Michigan’s Most Iconic Coney Island Diners | Eater Detroit

"Zef and Marija Dedvukaj are the owners of several outposts for this chain, which unlike its suburban competitors, maintains locations within Detroit city limits. The takeout-friendly spot has a huge menu to answer any hunger pangs one might have, from three-egg omelets and stirfrys to rib-eye steak dinners and the traditional coney. The Nicky D’s Special is a hot dog topped with spiced ground beef in addition to the typical chili and accompaniments. Among its locations is the former Athen’s Coney Island in Royal Oak, which features an old-style diner vibe on Woodward Avenue." - Serena Maria Daniels

Really enjoyed my visit! All the dishes were delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented. I was especially pleased that the order arrived quickly — no long wait. The staff was polite and attentive, making the experience even more pleasant. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting — definitely a place I'd love to return to. Highly recommend!

Google
I loved our waitress, she was super nice, super quick and the food was fantastic. I had the creamy Tuscan soup, it was to die for and a Michigan Cherry salad. The serving were huge and the price was good. A lot of food for little money. I would recommend this place to everyone. All the people in my party were very satisfied with everything. Thank you, it was the best!

Google
This was our first visit and we loved it! So many unique menu items, we will be back! The service was excellent with friendly staff. The decor was retro diner perfect! Very cool little restaurant that I would highly recommend! And yes, we got the Smores Stuffed French Toast!

Google
Stopped in for breakfast. Hardly anyone there, which made me nervous. The food was excellent, but I did have a traditional egg, bacon, and hash browns. There are some unique dishes. People I was with opted to share a "Fruity Pebbles" pancake.

Google
The vibe is old-school diner. Booths, counter stools, shiny metal chairs covered in red, in fact, chrome (& polished aluminum) & red are the dominant theme. After 1 p.m. and nearly every seat is full. The menus, plural, are so big - and both are two-sided - that I'm not even going to take pictures. Burgers, sandwiches, pitas, Coneys & salads on one, breakfast fare on the other. Service is quick & friendly, the prices are terrific. The most expensive thing I saw was a ribeye for about $16. Got my two Coneys for under $7 with tax included. Yummy, quick, inexpensive, what more could you want?

Tanya

Google
Corn beef sandwich the meat was old and dry. The ends of meat was dried out and hard. This cornbeef deluxe meal cost 20. Over priced poor quality food. Fries undercooked chilli thick and old. We waited 15min for this garbage. My first meal back in Michigan and I can't even enjoy it. I will never go there again. And they had a lot of business 🙄 it was pretty busy so I don't understand how you can give food of the quality and get away with it.

Google
Food was okay. I wouldn't mind coming over here again for food. The atmosphere was definitely pretty good, relaxing and family oriented. It's a great place to bring toddlers and kids over.

Lee Pickett

Google
I ordered the Texas Cheeseburger Deluxe, and I so wanted to eat the whole thing because it was so tasty, but I opted to split it and make 2 meals of it. You could easily do the same thing with a friend, and if you're really hungry, order the Double Texas Cheeseburger Deluxe and split it. That's a real bargain. The atmosphere here is fun, and everyone around me seemed to be enjoying their meals and having a good time. My waitress, Melissa, was on top of things, even though it was getting busy. Any time I'm in the area, I will be coming back, and I highly recommend this place. I came back the next and brought my wife. We shared the Double Texas Cheeseburger Deluxe. She agreed, it was great.

Yelp
The ratings are wrong. This is a charming coney that resembles a fifties metallic diner with all of the good things that come with that. I had a really really above average burger and thr photos show that the pancakes are above sinful. Simple but really great menu. Easily at least four stars Was really quick too

Yelp
Nicky's was ok, but I don't need to go back. Bathrooms are right next to the booths (I get that it's an older business, but gross). Food was good, not noteworthy; service was so-so. Our waitress forgot my toast and my husband's fries. I was able to catch her for the toast, but we never received the fries. We did have that removed from our receipt. Nothing to write home about, you'd get same quality food at any Coney Island, so don't feel like you have to go here.

Marian F.

Yelp
Food is good .. average diner food .. Salads are Great !! Especially the Greek !!!! However ! However!! Service IS VERY slow !!!
google avatar

Jo P.

Yelp
Southwest chicken omelette was tasty. Proportions were generous. Staff was very friendly and helpful as well.

