We were waiting for colder weather to try Nick's, and now that we have it, we went. Overall, the food, service and atmosphere were very good. Starting with the highlights, our server was extremely warm, attentive, and gracious. The restaurant is small and feels cozy on a winter night.
The beer and wine we had were absolutely fantastic, and we felt very happy with our choices (a dark lager and a light, not too dry, not too sweet Riesling).
Standouts for the food were the pork medallions with a portobello sauce, served with spaetzle and bacon green beans. Excellent dish! The apple strudel was also very good.
Bread dumpling with mushroom sauce and side salad with creamy garlic dressing were both tasty.
On the uneven side, the special lamb dish, we had to send back. We were surprised to see lamb on a German restaurant's menu. We didn't know they knew how to do lamb. Well, the short answer is, they don't.
We replaced that dish with a schnitzel with ham and cheese that came covered in a bolognese type sauce. One of us thought the combination worked well, the other did not. However, we agreed it was flavorful and well-prepared.
Our server was very apologetic about the lamb dish and very kind about the situation. We don't like sending things back and felt bad, but at the price point of Nick's, you really need to be eating something good. Fortunately, there are many very tasty things from which to choose!
