6 Underrated North Charleston Restaurants to Visit Now - Eater Carolinas

"Nigel’s Good Food is a North Charleston staple. Every dish is made with a down home feel, hence the use of its “just what your soul needs” slogan. The food became so popular that the owners opened a second location in Ladson (9616 Hiway 78, Ste 11, Ladson, South Carolina 29456). But no matter which location, make sure you order Nigel’s very popular Geechie Wings. They are battered, fried, and tossed in a homemade sweet and sour wing sauce." - KJ Kearney

Have heard so many good things about this place and finally had the chance to check it out today. 1st class service from the minute I walked in to when I left. The menu is abundant but I chose the fried chicken platter with mash, gravy, corn and green beans which was incredible. Highly recommend. Definitely going back soon. 3 Thumbs Up & 5 Stars from me.

Google
Nigel's is a small Southern Soul food. The food we order was 16.95 a plate and included one meat and 3 sides. For a lunch plate, I believe is high, but I do know that Charleston, SC., prices are high, period. Some plates are 21.95 in some restaurants. The prices are ridiculous everywhere, so high prices is a standard here, so 16.95 is a little lower than the 18 to 20 dollar plates I've seen out there that are just abusive. The inflation here is real. I ordered the Stew Chicken with Red Rice, corn, and collard greens. The Stew Chicken is tasty and on a blackish, brownish gravy. It was tender and good. I wouldn't rate it the best, but it was definitely tasty and edible. I ate all of it. The corn was standard yellow can corn with butter. It didn't have anything on it, no pimento or other, but I added Texas Pete which I'm glad they had. They have no hot house made sauce btw, and that was sad for me as I like my food spicy. The collard greens were alright. I ate them all, and they were nice and warm with bacon pieces. I say alright because I don't like when they add sugar to the collards. I like them with butter, garlic, and salt. I could taste a little sweet in them. But, they were fine, and I still enjoyed them. I'm just sharing my preference. The Red Rice that was supposed to be a staple to South Carolina was not what I expected. It came cold. I get it. They don't want to over mush their rice each time they warm it up, but it also wasn't the Red Rice I expected with sausage, celery, cilantro, and pimento. I was just not a fan. I tired their mash potatoes in my daughter's BBQ plate were amazing! I highly recommend the mash potatoes, but they needed more gravy as the gravy was limited. The BBQ chicken was also good for bbq lovers. I am not always crashing bbq sauce, so I didn't enjoy it, but she gave me some, and she said she loved it. She also loved her macaroni and cheese. The server helping us was kind. We appreciated him. The timing the food arrives is not the best as if delays quite a bit, and the restaurant is not too full, so prepare to wait a while. Our food took like 40 minutes. The server said the chef makes the food fresh. All in all, we had a great time! I would recommend it.

Google
The location in Hanahan started out really strong with great food, service and portions. Picked up my order tonight and the pork chops are significantly smaller than all the other times I’ve purchased. When I asked the staff about it their explanation was “we got a new food distributor” and I requested they compensate for the portion decrease and was told it would be an up charge. Respectfully, it’s not my fault as the consumer that they have a new distributor! I’m extremely disappointed and will never return! If you are expecting the same food and portions as when they opened you’re in for a rude awakening!

Google
Extremely disappointed. We arrived and stood at the front desk waiting to be seated. After 3 minutes of watching two gentlemen in the back look at us, I finally walked back and asked do we need to wait to be seated and his response was “you can seat yourself.” Not sure why I had to ask but oh well. We sat down approximately 2:45pm and the young man didn’t take our drink order until 3:00pm. He took our food order at 3:05 and we didn’t get our food until 3:40 (almost an hour later). The portion sizes were small. Our fried chicken consisted of a leg, wing and thigh and our BBQ chicken was two wings and a thigh. The greens were room temperature (not hot at all) and the cornbread was hard on the bottom and not cooked in the middle. We will not be going back and I would not recommend.

