Best Roast Beef Sandwiches in Boston and on Massachusetts’ North Shore | Eater Boston

"Perhaps the best roast beef sandwich — or even the best sandwich, period. Most North Shore-style roast beef sandwiches require a plate and at least 17 napkins, but Nick’s version is — despite being handsomely dressed with mayonnaise and barbecue sauce — somehow minimally messy. The beef is pink and thin and as tender as the most tender filet. Go to Nick’s now." - Terrence Doyle

Google
Local spot for beef sandwiches. I bought a Super Beef on an onion roll. Its was good made to order. It reminded me on an Arbys roast beef but the quality of the meat doesn't compare to Nick’s. Just the make up of Onion Roll, cheese & BBQ sauce. I'd go back for sure. Restaurant is located in a corner location which can be difficult to navigate parking.

Google
Tasty, freshly sliced roast beef and a slightly spicy BBQ sauce, yum! The crispy onion rings and friendly service made this a winner!

Brandon

Google
Smallest super beef I’ve ever had. It’s a jr. on an onion roll. Do better, Nicks!

As a former longtime Beverly resident, (now living in Florida), I make it a point to get my Nick's fix every time I'm back home. I had seen the Facebook post that Nick & Nick had sold, and they assured their patrons that nothing would change, as the recipes were being passed on. I picked up food for my husband and I, and we were extremely disappointed, and the food was sub par to say the least. I ordered the same as I always did; Junior beef, rare, cheese, plain (this is how Nick's always relayed the order to the staff). "Plain" means no sauce, and I did make sure to state no sauce just in case. The woman at the counter commented "well it's not plain if it has cheese". (Maybe she wasn't familiar with the Nick's original way of doing things). Service was slow, and it was wrong. I walked back to the counter and informed one of the girls that the RB is supposed to have cheese. She questioned me a couple of times on that, then finally took the sandwich to add cheese. (And note that cheese is an additional charge, as it has always been). The fries were always my favorite at Nick's. They were overcooked and whatever they used for oil tasted terrible. We tossed them. The zucchini sticks didn't have the marinara sauce I asked for when placing the order, but I did receive them after asking for them. The zucchini sticks were OK, but a bit soggy. My roast beef was good, but not the original Nick's good. I've had much better elsewhere. My husband said his chicken sandwich was good, but not the best he's had. We had heard from others that the food was not the same, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. We won't be back.

Google
What a wonderful experience in a place voted #1 for over 20 hrs. Quick service, big portion, decent price. Def will return when in the area.

Google
One day ago, after spending my whole childhood into my adult life going to the roast beef on a regular basis my experience recently was not bad of the same. I found a place empty only two people behind the counter. Are you over the couple sandwiches and they have two chicken fingers, a four piece and a six piece I go to the six piece. I’ve got five very very small pieces and one of them was not even the size of my thumb very disappointed there. All beef was OK.

Google
Amazing roast beef sandwich! Wife got the cheeseburger. It was also good.

Google
Classic spot. Roast beef sandwich was awesome. Onion rings were really nice and lightly fried and a little sweet but I wish they were just one notch less oily.

Yelp
We drove 250 miles especially to Nick's roast Beef to try their roast beef sandwich. And yes, it's the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had. We had the "Super Beef" on onion roll which was loaded with warm roast beef with 3 different types of sauces. BBQ, cheese sauce,...and I forgot the other. And somehow they just worked. The cashier lady was extremely nice and informative, she can tell we're not locals. I thought only wagyu can melt in your mouth but Nick's roast beef can also do it. Leave your dentures at home because chewing isn't required. The restaurant has limited seating which is really the only down side. It's dining area seems to have this 80s diner feel with a lot of yellow colors but doesn't feel dirty at all. The seats, tables, counters are all very clean which is always a plus. As good as Nick's roast beef is...I wouldn't drive 250 miles again just for the sandwich but if I'm in the area within 50 miles, I'll be sure to stop by.

Yelp
Super Beef Onion Roll Three Way for breakfast at the opening. A good morning for sure.

Adil S.

Yelp
A piece of plastic in the roast beef sub. Very disappointing and disgusting. Upon informing them, the reaction was like nothing happened.

Yelp
I am NOT a fan of roast beef. That said, when in Rome, I had to try the north shore beef; and if you're going to try something, why not get the best. For me the 3-way is a tad much. Google it. After spying a couple of locals...the JR. is the way to go. I surmise that this is so the sandwich does not get soggy and is manageable. 1 is enough (with onion rings) but uh...(I ate 2). Horseradish sauce and onions were my add-ons. *The sauce is light IMO. **May want to ask for a side of horseradish sauce should you have an option to add more. BBQ sauce may also be a legit choice but I witnessed all sorts of combinations. There is a sign above the counter that lists the options- many combinations of add-ons available. Onion rings- as a connoisseur, A+...light batter, fresh and perfect. Great food, great service. Definitely will be back.

