Where to Eat in Wheaton, Maryland | Eater DC

"Open for breakfast and lunch only, this Greek-style diner has the entire family at work. If you sit at the bar stools, join-in on the conversation with owner George Markopoulos as he cooks. His father, Nick, started the business more than four decades ago. Favorite dishes include the grilled ham (sliced off-the-bone), feta cheese omelet, and home fries." - Tim Ebner

Had a FANTASTIC breakfast with my 3 year old daughter. We had a Big Breakfast with pancakes. I had the banana pancakes and let me tell you it was amazing!!! It was soooo good. Definitely found my breakfast spot for whenever in Wheaton MD. Waitress was such a delight and she was super nice and attentive. Food was DELICIOUS!! Definitely recommend this place!

Google
Old fashioned dinner for breakfast and lunch. Very good food and reasonable prices. Great service and people are friendly. All of our order are correct and came out in timely manner. Parking lot might be little small but you should able to find a spot if not on busiest times. My friends and I came here few times and definitely will come back again. If you are in the area, you should check this place out and most likely you will like this place.

Review: A True Gem of a Diner Excellent food, top-notch service, and great company—this spot checks all the boxes! It definitely brings back memories of classic New York diners. The atmosphere is welcoming, the dishes are delicious, and everything is served with care. Be sure to come early—it gets packed quickly! But trust me, the wait is absolutely worth it. A must-visit for anyone craving a real diner experience.

Google
We were greeted 3 times, warmly, by one patron and 2 staff before we were even seated. That was lovely! The atmosphere is exactly what you want in a Diner. Efficient, Speedy, Friendly, and Delicious. Oh, and the prices are good too. I highly recommend it! The home-fries are so good!

First time visiting diner, very pleased, George is extremely clean and nice, a real gentleman. The place is cute and quaint real diner atmosphere. The staff care about your personal order, cooked to order! i took home leftovers and my son another breakfast critic was impressed :-)

It was a excellent reminiscent of my childhood. Growing up in Wheaton Md Nick's Diner was a dining experience l had as a child. I'm always honest about each restaurant l review even if it's a sentimental environment. I wish when you pull up the front door was a different color than the building. Myself and another patron walked around for a while before we found the opening. I'm sure Nick's has many regulars but for new guests it's a challenge to get in. The place is smaller than l remember with that said it's definitely worth the wait. The food is fresh and cooked to perfection. I ordered eggs, bacon, pancakes, potatoes. All were cooked with love. I do wish they carried Coke products also bottled water.

What a treat it is to still have diners like this ! There has been one sitting in this location for decades, it was great when I used to go with my dad and I recently had the pleasure of seeing it still there and stopping by for breakfast after many years. I'm so glad I did! Ownership and name has changed but STILL Great breakfast !! Very attentive waitress, fun atmosphere/crowd. Been a couple times lately, loved it! Omelettes and hash browns are cooked the way they should be. I'll be back.

Google
This is an amazing spot for breakfast and brunch (maybe lunch) in a VERY unexpected place. The ambiance was very nice, the service was excellent, and it was easy to make friends! The food was phenomenal, especially the omelettes, but do remember that it can get very crowded, especially on weekends. Overall, I would recommend coming here for delicious food, nice, classic ambiance and nice waiters and people in general.

Yelp
Newly updated tables, chairs, countertop and flooring. Still the best breakfast and lunch in the area. Free and convenient parking both in front and behind the restaurant. Credit and debit cards are accepted. If you haven't been there yet give them a try. Lots of friendly smiling faces.

Yelp
This was my first time at Nick's. Met a friend here who says it's been around forever but it's been 20 years since she's been. This is old school charm in an otherwise bustling area. There is a walk up counter and 8 or so tables, perfect for a breakfast alone or with a small (4 or less) group. My friend and I found seats at the counter. The menu is relatively small, but plenty. Everyone is constantly moving behind the counter, it's really a fun sight to see. The cook is amazing with control of two cook tops, including plenty of potatoes. I got the big breakfast, which came with 2 eggs, 2 pieces of meat (bacon or sausage), potatoes, and pancakes. Everything was delightful. We lingered a bit long and were there from approx 9-10:30am on a Sunday. It definitely got busy at times with people waiting, but they were able to sit quickly. The essence is really as a quicker service place but they also didn't rush us out. I can't wait to go back! There is plenty of parking. The trick, though, the lot immediately out front was full - you have to drive towards the back along the hatched area to reveal another lot that was not full.