Google
Good food, though don't know why some other review said the wings were huge. Sweet tea from Lipton but sure is sweet. Got the meat & three with country fried steak, sides of okra soup, collard greens, and Mac n cheese. Also got an appetizer of Geechie wings. Think this southern soul food tastes nice, little tang in the soup, guessing from mustard seasoning, and a little pepper in the collard greens, but overall pretty mild flavors. Or maybe they just meld well. Not overly salty or the like.

Google
So we arrived and they didn't have any chicken or yams. Lol a soul food spot without that. Well they had pork chops and fish. The pork chops were perfect along with the red rice collards and Mac and cheese were awesome. The fish sandwich was good also.

Google
The staff seemed to be having a great time but it didn't hinder the quality of service - it added to the joyful, soulful atmosphere. Both the service and food were fantastic (the okra soup was amazing). At first glance, the sides seemed a little light but I couldn't even eat it all. My daughter said she was sad when she finished eating because it was gone... we aren't from the area so, it will be awhile before we return. However, we're going to tell everyone we know to make sure they add this place on the list.

Google
It was pretty good. I had the whiting and they really give you a nice piece of fish. One of my friends had the chicken fried steak and she said it was very good but the potatoes were very thick when she put her fork in it. It almost crumbled like cornbread. Other than that the food was good. We did taste the wings which I liked. They remind me of KFC's honey barbecue wings which I loved place was very crowded. They do a good business. Only thing is they're not Open on Sundays and their meals just seems like a nice Sunday meal

Yelp
Ok Nigel's I found you on a whim and you did not disappoint. Setup is pub style with a row of booths along either wall, a big table in the middle and some seating at the bar. I went in on a busy Friday at lunchtime so it took a minute to sit and order but actually wasn't that long and I got my food pretty quick. Sipping the sweetest tea I've ever had I heard some music faintly it was Snoop talking about something or other. Got my plate of meat and 3 sides when Sade came on and I thought dang I wish they'd turn it up. Do you know what they did next? They turned it up. I was in heaven that food was so good. The chicken came in hot be careful! The greens were not overcooked, the yams were voluptuous and the cornbread was diverse and flavorful. They kept Sade going my entire meal then I paid and got to walk out to MJ Human Nature. Staff is obviously cool asf. No catfish on the menu but I'll live.

Yelp
We came for the first time today March 28, 2024. We were greeted quickly by Sarah. They were out of sweet tea, but I read that they serve Kookaid. Soooooo we ordered peach, lemonade, and peach-lemon. Listen.... If you did not grow up sipping on Koolaid, you will not understand how tickled I was to have a cup, and it being like we were kids again! . Good job on having that on the menu. We ordered oven baked ribs, whole fried chicken wings, collard greens, fried cabbage, yams, Lima beans, cornbread, and Mac n cheese. NOTE TO CHEF: they were out of cornbread for a couple of days. Set 'em straight because folks like that cornbread! We were fortunate to get cornbread today. The playlist had me grooving and added to the vibes. It was not busy so we didn't wait too long for our food. First: the Geechee wings should be renamed Geechee Wangs. Very flavorful because that sauce is eeeerrrryyythang! I wanted my wings well done and they came close enough that I won't complain. The ribs were ok. Someone put the sauce on and it continued to cook. The sauce was delicious on the ribs, and the rib was falling off the bone. But for the sauce that was crushed on the rib, they would be perfect. I would absolutely order again, but perhaps earlier in the day. The potato salad was Perfect! The Lima beans were PERFECT. The cabbage and collard greens were seasoned like only a soul food restaurant could season 'em!! PERFECT!!! The yams were done....PERFECT!! I wanted more but that was my inner Phatti talking! The fried chicken was hot and good! Nice scald on the wings too!! The cornbread was BUSSIN!! (That means it was good!!). It was the sweet cornbread! The bread pudding did not have raisins so I opted for the banana pudding. Now, everyone does it differently. I like mine layered with vanilla wafers-bananas-pudding.... There were only wafers on top. No problem! It was still good. Great spot to eat! We will return when we visit family in the future (if we don't cook!). #DraytonStrong #norelation

Yelp
Really the name says it all. Consistently good service, good, and atmosphere. If it's your first time, try the wings!