Yelp
Everything! What can I say about Nick's? If you are ever in or near Beverly, Massachusetts, this MUST be on your list of places to visit for lunch (or dinner). I guarantee you will not be disappointed. The service is fast and always accurate. However, be prepared to wait in line to order, as Nick's is small, very popular, and is usually quite busy, no matter the time of day or night. I now live in Florida, but whenever I return to Massachusetts I make it a point to visit Nick's. I only wish they had a location (or 5 locations) in Florida.

Yelp
Awful. I ordered a Super Roast Beef. Nothing super about this. It was a Big flat empty bun with a small size portion of "meh" roast beef. This cost me $11??? Not sure what the hype is about this place.

Sherry K.

Yelp
The only place I must return to in memory of living here. Still the best roastbeef sandwich!

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about Nick's. Learned about Nick's back around 2007 when my brother who attended college in the area brought us here. Fast forward almost 10 years later and, when vacationing in the area, I knew I had to go back. I remembered it being small, but it was even smaller than I remembered (or maybe I'm just bigger), but just as good -- and maybe even better. Not being from New England or growing up eating roast beef like this, I wasn't sure how to order. The staff was so kind and patient and gave their recommended order which I went with and it did not disappoint! A roast beef with mayo, bbq sauce and cheese is now my go-to for my next visit. Everything is cooked perfectly and tastes AMAZING. We also tried their zucchini sticks, which were delicious. To put it simply, you have to come here and try it out, even if you're an outsider and don't understand what all the fuss is about hot roast beef sandwiches. It will show you the light and you'll never regret it.

Yelp
Food is usually a hit or miss behind whoever is cooking. Service is superb and quick but I can't express enough how hit or miss the register people attitudes can be. Some are extremely rude and some are super nice. I was in the other night and it was extremely unprofessional for the girl at the register to bring up a break issue and start an argument with the fry guy because she "doesn't take breaks at 830", I may have completely misunderstood it and it wasn't my business really anyway but in my opinion it really shouldn't matter when you get a break as long as you get one. And all coworkers should be getting treated fairly but if there's an issue between people, bring it out back instead of doing it in front of customers, it's just unprofessional.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
The food was unbelievable I got a 3 way roast beef and I can honestly say it was one of the best roast beef's in the Northshore. Service was good it was quick and the workers were nice. The only thing was it was expensive and they didn't give me as much beef as I would of liked.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
I'm not usually a Roast Beef fan, but Nick's has converted me. This has a very "family ran" business feel and it shows in the delicious recipes they use. We got the original roast beef sandwich with everything on it. I highly recommend getting it how they wanna make it. So good! Getting into the parking lot was a little tricky since we had to cut across traffic to make the left turn, so be prepared. It was worth risking our lives for :)

Yelp
Was my go to place. Unfortunately no longer. What was once a fantastic roast beef sub 3 way, is no more. The amount of beef they give you now is skimpy, the price hike and the quality of the roast beef has taken a turn for the worst. To be clear. These comments are from my multiple experiences I had there recently and I am commenting only about their roast beef. Staff is friendly and efficient.

Maryann B.

Yelp
Never disappoints. Beef is always cooked perfectly. Chefs kiss every time. Staff is always pleasant.

Yelp
I walked in and was greeted by the friendly staff, I already knew by my instincts that this was gonna be good..... I was right! the roast-beef was so nice, the cheese was so creamy and melted and was absolutely divine.... The sub roll was so soft and fresh, I couldn't wrap my head around how fresh it was...I loved it. fries were so good..... I would absolutely highly recommend Nick's to anyone that wants one of the best subs in the north sore. great food, great staff. I will go back again when I can.

Yelp
Great sandwich shop esp roast beef must return soon great service tasty onion rings
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
Nick's roast beef is the best. Regardless of your hunger level, there's a sandwich for you. The horseradish sauce gives it a little zip too. The fries are simple, but hot and perfectly cooked. No bits and pieces either. We'll worth a try.
google avatar

Linda G.

Yelp
Hate to say it, but Nick's has gone downhill since pandemic. Funny but my friends don't go there either. Could be everyone having less meat, not sure. We don't crave their Sammies after our last couple of trips. The folks inside are still wonderful, welcoming. This is the local divey place that is affordable and gives a good value. BUT now it's not quite got that edge of draw that it used to have. Sorry guys.
google avatar

JasparLamar C.

Yelp
Nick's is a legendary north shore fast food joint and rightly so. Great quality, great slection and great service. A fifth star would certainly be earned if they cooked their french fries to completion every time. Fix that!
google avatar

Honest Reviewer C.