Yelp
Nicks has not changed in 20 years - no frills - simple breakfast food and great potatoes - again no frills and I must say the blueberry pancakes are very blue! Service is great and nice staff. It is a tired diner with no more room to do anything - it is very crowded and again it's not a tasty diner and not a silver diner - it's just a diner!

Yelp
It's a diner- no frills, simple menu, you know what you're getting. We came here for a weekend brunch and it was packed. The table seating is definitely cramped. There was a short wait, and then we were able to grab seats at the counter. They have a small parking lot, but it can be difficult to get to depending on which direction you're coming from. We were able to park in the lot next door and walk over. The waitresses were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They have a system in place to keeps things moving but organized. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes with corned beef hash. Food took a while to be brought out, but business was booming so there was a lot of hustle and bustle in the kitchen. Portions are good for the price. Service was efficient - I ordered the pancakes and it came with pats of butter, and the waitress knew to bring out the syrup without prompting. There was a generous amount of chocolate chips and the pancakes were adequately fluffy. The corned beef hash was good but not as crisp as I would've liked. Service was responsive to requests such as bringing extra napkins, and they were mindful of offering drink refills. Sitting at the counter, I had a view of their fridge and it had their canned Pepsi soda products, Ocean Spray cranberry juice, Safeway apple juice, reused Food Lion jugs of iced tea and lemonade, and other generic orange juice... I kind of wish I didn't see behind the curtain. As other Yelpers have mentioned, the bathroom is behind the counter, through the swinging doors - I thought they were joking at first, but they were serious. Aside from the menu, Nick's Diner was lacking the charms of a diner that I look for - music, milkshakes/desserts, and blue plate specials. Our experience was completely fine, just nothing special or alluring to warrant my return.

Yelp
Terrible food, bad service. The special of the day is garbage. Greasy spoon is the least of this places problems. This place is way too small everyone is sitting on top of eachother. Be wary of this place, check your bill carefully, they tried to overcharge me. Do yourself a favor and go someplace else, anyplace else!

Yelp
What a great old school diner in Montgomery County. I don't know why, but these types of diners are going the way of the dodo bird. However, I'm glad that Nick's Diner is withstanding the test of time. I stopped by for a quick breakfast and was very pleased with my food. I went with the 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 sausage, and home fries meal/combo (I forgot the official name), which was about $12.50. This definitely is the way to go if you are really hungry. Unbeknowst to me, Nick's Diner has the kind of sorta spongy pancakes, which I LOVE. The employees were super nice, and the service was pretty fast. Fortunately, I visited when the diner was not super busy. Also the price tag for most of the menu items are not super expensive. All in all, I had a wonderful dining experience. A couple of downsides. 1. The parking situation is a bit of a mess. As of now, there is only one way to enter and leave the parking lot from University Blvd. Also, a few of the parking spaces are right at the entrance near University. I assume this could be problematic because some drivers might turn into the parking lot too fast and hit someone who is backing out of the a parking space. 2. (A minor downside) You have to walk through the grill area to use the restroom.

Yelp
Great food, service and ambience. Plain old perfection. Best hash browns ever. Cute decor and happiness all around.

Yelp
I am soooooo mad that I didn't take a picture of my food it was soooooo good. I had the meat lovers omelette, potatoes, and wheat toast!! This food was sooo freaking good 10 out of 10

Yelp
This place was always on my radar, but Tastee Diner was my go to. So sadly when it closed I finally went to try out this place, and am so sad I waited so long! Overall some good diner food. The pancakes are really good. I ordered corn beef hash the first time and my partner got home fries. I immediately regretted it and now always get home fries. Service is super quick. I've only gone on weekdays so not sure what the weekend is like. There's a parking lot that usually has spots. It's a bit of a pain to get into if you're coming from the opposite way, because there's just one entrance. Overall a really great local diner!

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic food and exceptional service! Nick's Diner never disappoints. The staff are friendly and welcoming, making every visit a delightful experience.

Yelp
It's a Diner folks, as dinerey as any you have ever been in. It's not IHOP, or Denny's just a neighborhood diner. Thank God we still have a few around. Weak coffee but look that's what diners give out. No one is here for coffee. With the wife and ready to have a cheese omelette! Big portions are the rule here. Meal out of home fries alone. The omelette was good as well. Again no purpose in giving a full bite by bite. It's a Diner not a French Restaurant. Still if you want to get good plain food for 2 at a more than reasonable price. Skip the drive thru for breakfast and stop in here.

