"Take a trip back in time on a historian-led guided tour of this early-nineteenth-century home at the top of the tony Beacon Hill neighborhood. Designed in 1804 by architect Charles Bulfinch—who also did the Massachusetts Statehouse just down the street—the Federalist-style four-story brick pile became home in 1885 to Dr. Arthur Nichols, his wife, Elizabeth, and their three daughters, Rose, Marian, and Margaret. The family went on to decorate the house with fashionable Aesthetic Movement, Arts & Crafts, and Colonial Revival pieces collected from within New England and on their travels to Europe. A feminist, suffragist, pacifist, and a renowned garden designer, Rose inherited the place in the 1920s, after her parents died, and her salons became famous for their deep discussions about the hot topics of the day. She specified in her will that the house would become a museum, and visitors today will find it nearly exactly as she left it, filled with the furniture, accessories, art, books, and ephemera gathered by the family, and especially by her, over the decades. It serves as a fascinating portrait of an iconoclastic woman." - Elizabeth Wellington, Andrew Sessa

We had a wonderful tour (from Anne I believe) who took us through the home and gave a history of the Nichols family and the house. She obviously loves doing the tours and answered all the questions from the group on the tour. The house is well maintained and furnished in the appropriate style. Well worth a visit if you are interested in Boston history, especially about Beacon Hill homes and daily life.

We visited the last day of our trip to Boston, and this was one of our favorite museums! Liz was such an educated, kind, and funny tour guide! The picture here is Liz telling us an interesting fact about this corner, which you’ll find out when you visit 😉 Such an interesting part of Boston History! Also 10/10 gift shop 🫶

Tour was given by Liz this past Saturday. It was so personal and incredibly informative. The home and history are stunning and Liz’s enthusiasm really shines through. This experience was booked for me by a family member and I could have been more pleasantly impressed.

The house itself is beautiful and the rooms that you will visit are very well presented with a lot of items owned by the family. We had a small group of three and our tour lasted around 25 minutes excluding time in the shop! The guide was very friendly and allowed lots of opportunities for questions. It was quite a brief tour that gave you an overview of the family who owned the property and also the area and architecture but if you're looking for an in-depth house tour this one may not be quite what you're after. I'd recommend checking opening and tour times as they are quite limited. There's also a small shop downstairs too with postcards and souvenirs!

Google
Beautiful and charming house with excellent guides. We have many museums like this in the UK but the Nichols house has a unique story which was brought to life by our excellent guide.

Google
Wonderfully well preserved look into life in Beacon Hill as it was. Beautiful collections and knowledgeable guides (in particular Annalise). Small groups touring the house so lots of chances to ask questions and explore.

Very interesting. We had an almost private tour. The guide was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and eager to enlighten us with details of life at the end of the 19th century.

Yelp
This is a great historic house tour. Kara was our incredibly informative guide. She provided a wealth of details about Rose Nichols, her work, her family, the house, and the objects within it. It's about. 35-40 minutes tour.

Yelp
I had the loveliest tour today at the Nichols House. I was the only person there, but the museum's director still took the time to show me around, tell me about the house, and let me ask all the questions I'd like. What is normally a half hour tour took about 50 minutes (turns out I had a lot of questions!), but she was so gracious and knowledgeable that it felt like much less time. I'm a bit of an old house tour aficionado, and this is one of the loveliest tours I've been on. Highly recommended for anybody interested in Boston history, antiques, textiles, preservation, family dynamics, or killing a little time (so, basically, everyone).

Yelp
Just a warning, i used to volunteer here yrs ago... If you've ever walked around beacon hill and wondered what one of those nice looking houses looked like on the inside, you're in luck. Just duck inside the Nicohols House Museum. Rose Nicols grew up in that house as a girl, and never married, so she kept it till she died in 1970something. When she died, she gave her house as a museum, as is, so that people could see what the upper crust of Boston lived like. It could use a little renovating, but it is very interesting, especially to hear about her life, being friends with tons of important people, and just narrowly missing getting on the titanic. One of those hole in the wall places that havent become too touristy yet and are still fun to go to.

Yelp
I dropped by the Nichols House Museum last weekend with two friends, and ended up getting our own private tour from the museum director! Our visit lasted about 45 minutes, and in spite of my friends' initial skepticism about going on a historic house tour at all, we all ended up really enjoying ourselves. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about both the house and the family who had lived there, and was able to answer all of our questions about certain objects in the rooms and details of the former owner's (fascinating!) biography. I haven't been to any of the other Beacon Hill houses, so I can't compare, but I would say this one is worth the eight dollar price of admission!

Yelp
My sisters, Mom and I planned to visit the Nichols House after a late lunch. We had numerous obstacle and arrived just after closing. We were welcomed in and given a wonderful private tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating, and given our late arrival we never felt rushed. This was the first day of our trip to Boston and the Nichols house turned what could have been a very disappointing day into a memorable experience and gave us a great first impression of the City. Thanks Nichols House!

Yelp
A must see, not a large home, but cute home that give you an idea what other homes in Beacon Hill looks like.

Yelp
For those that have always wanted to see inside or tour one of Boston's historic Beacon Hill homes - you can do it at the Nichols House!

Yelp
Great tour! Fascinating family. Great location. I'm going to do other activities the Nichols House sponsors.
