because I didn't want to have to need the bathroom because that's how uncomfortable I was in there. Honestly, this place was just a miss for me and a let down.

Idania D.

Yelp
NBR is always on point for us, so all the more reason to celebrate our mutual birthdays here. We have been coming here for years, including the earliest days of "Nicholas". Service is professional and attentive. Top on that list is Wendy. Food is always solid.

harold s.

Yelp
Been there many times and recommend. Cocktails always good. We usually start with crudités which is very good. Also had mussels that were wonderful however we tried pizza for first time and was very disappointed. We should have sent it back the tomato sauce and the mozzarella cheese both were dry. Either overcooked or under heat lights way too long. We must learn to sent food back that's subpar
google avatar

Mark A W.

Yelp
The atmosphere at Nicholas barrel and Rose was very classy and great decor. The service was on point as everyone was very accommodating and nice. Now let's get to the food, I had a cheeseburger with the homemade potato chips. The cheeseburger to me was kind of dry, I was excited because they use short rib to make their burgers. To me the burger was like a 93/7 burger with very little fat. The best part of the meal was the french fries and the cheese curds. I would go back again, but I would like to try some different menu items. I give my experience a three out of five.
google avatar

Rebekah M.

Yelp
A beautiful menu only hindered by the screaming children in the restaurant. I would love to come here more often. Just the thought of the screaming children past 5pm has killed the idea multiple times unfortunately.
google avatar

Jill R.

Yelp
It was a cute place, and They took good care of us when we checked in with our reservation. Our waitress, Lauren, was helpful, attentive, friendly, and great with our food allergies. The apps- cheese curds and bread /butter/ricotta board were great. Burgers and caramelized onion Pierogi were delicious, too. We will be back again-everything was spot on from the moment we came in - excellent service- even as we left, we got a greeting goodbye from The host. Parking was plentiful as well- big lot- Excellent service, great vibe, great food. What else could you ask for? We will be back soon.

Yelp
After following this restaurant on Instagram for some time, my family and I finally decided to make the trip to enjoy the beautiful Christmas decor. The ambience was wonderful and service was great. We had a few different coffee drinks and cocktails and all were delicious, you can't go wrong with the drink menu. We were there for brunch and got the toast sampler as an appetizer and I wouldn't recommend it. The bread was a bit stale and not very toasted, and I expected more flavor from the array of toppings. My boyfriend got the French onion soup which I had to try and it was amazing, a must order. For entree I got the Cajun Eggs Benedict which had great flavor but was served cold (I'm thinking that may have been the case for the toasts as well). The rest of my family ordered different sandwiches and were all pleased with their meal. The menu is large so I am looking forward to going back and trying more of the lunch and dinner options.
google avatar

Kaitlyn N.

Yelp
it was the most meh thing i've eaten, especially for that price. the pasta was basically pasta and tomato sauce. the sandwich bread was so thin. and the pizza was pretty decent, just on the salty side.
google avatar

Dawn D.

Yelp
Please let me start by saying this is a Very pretty restaurant! The wait staff is very green so don't expect top notch service, the staff would be better off in a higher end fast food Establishment. Waited at least 20 minutes for our first drink. The food is mediocre and not pleasingly plated. Remember we eat first with our eyes Chef. The prices are high end fine dinning prices, without the service or flavor. For the price we were a party of 4 and the bill was over $450.00 There are much better restaurants in the area
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Had dinner here and met the owner Nicholas who told us a bit about the transformation the place went through during COVID. It was a time to reboot the interior and menu to be more casual (forget about the dress code tips you see from its former self). With that said, the food here is still outstanding and even though it is nowhere in my backyard I know I will be back at some point. The Pistachio Dusted Mahi Mahi, Sticky Rice, Coconut Broth, Green Curry Oil, Scallions was perfect. The Bluefin Tuna Tartare, Avocado, Mango Puree, Seaweed Salad, Fried Wonton Chips was a great way to start the meal. I did also taste the Braised Octopus, Confit Potatoes, Romesco Sauce, Parsely Oil, which was done perfectly. Also, though I rarely have dessert I did manage some of the Warm Berry Crumble, Oat Crumble, Blueberries, Strawberries, Nicholas Creamery Vanilla Ice Cream! Which reminds me. Nicholas being the "serial entrepreneur" that he also has a bottle shop with an online presence, a creamery not too far away, and something to do with a winery or some such as well. Bonus: if you love bourbon, you will love the selection available here!