Yelp
Shame on you. First you come in and say you're not going to switch the food and now youve gotten rid of everything that was from Athens. I can't find the news article in the Free press, but it quotes you as saying you aren't going to change anything. Yeah right ...... Famous last words. You guys had a gold mine with the Athens food and would have loyal customers to this day if you hadn't gotten rid of it. Well you will never get my business again. That is for sure.

Yelp
so we have driven by this place a gazillion times while on Woodward. The place looks enticing and we always wanted to check it out. We finally did!! It is definitely a Coney Island. I am not knocking Coney Island restaurants, but I expected a bit more due to the actual building. We also expected some killer milkshakes - but they did not offer any. I recommend offering an extensive milkshake menu and playing some music. The staff was pleasant and nice. Cleanliness ok. I'm sure it's a fan favorite to many, but for a first timer, I would probably not go back.

Yelp
First time! I just got the Patty Melt but it was delicious, this was a pick up order that was ready fast with pleasant staff!

Yelp
Once upon a time in the small suburb of Royal Oak, the legendary Athens Coney Island succumbed and became the latest acquisition of the eastside Nicky D's conglomerate. A few years into the new location and the new Nicky D's is receiving mixed reviews. As a long time Coney Island hot dog devotee, I can vouch for the character of these dogs. The chili sauce is thick, spicy and meaty. The onions are fresh and mild. The dogs snap when you bite them. The Saganaki is of quality goat cheese and they put a nice flame to it. My gyro meat was fabulous as was the tzatziki sauce. All wrapped in a warmed pita. A slice of Greek heaven here on earth. My wife really went to town on the Greek salad with a massive amount of beets and pink Greek dressing. They use the entire salad leaf instead of just chopping up the ribs. Lotsa feta cheese, yummy tomatoes and ol I highly recommend the chili fries and the loose burger. Always order the flaming cheese and NEVER PUT KETCHUP ON YOUR CONEY ISLAND. Along with the Greek and American classics a great reason to visit is the staff. In this small intimate building is a small intimate staff of sweethearts that really spoil you. The prices are in line and they're right on the west side of Woodward ave. 2/20

Yelp
Great breakfast, very filling and perfect, great customer service. Can't beat it thank you

Ryan P.

Yelp
Great Greek salad and always a nice staff. There Greek dressing is the pink kind which is my favorite.

Len S.

Yelp
I worked at Athens not too long after the Mitchell's took charge. At that time, there were (excluding soda), 7 things on the menu. Recently, we noticed it opened and decided to give it a try. As much as I wanted to endorse this dump, there's nothing good to say. Service sucked, the chili was awful, the loose hamburger was stale, my wife's sandwich was disgusting and it was regrettable from the minute we set foot. I was in there a few times when The Mitchell's were still at the helm. The food was very good and the attitude was even better. No wonder the Lipuma's laugh at the Nicky's people.
google avatar

Vincent S.

Yelp
They reopened Friday and unfortunately they don't have the Athens chili anymore please bring it back!

Mike R.

Yelp
It's improved a bit. Salads are better and bfast is pretty good too. Service definitely got better as well. Still not my favorite Coney dog (chili is average). But a decent place and nice location
google avatar

Eve P.

Yelp
A better than average coney in a retro diner car. Very good coffee, large portions and outstanding service.

Mayas S.

Yelp
As slow as I remembered it from years ago. When food came out after what seemed like ages, it was cold. The one redeeming quality was when we sent it back, we got a hot dish in under two minutes (I timed it). Also we had a revolving waitress staff, so there was no one person we could leave a tip for. Food was relatively decent though

Yelp
This is a tough one for me as I grew up eating at the original Athens Coney Island and was less than happy about the Nicky D's acquisition. All and all though, in spite of my trepidation, Nicky D's is really a very solid coney / diner and I recommend it. Any time a restaurant chain acquires an existing icon like Athens, I would imagine it is difficult. I am sure that Nicki D's, which has a number of other locations, has its own menu that it usually brings into a new restaurant. What they did here, which was brilliant, was to bring their menu but retain a number of the original Athens staples. So, if you still want your Athens Coney Island just the way it was, you can still have it. The chili cheese fries are still unbelievable, only now, they are HUGE! Prices are in line with what I recall from the old place. In terms of food, I highly recommend all of the usual bad for you coney stuff. The Greek Salad is solid. I also think that the club sandwich is among the best in the area. The breakfast options are all solid if unspectacular. At the end of the day, Athens Coney wasn't really the same after the remodel for me anyway and the folks from Nicky D's have done nothing to detract from that experience. I am still a regular, albeit not nearly as regular as I used to be in the old days. If you are looking for your Athens fix, don't hesitate to make a run here. Nicki D's will scratch the itch!