Yelp
Nigel's has been around since at least 2011, and they've grown to 3 locations now. You cannot beat the genuine Southern soul food here. The collards are always perfect and vinegar based. The geechi wings are a real treat and a must try with unique seasonings and fried to a crisp, yet very moist and tender chicken wing.

Yelp
Not sure where all the great reviews came from?!!! Service was fine, but the food was very mediocre. One server was sweeping and then rolling up the rugs! I read the shrimp and grits were amazing, which is why we went .... Not! We got four dinners. Chicken with Mac & cheese and corn bread, fried green tomatoes over grits , the geechy wings and shrimp and grits. Nothing was remarkable. It's not that it was bad, it just wasn't like the reviews! Really disappointed.

Yelp
I've been to both Nigel's good food spots. I love their fried chicken and collard greens and mac & cheese is awesome. Food proportionate is just right and the prices are within reasonable. The only complaint is both places the waitresses seem to have forgotten where I was sitting and I had a long time to wait to place my order. To be fair at both locations were short on Help. I recommend anyone who wants to try out some good soul food. This is the place to go.

Yelp
We have tried the Nigel's in Summerville, but this was our first time at this location. They did not have everything pictured on Yelp, but if you google the exact location you are visiting you can see their direct menus for those locations. Once seated we ordered drinks and I ordered a side of baked Mac & cheese to get my two babes started on while we decided and our food cooked. They ate it up!! We also ordered the geechie wings as an appetizer, and omg they were sooooo delicious! So plump and juicy, yet crispy and the sauce is somehow sweet and savory with just the right kick all at once!! Get em!!!! We wanted to try a lot, so we both got meat and three plates. My husband ordered the fried chicken and then mashed potatoes and gravy, the collards and Lima beans as his sides and I ordered the baked ribs okra soup, yams and Lima beans as a side. We didn't realize we both ordered Lima beans, but glad we both did, because honestly these were some of the best beans period that we've had! I could've had Lima beans and geechie wings and been perfectly content lol! The okra soup and collards were delicious too. Then everything after! If you want you some good ol' southern/geechie cooking, don't hesitate on any of the Nigel locations. They know what's up! Now to build one in West Ashley lol!

Yelp
We got delivery after hearing raves about the good ol' Southern Home Cookin' here. I want to dine in to update later but for now I base it on our delivery. The chicken-fried steak was momworthy. Good gravy on it and the potatoes. A little skin in the potatoes lets you know they're real. Creamy, buttery, and perfect. The mac'n'cheese is better than assembly line but not as good as home-baked trays. I was missing the cheesy char on top. The sauce was tangy with Cheddar and quality cheeses, not just canned. Good, not great. The red rice was the big disappointment. It was about an hour before closing so I have to guess it was the last of the batch, but it was totally dried out, almost but not quite burnt. The smoked sausage was all smoke, no sausage. The rice was so dry it fell into individual pieces. It was a lot, they filled the giant area below the steak, but more is not better when it's not good. That said, the Geechie wings were spicy-sweet, sticky and saucy and well-cooked. And the lemon tea was bangin' with tangy flavor and is a must-order! Together these two are a perfect lunch.

Yelp
We stopped in here on our way to the Cypress Gardens. This place was delicious! Our server was so sweet and they were even playing Courage the Cowardly Dog on a TV which I love! They also played super good music. The food was so flavorful and very filling. The mac and cheese was so delicious I cant even describe it. So was the Po Boy, very flavorful. The cornbread was so sweet and buttery and not dry at all. I definitely reccomend!

Yelp
The gheechie wings were the best. Our party ordered the Lima beans over rice - one of the most popular items on the menu (huge let down). We also had fried chicken barbecue chicken, Mac & cheese collard greens and yams. I wish I could say the food was better than average. The banana pudding was also less than average. On a positive note the sweet tea was very good. The customer service was great.