Yelp
My wife and I went here for an early dinner around 4:30 pm, the restaurant was pretty empty, and we expected to get in and out before the dinner rush. We were presented with the mid-day menu and we both ordered the Nicholas Burger cooked to medium figuring this would be the easiest and fastest dish to serve. As I said the restaurant was pretty empty with only 3 tables seated in the front room and after 30 minutes our food arrived and both burgers were rare/raw. Taking 30 minutes to fire 2 hamburgers is unacceptable, taking 30 minutes when the place is slow and serving them rare/raw is just not caring. The burgers were refired and were without flavor, average at best. Very disappointing as this is their signature dish. The good side - our waitress was very attentive, and the coconut rice pudding she recommended was delicious but $4+ for a cup of regular coffee? I have been here a number of times for dinner and lunch with large and small groups and each time the food was inconsistent, one dish is hot and flavorful the next person has the same dish and its cold and bland.

Yelp
Great food, awesome service and we loved the atmosphere. The cocktails were delicious. Everything was fresh. We celebrated my friend's birthday and the service was impeccable.

Yelp
I decided to check out Nicholas Barrel & Roost for the first time after seeing their Christmas decor draw all over social media--clearly part of their influencer marketing. The holiday decorations were nice, but unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the hype. The service was good, and the cocktails were solid, but the food was underwhelming, especially for the price. I stuck to a few appetizers and the burger based on recommendations as nothing was really catching my eye. The apps were decent, can't lose with french onion soup ever in my opinion, and the burger was fine--safe but unremarkable. Honestly, it felt like I was at an overpriced TGI Fridays with no jack daniels sauce. One thing that left me scratching my head was the random 3% fee added to the bill. What exactly was that for? It wasn't explained, and it just felt like an unnecessary extra charge on top of already overpriced food. If you're drawn by the festive ambiance, it's worth a visit once, but the food quality and hidden fee doesn't justify the cost. I probably wouldn't go back unless they revamped the menu since there are just far better options in the red bank -middletown food scene.

Yelp
My friend and I randomly came here for lunch today , on a Saturday at 2pm. Parking lot was very busy but without a reservation we were able to get seated right away. The host and waitress were very nice. Inside was cute, chic and very farmhouse looking .. I ordered the lobster roll with the butternut squash soup, my friend ordered the grilled cheese with the same butternut squash soup. Everything came out quickly and both entrees were amazing! We didn't have any room for dessert but we will definitely return to try more items off the lunch/dinner menu another time.

Yelp
4.5 stars - Yelp, you need to give us this option! I loved the ambiance - it's absolutely gorgeous! A bit of a farmhouse like vibe. I came in early before my gf arrived and sat at the bar. It's a beautiful wood bar with nice lighting, and the wooden floors are stunning. The menu itself had lots of interesting cocktails, and wines. It's a square bar, and a very inviting bar to say the least. I decided to take a seat at our table while waiting for my gf and took a look at the lunch menu. It was a Wednesday and there was a sizeable crowd there - lots of ladies celebrating birthdays, women's day out, etc. etc. Lots of cakes came out with sparklers on it - very festive, I loved it! We started with the toast sampler - $22 for 4 different toasts (toppings on toasted bruschetta). We also had a bottle of Chablis for $60, which is very reasonable. Then I ordered the shrimp po boy - amazing bread and the sandwich had a little kick to it! Very filling and quite delicious! I told my gf, who lives fairly local that I would 100% love to come back next time I am in the area! (I am from NJ but I moved). Lots of great options on the menu and I loved the little outdoor patio area.

Yelp
Excellent find ! Good was very good. Menu was just enough variety without being overwhelming the service from greeting to service was exceptional - will definitely return

Yelp
My friend and I went there for the first time last week for lunch. We both agreed that it was excellent. We loved everything from the decor to the food and excellent service. Our waiter was young and adorable and was a great server. Provide it was reasonable as well. We will be back!