Yelp
I'm not sure what's happening with the other reviews, but I've been here a couple times lately and have zero complaints. As far as coneys go, this is a quality coney; the restaurant is clean, service friendly and quick, menu is standard and well-priced, and the food has always been freshly made and good. This is basically our go-to coney from now on.
google avatar

Billy L.

Yelp
We stopped here while getting ready to go Christmas shopping at the Somerset Mall. We just randomly chose this restaurant but it turned out to be a good choice. The prices were good, service was good and I enjoyed the food. They serve breakfast anytime and we both got breakfast at lunchtime. I got my usual veggie egg white omelette with tomato slices and rye toast. My friend got 2 eggs with sausage and pancakes. We both enjoyed our meals and would go there again
google avatar

Beth B.

Yelp
Very friendly server but I'm sorry to report, the food is not great. The menu is not large like the rest of the coney islands around here, it's about 2 pages + 1 breakfast. I asked the waitress how the spinach pie was, she said it was great and said it was homemade. It arrived and looked promising but unfortunately tasted like it was made several weeks ago with the top crisped up before serving. The waitress was nice enough to ask how I liked it, but when I said I didn't really care for it she annoyingly let me know that she's never heard that in 52 years. I guess people must really like soggy, mushy spinach pie in this neighborhood. I like mine like Boukie's in Royal Oak, fresh and delicious. The chicken lemon rice soup was pretty good with larger pieces of chicken than usual. My husband enjoyed his coney dog and fries, so if you go I'd recommend that.
google avatar

Maureen S.

Yelp
If I could give it zero stars I would. I found a dark hair in my salad and Coney. I was Very turned off and I didn't even touch my Coney because I was sick to my stomach. The waitress honored my request to refund my bill. Thank you. But I won't ever be back.
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
We come here often for breakfast on the weekend. I got the omelette with spinach, onions, tomatoes and feta. It's really tasty, but for some reasons they forgot the feta, which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. Other than that I really enjoyed my breakfast. They are very accommodating and customize anything you order.
google avatar

Russ H.

Yelp
When this place was Athens, it was the best Coney in metro Detroit. Now? Meh....its okay. I really can't say anything is bad. It was just amazing before. They destroyed the iconic sign, and the quality is good. But it was great before. Staff is friendly and helpful and still my usual Coney, but now just because it's the closest. When the original owners left, all the character and personality went with them.
google avatar

Morgan A.

Yelp
Typical diner. These look like the diners they have back in NJ, which was nice for me! Came in on a Saturday morning, sat ourselves. We were greeted quickly by our waitress with coffee. Took our order promptly and the food came out quick. This is definitely a place to pop in for a quick breakfast. Not sure about their other food, but the breakfast was good.
google avatar

Syd R.

Yelp
Obsessed!!! The waitresses are SUCH sweethearts and always SO nice to our two boys. The food is good, I'd say better than most coneys. The Greek salad is out of this world - it's all about the pink dressing people. This is our go to spot if mama bear doesn't feel like cooking dinner aka we are here 1-2 times a month on a weeknight.
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
Zero stars if I could. I just walked outside so I didn't scream at a waitress after finding a bug in the salad. I pointed it out and was asked to "next time say it a little quieter". Another waitress walked up to inform me that "lettuce grows in the ground". You've got to be joking me, the amount of condescending garbage for a salad. I don't know where you find these people but keep them out of restaurant service for the love of god. Absolute garbage.
google avatar

Jim O.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch after an outing with the Grandkids. I had a cheeseburger and fries which was fantastic. The kids had Mac and Cheese which was home made and outstanding and my wife had a Club Sandwich which she said was good. I will most definitely come back
google avatar

Tony S.

Yelp
If you are like many Detroiters and love a good coney dog, DO NOT go here! Worst dogs I've ever eaten, literally tough to chew. (?) Topped with Red Onions (??) and a soggy, wet bun. Steamed is one thing - wet it something different. I won't even get into the rest of our meals - this should explain it all. If you screw up a coney dog in Detroit - you're out. Stay away from this "Nickey" Mouse operation.
google avatar

Luigi C.

