70 New Restaurants and Bars That Have Opened in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"I tried a West African restaurant highlighting Nigerian cuisine where owner Maria Onisemo and her mother cook dishes such as jollof rice, fried yams with spicy sauce, savory stews like egusi and stewed okra, and soups ranging from goat meat to spicy fish soup—bringing Nigerian home-cooked flavors to a storefront." - Candice Woo

Nigeria Breeze Restaurant Bringing West African Food to National City | Eater San Diego

"I'm looking forward to Nigeria Breeze, which is aiming to open by the end of the month in National City and hopes to widen the spotlight on West African cuisine. It will be owner Maria Onisemo’s first establishment in the United States, though her family has operated restaurants in Nigeria; she and her mother — who will serve as the head chef — moved from running a private catering business to sharing their regional family recipes. The menu is anchored by jollof rice (a tomato-based rice dish paired with chicken and plantains) and includes efo riro, a spinach-and-pepper stew; egusi soup, thickened with ground melon seeds and served with starchy pounded yam or fufu; and asara, a savory yam porridge. The operation will occupy a 1,788-square-foot space in the South Bay, plans to be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., hopes to offer beer and wine in the future, and envisions eventually franchising into malls and hotels to help bring Nigerian food more into the mainstream." - Candice Woo

First time trying this place and Nigerian food and I loved the experience. Authentic Nigerian dishes and the service was really great. During our stay we noticed a lot of clients coming in to purchase to go. I strongly recommend. My son even used his hands to try the fufu. The portions are very big, enough to share and actually spicy but not too spicy.

I had an incredible experience at this Nigerian restaurant! The food was not only flavorful and authentic, but the quantity was so satisfying — you definitely get your money’s worth. The quality of every dish truly stood out, from the seasoning to the texture. Whether you’re craving jollof rice, egusi soup, or peppered meat, everything was cooked to perfection. I dined in and also ordered takeout, and I was impressed both times. The packaging for the takeout was top-notch — secure, neat, and still hot when I got home. The service was just as amazing — warm, professional, and attentive from start to finish. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a true taste of Nigeria with excellent value and top-tier service. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Huge shoutout to the owner Maria for the amazing hospitality and food! We came in right before a rush, everyone came in and ready to devour the delicious food! Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in SoCal!!! We literally couldn’t decide which of the dishes we liked more! This is a must try!

I got the egusi soup w beef, fufu and a beef patty. The fufu was my favorite of the dish. It was my first time having Nigerian fufu. The egusi has flavor but not much soup which was a big disappointment esp for the price. The beef in my opinion was over cooked but still good. I’ll most likely do chicken next time because I’ll certainly be get it again. The beef patty huge the dough was thick again my favorite part 🤤 definitely needs a little more moisture inside of it kinda dry but overall in my opinion legit place

I visited this restaurant with my wife and our 1-year-old while in town, hoping for a great experience. Unfortunately, from the moment we arrived, the service left much to be desired. My wife noticed a rude stare from the host (a dark-skinned lady with braces), but I encouraged her to overlook it, assuming it might have been a misunderstanding. During our meal, our child, as toddlers do, made a bit of a mess—some rice and crumbs of meat pie fell on the floor. Instead of handling the situation professionally, the host came over and rudely said, “I’m going to bring a broom for you to clean this mess.” At first, I thought she was joking, but it became clear she was serious. Before leaving, my wife and I made an effort to clean the table, as we would anywhere, but we didn’t pick up the crumbs from the floor—something that is standard for restaurant staff to handle. As we were leaving, I thanked the host, but she ignored me. My wife then apologized for the mess, and the host responded in a hostile manner, saying, “This is not nice at all.” Beyond the poor service, the food itself was disappointing. The efo riro tasted spoiled, and the pricing was too high given the experience. I always aim to support Nigerian businesses, and this review is not meant to defame but to encourage better customer service and professionalism. A welcoming attitude goes a long way in making customers feel valued, and unfortunately, we left with a bad taste—both literally and figuratively. We won’t be returning.

It was my first time eating Nigerian foods. I enjoyed it very much! 5 of us shared some suggested dishes. They were very kind and helpful with suggestions. The spinach stew with fufu was my favorite! I'd come back!

The food is super authentic Nigerian and very delicious. We went with a friend from Nigeria and we all loved the food. The stews are hearty and very tasty. The jollof rice has a little kick to it and the chicken has great flavor. We'll be coming back again next time we are in San Diego!