Yelp
This is the best roast beef I've ever. I cannot stress this enough - if you come to Beverly and don't get this, you effed up! Good service with a fun vibe. I'll definitely be back!

Massis C.

Yelp
So good! Girlfriend brought me here. I'm a California guy and she's from Beverly, so simple but so perfect!!!

Edward S.

Yelp
I'm not a local but this seems like an old school roast beef place which they did well. I got one of their roast been sandwiches with horseradish sauce and they asked me how I wanted it (medium ease) and it was great. Older place and staff and you can tell they care.
google avatar

Emiliana O.

Yelp
Nicks roast beef is awesome. Giving north shore core! Yummy stuff nice staff and great milkshakes!

Yelp
My hubby used to live in Wenham and he insists that a visit to Nick's is a "must do" when he returns home to visit. Nick's is located in a strip mall with a challenging parking lot situation. Don't be intimidated. The food is worth it. When you walk in, it's set up like an old school diner. You order at the counter, and are assigned a number. When your number is called, you head back to the counter to pick up your food. I ordered a roast beef plate -- which is still a sandwich but with sides. The sides offered with the plate are French fries, onion rings, and a salad. I asked them to hold the onion rings and got a mountain of French fries that our party of 4 shared. The food was delicious!!! While it's not on the menu anywhere (but should be!)-- they do offer gluten-free buns.

Yelp
First time visiting this north shore establishment & will certainly be back! Perfectly crafted Jr. Roast beef w more than enough meat, horseradish, onions, lettuce & tomato & crispiest onion rings! Very attentive staff, quick service & welcoming atmosphere. Stop in for a filling sandwich at a reasonable price (considering todays economic headwinds).

Lisa M.

Yelp
Love this place!! The best roast beef and real French fries. I want to get the Onion rings next. Very nice people behind the counter. Always am greeted not just how can I help you.
google avatar

Nate K.

Yelp
Nick's Famous Roast Beef in Beverly, MA has quite honestly the perfect sandwich - their super beef three way. While New England has amazing Italian and seafood - when I return here, a beef from Nick's is always my first stop. It should be yours too.

Janet B.

Yelp
Best roast beef 3 way ANYWHERE. THE BEST chicken fingers and chicken finger sub w feta. Great owners, so hard working and kind.
google avatar

Playa K.

Yelp
They got my order wrong not once but four times. I ordered a roast beef with just mayo- they gave me one with cheese. The girl suggested I eat it that way because "if you take the cheese off now it will be all gooey!" I looked at her like she was crazy and asked for a fresh one. I ordered a bottle of water, but she gave me a small chocolate shake, then a small cup of water, then cutting my losses I gave up when she gave me a small bottle when I had paid for a large one. I spoke with the guy standing next to me who had returned from his car because almost everything in his bag was wrong. ????? Too much competition to deal with this level of incompetence.
google avatar

Yelp
My last couple of takeout have not been as great as I am used to from Nick's Roast Beef. Not sure what is going on, but the roast beef sandwich does not have the same great taste I expect. Also, the French fries are terrible. I am so disappointed. The fries taste "blah". Seems maybe the oil they use is different. I detect a fishy oil taste and the fries have no taste. Please. Please. Please go back to producing the product you used to.
google avatar

Yelp
When my father was a kid, he and his brothers always ate at Nick's. It's become our family spot. Even though my dad isn't here anymore, it still feels like he's waiting in line behind me to get his two roast beef sandwiches with mayo. The beef here is exquisite. Juicy, fresh, and tender it literally melts in your mouth. The best accompaniment is mayonnaise but I've heard the barbecue sauce here is pretty excellent. I've never had it. Just mayo on a toasted bun. Their onion rings are phenomenal. They're not thickly breaded like other places, but have a thin crunchy batter that is salty and peppery. Delicious! I miss Nick's now that I'm living in Virginia. But I'll always find myself waiting in line whenever we visit. Thank you for the memories Nick and family. We miss you.

Craig P.

Yelp
There's a reason they were voted best sandwich in Massachusetts. They are fantastic ! . It's tough to drive a mile on the north shore without seeing someone selling roast beef sandwiches , some are chains others mediocre at best . This is it ! My recommendation go to Nicks you won't be disappointed !
google avatar

Craig W.

Yelp
I don't know what's changed but I'm not pleased. I got a three way large beef and I definitely felt like the beef wasn't rare enough and instead of a stack of roast beef like you used to get there was more bun than roast beef. Considering their charging the cost of a Super beef and you get a large. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. I'll give them one more shot but if they do mcScrooge thing again I'm done with them.
google avatar

Rex X.

