70 New Restaurants and Bars That Have Opened in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"I tried a West African restaurant highlighting Nigerian cuisine where owner Maria Onisemo and her mother cook dishes such as jollof rice, fried yams with spicy sauce, savory stews like egusi and stewed okra, and soups ranging from goat meat to spicy fish soup—bringing Nigerian home-cooked flavors to a storefront." - Candice Woo

Nigeria Breeze Restaurant Bringing West African Food to National City | Eater San Diego

"I'm looking forward to Nigeria Breeze, which is aiming to open by the end of the month in National City and hopes to widen the spotlight on West African cuisine. It will be owner Maria Onisemo’s first establishment in the United States, though her family has operated restaurants in Nigeria; she and her mother — who will serve as the head chef — moved from running a private catering business to sharing their regional family recipes. The menu is anchored by jollof rice (a tomato-based rice dish paired with chicken and plantains) and includes efo riro, a spinach-and-pepper stew; egusi soup, thickened with ground melon seeds and served with starchy pounded yam or fufu; and asara, a savory yam porridge. The operation will occupy a 1,788-square-foot space in the South Bay, plans to be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., hopes to offer beer and wine in the future, and envisions eventually franchising into malls and hotels to help bring Nigerian food more into the mainstream." - Candice Woo

This was my first time trying Nigerian food, and I’m really glad I stopped by Nigerian Breeze. I ordered several items, including the fish, igese, spicy beef, plantains, and a meat pie. The fish was amazing — the flavor and texture were absolutely on point. It was cooked perfectly and easily became my favorite dish of the night. The spicy beef definitely lives up to its name; it’s very spicy, so if you’re sensitive to heat, I’d suggest skipping that appetizer. The plantains were perfectly cooked, sweet, and flavorful. The meat pie was delicious overall, though it had a bit more bread than meat. I would’ve loved a little more filling, but it was still enjoyable. Overall, I’m really happy I came here and tried something new. The atmosphere is great for a date or a relaxed meal — plenty of seating, no overpowering music, and a comfortable space for conversation. I’d definitely come back and recommend it to anyone curious about Nigerian cuisine.

Google
I had an incredible experience at this Nigerian restaurant! The food was not only flavorful and authentic, but the quantity was so satisfying — you definitely get your money’s worth. The quality of every dish truly stood out, from the seasoning to the texture. Whether you’re craving jollof rice, egusi soup, or peppered meat, everything was cooked to perfection. I dined in and also ordered takeout, and I was impressed both times. The packaging for the takeout was top-notch — secure, neat, and still hot when I got home. The service was just as amazing — warm, professional, and attentive from start to finish. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a true taste of Nigeria with excellent value and top-tier service. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
First time trying this place and Nigerian food and I loved the experience. Authentic Nigerian dishes and the service was really great. During our stay we noticed a lot of clients coming in to purchase to go. I strongly recommend. My son even used his hands to try the fufu. The portions are very big, enough to share and actually spicy but not too spicy.

This was my mother and I’s first time coming to this restaurant and trying this type of food and we were very pleased with our experience! The food was delicious and the service was great, very friendly people! Highly recommend!!

Google
Huge shoutout to the owner Maria for the amazing hospitality and food! We came in right before a rush, everyone came in and ready to devour the delicious food! Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in SoCal!!! We literally couldn’t decide which of the dishes we liked more! This is a must try!

Google
I got the egusi soup w beef, fufu and a beef patty. The fufu was my favorite of the dish. It was my first time having Nigerian fufu. The egusi has flavor but not much soup which was a big disappointment esp for the price. The beef in my opinion was over cooked but still good. I’ll most likely do chicken next time because I’ll certainly be get it again. The beef patty huge the dough was thick again my favorite part 🤤 definitely needs a little more moisture inside of it kinda dry but overall in my opinion legit place

It was my first time eating Nigerian foods. I enjoyed it very much! 5 of us shared some suggested dishes. They were very kind and helpful with suggestions. The spinach stew with fufu was my favorite! I'd come back!