Yelp
To say it was busy was an understatement, super busy is more like it. There was a long waiting line for the tables so we decided to sit at the counter. The cooks and staff were overwhelmed with incoming orders. There was not much service to speak of, minimal words were exchanged because everyone was overworked. Fast paced and hurried ambience, not for relaxing or enjoyable atmosphere. The prices were inexpensive and the comfort food was decent. We made a mistake by not ordering the usual Sunday brunch omelettes, sausages, and pancakes. We waited over 40 minutes for two simple corned beef and Reuben sandwiches. They were okay, nothing special. The potatoes were pretty good. It was too crowded and noisy for me, but it seemed that it was very popular for lots of diners.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
It's small. The door is camouflaged bc I walked around 2Xs trying to get in. There are plenty of windows for someone to own for me. Definitely a diner vibe, busy. You can see the staff cooking, and they seemed to work on harmony without taking long to juggle carry out and attending to the customers inside. The bar area is a little tight but definitely satisfying af.

Yelp
CREDIT CARDS ARE ACCEPTED. They had to start to accept cards during pandemic. About the food: I love their omelets and home fries! Service and prices are great too.

Yelp
Friend and I ate lunch here today, first time here. It's a small SMALL little place with a lunch counter and maybe a dozen - 15 tables. Tricky parking because it's right in a ridiculous corner but we managed. I got a steak n cheese sub, the potatoes/hash were nice n spicy, good. The sub itself was very salty so I only managed a half. Friend got a cheeseburger and said it was very good. Wait staff was very friendly, personable and happy. Will come again when in the area, but ya gotta tone down that salt on the cheesesteak. A LOT.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited Nick's Diner for the first time. The restsurant is relatively small with a typical Diner counter and some tables. Parking was slightly difficult to find since there were several spots but they were all taken (it was a Saturday). I sat at the counter and was inmediately welcomed by a friendly server. I must point out that everyone was incredibly nice and efficient! I ordered a club sandwich, which learned does not come with cheese (I added some Swiss to mine), but it does have both turkey and ham(which is carved from a roasted ham sitting on the grill). The sandwich comes with potato chips, but I asked for their home fries, which are also temptingly displayed on the grill. The sandwich was generous and delicious! The home fries had a, seasoning that I could not place (chicken bouillon? Celery salt? A tad too much pepper?) that wasn't my favorite, but they were crispy and crunchy on one side. I saw that the other diners ordered mostly pancakes, omelettes and other breakfast (you get to see a lot when you are sitting right in front of the grill). But I was very happy with my sandwich and a Pepsi (no Coke products, thank God!) I will come back to try other things in the menu!

Yelp
One of my favorite breakfast spots located in the heart of Wheaton Maryland. This place never looses its touch the food here is always fresh from breakfast to lunch and dinner. Nicks happens to be my entire families favorite breakfast spot for generations now. The staff here is super friendly and profesional. If you live in the area make sure to stop by and taste the delicious menu they have to offer. Thank you for always making the Best food in Md!!
google avatar

Jadyn M.

Yelp
Good for what it is - basic diner food. Be warned that it does get quite busy on the weekends.
google avatar

Dan J.

Yelp
Chaotic from the parking lot to the counter to the phone orders, but pretty good for a greasy cheap dinner.
google avatar

Reggie H.

Yelp
Best breakfast in Silver Spring/Wheaton, don't argue with me. Service is great. It's a diner, we not here for the looks we here for the nostalgia.
google avatar

Beth P.

Yelp
This was all that and a bag of chips. Total greasy spoon with amazing employees and even better food. Clean clean clean to boot!!! Which is tough in a dinner. Kudos! To the staff. We were blessed to be sitting where we could watch the masters at work. To say I was impressed is an understatement. Efficient and effective. If you don't like tight spaces or greasy places do not come. Don't worry they will survive without you.

Yelp
Excellent service, solid food, great atmosphere. Recommend the potato bacon soup. Bottomless coffee cups. Ham is fresh
google avatar

Istvan T.

Yelp
Great old fashioned diner. These are hard to find in MoCo these days. I highly recommend that you go here if you are looking for some excellent pancakes or French toast from the griddle. They do a mean grilled cheese sandwich too. I took my kids here to show them what a real diner feels like. They loved it. From the closely packed tables with a wide variety of clientele to the down-home, old-school waitress, every bit of it is like a time capsule. The food was great, exactly what you'd expect from a diner. Don't go here if you're looking for a Ruth's Chris type of steak however, if what you want is a delicious Homie meal and a hot bowl of soup then this is a great spot in the Silver Spring, our Wheaton area. The only other spot, which I would say, is equally good if not, may be a little better, is the Tastee diner. What a long-standing, beautiful tradition. I hope these diners are here to stay!
google avatar

Martin B.