Yelp
Who knew that North Shore is home of the roast beef sandwich? Best roast beef sandwich ever - supported by the dozen placards on the wall that all say Best Roast Beef in America. Get the Super Beef three-way (mayo, bbq, white American cheese). It's a two hand operation but globs of sauce and ribbons of beef will still fall despite your best efforts. The beef is so perfectly rare/carved so thin, you swear you can see through ir. Not enough beef? They also have a roast beef salad. Maybe get the mozz sticks instead though.

Mrs C.

Yelp
2 great Roast beef plates today! Thank you Nicks! Deliciousness! Haven't been able to get there in the last couple of years , did today & was not disappointed
google avatar

Ryan J.

Yelp
A classic for a reason. The best MA style roast beef place there is. The standard for the New England roast beef sandwich. I sometimes go out of my way to stop in Beverly and get this. As for a super beef "three way". It isn't sexual. Though you might have a mouth orgasm. It is the large roast beef sandwich with bbq sauce, mayo, and cheese. The rest of the food at the restaurant is solid and fresh. But honestly, why would you bother with anything other than that sweet sweet roast beef?
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
After a long day of travel to Boston my partner and I were craving the famous Nicks Roast Beef. It was our first time at this restaurant and we were beyond excited. As you walk in you are greeted by a team of smiling faces who are all happy to help you. The menu is on the wall and you walk up to the counter to order your delicious choices. After much deliberation we settled on two super Beef sandwiches that were all the way: BBQ sauce, mayonnaise and cheese, onion rings and a large fry. Damn. IT WAS JUST AS AMAZING AS I ANTICIPATED! The roast beef was juicy and delicious and perfectly complicated with all the sauces and cheese. The fries and onion rings were perfectly crisp. I will forever dream of returning to this place! Definitely make sure to check it out!!

Paul R.

Yelp
Clean place. Massive roast beef sandwiches. Crispy hot pizza. Service was prompt and courteous. They even gave us a couple baby slices as a free appetizer while we waited less than ten minutes for pie.
google avatar

Mac B.

Yelp
Best roast beef for the buck loaded with cheese, mayo and their special sauce. Good menu selection. They give you A LOT of fries. I, personally, am not a fan of shoe-string fries but the sandwich made up for it.

Erick P.

Yelp
Ordered the cheeseburger sub it was really good. Woman who took my order was very sweet. Highly recommend coming here.
google avatar

Yelp
Can't beat the OG Nick's. Back in the neighborhood after years and it's always good.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Disgusting I'm literally about to throw up this is gross I don't know why I ate one it is gross

B S.

Yelp
over rated, much better places to go , I found Mickeys on Elliot much better, never disappoint
google avatar

Grace D.

Yelp
I love their chicken fingers, french fries and salads. Normally, I'm not in the mood for a roast beef, but they're very tasty.

Charles K.

Yelp
Nicks has never been a disappointment in the thirty years I have been going there. While the roast beef is beyond compare, the onion rings, chicken fingers and fries are also the best around. The staff is always friendly and efficient, and the certainly know how to move a line. Two thumbs way, way up.
google avatar

Anne R.

Yelp
First time in Massachusetts and we wanted to experience a roast beef sandwich. This sandwich brought so much joy into our lives. Out of all the roast beef sandwich shops out there, we made an amazing decision to go to Nick's! I really want to go back inside rn and buy another one just so I can experience it again. Also, everyone is friendly in there it's unbelievable. Love it. Thank you!! Edit: it's been over a week and I am back home in Ca, sad and missing Nick's Roast Beef. I never going to find a sandwich shop like this back home I miss it.

Nan W.

Yelp
Something comforting about quality and menu staying the same for many years. Prices have stayed reasonable. Known and loved by all the locals. Biggest seller are roast beef sandwich with homemade BBQ sauce on good roll, generous portions. Thank you Nick's for excellence.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Sandwiches are tasty and the size is good. The parking lot is a nightmare, so give yourself extra time to wait for a parking spot to open up.

Jon D.

Yelp
I have had some good beefs here in the past, but they have since gone way down hill. How many times have I told them "onions well done, beef rare", and how many times do I get onions raw, and beef medium at best? This time was a major no no, they covered one of the beefs in sauce that was ordered and listed on the slip without it. My girlfriend hates sauce on her beef, and she didn't have a single bite of it. We called to get a refund. We explained that we couldn't come in because we drove 45 minutes each way and were not going to be in the area again soon. The Manager's response floored me. She said she wouldn't give a refund over the phone because she couldn't know if I was scamming her. Yes, she basically accused me of lying about my experience at her restaurant. This place is going to sink to the bottom of the North Shore roast beef scene if it continues to treat its customers this way.
google avatar

Cat C.

Yelp
I was visiting the North Shore and was starving. Saw this place and rolled in. I got a large meatball sub. DELICIOUS! I inhaled it. Great food and the cashiers are funny with their back and forth banter.