Google
I visited this restaurant with my wife and our 1-year-old while in town, hoping for a great experience. Unfortunately, from the moment we arrived, the service left much to be desired. My wife noticed a rude stare from the host (a dark-skinned lady with braces), but I encouraged her to overlook it, assuming it might have been a misunderstanding. During our meal, our child, as toddlers do, made a bit of a mess—some rice and crumbs of meat pie fell on the floor. Instead of handling the situation professionally, the host came over and rudely said, “I’m going to bring a broom for you to clean this mess.” At first, I thought she was joking, but it became clear she was serious. Before leaving, my wife and I made an effort to clean the table, as we would anywhere, but we didn’t pick up the crumbs from the floor—something that is standard for restaurant staff to handle. As we were leaving, I thanked the host, but she ignored me. My wife then apologized for the mess, and the host responded in a hostile manner, saying, “This is not nice at all.” Beyond the poor service, the food itself was disappointing. The efo riro tasted spoiled, and the pricing was too high given the experience. I always aim to support Nigerian businesses, and this review is not meant to defame but to encourage better customer service and professionalism. A welcoming attitude goes a long way in making customers feel valued, and unfortunately, we left with a bad taste—both literally and figuratively. We won’t be returning.

Yelp
Hidden in the corner. We wanted to try the fufu and egusi so we gave it a try. It was good and very fulfilling, beef was a little chewy but the red sauce on it was really good. Super flavorful and spicy. The jollof rice was spicy as well but also very Smokey.

Yelp
Absolutely, recommend Nigeria Breeze restaurant. I usually order their Egusi with beef, efo Riro with beef and pounded yam (fufu). It's so authentic, delicious and worth every penny! Portion is decent; it usually last me two days since I always order both dishes together. Food and fufu is always fresh! I recommend this restaurant to many of my family and friends, they all had a great experience as well. Thanks for reading my review, have a wonderful week.

Yelp
I'm not even done and I neeeeeed to tell the world how good this is. I got the Efo riro and extra fufu and this is EXACTLY what I needed on a cold day. I got it to go and it was steaming hot still when I got home and got settled in to eat, the spice is so warming and good... if you haven't been here you're missing out. The service was excellent, they're so friendly and eager to explain everything. Come here!!

Yelp
Delicious food! I have been missing the food from from Nigeria and this food brought me back to those memories. 10/10

Yelp
We entered less than 30 minutes before closing. The server was patient and explained the menu to us. The meat pie was yum. But rest of the food was so tasty and same time so so spicy. It was level 10 spice. More than highest Thai or Ethiopian or Indian food from Andhra. Szechuan will taste like piece of cake. It has no after effect like other spicy cuisine. No stomach ache, no diarrhea. You just have to tolerate the extreme heat for 30-50 minutes. After that you will feel cold. With Nigerian music in the background, the host and the servers were always smiling and helping us out. Excellent and prompt service, i am all in for authenticity but it may be a tad too hot for many. Wish they had a scale of 5.

Yelp
This was my first experience with Nigerian food! Fortunately I had some help from a friend with what to order. We ended up getting a few dishes but the ones that stuck out was the jollof rice and efo riro stew. Unfortunately they did not have any fufu so we had to get the pounded yam. The food was freshly made and the main thing to watch out for is how spicy it was! It's not my favorite type of food but it is a great experience. Unfortunately it is located in a sketch part of national city, but it's okay once you are inside!

Yelp
Walked in on Saturday and was greeted by the sound of Afrobeats, a super friendly waitstaff, and the smell of everything good coming from the kitchen. Being my first time here, I'm keeping it simple and going w the fufu and egusi. It very much hit the spot. For me it was the perfect amount of spice. You feel it but it doesn't blow out the palette. Definitely looking forward to coming back when I'm in town. Thanks Nigeria Breeze!

Penny L.

Yelp
I was really disappointed by this restaurant. The service was kind, but the food was awful. It was comically bad in all honesty. It felt as if they intentionally gave us food that was stale, bland, tough/dry meat, and rice that seemingly had been made from a box and reheated under lamps multiple times. It was like eating at a nursing home. I am sure Nigerian food is delicious elsewhere, and maybe it just depends on what you order. I just won't be returning, which I'm disappointed about. I really wanted to like it. I hope you have a better experience than we did.

Yelp
First time trying Nigerian cuisine and it was a good experience. Although I have nothing to compare it to, my Nigerian friend comes here often and speaks highly of the place. I've always been curious about fufu so I ordered the goat stew with fufu. Very flavorful dish loaded with spices and overall an enjoyable experience. Service was great, it's a family owned restaurant and the owner was very kind. Would've never expected to find this cuisine in National city, it's kind of hidden in the corner. Support your family owned businesses!!