Yelp
Nick's is a small diner with tables packed close together (had to reposition my chair several times to let wait staff and patrons get past). But the food was hot, tasty and served surprisingly quickly considering how crammed the place was. We were there for breakfast, and the pancakes were terrific. the "hash browns" were amazing. We will be back.

James L.

Yelp
One of the best hole-in-the-wall diners anywhere. George can cook, and everyone is in gear. Lotsa 20-year customers they treat like family, even an occasional customer like me. If there's a line on a weekend, you can get started on your coffee while you wait. But the scenery outside the fake window frames isn't really Greece, just sayin'.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
Good food at fair prices. Came for breakfast, counter was half full and few empty tables inside. Order in and waited a longer than average time. Seems like the to go orders or small kitchen affect wait times. Staff is polite and assist with menu. Parking is plenty or in adjacent lot if able to navigate to it. Tried some normal diner type breakfast fare and it was good. PortIon size was great too. Recommend

Paula P.

Yelp
Great food, fast service, and the best breakfasts around. Especially the bacon, meaty and cooked exactly right. I will definitely look forward to purchasing again! Great staff! Very happy and, price's are reasonable.

Carlos B.

Yelp
Great food and environment. Costumer service was excellent and food was delicious. Recomendado para mi gente latina.

Yelp
amazing diner in the kensington area, you can't really go wrong with anything here. scrumptious

Yelp
This place is GREAT! Family owned and operated. The food, service and overall vibe is perfect. The structure, layout etc. are all the beautiful things that make this place unique and special. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Classic diner. I love places like this. NIck's is even better than Tastee. Definitely stop in. Fast, friendly service. Great diner food. I'll be back!!

Yelp
THE BEST BREAKFAST!!!! If you want breakfast that tastes literally one million times better than any expensive/upscale restaurant in moco, GO HERE!!! Idk what they do to their hash fries but they are the best I've ever had-- better than any place I've tried in the DMV, LA, and Southern cities. My chocolate chip pancakes were amazing. The French toast is also 12/10. Fantastic. Love you guys

AUBREY J.

Yelp
Great food and service. Simple and well done. I've gone for lunch and breakfast. Never disappoints!

Yelp
I loved this place so much! I went for breakfast and found friendly service, delicious food, and a relaxed atmosphere. I sat at the counter so I could watch them make the food and it was fascinating! It was all so fast! I got my food in no time and it was so good! I will definitely be back! Keep in mind that they are closed on Tuesdays and that they only take cash!
google avatar

Yelp
This morning I had a good breakfast at Nick's Diner. The staff is very friendly and attentive and the folks are nice. I had a scrapple and egg and cheese sandwich. Coffee too and hash browns. Would definitely do again!
google avatar

Alexis C.

Yelp
I ordered from Nicks via Uber eats , and I must say I have been missing out. I've passed Nicks many time which is a small , no frills diner located in Wheaton . . I ordered the 2 egg combo with bacon and banana pancakes. The home fries that came with the combo was top notch, very flavorful and the portion size is enough for 2 people. The banana pancakes are delicious, I mean you can literally taste the bananas in every bite . The food was packaged well and arrived before the estimated delivery time. This will most definitely be my go to breakfast spot from now on.
google avatar

Tamaria D.

Yelp
Delicious spot for sure. Very tasty and fast service. Only negative was that i asked for double bacon and they didn't give it but charged for it. Otherwise good covid precautions were taken. And u can order outside the restaurant because it's on the door

Yelp
It's always a good experience every time I come to Nick's. You'll get that small diner experience with all the comforts of your grandmas kitchen. No powder eggs no questionable meat, just good solid food. I've only come for breakfast but I'm sure their lunch menu is just as good. You can literally see them cut the ham fresh so you can believe it's quality. We generally sit in the same area and have the same server and she's always a delight. My husband usually asks for non-diary creamer and she's pretty accommodating. I love the home fries here because I don't need to add any salt or pepper. The home fries are well seasoned and come with peppers and onions in them. I've had the big breakfast multiple times because I like the pancakes here. On this most recent occasion I had the chicken breast egg sandwich on wheat for the first time and it was yummy. My husband had the ham and egg sandwich on wheat. The ham is good here for the reasons said earlier so husband enjoyed his sandwich too. Definitely come here, just be advised they close at 1 on Sundays and 3PM the rest of the week. Enjoy!

