I hope to update this review soon... Because I don't like knocking down small businesses especially mom and pop businesses.
I was very excited and eager to try this place, I would see the glowing yellow awning on my way home every night for the past 2 weeks. I says to myself "self... You need to try this food, it looks like the mom and pop food you love" --- I read the reviews and with 4+ stars I said, ok, It's ON!!! And when I read it was Guyanese west indian, I said oh HELL YEAH!!! I grew up around a lot of Guyanese in NYC and NJ, and I love that type of food.
I ran in there this past Saturday around 2:30pm (12.03.16), I literally ran in there while my car was double parked. SO many delicious looking choices --- I was ready to pounce on a curry goat, but I said maybe that's too heavy and I don't want to get the 'itis and fall asleep haha. Plus I saw the curry chicken for a lunch meal was only $7 bucks --- and it comes with your choice of white rice, rice and peas, rice and beans or cookup rice, ANNNND your choice of plantains or cabbage - What a deal!!! Since this was such a deal I said I can still get a drink and a beef patty without breaking the bank, hopefully all under $10 bucks - cant beat a nice hearty meal, sides and a meal for that price.
Well, this is where things go south... The chicken was curried chicken breast, which hey, huge chunks of breast for that price is one solid deal and lots of delicious protein. However, if you are used to West Indian food, normally the chicken curry consists of the top part of the drums, and thighs --- the bone and fat from the dark meat gives it a whole different flavor. The very nice owner told me it was still cooking, so since I was double parked I went for the chunks of breast. I got myself a patty and a cream soda, and my meal that I thought would be $10 or under, worst case $11 and change, turned into almost $16 bucks --- HOW!? The meal is $7, the patty is $2 and the bottled cream soda shouldnt have been more than $2 either --- I didn't have time to contest this, I was double parked and had to run.
I get in my truck, and start chomping at the fresh looking beef patty --- it was kind of cold, very very disappointing. Now this is where the 1 star comes into play... MY PATTY HAD A STAPLE IN THE MEAT!!! Yes, a metal STAPLE in the meat! I thought it was a bone, when I spit it out, it was a have bent staple... I was in so much damn shock, thinking "what if I ATE THIS!?" lol would I have died, I don't know, never in my 35+ years of life have I ever been confronted with such a gross or scary situation. I was already half way home, and honestly I was starving... I says to my self "self, maybe the curry will make it all worth it, mistakes happen --- a very crappy mistake, but hey maybe this chicken will erase all your shock and awe"...
The chicken was extremely dry, this is why I dont like breast in my stew, or curries or even soups... After awhile if you dont eat it fresh, the breast gets really dry and becomes a chore to chew and swallow. The curry was meh, there wasn't enough flavor, not enough zing! The rice however was AMAZING! The red beans and rice was moist, fresh, and delicious. The cabbage seemed more like a garnish than a side...
I wanna go back and try the oxtail and goat... and that fish. I know this sounds crazy, and it is... I normally do not ever go back to a place that scares me or that totally sucks the life out of my foodie soul. But I hope you guys @ nicole's reads this, other people may not be so lenient or soft when it comes to finding a sharp metal object in their food --- it's downright scary!!! I wont be eating the Beef or any type of patties again. But I do wanna give this place a chance again with their Fish, Goat and Oxtail --- places like this in NJ are hard to find, and I don't wanna go all the way to Queens. Hopefully I can update this review, and sing a different tune :/