Yelp
My sister and I came here because we've been wanting to try fufu for YEARS! We ordered 2 fufu, egusi stew and beef patty. We devoured it! Not a crumb in sight. The flavors and spice were perfect. It's nothing like I've ever had before we're excited to go back and try other things. The ladies in there were super sweet and our food came out fast.
google avatar

Leslie Denisse V.

Yelp
A bit pricey but definitely delicious and flavorful. Very authentic. Employees have been sweet every time I go

Wynesha K.

Yelp
Staff very kind, ambiance was a chill and comfortable atmosphere. The meal was packed with flavor and was amazing. I got half egusi and half Riro (I think it's spelled) with beef and comes with fufu. The food was fresh and juicy and tender beef was great together. The spices were on point and not too spicy. This was my first time here and first ever having Nigerian food. I'll most definitely come back. Perfect meal. It's a must try if you're in National City which has some of the best food!!! Periodt iykyk

Leanne S.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Nigerian food and it did not disappoint. The service was great and everyone was checking in on us which was nice! I was excited to try the fufu and Egusi with beef. The Egusi wasn't too spicy and it paired well with the fufu. The meat pie was delicious and the crust was buttery. I would definitely come back to try the other dishes!

Jalisha C.

Yelp
I ordered the Efo Riro Stew with goat. It came with fufu for $27. When I arrived I wanted to order the mini combo that's advertised online but not reflected in the in store menu. The young lady didn't understand me so I just opted for the stew. I have never had this before so I asked her for her favorite meat add on as a recommendation. She simply read off the list to me and said she's had all of them. I said ok I'll just go with the goat. Service was quick but unfortunately the stew was luke warm and the goat was hard and cold. It was also a small portion for $27. The fufu was hot and fresh. I know based on taste it would be delicious if the goat were more tender and edible. I'm disappointed.
google avatar

Marina A.

Yelp
they have the kindest staff & great food, I have zero complaints. Loved it! Also I didn't have the meat pie in my photo but it was delicious and the reason there's no picture is because we ate it so fast
google avatar

Simone C.

Yelp
We ordered chicken egusi stew with fufu and jollof rice with chicken. The food must be an acquired taste because it was awful..The chicken was old and rubbery, and the rice was too smokey and dry. It taste as if it was burnt. The egusi stew was too fishy for my taste. That was a total waste of $65.
google avatar

Zyanya Y.

Yelp
Wow. Our taste buds were in heaven!!! My husband & I just dined here at Nigerian breeze, & we will not stop raving about it with each other. The jollof rice was a perfect blend of spices that created a rich, smokiness that lingered with each bite. We also ordered the Egusi Stew with beef which was bursting with flavor. The blend of textures & bold tastes captured the essence of Nigerian cuisine wonderfully. 10/10 would recommend. We are already planning our return visit with friends & family.

grecia m.

Yelp
Food and service was amazing, we had the fufu and egusi stew with goat meat. it was so flavorful!! The woman who took our order checked in on us more than once and made us feel so welcomed!
google avatar

Arlene B.

Yelp
I was excited to try something new and ordered the egusi stew with fufu, but unfortunately, it really missed the mark for me. The flavor and smell were extremely strong--honestly reminded me of manure. I usually enjoy trying different cuisines and have a pretty open palate, but this was a tough one to get through. Maybe it's an acquired taste, but I personally couldn't enjoy it.
google avatar

Danny P.

Yelp
Never again. Three of us got sick after eating their dishes. Very slow service. Very EXPENSIVE for what you get. Poor Quantity and quality. Needs more care

Hilary H.

Yelp
The food was excellent! First time trying Nigerian food and it exceeded our expectations. The service was fast and they were very sweet people! We got the Jellof Rice, Efo Riro Stew, and the Egusi Stew. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
Came here for the first time with my friend and so glad I did. The woman who took our order was very nice and very helpful with her suggestions. I ordered Efo Riro stew with fufu, fried plantains and the meat pie. It was so flavorful and just really good. I can't wait to go back and try more.

Menelika B.

Yelp
Food was astoundingly delicious ! Had Suya, jollof rice, plaintains and meat pie. Did NOT have to ask for hot spice as it was THERE in the Suya ‼. Only wish there was a jollof rice, plaintain & Suya combo as ordering a la carte is expensive.

Reyna N.

Yelp
The food is super savory and delicious! You can taste all the spices. Come prepared to get your hands dirty.
google avatar

Allison L.