Yelp
We were on our way back from a wake and looking for someplace to have dinner. We pulled into the parking lot and it didn't look promising with so many cars and people flooding into the place, but there were a few leaving, which worked in our favor as the man passing in front of our car motioned to us where he was parked. He pulled out and we pulled right into his spot. It was a Thursday night, but you would have thought it was a Saturday. Since we were parked, we figured let's at least give it a try, even though it was obvious this was a reservations required type of place. From the host and hostess, to the bar manager, to our server, and finally the food, it was clear this was a top notch restaurant with so much thought put into every detail, especially when it came to customer service. I told them up front that we did not have a reservation, and asked what our chances were. They said if we wanted to wait at the bar they may have something opening up soon. This is where the difference between good and exceptional came in. They didn't just point us in the direction of a crowed bar and leave us to fend for ourselves, the host escorted us into the bar area and introduced us to Conner, the bar manager. Conner had an acute awareness of his domain and although there were presently no seats available, he advised us where to stand which was an optimal spot for soon to be seating and then he came over and handed us menus to look at. I had never experienced this kind of service before and was quite impressed. We weren't there long enough to even get a drink when the hostess came and said they had a table for us as long as they could have it back in an hour. We told them "no problem". We were seated at a lovely table on the outdoor patio. Shortly after, Sam, our very experienced server, based on her friendly and confident demeanor, came over and offered us water, then a few minutes later took our drink order. Let me begin by saying we never felt rushed throughout the entire process. I honestly felt that we were in good hands and being treated like we were having dinner at our friends restaurant. We were both very relaxed and enjoying the experience. Now for the food. I ordered the organic chicken, and my BF ordered the short ribs. Our meals came out fairly quickly and both were served in large bowls, another 'first'. The chicken and vegetables were a top a bed of deliciously creamy mashed potatoes, that in itself was a winner. The chicken was moist and tender with a light coating over it and was cut in large pieces making it easy to manage. The carrots, mushrooms and onions were all cooked to perfection. I tried the short ribs from my other half's dish, which as I mentioned, was served the same way and it was also very good. Nicholas Barrel and Roost was a unique and lovely experience from start to finish and we will most definitely be back!

Yelp
Went in just after they opened. After ordering we sat for a bit and started noticing an annoying house fly that kept harassing us. Soon there were two of them. Waitress said they are aggressive today. After ten minutes of this we asked to move to an inside seat. More flies! We got burgers and lobster rolls with side of fries. Burgers were very good. Lobster roll I felt was bit dry. Fries were not crispy. Did I mention the flies? An $80 burger meal for two + flies. Meh.

Yelp
Had a reservation here the other night, waited a few minutes after we checked in. It was packed on a saturday night, the aesthetic and inside atmosphere was great. Started off with a beer, then got the grilled swordfish sandwich which came with a salad. It was delicious, definitely would order again. Dessert we got the cookies and milkshake which were great and I got an espresso martini for the first time. I'd definitely come back, just a little pricey but a great spot for a date

Yelp
Amazing ambiance, happy to have found this gem in the area. Service felt a little rushed because it seemed the waitress wanted us to leave and free up the table but there was no one waiting and place was not packed. Food was great! I got the French omelette with Gruyère cheese and potatoes and it was delicious. Portions are huge so I had leftovers.

Yelp
I went here for brunch on a Saturday. There was a good mix of lunch and breakfast items on the menu, although the breakfast items stop being served at 2 PM. I got the shrimp tacos, which were super yummy. The cocktail menu had a lot of tasty cocktails. My favorite was the melon sangria. I also got chocolate ice cream for dessert, which is made in house. The service was efficient and there were no long waits. The outdoor seating was really nice and not overly hot. I'd love to go back for dinner sometime.

Yelp
The apps here were delicious. We all loved the house made bread with ricotta and butter, cheese curds (this is a must!), and beets salad. I would certainly say apps here is the highlight. The Cacio e Pepe was mediocre at best. The crispy Brussels sprouts were not particularly crispy, would have been better if it had more crunch. I wouldn't come back for the entrees, but would definitely come back for apps. The drinks was okay.

Yelp
Arugula and asparagus salad was fantastic! Was so looking forward to the burger however after 2 attempts they couldn't get it right. Ordered medium rare. Both times burger came out medium well. I was not sending it back a third time.

Yelp
We have been to Nicholas' several times over past year or so, and have always been very happy with our experiences. Food has always been excellent, although the menu is somewhat limited. Everything that we have tried has been very well prepared and very tasty. Service has also been excellent every time we have gone. The wait staff has always been well informed and provided great recommendations. They have also exceeded expectations in terms of taking care of us during our meal. If in Red Bank, and can get a reservation, you should try Barrel and Roost.

Yelp
A few years ago, Nicholas renovated the whole restaurant and gave it a more casual theme. Hit a home run this place is really solid and consistent with original menu items and really good service highly recommend and much better now that it's more casual as well.