Yelp
I went here in CONFIDENCE solely based off of reviews. The chicken wings were re-fried and out in just 8 mins. I LOVE Mac n Macaroni Cheese. This by far was the me WORST Mac n cheese ever. And I had the nerve to order 2 orders. It was more like noodles and cheese curds with absolutely NO FLAVOR. Spent 64 dollars for reheated food and cold sides. I'm from out of town, so I don't know if the location I selected had anything to do with it. But I'm disappointed by the lackluster value of what was given to me for dinner. The customer service was dry and bland. I hope they reignite what initially made them. Go back to the drawing board and redesign the way the food is cooked and presented. Better yet, I wish they'd try and eat what was served to me. Do better.

Yelp
Ordered the stewed chicken, okra, Mac & cheese, & cornbread. Stewed chicken was incredibly tender. When it came to the table, I thought they'd given me some sort of baked chicken. Usually the stewed chicken I've had has been in gravy of some sort. The cornbread was MASSIVE and was light and sweet. Okra was very flavorful and would have been great with some white rice. I don't come up to Charleston often, but when I do I definitely plan on stopping. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures before I dug in.

Yelp
Very very poor & rude customer service ! Will never return here again ! Everyone has a bad day but never show that to customers ! Have had pleasant experiences before at this and other location so highly disappointed . Food was subpar but Chicken was fried to perfection and was really good, so that's the reason for two stars .Ambiance is relaxed and chilled .

Yelp
Stood there for 15 minutes with some other people to be sat and was ignored. There were plenty of open tables that needed to be bust. Staff just ignored the door of 5 or so people (3 tables with). Got fed up and left no one even made eye contact with me. Food looked and smelled good, but I'll never go back.

Yelp
Place was a little small but made it feel cozy. The food was amazing chicken fell off the bone.

Yelp
Alright y'all let's talk soul food...real, unadulterated no frills attached, stick to your bones, god on my plate southern hospitality, food for your soul. This place is it guys, look no further than Nigel's and you're welcome in advance. Don't be put off by the unassuming exterior, once inside you feel the love and warmth in each bite. The staff was on point! Food came right out and our waitress Giovanni was so accommodating, not to mention the owner took the time to personally stop by each table to check in on everyone's dining experience. Talk about southern hospitality! My only regret is we forgot to take pictures of the food. We ordered sweet tea because...well why not, and it was just as good as any sweet tea I could have made myself. Mom had the white fish, I had ribs and Hubby had country fried steak. Sides were collards, Mac and cheese, fried cabbage and corn bread. All spot on! If you are from the south and know soul food, or have never experienced real soul food, then this place must be added to your list if ever in the Charleston area. Oh and we finished with the warm bread pudding, regrettably again so good that we never thought to stop and take a pic.

Gwendolyn B.

Yelp
Service was excellent Food was excellent ! I even had some left overs so the portion size was on point. These were some good pork chops and don't forget the peach tea

Yelp
Great new family restaurant in town. Wonderful food cooked to perfection. Indoor & outdoor seating. Nice bar. Excellent staff. HURRY DOWN & beat the crowd. I've been to his restaurant off Cosgrove oops (MY MISTAKE ACTUALLY OFF ASHLEY PHOSPHATE RD ) & can't wait to go to his BBQ place. We had some of his BBQ given to us from a friend. Delicious & collard greens to die for thank you for sharing BROOKIE! I will be back for another visit!

Nick S.

Yelp
Disappointed in everything. Wish it would've been better. No collards at 6pm Chicken was way overcooked and dry Mac and cabbage...‍ Sad face

Yelp
Visiting Charleston for the weekend and stumbled on Nigel's through a Yelp search for nearby places. I ordered the geechie wings, stewed chicken, Mac n cheese, yams, & greens. Unfortunately the food was very underwhelming. The flavor of the wings weren't fantastic, and they weren't hot at all. It tasted like they sat up there until the rest of our food was done. The "stewed chicken" was just baked chicken with brown gravy thrown on top. Can't say that I was a fan. The Mac & cheese was fairly good. I would say it was the best thing. Our toddler doesn't even eat mac & cheese and she ate about half a bowl. The yams & greens were okay the first few bites then I quickly became disinterested. I definitely don't see myself revisiting, but I wouldn't steer anyone away if they want to try it. It just might be your thing.
google avatar

Samantha S.