Yelp
We've been going to Nicky D's other locations in metro Detroit for years. All I can say is thank you very much for opening one closer to where we live . They always have Incredible breakfasts (steak n eggs) great portions as well , excellent Pita sandwiches, crispy fries ,,, and one of the tastiest Chicken Greek salad around, the Pink dressing is ridiculously good. Reasonable prices, service is good. We've had the pleasure of meeting the owner, very cool guy. Congratulations and welcome to the area. This is the place for Real good Comfort food , see you again soon. Luigi C.
google avatar

Catherine O.

Yelp
If you have "fresh fruit cups" advertised on the board above the register, clearly visible when entering, they should actually be available if someone orders them. "We don't carry those most of the time," our waitress said. Don't advertise them, then. If I order coffee at breakfast, I shouldn't have to ask twice and wait five minutes to have a refill. I shouldn't have to wait ten minutes after my and my husband's (greasy) omelettes are served for my two-year-old son's pancakes to arrive. Ugh. Bad day, I hope - I liked Athens a lot and want to see this place do well.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
I've only been here one time when I met a friend who works in the area for lunch. Huge Greek Salad fan and always on the look out for one that stands out above the rest. Amazing!. Perfect pink Greek salad dressing and deliciously seasoned chicken. Only thing ,in my opinion, that would make it better would be the addition of chick peas. Still giving it a 5 out of 5!! Looks like they stay open fairly late so will definitely be making a trip back for dinner sometime soon!
google avatar

Cori H.

Yelp
Recently gave this Coney Island a try and can almost guarantee I won't be back. The staff was inattentive and gave off the vibe that they had much better things to do than serve your table. The eggs that I ordered were too greasy to be edible, and the sausage that went along with them tasted like it was expired... it was all disgusting. When cashing out, an employee asked me how my visit was. After expressing to him that everything was sub-par, he didn't seem concerned at all, not asking any further questions or offering to try to make things right. If looking for good Coney Island food in this area, I'd suggest driving down the street to Leo's in Birmingham.
google avatar

Nick T.

Yelp
Said you guys closed at 3 I got here and watched you like lock the door and stare at me as I pleaded shaking your head no, I'm not even trying to fine just trying to get carry out. You guys are seriously fucked up. Better not see you walking down the street
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite coney's. It seems they have new management or ownership. The staff is unrecognizable and the woman running the show is rude. I sat with a friend near the door and heard her poke fun at another woman's looks. Old manager or owner was always pleasant and seemed to care about customers happiness. Food was good, although we will not be back!
google avatar

Suzanne F.

Yelp
My adult son and I went here for breakfast and it was delicious, but the service wasn't quite as good as I'd like. We had trouble getting the waitress' attention though when we did, she helped us without a qualm and was very nice and friendly. My son's steak was a little undercooked and they gave no argument about replacing it with a correct one. We live right down the street so we do carryout often, and it's always ready when they say it is. Highly recommend for just about anything on the menu, but esp like the Greek salad and pancakes (real blueberries, not frozen or sauce).
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
They killed Athens. I still went for a few years after the change but now have completely given up. The chili is bland and everything basically tastes like it was bought from the lowest bidder. I have no idea of how you screw this up, but these folks certainly did.
google avatar

Sabrina C.

Yelp
Dude, I don't expect over the top service at a diner but MAN these people are rude. No thank you, no have a nice day. I did a carry out order for an elderly woman, and when I asked the guy if they understood her special requests ok, he shook his head, told me not really, and acted completely annoyed and put out when I asked to fix it. It was like he couldn't believe he HAD to deal with someone as horrible as me, I was incredibly polite and patient! I was totally shocked. They tossed the food back on the counter silently and I just smiled and said "THANKS SO MUCH GUYS!" It was SO slow, chill out. Too many Coney Islands to go back to this one again, thanks.

Amy R.

Yelp
I wish I could give a negative star....went for breakfast on a Sunday. It was busy but not slammed. My husbands coffee cup was dirty - like food residue left in dirty - when he asked for a new cup the girl said oh don't worry it's just stained. He showed her the food and she brought a new one. When our food arrived there was a short black hair on my plate (I'm blonde). We informed the waitress we were leaving and showed her the hair, she brought a manager over who said "I guess you can leave" after seeing the hair and hearing about the cup. She clearly didn't care. Never going back.
google avatar

Matt J.