Greg S.

Yelp
Very good hole in the wall diner. If you want a no frills breakfast in a small cozy atmosphere with good food, check out nick's diner. We had the scrambled eggs and an omelette with home fries and a side of pancakes. The pancakes stole the show and that says a lot because the eggs and home fries were very good. The potatoes were done to perfection and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The pancakes were fluffy but not rubbery - they were more cake-like how pancakes should be. Server was friendly and refilled waters and coffee. Cash only pay at the counter when you leave. They have a small parking lot or you can park on street. Come early. Got here at 10am on Memorial Day and was seated right away but shortly after a long line started forming inside.

Angeline B.

Yelp
Breakfast on point, friendly and fast service love love the breakfast potatoes. Highly recommend

Glenn B.

Yelp
Went on November 6, 2021 and picked up a call in via my wife for breakfast at around 11am and there was a long hair attached to my Bacon. Disgusting.

Yelp
Remarkable as always. If you're the type to rush through life and not enjoy the simple things, skip the trip to Nick's. If you like classic diner food done right in a true diner atmosphere, Nicks is for you. Me personally, I love Pancakes done perfectly with sizzling Sausage patties and a side of Corned Beef Hash that is unmatched in the DMV, so I come to Nick's. Walk in. Grab a counter seat or wait in line and file down to the left. It's CASH ONLY so don't forget the green (atm inside). It is VERY tight but there's something cool about that. Make sure to snap a little video of the guys crushing it on the grill. You truly appreciate the god much more when you see the passion going into your food. They love to hear and see people appreciating the art of a line cook. As a former Sous Chef, I applaud these guys and tip them out before I even eat...DO THE SAME! It's a Wheaton Landmark, so just give out a shot. And make sure to tell your peoples. Nick's lives on WOM. Let's support this spot and make sure it sticks around for 40 more Years!
google avatar

Towana M.

Yelp
I only eat their breakfast and corn beef sandwich. Never disappoints and is reasonably priced.

Peggy E.

Yelp
I just had my first of what will be many breakfasts at Nick's. The place was really hopping, but all the employees were pleasant and welcoming. All employees wore masks. I sat at the counter and watched the hustle--waitresses were always in motion and the cooks never stopped! On top of that, the food was excellent. I had french toast and sausage links, which were both piping hot, and there are plenty more options for me to explore. This is the best find I've had since I moved to Wheaton several months ago.
google avatar

Reggie M.

Yelp
I will always come to this place just to get an omelette. This place is a local dive that serves freshly prepared meals. A lot of locals come here and the staff are genuinely nice. I've been here several times and I decided to come thru on a weekday to grab some grub and eat inside rather than take it home. I had the veggie omelette add chicken, some pancakes, the OJ, and home fries with bacon. Now, based on the price it's about $10 more than going to IHOP. If you do come to this place, just be prepared to pay a little bit more money. This diner is small. It's an old spot and they can use some upgrades but they're probably not concerned about it. A patron has to walk through the kitchen to go to the bathroom. The parking lot has limited space and the inside can use more room in my opinion. Will I come again? Yes. Many of us patrons said that thia place should be on Guy Fieri's DDD show.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Very quaint local "mom and pops" diner. Great service and equally great food. I wanted something quick and away from the typical chain restaurants and this definitely hit the spot. We had the reuben and the turkey hot sub and couldnt complain about a thing. Being we were in between breakfast and lunch they served it with potatoes w/ peppers and onions. Not what was expected but glad they did. Well seasoned.
google avatar

Demond S.

Yelp
Ordered breakfast delivery. Food arrived within window. I ordered breakfast meal. Eggs were fresh and scrambled as requested. Bacon crisp and flavorful home fries served with wheat toast. It hit the spot. I would definitely dine and/or order from here again. Bon Apetit.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Cash only establishment. Free parking lot next to the diner. Located across from lens crafters. This place is extremely busy on the weekends. Definitely line up early to be sure you get a seat at the diner.
google avatar

Cindy G.

Yelp
Great find on a Sunday morning! Staff was attentive and food came out quickly and hot. I could taste the Greek seasoning in the diced potatoes and it popped with flavor. Restaurant was clean.