Yelp
The food was hot and fresh. The cleanliness of the restaurant and restroom were not the best. However, we did visit late so we were a little lenient. The customer service was subpar as it appeared it was limited staff.

Robert E.

Yelp
Poor experience! Soul food restaurant on a Saturday night ! Out of ribs ,turkey legs , yams , green salad , greens ! No sugar jfree syrup. Although chicken and waffles was not bad , serving on a plate would be helpful instead of a small plastic container. ( Also cut back on the wings from four to three ) Unacceptable! Will be a long time if any before going back . Too many choices to go to and settle for this Rating 2 stars at best

Yelp
I don't even know if it's possible to put into words how good the food is at this place! The fact that it's named good food tells you everything you need to know. The gumbo is absolutely mind-blowing phenomenal! I've had it several times and I've never ever been disappointed. You get a lot, a lot so, so I hope you're hungry! The place is usually pretty busy but I've never seen it so packed that you had to wait for very long. And you can always get your stuff to go, which is what I usually do anyway. Also the Gucci wings are highly recommended

Yelp
This evening I called in an order to Nigel's for my favorite stew chicken. I was told that it would be ready in 10 to 20 minutes. My husband waited about 30 minutes to go pick up my order. The order was not ready. Then, they told my husband that they were out of stewed cabbage. My husband called me and reluctantly after telling my husband a substitute that they were also out of I told my husband to just pick something that they had. So, he comes home with okra soup and white chicken. I was floored when I saw that the chicken wasn't cooked done. I called the restaurant and no answer. Check their app and it said closed. There is blood draining out of the chicken. This is horrible. I have never been served chicken this raw and of all things they had the nerves to put gravy on the raw chicken.

Yelp
We were greeted upon entry and advised to sit anywhere. Our server brought over menus and took our drink orders. I previously reviewed the menu and was ready to order for a change... I ordered the Geechie Wings, Fried Cabbage, Mac and Cheese, Red Rice and Cornbread! My friend ordered the Pork-chops with the same sides. It didn't take long for our food to come. It was hot, fresh and tasty! My cornbread was firmer than I liked and my server immediately brought me another piece that was soft! The Geechie wing sauce does remind me of a Mambo Sauce I tried in DC! Everything was flavorful! Portions were good and I had leftovers. My friends meal was more cost effective as it came with meat and three sides but I ordered the Wings (Appetizer) and all my sides were a la carte. O... The ranch is good but the Blue Cheese was even better! I definitely recommend & will return when able!

Yelp
You walk in to a low lit setting with booths nestled along the walls with a few tables down the center. It feels more like a bar than a restaurant, in fact. The aroma of the food hits you even before you get to your seat--and that's a true calling card for a soul food restaurant. I can't lie, I "eye stalked" the patrons at other tables; I saw chicken and waffles, turkey wings and a table of four share two orders of bread pudding. You ever ate something so good, it made you put a hump in your back over the plate? Well, that's what these four are doing. No one is talking, all of them look like camels as they lean in and devour that dessert. This is just heightening my anticipation for our meal. Oh, and everyone...and I do mean EVERYONE had sweet tea on their tables. See, I just assumed it was "regular" sweet tea, but this right here is that grandmama's secret recipe kind of sweet tea. If this beverage is any indication of the meal, then, hold tight until the meal arrives...just wait right here, sweetie...I will be right back... Let's start with those Geechie wings. That sauce is unique. It's not a specific flavor but a conglomerate--smoky and tangy...if this sauce were on some ribs, whew Lawd! Per the suggestion of the waitress, the crab and shrimp ravioli was the only way to go. We paired it with cornbread (that I swear looked like a slice of cake), okra soup, and lima beans. Now the okra soup comes with high expectations. My husband had it made for him from scratch from a family friend that was born and raised in South Carolina. She has spoiled him because he first experience with this okra soup now comes with high expectations. Now this is good with the equal flavor and spice of one made in a family kitchen! But those Lima beans...smoked meat with seasoned beans...it was more like meat with a side of lima beans! They were bursting with flavor and the only thing bad I can say about this is WE SHOULD HAVE ORDERED MORE! The cornbread became a battleground at our table. I wanted more, but since we only ordered one--I had to share. Don't be like me; order your OWN..it not only LOOKS like cake, it's also moist and soft like a cake. The true star of the evening was that dang crab and shrimp ravioli. Look here, I can't even find the words to describe this dish. Everything you want in a meal ALL AT ONCE happens with this meal--creamy whiskey cream sauce and cheese raviolis that comes chocked full with shrimp, crab, bacon, corn, and tomatoes. My, my, my!!! This dish alone can keep this place in business for years to come. We have found our favorite place and we will probably be back tomorrow (and the next day too)!