Yelp
This place was amazing! I'm glad I tried it and it ended up being so good. We got the beef egusi with fufu. The flavor was great, came with lots of beef. The price for the one dish was a little steep at $23 The side of jollof rice is $10. Nice, smoky flavor. Came in a big bowl. Will be back!
google avatar

Ernie G.

Yelp
I ordered the egusi stew with fufu on DoorDash, the food was so flavorful and the perfect amount of spice and smelled delicious. I tried a different restaurant before for my first time and it was a bad experience for me, I saw the good reviews here and decided to give Nigerian food another try and I'm so glad I did.
google avatar

Bravo IG _foodiebravo M.

Yelp
I definitely was so happy to try their food. The meat was a tad bit tough yet super delicious. Portion was good and I had enough for 2nd serving.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Ordered Egusi which is $25.00 w an extra 2.00 for the goat. Which equals 27.00 right? Maybe $3-4 extra in taxes. Tried to charge me an extra $25.00 in addition to my $27.00 plate!! Total came out to 63.00 for one plate & her excuse? "taxes" and that's "just her prices" Told that woman to have a goodnight and walked out. Hate when folks try to get over on you! Scammers.
google avatar

Yesenia E.

Yelp
Came to try Egusi for the first time and Fufu. Let me tell you it's so bomb and the service was amazing. Mother daughter duo is so beautiful because they truly care and ask how you liked the food and explain to you what pairs together. Truly felt like family.
google avatar

joslyn s.

Yelp
It was my first time eating Nigerian foods. I enjoyed it very much! 5 of us shared some suggested dishes. They were very kind and helpful with suggestions. The spinach stew with fufu was my favorite! I'd come back!

Kyle T.

Yelp
Forgot to take a picture but I paid $25 for the beef stew and I was served a large trey of white rice and small cup of soup that didn't even cover half the rice.. this place is a over-priced rip off
google avatar

Ro N.

Yelp
The food was good but I didn't know it was that spicy. I ordered some egusi and beef with some fufu and jollof rice. The jollof rice was hot but flavorful and I enjoyed it alot the the egusi and beef where hot and the beef was a little tough the fufu takes on the flavor of whatever you pair it with. Having tried the two dishes I would say the jollof rice would be the only thing I would come back for being that the food is a bit hot for my taste. Customer service was good just a little misunderstanding on the menu on what comes in the combos.
google avatar

Nicole J.

Yelp
I've never had Nigerian food before. This was my first time. So you know you can take this with a grain of salt. I don't care. I placed the order online and I placed it about 30 minutes before I wanted to pick up. I got there 32 minutes later and I still had to wait 10 minutes for the food. The inside is really loud. There wasn't a lot of people though. It's just the music. So I got my food and I get home. I ordered fufu and egasi, meat pies and a side of jollof rice. There is no jollof rice in the bag. So $10 down the drain. The meat pies are burnt on the bottom so you can only eat the top and the inside. They taste good though. The fufu reminds me of mashed potato. The egasi is kind of good. The chicken that's in it is shredded but it's really dry and at one point I thought I was chewing on a bone but it was actually the shredded chicken. It's pretty spicy. Would I go back? No. I might try another place here in town and see if I like it better.

Jenna D.

Yelp
Pricy but delicious! Definitely will come back when I have a craving again for the okra stew.
google avatar

Erick M.

Yelp
This was my 1st time here, and I was blown away by the flavors in the food. My daughter and I like experiencing new things, and Nigeria Breeze did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in, the ambience was inviting. The staff was very warm and friendly and helped us with the menu and assisted in making great choices. The dishes we ate told us a story. The smokey flavor in the Jollof rice, the heat from the spices in the Ognobo stew (and dipping Fufu in it), they told us about where they are from and how great flavors transcend distance. We will definitely be coming back!

Scarzilla478

Yelp
Me and my girlfriend wanted to try this because of the tik toks we've seen people liking it... Oh my how bad this mistake would turn out. Paid $80 dollars and was missing two fufus from order. Along with the food tasting HORRIBLE. Like dead fish soup. (The egusi soup). DO NOT EAT HERE!!! I've never reviewed a place before until I tasted this horrible food.
google avatar

Tamika J.

Yelp
Absolutely love the food the music the vibe I've been coming here since they first opened

Racquel U.