Yelp
Austin T must of been in a bad mood. This place is bar none the best coney place in the try-county. Stay in NC Austin T

Yelp
Well I won't be back. This place has been around as long as I remember. I worked here for the Mitchell's in the 80's as a kid, and I've eaten there every since. Now today I went with my son and ordered a child chicken finger with fries. It came out with 2 tenders and about 2 cups of fries. No problem. He was still hungry so we asked the waitress if we could get a couple more tenders but she said she couldn't so we ordered another kids meal. This one came out with 3 tenders and the fries covered the entire plate and were so over cooked they could not be eaten. Garbage basically. When the server came back I questioned the different number of tenders and she shrugged and said " I think it only supposed to be 2". No problem. I also showed her the half plate of inedible fries and she said she would show the manager but threw them right in the trash. Nice way to lose a 40 year + customer.
google avatar

Greg C.

Yelp
Not as good as when it was Athens. Lemon rice soup was so thick the spoon stood up in it. Cheese on Coney was cold, pinkish and creamy, looked like thick lobster bisque. The opa was good though.

Doug R.

Yelp
Service was fine however food was not so good. I did not think one could mess up eggs. My omelette had burnt sausage links in it. Not really that edible. My hash browns were under cooked - tasted like a raw potato. $10.21 for breakfast - no juice. Not that cheap either.
google avatar

Victoria H.

Yelp
I am quickly Becoming a regular here, I work down the street. The girls are awesome, the food is outstanding and quick. The manager is so sweet every time I call she knows exactly what I want!
google avatar

Shawana W.

Yelp
The food was good however the credit card machine goes out and no back up system. Was left at the table waiting then had to go to atm major inconvenience customer Servicio could've been more considerate for their issue

laurin p.

Yelp
We were surprised by the name change but we're keen to see if it was the same quality as Athens. It's not. The service is much less attentive. We saw the waitress exactly four times- to take the order, to deliver the food, to bring the check, and to bring back another menu. My daughter ordered an omelette but it didn't come with any cheese despite Swiss cheese being listed on the menu. Everyone makes mistakes and it wasn't even the waitresses fault. However, we were unable to get the waitress's attention away from her phone or talking with her co-workers long enough to signal her that something was wrong. When she came with the check, I told her that it was missing the cheese. She said that it wasn't supposed to have cheese, but agreed to bring me the menu. What was listed? Cheese. Notice that I didn't put anything about refills. There were none. When my daughter ran out of water, I refilled her water glass with my water. Short of yelling across the restaurant or walking up to interrupt their conversation, we were at a bit of a loss on what to do. My omelette was decent but the experience ruined it.

Laurie D.

Yelp
Went in sun at 3:33 for a late lunch and was told they are only doing carryout! They are supposed to be open until 4 pm. If your hours are till 4 then serve your customers till 4 in your restaurant and not carryout!

Yelp
I used to love going to Athens Coney Island. Did so for over 30 years. Started in the old, tiny place and then the newer big joint that hung the same old pictures. I had them cater bachelor parties, super bowl parties, birthday parties. I raised my boy on them. We all loved Athens. For some reason, they sold the place to Nicky and he changed the name. I will never understand that. Early after the sale he said they would not be changing the recipe, but I think they did. The chili tastes and texture seems different to me, good but still different. The hot dogs are good. The buns fresh. I have had a few meals here and they use white onions on the coneys, not as others claim. The fries are terrific, especially dipped in chili. Service is always top notch. Overall it's a solid good place, even with a new name. .
google avatar

Susan R.

Yelp
Been going here 15 years. New owner and food is awful. Won't be back.

Mary K.

Yelp
Wow great place to eat. Best service and really nice wait staff , very clean and fast. Food is fresh and the cheese cake the best I've had in my life . I recommend eating here for any occasion family friendly or a great place to take a date .

Yelp
My wife and I used to live in the vicinity of this coney island restaurant and remember it fondly. Much to our dismay, we arrived 10 minutes before the posted closing time only to find the "closed" sign lighted and the door locked, although the interior lights were blazing. My wife knocked on the door and was told by one of the three staff people that "Everything is already shut down." I would have been happy to award a higher rating but wasn't given a fair chance. Maybe we'll have better luck the next time -- probably a couple of years from now.