Yelp
The food was okay. It was hitting the spot like Monday thru Friday dinner. It wasn't hitting like Sunday dinner. The flavors was basic. I was told the one in Ladson is allegedly hitting like Sunday dinner. I will have to go check it out and let you know which was better. I didn't try the banana pudding. I gave it to someone else since the texture looked watery to me. I wouldn't go back to this location. If you can't cook or you lazy this the place for you.

Yelp
Continuing my desire to support local last week, I had fried green tomatoes on the brain and headed to Nigel's. It was 3:30 PM on a Saturday and the place was packed!! I was happily excited for them!! I mean who eats at 3:30??? I got a spot at the bar and ordered a beer, fried green tomatoes, three sides and a slice of pecan pie. I still have a fridge full of leftovers but I tried a bite of everything and it was all amazing!! One thing that didn't make it to the fridge were the fried green tomatoes. They were soooooooo good! Crispy, hot, seasoned perfectly which made the green tomato pop. I really want more right now! I can't wait to enjoy the rest this week. If you find yourself near one of their CHS locations, make a point to stop in and enjoy.

Yelp
Some of the best food soul food I've ever had. This is a hidden gem and a be must try! Very friendly service and the portions will definitely fill you up plus. This is always my stop when I'm craving southern soul food.

Yelp
If you like cornbread, collards, chicken and dumplings or country food, Nigel's is your kind of place! Not only is the food good but the service is excellent, you don't have to wait long and the atmosphere is not fancy but a "come as you are" welcoming kind of place. Give Nigel's a try. You'll be glad you did!

Pam T.

Yelp
My husband and I have eaten there several times, the food is always excellent. I really enjoy their stewed chicken and my husband likes the pork chops.

Yelp
Such a sweet and easy going atmosphere with true Southern hospitality. Thank you staff!! We had fish, Turkey wings, fried chicken, smothered chicken, and ribs with the sides. The portions were plentiful, seasoned to perfection, and the corn bread was buttery. It's a small restaurant and the wait can be long if you arrive after 6:30pm. They have a full service bar if you like to drink.
google avatar

Frank P.

Yelp
Nostalgic ! I frequent the Ladson location. Always good food with great service. Most time I get the fried chicken mac & cheese, collard greens. Can't go wrong.
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
Best wings in the country. You'll want an extra order. Sides are the best. Get the Greens and Mac and cheese.

Kim G.

Yelp
Huge portions. Tasty chicken. Both fried and barbecue. Mac and cheese disappointing. I'm so shocked to see people say the mac and cheese is good because I'm like wait, this is what I drove 9 hours for? Could have stayed home and made this better. Collards extremely salty. They didn't give the okra soup we ordered as a side nor did they reimburse us. We would give 7/10.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
WOW! This may look like a hole in the wall place, but it is a hidden gem! This good totally blew me away. I can say the ravioli was easily my favorite - although it is definitely a heavy comfort food style dish so I cannot order it frequently. Not pictured is the cornbread that I devoured before photographing - it was so warm and buttery and just incredibly delicious

Yelp
We found this and it was quite the find! Located in a little shopping center, it's not terribly large and was full most of the time we were there. I had the gumbo with shrimp and sausage, cornbread as a side. Very good gumbo! It was a lot of food but I finished every bit! Husband had meat & 3, including red rice (very good), collard greens, and gumbo soup which was his favorite! Also had steamed chicken (they were out of ribs, sadly). Service was prompt, friendly and helpful.