Yelp
I'm a little torn about writing this review because I really wanted to like this place and give it a 4-start. In an area saturated with Mexican and Asian establishments, it's something different. Hear me out! Not that I don't like my carne asada fries and salt and pepper chicken wings. I like variety and was excited to see variety in the neighborhood. So, It comes with a bit of heavy heart to say this place was just ok. First off, the owner. The mother was not very helpful when ordering. I think we caught her while she was on the phone and she was giving us the vibe that we were a bother. It was our first time, so we were trying to figure out what to eat so my husband and I was asking questions. Although she told us things were spicy, it felt like trying to pry information. I ended up just getting the Jollof Rice combo with chicken; the husband ended up getting the white rice combo with fish. Later she came back and told us that she didn't have white rice ready and it could take 20 minutes. So, we agreed on him having a Jollopf rice combo but with fish. Our dishes taste the same since the only difference is the protein. The husband's fish was fried with sauce over it, as mine too but it didn't seem friend. It's spicy but not overpowering. I think the best part of my meal was the plantains or bananas. It was just really oily. We had leftovers and took them home. We weren't impressed, and as much as I want to give the place another try. I think we will hold off for a bit. Give it a go, you might like it!

Yelp
I drove a farther distance than usual to try a new restaurant. Nigeria Breeze is in a small suite located along a busy stretch of businesses on E Plaza Blvd in National City. The parking in that plaza wasn't optimal as customers of many shops were competing for a limited number of spots. When I walked in, there were a few young men seated at a middle table, but the rest of the place was empty. African cuisine in general, let alone West African, is certainly out of my food comfort zone, but I wanted to give my taste buds an adventure. Soups, stews, and combo dishes were the main menu categories. Of the five available stews, I picked the Efo Riro which was described as made with spinach, onions, red bell pepper, and tomatoes served with a choice of meat. Beef was my selection. The dish came with a serving of fufu (dough made from fermented cassava), however I ordered a side dish of jollof rice to go with the meal. While the stew was savory, I did find that more meat was needed besides the few bone-in pieces. For a price of $20+, a sufficient amount of protein should be provided. I would also like to have seen a smaller serving of jollof rice offered as an option instead of the fufu. The aroma of the stew was interesting as there were unfamiliar scents that I detected. It likely came from the spices that had been added to the broth. I'd have to say that if I were to try this cuisine again, then it needs to be with a person who is experienced with this style of food.

Yelp
Mom and I had lunch here today and it was pretty good. We ordered the Goat pepper soup, jolof rice and plantains!! Everything was super tasty and had the perfect amount of heat! Kinda wish there was more goat meat!! Otherwise the portion sizes were great. We were pretty satiated with the meal we shared! Great first experience at a Nigerian restaurant and hope to come back again soon!!

JuJu F.

Yelp
First time trying Nigerian food and had the egusi with chicken and fufu along with their meat pie - absolutely delicious! Prices are a little high, but your belly will be full and satisfied. Would come here again to try different things!

Yelp
The best authentic Nigerian food I've tasted so far. Jollof rice is nice and smoky if you don't like smoky flavor on your rice, I would recommend the fried rice which is still flavorful with no smoky flavor. The pounded yam is nice and smooth. The restaurant is clean and the customer service is excellent.

Nubian Warrior G.

Yelp
This is the best Nigerian Restaurant in all of San Diego its clean and they have a great staff

Genevieve A.

Yelp
I really hate to leave such a bad review. But for health and safety purposes, this is really important so I ordered through Postmates the Ugusti stew, which shows nowhere that on their menu does it involves fish. It gives the option of fish, but not created with fish. I ordered the beef on top, and I noticed that there was a weird fish taste thankfully , as my friend who is allergic to fish did not eat it first as I found, two pieces of fish in it. I really hope that this was a one time thing. But for safety PUT IN ON YOUR MENU IF ITS MADE WITH IT

Chinny E.

Yelp
went there for my birthday party and it was a blast. the food and the people was great. will definitely be coming back !!!

Yelp
the food was absolutely delicious, i got chicken with my egusi stew. probably some of the best chicken i've ever had. it may be a little spicy for some but it was perfect for my palate! the lady that took my order was on the phone taking a personal call so it was a bit awkward. not a great ambiance to eat inside but the food was well worth it! will be returning.

Yelp
I made the right decision coming here! Must try - Jollof rice with Chicken I will be coming back to try the soup! They have beers/white claw and soda, nice place to come, relax listen to Afro beats & enjoy your meal! (Family friendly)

Yelp
Amazing experience. This family run restaurant is a must visit. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the food is incredible. I will be back to try more