J M.

Yelp
Food is pretty good, but not great. Ate there twice because it was close to where we were staying. Both times it jacked my stomach up so not sure what thats all about - food handling/prep...? Folks are friendly and its easy to get to and grab and go.

Yelp
Wow amazing tasty food. The wings are the best I have even had. My whole family agreed. The fried chicken, bacon ranch burger, green beans, Mac and cheese, red rice and grilled cheese were off the chain. Service is fast and the server was super sweet. She even knows our home town Shelby Nc. Folks DO NOT sleep on this place.

Yelp
Lovvvvve this place! The fried green tomatoes are probably my favorite thing on the menu, but that's bc I don't eat meat lol I've taken my Ma here a few times and she's really enjoys the fried chicken with rice and beans. And the yams, ohhh man! They're so delicious they're on the verge of being like a dessert! Just a heads up: every time we come here it's always great service. Depending on how busy it is though the food could take a little while sometimes, but I promise it's worth the wait!

Yelp
This was the best soul food I have ever had! I had the chicken and it rivals my Grandma's. The banana pudding for dessert is a definite must have but be prepared they are generous with the cereal bowl of pudding they brought out! You definitely need to make sure you have a big appetite as the portions are huge! We had a fantastic server who was so patient and answered my many questions! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Nigel is good place to eat especially if you don't know what to cook or if you don't want to make dinner. The food is amazing. The service is definitely amazing as well. The workers are really nice and they make you feel welcome. I highly recommend Nigel's to anyone that's visiting Charleston

Yelp
Great food, service and vibe. In town for meetings and decided to grab a early dinner before heading off to the airport. Looked up soul food and Nigel's was a top hit. The ratings don't lie. My experiences was soooo good. I ordered pork chops, baked mac & cheese, fried cabbage, red rice, with a side of cornbread and brown gravy. I'm so dang full with happiness that my belly is swollen. I dove right into the plate before I thought about taking a picture. But trust you're going to enjoy this one.

Yelp
The food gets a five and after all that is why you go to eat. It's real soul food in a soul food atmosphere located in a strip mall. It's very busy but service was good and expect a bit of wait on your food. It's worth it when you get it. The whiskey shrimp was one of the best dishes we have ever had! The shrimp was fresh and the sauce well I've been trying to figure out how to make it! Don't miss this dish! We went for lunch around 2 pm on Saturday and due to demand they were out of some sides . The mac and cheese is very good and tastes like Sunday supper caliber. The fried fish and scallops were perfect in taste , and not over breaded . Every bite of everything we had was wonderful and plenty servings . No it's not fancy interior but a fine value for what you receive!! The tartar sauce is the best , so good and taste homemade .

Yelp
This is a great spot for good old home cooking. The 3 fried pork chops were great and more than what I thought come with meal. The collards were very good. The Lima beans were seasoned well. Mac and cheese was great as well. The staff was friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Great soul food! Can't go wrong with the fried chicken. We got the Okra soup, Turkey wings, mac and cheese, collard greens. Lima beans was one of the best! They have 3 different flavors of Kool Aid to wash it all down. Bread pudding and naner pudding for sure.

Yelp
A nice hole in the wall. This is my first exposure to southern food in SC. I dont know what to compare it too but I thought it was pretty good. Just a very standard small business with big flavors. I ordered Nigel's fried chicken and it came with 3 BIG pieces of fried chicken and 3 sides for $12. That has to be one of the best deals in town. I spent just as much money as eating the sad chicken at Bojangles. Fried Chicken came out piping hot. It was super juicy and had ton of flavor. 4.5/5 Mac n Cheese was slightly disappointing. It was pretty standard and nothing special. 3/5 Fries- not much to say Cornbread- at first glance looks very (in my perspective) but was perfect amount of sweet, moist and the crispy edges had nice texture. It was a great way to wrap up my meal!! 5/5 Overall: This was a great little place for lunch. It wasnt busy and was seated right away. The server, he was really nice, attentive and prompt. I liked the small menu of items very easy to decide what to order. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone!
